Review: 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad
Posted by CapnRex101,Classic Space includes numerous iconic sets, perhaps too many for LEGO to revisit all those deserving of attention separately. 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad thus takes inspiration from various memorable sets, representing each in microscale.
The execution of these models looks great, although astronauts to operate them are equally important. Two tiny astronauts are thus provided, using parts from the Spacebaby released last year! This set will be available with LEGO.com purchases of over $200 or €200, launching on Friday.
Summary
40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad, 325 pieces.
40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad is a wonderful reimagining of Classic Space
- Brilliant selection of models
- Good balance of old and new
- Adorable astronaut microfigures
- Fun interaction between figures and vehicles
- Stickers instead of printed parts
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
Microfigures
The aforementioned astronauts are certainly a highlight of this little set, re-using the combined head, helmet and air tank component designed for the Spacebaby. However, these feature the classic smiling face, rather than the cute expression from the Spacebaby, which works better in this situation, in my opinion.
In addition, I appreciate that two colours are provided, each decorated with the Classic Space emblem to match their bigger minifigure equivalents. Of course, introducing the blue and white versions will create demand for more microfigure astronauts, so I hope there will be chances for similar figures wearing red, yellow and black suits, or any other colours, in the near future!
The Completed Model
Four models comprise this gift-with-purchase, inspired by different Classic Space sets. I think this small spacecraft takes influence from various sources because it does not match any one vehicle produced between 1978 and 1987, instead combining features from many. 6803 Space Patrol was a major influence, but the engines and thrusters underneath are modern additions.
Unfortunately, the Classic Space logo on the 1x2 slope is a sticker, which is a particular shame because this could surely have been re-used. Otherwise, I think the vehicle looks splendid and its cockpit is charming, with room for an astronaut and even a tiny steering wheel! The engines look nice too, each glowing with trans-yellow pieces.
The next two models are easier to identify, based on 920 Rocket Launch Pad, which was also known as 483 Alpha-1 Rocket Base in the US. Although lacking a crater baseplate to stand on, the control centre and launchpad look fantastic together, capturing the essential features of their counterparts from the late 1970s.
For example, the yellow square around the base of the rocket and the light bluish grey braces on the tower are borrowed directly from 920 Rocket Launch Pad. Even the trans-red and trans-green lights on top come from the older model. The network of pipes surrounding the launchpad is new, however, while the rocket mixes features from two Classic Space sets.
The control centre has been modernised in the same way. The trans-yellow windows and roof closely resemble the building produced in 1978, while the dish and antenna on top are familiar as well. The grey legs underneath, on the other hand, replace simple blue pillars from the older model and the floor inside is also light bluish grey to match.
Jumper plates allow the astronauts to stand at the control stations and two more stickers form overhead displays. These match the style of computer screens in Classic Space sets perfectly, so the use of stickers is again disappointing. One more sticker is placed on the edge of the roof and this is another new addition.
Unlike the back and sides of the original control centre, which were basically featureless, the detailing here continues on all sides. The colourful lights look excellent and I like the exposed studs introducing some texture on the roof. Moreover, the external pipes complement those on the launchpad, so the two structures definitely look as though they belong together.
The fourth and largest model takes inspiration from 6950 Mobile Rocket Transport and this is definitely my favourite. Despite its evidently modest size, measuring 11cm in length, the rover gives an impression of power, as though it could cross adverse terrain while carrying its heavy load. Additionally, I like how this vehicle shifts the balance of colours towards light bluish grey, contrasting with the above models.
In fact, the transport looks even with the rocket attached, making use of the 1x2 plate with bar attached to the rocket. The proportions of this vehicle are impressive and the distinct bands of colour look great. I think providing a single rocket, compatible with both the launchpad and this transport, was a good decision because it makes the set feel more cohesive.
The rocket platform is connected via a Technic pin, so it can be raised as though preparing to launch the spacecraft. A similar function was included on the 1982 model, although that could reach to deploy the rocket on the ground, which this articulated arm cannot. However, the new model is more detailed, including cylindrical drums towards the front of the launcher, between two black antennas taken from the original vehicle.
Similarly, the shape of the cab is clearly inspired by the classic Mobile Rocket Transport, but its shape has been altered. Nevertheless, the angled windscreen and windows providing a view of the ground in front of the rover remain intact, with room for an astronaut to stand inside. Another can turn the steering wheels along either side, again originating from the classic model.
While some features have been updated, the suspension from the original vehicle has been preserved, thankfully. The eight wheels are mounted on Technic beams in pairs, so they can move as the rover travels across uneven terrain. The rear wheels' steering has been removed though, wisely simplifying the design to focus on the suspension.
Overall
While some would certainly have favoured a minifigure-scale recreation of one Classic Space set over microscale renditions of several, I am delighted with 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad. These four models are absolutely adorable and I think the designer has found an appropriate balance between fidelity to older sets and raising the level of detail.
The astronaut microfigures are also impressive, so my only complaint with the set is the use of stickers, especially on 1x2 slopes and consoles. Of course, the purchase threshold is relatively high, although not unreasonably so for a set of this size, in my view. I hope to see more sets in this style in the future, perhaps including 6951 Robot Command Centre, which happens to contain red, yellow and black astronauts to miniaturise!
This set will be available with LEGO.com purchases of over $200 or €200, starting on the 16th of February for LEGO Insiders and for everyone from February 19th. We will update this article with any other purchase requirements when we know them.

