Review: 71046 Collectable Minifigures Series 26 - Space
Posted by CapnRex101,71046 Collectable Minifigures Series 26 - Space further expands the collection of space-themed sets available this year, featuring twelve creative characters to populate them. They represent all aspects of space, between its possible denizens, exploration and future technologies.
Of course, this series also presents homages to some notable Space subthemes from LEGO history, continuing a trend across various recent series of Collectable Minifigures. M-Tron, Ice Planet 2002 and Blacktron II are all represented, alongside a selection of original characters and those inspired by space archetypes.
Summary
71046 LEGO Minifigures - Series 26 - Complete, 103 pieces.
Despite its singular focus on space, this series provides an amazing character selection
- Ingenious ideas for minifigures
- Tributes to classic figures
- Good variety of subjects
- High standard of detail, like most Collectable Minifigures
- Alien Beetlezoid could have linked back to Insectoids
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
Minifigures
Each minifigure stands on a printed base, featuring an attractive starfield pattern. I would have been satisfied with the normal black base and the stars are hardly noticeable when viewing the series from a distance, although this design looks superb and exclusive bases for special series of Collectable Minifigures are welcome.
LEGO has produced a number of modern astronaut minifigures, including a prior Collectable Minifigure from series fifteen. The new Spacewalking Astronaut matches its surface-bound precursor, so the torso decoration is similar, with a little Classic Space emblem and relatively realistic detail on the chest pack.
I like the subtle stripes on the legs, continuing around the sides and complementing the printed arms, as well as the previous Astronaut minifigure, once again. Moreover, the back of the torso and head are fully detailed, even though these surfaces are normally hidden by the helmet and backpack propulsion unit.
The propulsion unit is, unsurprisingly, a new element. I hope this piece sees continued use in future Space sets because it looks excellent, without being needlessly specialised. In fact, the studs and clips mean this backpack could be adapted for other minifigure types. It serves as an effective propulsion unit though, complete with a uniquely printed 2x3 tile on the back.
Another unique tile forms a reflective camera lens over the astronauts' shoulder, while the 1x1 slopes connected to the arms feature directional controls. The variety of new printed elements used here is admirable, although there are clearly more innovative characters in this series, as comparable astronauts have appeared before.
The outwardly mundane Imposter is a great example. This is a wonderful idea for a minifigure, wearing a suspiciously angular suit and a rigid smile, not to mention a conspicuous antenna on his head. The same element appears in 75581 Minions' Music Party Bus, but it was presumably developed for this minifigure.
Similarly, the hair element underneath is new and features a hole for the antenna on top, with some nice texture around the back and sides. Viewing this figure from behind also reveals the rectangular door printed on its back, which removes any doubt regarding the true identity of the Imposter.
Turning the head around reveals a diminutive alien inside, piloting the minifigure like a mech! Two more aliens are supplied as well, each featuring one eye and represented by lime green nanofigures. These printed nanofigures are exactly the same size as the printed alien, so you can imagine them clambering into the mech to join their colleague.
A mech disguise is not the only way for aliens to explore Earth, however, as the Alien Tourist demonstrates. This alien is instead hiding in plain sight and features a colourful Hawaiian shirt, decorated with leaves and stars. This pattern continues across the dual-moulded arms and the legs are dual-moulded too, forming shorts.
Additionally, the teal fedora looks excellent, returning from the Film Noir Detective, but making its first appearance in this colour. The alien's large eyes are perfect too, inspired by the classic Grey often featured in science fiction and already portrayed as a minifigure in the sixth series of Collectable Minifigures, over a decade ago.
The alien's friendly smile is charming and the character obviously appreciates Earth, based on his T-shirt. Furthermore, this figure comes equipped with a camera and a dark azure backpack, which are lovely accessories, although I think a printed map with directions to Earth could have been fun as well.
71018 Collectable Minifigures Series 17 saw the release of the Retro Space Hero and now the Retro Space Heroine joins the range. I am usually averse to LEGO producing male or female versions of an existing minifigure in a subsequent series, as such figures are not very creative, but this example is exceptionally executed and cleverly mirrors the style of the previous design, without feeling repetitive.
