Review: 75375 Millennium Falcon

Posted by ,

7778 Midi-scale Millennium Falcon was released in 2009 and instituted the short-lived midi-scale series. Fifteen years later, the impressive 75375 Millennium Falcon returns to the iconic YT-1300 freighter at this scale, albeit consisting of nearly three times the pieces of its predecessor!

The designer has definitely put those additional pieces to good use, as the model appears stunningly detailed and accurate to the onscreen vehicle. The texture across the fuselage looks great and the proportions seem excellent too, which is a feature past versions of the Millennium Falcon have often struggled with.

Summary

75375 Millennium Falcon, 921 pieces.
£74.99 / $84.99 / €84.99 | 8.1p/9.2c/9.2c per piece.

75375 Millennium Falcon looks magnificent on display, but feels quite expensive

  • Accurate shape
  • Stunning detail
  • Ideal display model
  • Solid construction for play
  • Gaps around cockpit
  • Small for the price

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

The Completed Model

I would consider the Millennium Falcon among the most famous vehicles in film history and its asymmetrical silhouette is instantly recognisable. Recreating the shape accurately is therefore essential and this model definitely succeeds, on the whole. Additionally, the bodywork is highly detailed, without becoming fragile, as the 24cm-long vessel feels sturdy to handle for play.

Whereas other vehicles in the Starship Collection are capital ships, frigates and corvettes, the Millennium Falcon is smaller and more mobile. With that in mind, I like how its display stand is constructed to show the freighter at an angle, while maintaining the style of the stands in other sets. The printed plaque and anniversary brick look lovely too, although the angled pillar does occupy a significant number of pieces.

The view from above is the Millennium Falcon's most iconic angle, but the side profile is also important and this model looks fantastic from either side. I think the proportions are attractive and the gaps between panels are minimal. Admittedly, the 2x4 slope representing the forward landing gear housing seems a little too steep, but I am glad that detail is included at all.

Similarly, the transition between the rounded fuselage and the mandibles could be smoother. The mix of colours on the surface disguises the transition to some extent though, including a couple of dark red highlights alongside the shades of grey. The printed maintenance pits look good and these decorated tiles are new, while the 2x4 slope with cutout located between the mandibles also makes its debut here.

Two more printed elements are used for the cockpit. I am pleased these pieces are printed, of course, but I wonder why 75376 Tantive IV and 75377 Invisible Hand did not receive the same treatment. Regardless, the window design looks excellent and the shape of the access corridor is superb too, other than the unsightly gaps visible immediately behind the cockpit.

The decorated 2x2 tile from the front of the cockpit is repeated beneath the dorsal quad laser cannon. Four of the window sections are filled, which is not ideal, but they are mostly covered by the laser cannons. These weapons can swing up and down, while the rectenna rotates on a turntable, although only a short distance between studs serving as stoppers.

75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer contains six tiny figures, formed by stacked 1x1 round plates. This is evidently becoming a trend for the Starship Collection, as several more figures are found inside the Millennium Falcon. This pair depicts Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi, although their muted colours are not as recognisable as the bounty hunters hidden in the Executor.

Luke and Obi-Wan are placed inside the port docking tube, while the starboard tube contains Chewbacca and R2-D2 playing dejarik, beside Han, Leia and C-3PO from The Empire Strikes Back. These figures are a fun addition and I love the printed 1x1 round tile for the dejarik board, designed for 42158 NASA Mars Rover Perseverance, but I wish the characters were easier to access.

Mechanical detail across the surface of the Millennium Falcon is essential to its appearance, even at a relatively small scale. The combination of tiles, plates and other tiny pieces on this model is effective, including six printed 2x2 round tiles for the vents. Furthermore, the angled panels fit neatly together, avoiding significant gaps.

These panels are mirrored on the underside, with a trans-light blue flexible tube sandwiched between them. I like this tube forming the engine, partly because exactly the same technique was used on the outstanding 4504 Millennium Falcon from 2004. The resulting curvature looks nice and the blue colour of the flexible tube contrasts strongly with the grey bodywork.

While the ventral laser cannon is absent to accommodate the display stand, the underside is otherwise nearly as detailed as the top. The continued blend of dark bluish grey and dark red accents is appealing and most panels are secure, attached to those on top with clips. Only the section under the cockpit can sometimes move out of place because it relies partly on friction between a bracket and a Technic ball joint, rather than a firm connection.

Overall

I was not particularly excited by the prospect of 75375 Millennium Falcon, as I find completely new vehicles or those otherwise limited to bigger sets most suitable for the Starship Collection. However, the sheer quality of this model has won me over! The level of detail is brilliant and the general shape of the freighter only falls short of Ultimate Collector Series designs.

The vessel is comparatively small though; perhaps too small for the price of £74.99, $84.99 or €84.99. The model is densely packed with parts, but I could understand someone feeling short-changed based on the size of the Millennium Falcon alone. Even so, I think the famous freighter looks fantastic on display and its compact size is beneficial in some ways, given its practicality.

If they made a Ebon Hawk like this, it would be an instant buy for me.

No gonna lie, I had to google. Apparently there is at least one MOC done on it?

I built it this week. I also have the previous midi scale version 7778. The new one looks 100% times better than the old one. It’s actually interesting to see how building techniques have evolved over time.
The gaps around the cockpit of the new one are not great, however.