Yes! Soon enough, I'll have an entire universe for my Spacebabys to explore! Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!
Spaceship, spaceship, spaceship!
A $200 set shouldn't have stickers GWP or not.
Nice! I've been holding off on buying 10318 Concorde. I guess I have no excuse now.
Man, if they had made this just a regular set to purchase.

It is when you have to spend that much to get it.
I'm not too interested in the set, but I need those trans yellow 1x2x2 panels for a couple of MOCs.
Very nice! The first photo could easily be of full scale original sets laid out together, so really great work at capturing the vibe with the better parts we have now.
Adorable, yes. Interesting, no. As this is Babyfigure size, I just can't accept this as an official addition to the LEGO space line and therefore it's easy to skip.
@Username28 you get the space babies, while Jessica Atreides gets the Spice baby =|

It would be if that was the only thing you got. Your $200 still gets you $200 of sets. I've been holding off on new sets for the last month because I knew this would be coming out. I'm not buying more sets, I'm buying sets at a different time. I'm not spending $200 on a GWP.
This looks fantastic - But I'll wait for when it runs a second time, (june?) like the Blacktron GWP from last year did. I already spent way too much on brick in recent months!

No, it is not. You spend $200 to get other sets. Then you get that one for free.

Me too! I've been on a bit of a spending frenzy lately with a whole load of sets I wanted. I'm not sure there are any bigger sets that I'm desperate for at the moment either, but I really want this! I've got the original 6950 sitting on one of my shelves and this little one would look soooo cool next to it...
I never knew this set even existed until now. Is this like a Europe-exclusive GWP or something?
This thing has suspension?! 60432 is sad :(
Cool!
Impressive, very nice.
Now let's see LEGO doing a smaller set from a classic theme that ISN'T a GWP, for once.

It is though. You don't spend those $200, you're not getting it without visiting an aftermarket.
Cool! Seems that my Lego Store does have Concorde on stock, so I will be able to build this over the weekend :-)
But, while I like it, I would love if they did GWPs or sets also from other space themes. We already got one Blacktron, why not also Futuron, Blacktron II, Ice planet…? Looking at recent castle releases, we got 4 themes already: Black Falcons, Lion Knights, Forestmen, and Dragon Knights. Plus the latest collectible minifigures had Basil from Fright Knights and upcoming medieval village will have one Wolfpack figure. So one could argue we got 6 castle themes/factions already.

No, this will be available worldwide. It happens from time to time that sets are not officially revealed before the review embargo date and this is one of those situations, although a low resolution image did leak a little while ago.
I like it and would like to have it...but I'm not spending $200 to get it. The spend threshold of $200 should be noted as a con. $50 less would be more palatable.

Visiting an aftermarket where you will not pay $200... So it's not worth $200.
Thanks for the review.
I do feel less hyped about this one now.
I guess the Pink Space Baby will have the cute face?
I don't know, I would prefer a small series of Space Babies in all kinds of colours with micro bases and vehicles and printed parts.
Yeah, one can dream. :-)
I never expect new/custom prints from a GWP (if they have that it’s a nice surprise but also an exception). Plus a new space baby color and 2x new space baby heads/faces are IMHO a much bigger deal than a print instead of a sticker.
As for the price threshold, I remember adding a $20 set to my purchase of The Starry Night set for a family member, in order to hit the threshold for the Blacktron Cruiser. So that GWP must have had a threshold of $200 or very close to it as well, and I don’t recall a lot of folks complaining about that (except for the stickers).
I love the Blacktron GWP but for me this new one provides more - more unique figures, multiple models that stand on their own and also work together, and an amazing parts pack if you eventually want to disassemble it. This review is the first time I’ve learned that the 6950 rover remake has the original suspension, and that’s the last straw that’s made me decide to get this.
I don't like the classic smiling face. No sparkle in their eyes. They creep me out.
Otherwise this is awesome.