The triple-moulded helmet is new and includes an orange ponytail at the back, but the helmet shape is rather familiar from the Retro Space Hero. The metallic chest panel and printed arms are also near-identical between the pair, while the lightning bolt designs and stripes on the legs match too.
Unfortunately, the retro blaster from the original Space Hero does not return. Presumably, the mould is no longer in use, as the piece was actually manufactured in pearl gold for Killer Moth, so would not even have needed a new colour. However, the simpler blaster is a fine alternative and I love the robot dog, which features pink eyes and miniscule bolts around its mouth.
Space-themed Collectable Minifigures offer a perfect opportunity to revisit some older Space subthemes and the M-Tron Powerlifter represents one of the most memorable such ranges. Despite comprising only nine sets over two years, M-Tron is beloved for its distinctive colour scheme and use of magnets, which had been limited to trains before 1990.
This minifigure recreates the colours and general design of the original astronauts, albeit with dual-moulded legs, slightly greater detail on the torso and a more complex helmet. I think this strikes an effective balance between capturing the style of the classic figure and matching the level of detail across modern minifigures, especially with the astronaut's bulky accessory.
As his name suggests, this character specialises in lifting heavy objects, alluding to the many magnetic cranes found in M-Tron sets. He therefore wears a large backpack with an attached claw, linked by a new flexible cable. The combined cable and claw element is highly specialised, but could be useful for adding mechanical detail and it looks fantastic with this minifigure.
Also, I like the 1x2 plate with printed hazard stripes on the backpack, as well as the printing on the sides of the legs. The claw looks excellent as well, including a stud in the middle to secure the supplied cargo box, which features a tile decorated in exactly the style of M-Tron. The only disappointment I have is the lack of a trans-lime green visor, but the printed heads-up display is a good compromise, as trans-lime green has been retired.
While lacking the nostalgic appeal of the M-Tron Powerlifter, the Nurse Android is brilliantly detailed and instantly identifiable for science fiction settings. The colour combination of white, medium azure and trans-light blue is appealing and I love the modified Star of Life emblem on the android's chest, as it seems the star has received an extra point in the future!
Moreover, the battery symbol on the back looks perfect and the arms are nicely decorated too, with temperature and heartbeat monitors found on each wrist. The arms' trans-light blue colour certainly conveys the android's presumably futuristic origins and I like the calm facial expression as well, befitting a nurse.
However, I suspect the accessories will be the primary draw for many people, as this android looks after an exclusive Spacebaby! These adorable additions to LEGO Space first appeared last year, in 71037 Collectable Minifigures Series 24, although the pink version presented here is new, matching Lenny from 70841 Benny's Space Squad. A bottle is also provided.
By contrast, the Flying Saucer Costume Fan lacks any accessories, but his unique headgear more than makes up for that. A neck attachment is ingeniously used as the actual flying saucer, with a trans-clear 2x2x2 dome on top, so the minifigure's head forms the alien riding inside! This design works incredibly well and the metallic silver saucer element features great texture on its underside.
The torso and legs are covered with a pattern of stars, similar to that on the aforementioned minifigure bases. Additionally, the Earth and the Moon are shown on the reverse, providing a splash of colour. Like the Imposter, I think this is a fantastic idea for a figure and the execution has proven equally impressive.
Ice Planet 2002 is another iconic subtheme of Space, well known for introducing trans-neon orange and unique cold-weather astronauts. These astronauts have inspired the Ice Planet Explorer, which takes the same approach to modernising the original design as the M-Tron Powerlifter. The original colour scheme is preserved as far as possible, but the level of detail has increased.
The heavy shoulder armour looks tremendous and displays the Ice Planet astronauts' snow-capped insignia on one side, although I wish the metallic silver tubes had also been retained from the original minifigure. However, the fur around the collar is very familiar, while the spiked crampons printed on the feet are a marvellous addition.