Thanks for the review.

This one was in a promotional image not so long ago. First time I'd seen it and I felt very compelled to look for it. Find out more about it.

I do wish it was more in the nice to gift to your friends without them feeling guilty price range. Maybe if it had less interior detail?

By in Germany,

It's a good design but that the price is so close to that of the TROS and TFA minifigscale sets that the entire Midi scale concept seems rather faulty. The Bandai Model kits of these ships are also Midi scale and only half price let alone a higher detail level. Lego really loses its appeal once it grows too small for minifigures and only regains it once models are small enough that the tiny number of parts makes for compelling mini models. These I mostly see in advent calendars, not the actual mini model polybags of recent decades.

By in United States,

I missed the earlier midi version and regretted it. I shall be getting my mitts on this version. The only question is now or waiting for a May 4th project. Lessons were learned last year with trying to buy BD-1 last year for such and all the copies disappearing from my local Target in less than a day! I ultimately ordered it that same day (and have still yet to build it). But, I digress... I like the look of this and I want it, price be damned!

Me too. At first, when I saw what it was, I thought it was the kid shuttle (Crimson Firehawk flying backward) but then I saw that this belongs to the Starfield videogame (Edit: not true, i've been corrected. It is Star Wars). I saw at least 6 MOCs some are extremely close to the source material (see BrickBoyz Custom Design on Bricklink to me, that is as UCS as you gonna get).

It's not Starfield, the Ebon Hawk is the ship you fly/live on in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 video games.

There's some great MOCs for the Ebon Hawk, but I'm too lazy to do it. Just make it happen, Lego!

It's a great set, but at this price Han Solo and Chewbacca have to be included.

Thank you Lego... A March release less appealing than the yearly Council Tax bill that just dropped through my letterbox. WSCC are in luck!

Thanks for pointing it out. I edited my post. I realized that what I saw was a guy who built an 'Ebon Hawk' to play it in the Starfield universe. The Brick Boyz Custom Design model is still very neat (not quite sure if all the parts are available in the required colours).

Edit: apparently the parts are available. You can get it for ONLY $2556 from Buildamoc.

By in United States,

I think they did a great job with this design. Looks spot on. And the scale is fun for display purposes compared to UCS.

But yeah, that price is going to put it in the no column for me. Too many other financial responsibilities and other sets ahead in line. Maybe on a really good sale...

Ha ha! No way. The cost far outweighs my laziness. I guess I'll just have to dream, then.

By in United Kingdom,

I wasn’t too interested in any of the March 25th anniversary Star Wars sets but having seen them in person I have changed my mind. The R2D2 75379 is deceptively dinky, the starships including this MF are swooshable and incredibly detailed, and the Tantive IV boarding scene looks excellent in person. I want to buy all but know they’ll be on discount fairly soon so happy to wait

The problem is the stands take up more pieces than people think, so I think that's where the extra $5-$10 goes.

You'd be surprised by what working two days a week will do to your lego budget. It's also really satisfying when you want a bigger set ($200+) and it takes a while to save up. I worked a fall at an orchard and my reward to my self was the Creator Expert Ford Mustang, which is my 2nd favorite set EVER. It's a much sweeter feeling to have a goal and accomplish it.

Lay off him, and put down your boomer-like attitude. Some jobs don't pay much, and most starter jobs are crap. Long hours, little pay, no benefits.

Try a week of working a fast food place, and you'll question your sanity in no time flat.

Wish they gave some extra parts to attach landing gear underneath.
Easy enough to see the spots to put them and mod from your parts collection, but would've helped to have the parts handy in the kit.

By in United States,

I have 7778 and love it. This new model is more detailed and looks fantastic, but at more than twice the price and it’s only 1cm longer. I thought by the piece count and price this would be larger for sure. All that interior micro scale detail is just fodder.

I really want to get this set but unless I find it on a good clearance or sale, it doesn’t look like it’s in the Sabbac cards for me.

Nice. McDonald's has better pay and conditions than most entry level jobs. Keep at it. Get educated, and you'll make it.

I hope you and he-whom-shall-not-be-named understand that nearly all of my comments are instigative and humorous. It's not to be taken literally.

You can't complain multiple times about youthful poverty on a fansite for high-end toys without being teased. Especially, when you comment on every thread. C'mon!!

This is exactly my issue with this model: £75 would get me a small Millennium Falcon with no minifigures. I'm not a minifigure collector, so no problem (but I still have HUNDREDS of them; do they multiply when we're not looking...??)

...but, in 2016 I paid £63 for a copy of 75105, new without minifigs (which is how I usually buy Star Wars sets). Taking account of inflation, that's more than £75 in today's money, but even if we used the same method today, and even if it cost us, say, £90 to buy a minifig-scale set, we would have a Millennium Falcon which is significantly bigger than this midi-scale offering.

So given our objective is display, rather than play, in both cases, I know which option I would take.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This would be a definite buy for me if it came with a 25th anniversary minifigure.

Gravatar

That isn't far off what I paid for 75105, so nope.

By in Spain,

Got it for lees than 70€; a damaged box amazon return (I recycle my boxes anyway). It should arrive tomorrow

There's probably gonna be be better deals but this is the only Millennium Falcon I like which fits my display xD so I think I waited enough

My only other MF also came without minifigs TRUFALCON-1