Exactly where my brain went. You'd think they'd work in tandem on design and realize how their product will be reviewed if these things are released back to back!
I NEED THIS SET NOW. IT IS FANTASTIC.
The fact they picked 6950, one of my favorite CS sets, just makes it even better. If it had a remake of 6929 too it would be the best set of the year for me already.
Only thing I think they missed was not including a yellow astronaut, which would be fitting for the 6950. The usage of dark bluish gray parts on the vehicle also bothers me (never use DBG in CS stuff, never!) but the parts can easily be replaced so it is not a major problem. Can't wait to get this set!
Bummer. No Baby Kenny. I was kinda hoping he just wasn’t showing up because he was hiding behind a trans-yellow windshield.
So basically this is a playground for the Space Babies?
RE those new trans yellow pieces:
I NEED IT!
All the handwringing... stickers. Ah. GWP Ah. Mini Ah.
Ahhh. Ahh. Ah?

1000 percent agree. 6950 is my favorite Classic Space set and second favorite Space set, right behind 6954.
Oh man, I can already see LEGO updating a wide range of classic sets with minifig babies. Space babies, Castle babies, Pirate babies, City babies, Paradisa babies, Ninjago babies, Johnny Thunders babies... Muppet Babies???
And props to @CapnRex101 for listing stickers as a negative in his review. In some instances the inclusion of stickers make me not want to dish out for a set or GWP, like last year's Blacktron GWP.
Shame we couldn't have the tiny figures in the original red and white. The LEGO Movie has butchered the true history of Classic Space!!! Curse you BENNNYYYYY!
It's not like kids these days remember The LEGO Movie anyway. It was fun to hide a Benny or Wildstyle minifig around a display for the kids that noticed it, for a while, but post-pandemic, no-one notices anymore. Can't we all just move on from the fixation with Blue Spacemen?

Blue is the best spaceman color. Though I had a few classic space sets including the Cosmic Fleet Voyager, I was always partial to Lego Space: The Next Generation, and blue and yellow were effectively the defaults.
Time for me to pull the trigger on the Rivendell set.

It isn't though. The set itself isn't 200 bucks, it is merely a promotional added-value to a 200-dollar set. And anyways, you're assuming that making extra prints for a set is only worth the cost of the ink on the pieces. When the real cost is the added storage space (you need 2 boxes for storage for a printed part- 1 for the part before printing and1 for the printed part)- departments are given limited storage slots, so they can't just add endless amounts of printed parts.
@johleth said:
"A $200 set shouldn't have stickers GWP or not."
I disagree, I would much rather the designers use their allotment of new parts, or "frames," on something interesting like a new color of Classic Spaceman baby then on some one-off printed slopes.
@johleth said:
"A $200 set shouldn't have stickers GWP or not."
I think I'm coming around on this argument. In the past, I was sold on the idea that printed parts, especially for one-off, limited sets, are not cost effective and it's unreasonable for us to demand it. But come on, this is 2024 and we're being asked to spend $200. That said, I doubt they're going to learn because we're all (myself included) still going to buy it...
Anyway, set looks fantastic, and I'm sure not going to say no to white space baby. Red, Black, and Yellow next, please!

Fundamentally, I would be against that idea because I'm all about 'early classic space' (roughly the first 3 years). On the other hand I am for that because I understand that there are kids born at other time and they have a different 'favourite' theme of their youth. Besides, variety is generally (but not always) good and the other space themes had very cool models as well (it was just the suits that were so wrong!).
So, Lego, please bring other Space themes/factions as long as it is minifig scale. (key words here: minifig scale)
As for this thing 40712, I'm one of those who would have preferred minifig scale (better do 1 thing right than 4, not quite right). And to add insult to injury, the sets comes with stickers (somehow the bigger stickers of Blacktron did not bother me last year - but here they seem extremely visible). I am very happy for those who are now starting a Space Baby collection (I already collect way too many Lego stuff) and while I really, really want to like this one, it is letting me down on so many points. I will however eagerly wait for these magnificent trans yellow parts on PaB.
I might end up having it anyway as I currently need a bunch of parts - I suppose I could add a few more in there to meet the threshold - we'll see.