In addition, the explorer's helmet is exceptionally detailed and reflects the style of the helmets from 1993, complete with an antenna on the left side. An alternative hair piece is included too, along with a brick-built chainsaw and an Ice Planet penguin! The penguin is superb and I love how its visor matches the astronaut's helmet, but the recent retirement of trans-neon orange is unfortunate for the chainsaw.
Joining this robotic penguin and the Nurse Android is the Robot Butler, whose torso bears a resemblance to Tee Vee from Alpha Team, based on the chest-mounted screen. Whether this was intentional or not, the whole design appears delightfully retro, perhaps complementing the Retro Space Heroine and her previous male counterpart.
The reverse of the robot is unmistakably retro, recreating the tape recorder 1x2 tile available in numerous sets since 1990. The printed bolts are welcome and continue onto the arms and the head, with the latter encased in a spherical trans-bright green helmet. This component distorts the head underneath, giving the Robot Butler a completely unique appearance.
Naturally, the legs are helpful in this regard too. The corrugated shape gives the impression of flexibility and I like the cylindrical wheels on the feet, even though they are static. The butler is equipped with a whisk and a saucepan, containing something in the process of being whipped.
Like robots, aliens are intrinsically associated with space and the Alien Beetlezoid is the third such being from this series. As the name suggests, this figure evidently takes inspiration from insects, so incorporates a new head with moulded mandibles, an elongated cranium and four eyes. These are welcome features, ensuring the minifigure does look truly alien!
Furthermore, the alien includes a pair of folded wings on its back, re-using a piece created for the Ladybird Girl Collectable Minifigure. The metallic silver and magenta accents are attractive and correspond with the torso and legs, while the legs themselves were introduced for the Faun Collectable Minifigure, but work equally well for an insectoid alien.
This minifigure is excellent, although I think the designers could have added a reference to the Insectoids range, or brought the Beetlezoid visually nearer to the aliens featured in the Galaxy Squad sets. Nevertheless, this is a fun alien design and its accessory appears suitably bizarre, representing an extraterrestrial plant.
Orion is one of the most recognisable constellations in the Northern Hemisphere sky, named after the Greek mythological figure. Reimagining the constellation in minifigure form is another inventive concept and has enabled the graphic designers to make maximum use of trans-purple glitter pieces for the head, arms and legs.
The silver speckles definitely create the desired impression of stars and this trans-purple hair element looks nice, making only its second appearance after the Sprinter. However, the silver printing on the legs is not as opaque as it should be, so I would rather dual-moulded legs were used instead. The metallic chest armour looks splendid though, featuring sculpted muscles in the style of Classical Greek armour.
Orion is normally depicted wielding a club, so the minifigure is armed accordingly. I am a little surprised LEGO chose to create a new piece for this weapon, as a similar one has existed for many years already, although this club lacks spikes. Regardless, it looks good, although I think the trans-purple shield is even better, emblazoned with the hunter's eponymous constellation.
The final minifigure reminds me very much of Space Police III, as the Blacktron Mutant would fit seamlessly into its gallery of villains! The famed Blacktron II uniform is instantly recognisable from its black and white colours and the Blacktron emblem, although various minor details have been added, such as a metallic silver belt buckle and a single kneepad.
Only one kneepad is needed, as the minifigure's other leg has transformed into an alien claw, using the same piece as the Beetlezoid above. Moreover, this figure features two arms on the right side, while a section of the face has mutated as well. The result looks brilliantly gruesome, although you cannot easily revert the minifigure to a conventional Blacktron II astronaut.
While that option would have been welcome, it would also have limited the mutations to some extra parts, likely losing the mismatched arms and legs. That would be a shame, especially as the Blacktron Mutant carries a pair of blasters in its lime green hands. I think a third laser would have been fun, arming this minifigure to the absolute maximum!
Overall
Despite its enormous potential, I was sceptical when rumours of 71046 Collectable Minifigures Series 26 - Space began to circulate. After all, there have already been various space-oriented Collectable Minifigures, so I questioned whether a dedicated series was necessary. Fortunately, the designers have come up with some exceptional ideas, so the range feels innovative.