Muppet Babies!
Anyone who thinks this is a $200 set has been failed by their educational system.
Open up a Bricklink account and wait a week or two, and you'll see that the set will be for sale for less than $40, plus shipping. You'll be able to buy five of these with shipping included for less than $200.
How some of you think that makes this a $200 set is mind-boggling.
Yes, stickers are less than ideal, but like others, I'm thrilled that the designers used their parts budget to give us new space baby pieces rather than new Classic Space logo prints.
This is an incredible set, and I have been putting off several big purchases and I will place them all this Friday (February 16th) to get multiple copies of this set.
Oh hey, that's a pretty cool set...

...neeeeeever mind.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on now. If anyone is dead set on complaining up a storm about how this GWP costs $200, then I have a perfect solution for them. Send _me_ the $200 worth of sets they ordered to qualify for this, and then they will be right.
@Joefish:
I still put Benny holding a long pole to give Emmett a boost so he can work on one of my 5G towers with his jackhammer. More people comment on the 5G towers, but some people still notice. The trick is, I go into it with the mindset that something I put on the layout doesn’t have to appeal to everyone who stops by, but that everyone who stops by needs to be able to find at least one thing that they can appreciate. I landed on this philosophy one year the Christmas display we do for Detroit Symphony Orchestra. During the intermission, there was a young woman, around high school/college age, who was just looking over the layout with a kind of blank look on her face, until her eyes landed on a TARDIS that another member had slipped into the display (this was about a year before the Ideas set came out). When she saw that, her face lit up, and she started freaking out about it. If that one item had not been on the layout, she probably wouldn’t have found a single thing that excited her.
One more thing ...
I went to Atlanta Brick Con this weekend, and Dana Knudson (@ troublesbricking on Instagram) had a display of Space Baby versions of all the Classic Space sets, and it was glorious!
Again, I'm thrilled that Lego took the same idea and ran with it.
Lego has released some exceptional GWPs in recent years. If this one doesn't appeal to you, just wait until later in the year and you'll probably find at least one or two that hit you in the sweet spot.

Its not a £200 set, its a GWP when buying a £200+ set
Given that my last GWP was abruptly canceled, I don't think I'm going to gamble $200 on this.
Frankly I'm fed up with this GWP nonsense altogether. I can justify a few hundred dollars each year but this is getting wildly out of hand.
Just sell the darn thing directly to insiders, is that too much to ask for?

I was hoping this would be available from the 15th because my birthday is the 16th and I was going to treat myself to the Lion Knight’s Castle. Oh well, gives me something to look forward to next week!

No you don't.
You have to pay the RRP on lego.com, whereas you get massive discounts when buying elsewhere.
Let's say you buy a 200 Euro set directly from LEGO. You then get this GWP.
Now you buy that same 200 Euro set from Amazon with the usual discount, say 30% (which nowadays is more or less the minimum discount, with up to 40 or 50% being quite common too, depending on the set and time of year).
So you save at least 60 Euro buying from Amazon, but have to buy the GWP from ebay or Bricklink.
Going by past experience, similar GWPs cost around 30 to 40 Euro, depending on the seller.
In any case that way the GWP costs you 20 to 30 Euro less than the supposedly "free" one directly from LEGO.
I would definitely choose the latter option, but now that I know about stickers I am not sure if I'll even bother. Stickers ruin the entire usability of the CS parts for me, since there are none, other than the baby-figs.
Love it but stickers are a bummer and there could’ve been three or four baby figs but I’ll be buying something partly to get this
When this one first became known, I was already planning my purchases for it.
After reading the review, not so much anymore.

Do you know what sets have these kind of discounts? I rarely see sets go for more than 25% off.
Don't think I've ever been so equally excited and disappointed by a set... looks fantastic but again it's a GWP...
Is there any idea of the end date? I was hoping to get this with Medieval Town Square on 1st March…

This is something that has been covered before but there is basically no discounts on sets in Canada. Some retailers like Toys Rus (which still exists in Canada), Joubec and others even often sell above the suggested retail LEGO prices.
Amazon - which I refuse to buy from anyway - sometimes offert 10% on sets that are not popular. But mostly sell them at suggested retail prices.
So, great for you to be able to pick up sets at 30% off, but everything you write does not apply for most NA costumers. For us, the LEGO store remains the best option.
Thus, when I spend $200 to get other sets, I will get this one for free.

No. The set you're buying to get the GWP is $200. This set is FREE!"
Again, it isn't.
Depending on the discount you get on that 200 Dollar set elsewhere, you pay roughly between 60 and 80 Dollars for this GWP when buying the 200 Dollar set directly from LEGO.
Do the math, it's quite simple.
Yes, the GWP isn't 200 Dollars, but still very expensive.

Do you know what sets have these kind of discounts? I rarely see sets go for more than 25% off. "
Every LEGO set I bought from Amazon, Alternate, Proshop, Media Markt, Saturn, Alza, Steinehelden, or even JB Spielwaren and Smyths over the last couple of years had discounts of at least 25%. Most were between 35% and 45%, with some as high as 65%.
@AustinPowers. For the fun of it, 75337 is 180$ Canadian at LEGO. But it’s $200 Canadian at Toys Rus. 75369 is 20$ at LEGO, 25$ at TR. 21333 is 500$ at LEGO, 550$ at TR. And on and on. Most of the time the difference is just a few bucks, but it’s there nonetheless.
So LEGO IS our best option…

You have my sympathies then.
I just looked at two recent sets that might interest me.
21345 is 49.99 Euro at Alternate currently, as discount of 38% on a very new set.
Or the Star Wars UCS Venator 75367 for 539 Euro. Just 17% on that one, but that's still 110 Euro discount versus lego.com. More than enough to buy two to three of this GWP certainly.
And 75337 currently is 94.16 Euro including shipping from Alza, as discount of 33%. Just for the fun of it.
It looks great but the timing sucks at least for people intending to buy 10332
@AustinPowers 25-33% is possible more is rare and you have a big chance their stock is emptied.
Usually there is limited stock or its the clearance discount what means you risk missing a set.

And just for completion, 75369 currently available for 10.99 Euro from Alternate including shipping. A saving of 31%. Just saying.
@eiffel006 : why are there so little discounts in Canada? I often read from Brickset users in the US that they got sets on clearance for up to 80% off. That's the type of discount even I have hardly ever seen over here.
Seems there is very little competition in Canada when it comes to LEGO sets.
Over here there are several factors. For a start we have lots of large online retailers keen on shifting stock. And since LEGO isn't as popular as it used to be, people expect sizeable discounts to begin with.
Plus with all the alternatives now available at far better value for money, LEGO sets have a harder time selling too.
Just as food for thought, I recently bought an Orient Express set from Mould King. RRP is 190 Euro, but I got it at Amazon for 150.
It included 3,900 pieces, 2 large motors, lighting, a steam generator, a rechargeable battery box, a remote, a huge circle of track (36 pieces at a far wider radius than the standard LEGO one). The quality of the parts (GoBricks) is on par with LEGO, the colour consistency and print quality is better than LEGO. And compared to the LEGO Orient Express the final result is more realistic and much more impressive size-wise.
If you saw both sets next to one another in a store and were told the LEGO version was twice the price, why would you buy the latter as a rationally thinking customer? And no, it is not a stolen MOC, in case you were wondering.
Sigh, GWP... Guess I 'll have to order for 200€ again and send everything back except the GWP.

25 February or until stocks run out. As you currently can’t pre-order Medieval Town Square in the UK, it doesn’t look like you’ll get this promotional set with it.
It’s possible that Medieval Town’s Square status will change and you will be able to pre-order it, but whether there will be any of this Classic Space set left by then is anyone’s guess.
483 and 6803 were some of my first ever Lego sets WAAAAY back in the day. I have a MIGHTY NEED for this! Thankfully, I've held off on buying any expensive sets, so I've got a few options to hit that $200 threshold...and might even do it twice because I love this GWP so much!
Wish this was an actual theme with mini space figs and series of sets. It could be an affordable way to bridge the past with the present. Instead we get a limited GWP release and a high barrier price point. Locally hardly anything is in stock to actually make it worth it.

I can NOT believe this set costs $2,000.... and has stickers!!
As previously noted, I'm geek-freaked over the moon about this set. If it had a yellow or red baby, I'd start losing organs.
It's probably time to leverage some real estate. Does Lego do living wills? Does anyone know a good divorce attorney?
Wow, this is definitely something I need to get. I was holding off on buying the Ghost for May the 4th, now I have to decide if I buy it or something else. Kinda gambling on whether or not the May the 4th GWP will be worthwhile.
Sadly, in my region ordering from LEGO takes too long, if I'm buying 200$ worth of LEGO I'd want it sooner rather than later, plus no deals from LEGO so it would be startlingly little LEGO for the cost. I would really love to have this though despite the stickers all over the place. Sigh....
I was illusionated about the set
But after seeing some reviews I have confronted thoughts
We can get easily a 20% of discount in medium/big LEGO sets in Amazon and in some retail shops
That means that you have to renounce to at least 40€ to get this GWP
And I don't see that this tiny scale set worth 40€

For what it’s worth, many of us outside the UK or EU don’t see any discounts on LEGO exclusives. It’s GWP, 2x, or nothing. Regular sets? It depends, but most get to 20% Off at least once, not counting the flagship City sets which for whatever reason seem to recently hold at RRP.

Just sell the darn thing directly to insiders, is that too much to ask for?"
These sets are meant to drive sales of the existing portfolio, not extend the current portfolio. GWP is a brilliant sales technique, as you can see from many salivating in this thread.
Same goes for Insider sets requiring points redemption. I had forgotten about my grey castle code but was luckily just reminded by someone here and quickly fished it out for addition to my BLDP order. It and Brickhead Stitch just arrived. :o)
This is really well done! Although it's unfortunate we don't get a minifig scale version of this.
Space fans will also miss all the old wheels/tyres which were very unique! The wheels used here are okay I guess.

I have thought the same thing and calculated actual value.
GWP set is $30 and you get 5% insider points .
Which is almost equal to $40 cash value.
So it is your preference. I want to save money on sets or I want to get a limited brick set and points instead of actual cash.
So for me, it depends on how much i like the promo set.
This might be the first time I'm actually tempted to buy some stuff (Concorde?) from Lego directly just to get this set...so it seems to do exactly what Lego intended.
I just love everything they did here. Well, except obviously for the stickers, especially that slope piece should have been a print. At least the colors seem to match pretty well, so they are actually capable of that. But other than that, pretty much perfect. It's just kinda annoying these GWPs tend to be among the best sets Lego currently makes....
Oh my gosh this is perfect! I was looking for an excuse to buy the new space sets, and this is perfect!

Might be the same display, or might be that multiple people had the same idea, but a member of my LUG sent me pics of a whole display done with the original Baby Benny (which that was the only option) at Brickworld Chicago last June.
@AustinPowers:
If I walk into Meijer, Target, or Walmart, they almost always charge MSRP on everything (or within a few pennies, in the latter case). Costco sells sets on the cheap, but only a few select SKUs. Amazon may discount...but then you're giving money to the guy who prompted a petition asking the US government to ban him from coming back from orbit.
80% off is almost unheard of, depending on where in the US you live. A particular chain may do it, and they may be regional. Or, many stores eventually push stuff into deep discount if it significantly outstays its welcome, but you really have zero control over which sets reach this point.
Now, last year, Walmarts nationwide seem to have marked the 2023 SWAC down to anywhere from $10-15, by early November, but you really can't count on something that huge happening at all, much less on any specific set that you're hoping to buy.

I’m a bit torn on this space babies set. When I saw the picture on my phone, I got excited thinking we were getting another CS redo. I was disappointed to read on but also quite impressed with the breadth and execution of the set.
My wish lists are overflowing at the moment. Of course I’m also a little frustrated with LEGO that they wouldn’t throw in the Valentines beardog with my BLDP orders. I didn’t even like the beardog, lol.
As an owner of 6950, this is perfection! Classic Space is back!
And if they could incorporate the suspension on this model, then they could have also done so on 60432 (reviewed a few days ago)
I desperately want this set, but won't be buying enough Lego to get the GWP so will be trawling eBay and Bricklink.
I really like the look of this set, but I'd like it more if it was either a proper homage to early Classic Space or a proper homage to multiple Classic Space eras (maybe have the rover be gray and trans-green), instead of a homage to Benny.
In any case, people who refer to it as a $200 set are welcome to present a serious argument that 10497 constitutes LEGO trying to charge $100 for a single blue 2x8 plate.

LEGO doesn't really do any favors with the timing of GWP and other promotional announcements. It's two days before and they don't have any official announcement of their own, whereas all the different fan sites have articles already out. You're basically forced to subscribe to a site (not that they're a bad thing) or visit LEGO every other day to make sure you don't miss something. Missing the days of the monthly calendars.

But they did present Benny with the old blue/light-grey/trans-yellow Classic Space color scheme, even though no blue Spaceman ever appeared in a set with that color scheme prior to 70816. In doing so, it also reinforced the belief that this was the _only_ Classic Space color scheme, when in fact it wasn't even the most common one.
Kind of embarrassing that the Galaxy Explorer and Lion Knight Castle are still the only non-GWP Classic Lego -theme releases as of this moment. It's not JUST adults buying these throwback sets, these are extremely marketable

Was interested, even at a 200 USD threshold, but not anymore seeing that all the graphics are stickers...
For some reason I find the classic heads on the space babies disturbing. I must have gotten too used to the standard baby face from that CMF. That being said this seems like a cool set! The threshold is higher than I would ever reach though, and I am slowing down my already slow and small purchases.
An excellent set, even though Classic Space was well after my 1st Lego age, so holds no nostalgia for me. But I'll take it as a throwback to a throwback of 358-1!
Exactly the sort of GWP I really appreciate as I slowly work my way through my £4334.85 Lego Exclusives part of my wishlish!
Also just noticed the Duplo My First Duck GWP has just appeared, but I'm devastated that it's only with Duplo purchases!

I would also like to point out that, for $200, you can just about purchase both the original Alpha-1 Rocket Base, Mobile Rocket Transport AND Space Patrol sets in reasonable condition.
Yes I get that this set isn't actually $200 but I suspect the aftermarket price is likely going to be $30-40 and unless you're already planning on spending $200 on stuff, the alternatives are pretty reasonable. Don't buy in just out of FOMO!
It's nice but pointless.
Space babies and a different print for the blue one's head... I don't want a space baby collection (and even less interested with these 2 requiring me to spend over 200€); I wish they would instead release the LBG helmet and airtanks and rerelease the black, blue and green figs and.. maybe release a teal classic space minifig.

For the 2,000th time! GWPs are Lego's way of having a 'sale' without resulting in the wholesale destruction of its wholesale business.
We all want cool, big sets. So, Lego increases the threshold for GWPs and adds a bunch of parts to make them more interesting. Big sets cause big prices which lead to big GWPs with big thresholds.
I understand not everyone can accept this or afford it. I also understand that Lego could certainly give us more for our money (more figs, less stickers).

1) Yes, we all want cool, big sets. However, the cool, big sets are now stuffed with hundreds or thousands of very small and less useful parts - not actual "bricks".
2) I have purchased my share of large sets whether I could afford them or not.
3) LEGO is doing everything they can to give us less for our money under the cover of "cost increases" and quietly enacting price controls. However, if you look closely they have done a lot to mitigate/manage those cost increases while also often losing quality control. This started well before any economic headwinds.

I heartily agree with everything you said. However, if I'm going to continue buying Lego (and, I am), then I want sales or GWPs (the bigger and cooler, the better) to take the sting out of it.

"The LEGO Movie has butchered the true history of Classic Space!!! Curse you BENNNYYYYY!"
How?
Benny is introduced as "1980's something space guy" not "original classic space guy" or "1970's something space guy""
But they did present Benny with the old blue/light-grey/trans-yellow Classic Space color scheme, even though no blue Spaceman ever appeared in a set with that color scheme prior to 70816 . In doing so, it also reinforced the belief that this was the _only_ Classic Space color scheme, when in fact it wasn't even the most common one."
First of all, this is literally untrue because of 6971 . Second of all, it doesn't matter. While blue astronauts were generally included in the grey land vehicles instead of the space ships, they were released concurrently. Most children were not prohibiting blue spacemen from boarding the other Lego space sets.* As a specific example, one was a valued crew member of my Cosmic Fleet Voyager, even though he didn't come in the box. The color scheme complaint is also a really weird one to make in response to this collection, which includes a nearly all-grey land craft and nearly all-white rocket to properly homage the other color schemes.
On the one hand, I genuinely admire your pedantic commitment to Lego honoring its history. On the other, I think there's far more to love about Benny and 1980s something space guy than lament.
*When I collected Futuron in late elementary school, I did give different colored astronauts different functional roles. I think this was inspired by Star Trek: TNG, though I always thought I didn't watch it until much later. If memory serves, red was command, blue was piloting, yellow was maintenance, black was weaponry. Personally, I think it's time for Benny to upgrade his space suit. Where's my modern update to the monorail, Lego?!

"It's nice but pointless."
Man, that sentence nicely sums up LEGO and most other hobbies in four words.
I don't think people are thinking straight. Clearly this set is $200 and whatever else you buy to get up to that threshold is free. Duh :P

I’ll accept that answer.
I know the review said the ship seems more inspired by 6803 but it does look a bit like a Galaxy Explorer microfighter. Maybe that’s something Lego could expand into; doing microfighter versions of their own classic ships as well as the Star Wars ones

Count me in for a micro town plan.
A lightly modified 75033 Imperial Star Destroyer Microfighter from 2014 works great as a Galaxy Explorer Microfighter or as an updated 885 Space Scooter from 1979.
6950 Mobile Rocket Transport is one of my favorite classic space sets, and 483 Alpha 1 Rocket Base is up there too, so this is definitely a must have for me. Can't justify spending $200 on Legos at the moment though, so will be looking to pick this one up on the aftermarket.
The original 6950 was my favorite space set when I was about 7 years old. Great playability with setting up the rocket, driving the suspended wheels over crater plates etc.
This might be my favorite GWP of all time. Had to get it. And I will of course rebuild the original as well.
Awesome and cute GWP!
Pity every decent large set is out of stock here in Australia! Was hoping for the Concorde, finally!
And all the other sizable sets I might consider buying from LEGO.com are available much cheaper elsewhere!

Technically, it sums up life itself.
Woohoo, just gotten delivery of this set!

Also, people. The nice ones, at least."
Ahhhhh--HA! Now, the mask drops. Now, we see your game!
@Ridgeheart is the new AI overlord! The dates line up. It all makes sense.
I have to admit, our new AI overlord is much more charming and funny than I expected. I guess that's how it will work. Maybe extinction isn't so bad, afterall?
I could be wrong, but I've just checked the UK site and, as of the 19th Feb, this now appears to be sold out....
lemish34: "And all the other sizable sets I might consider buying from LEGO.com are available much cheaper elsewhere!"
Yes. It seems to me that with most 'gifts with purchase' buying the sets to get you over the threshold for the gift from somewhere such as Amazon will be significantly cheaper than buying from Lego. You could then buy the gift set from an ebay seller. It would probably cost the same as buying the sets (and receiving the gift set) from Lego, and might even be cheaper.
I would have liked this set, but I've only just learned about it, and it's already out of stock. So, I'll have to resort to ebay or Bricklink.
hmm no sign of this on the danish lego website...
Lego site had this with 2 different promo periods, the Insiders one ended on 18 Feb and should immediately followed by the same promo but for everyone from 19 Feb to 25 Feb. Maybe there is a site related technical issue causing he promo to disappear?.

The issue is that it's sold out.
My nearby physical Lego store was also out of them yesterday, and they usually have popular GWPs for a while after they're sold out online.
It's been more than a week since the promo started in my country by Lego website, as of now the promo is still available. Likewise our local LCS stores also have this promo for a week now and still available. Since US is OOS, I wonder which other countires still have stock for the promo.
Beautiful set but why babies as figs? It seems very comical, frivolous and a bit strange. I mean, it simply reduces the impression of the classic old space set due to the new baby figs, looking from my point of view. I would like to see traditional classic space figures with air tanks and headgear helmets instead of new ones.

"I already spent way too much on brick in recent months!"
Me too! I've been on a bit of a spending frenzy lately with a whole load of sets I wanted. I'm not sure there are any bigger sets that I'm desperate for at the moment either, but I really want this! I've got the original 6950 sitting on one of my shelves and this little one would look soooo cool next to it..."
I popped into our local Lego store this week and stared longingly at these on display. Then my little girl took a fancy to the Gabby's Dollhouse set. I'd gone in to get the 3-in-1 astronaut set and was planning to get the Kingfisher set for my mum for Mother's Day next month (she's 85 and just discovered that she likes making Lego models!), so I realised the three together took me within £20 of the threshold. You can easily spend that in a Lego shop without trying!
So I got it. It's really cool and it does indeed look superb sitting next to its big brother!