I think the modern incarnations of astronauts from older Space subthemes are realised well and those will doubtless be highlights for many fans. However, I am also very satisfied with the less obvious concepts, such as the Imposter and the Flying Saucer Costume Fan. In fact, there are no major weaknesses to the series, in my opinion, even though some characters are inevitable standouts.

Very creative! I really hope we see the M-Tron Powerlifter's cable part become more common.
I'm gonna have to get the whole series on Minifiguresplus. They're beautiful.
The nurse looks like a happy kidnapper with the evil face.

I did the same and I’m thiiiiiiis close to ordering a second set, they look so great in these high quality pictures.
Imma be real, I would have liked at least one new color of a classic space figure—but something bizarre like neon green or turquoise
They've been showing up at just about every major chain that carries them locally, so I bought what should be an untouched case on the 16th. Last week, I found a 30/36 case and bought the whole thing before finding another store that had pegged what looked like two full cases. I was able to get the codes to scan, but there was no database connected to them. I used a text list of the codes to cherry pick what should be every human suit, alien tourist, UFO, and Space Baby, plus some of the bugs and Orions. This is the first time I can recall having found so many before seeing a review posted.
Overall a brilliant series. My only nitpick is I wish the Earth and Moon were printed on the front of the costume.
The Beetlezoid uses the same design for the torso as the Galaxy Squad bugoids, so I would count that as a reference :p
The missing trans-neon is shame, such a pity lego stopped making those colours.
Alien Beetlezoid and the butler are disapointing all other figs are great.
Any lore for the penguin?

That is a good point, but the overall minifigure does not really come across as being related to those from Galaxy Squad, in my opinion, other than being an insectoid alien. The head in particular does not match the aesthetic of Galaxy Squad aliens at all.

It's Emperor Dreadflipper's apprentice, who was turned evil through subtle manipulation and secret legends, who then slaughtered the hatchlings and was encased in life-saving armor after being bested by his former best friend in mortal combat and left to die. What's this fearsome penguin's name? There are some that call him.... Tim.
The Beetlezoid is definitely a Galaxy Squad throwback, with a very similar torso design to the Buggoid and a name that fits into the naming scheme of those aliens (Buggoid, Mantizoid, Mosquitoid)

You can just flip the arms
About that Alien Tourist:
I wonder whether this could be Roger (from https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397306/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) or Paul (from https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1092026/?ref_=fn_al_tt_10).
"Alien Beetlezoid could have linked back to Insectoids"
I second this. Insectoids is my favorite LEGO Space theme, and I went so far as to make my Minecraft Skin and most of my profile pictures a Zotaxian because I love the blue and silver color scheme.
That said, it's colors aren't far off from the Insectoids, and both the mold style and name Beetlezoid calls to mind Galaxy Squad. People have long theorized the baddies from Galaxy Squad might be the giant Bilgen Bugs the Insectoids had to fight, so I'm taking this as further evidence the themes are connected!
Definitely a must buy, even for those of us who really didn't get into the Space theme much. Some of them for me are meh (I'm looking at you UFO costume guy) but the pink spacebaby just melts my crabby old heart. Awwww.
Interested to see if the QR code thing works like it did for the last CMF wave.
Just hope this show up in my area soon as I want the full set. Thankfully the Bricksearch App has already added all the matrix codes to make them easier to find.
I love all the throwbacks, though I think the android nanny is one of the standouts design wise.
I might be mistaken but maybe Orion's legs couldn't have been dual molded because the plastic used for transparent pieces might not bond well with the opaque plastic.
Anyway the print should be better.
If I could only get one of the it'd be the space heroine because I really want that dog but the fig I like the most is the alien tourist.. and the only fig I like no part of is the beetlezoid alien, it kinda feels like the harpee of the previous series and not just because of the legs piece
When we first heard about this series all those months ago I was rather looking forward to it. It would be the first non-licensed series I'd bought the complete set of. Unfortunately, when we saw the first leaked images it was not what I was expecting. Now I see detailed images of them all I must say I'm not inclined to buy any of them. As a classic space fan that is extremely disappointing, as I expected the majority to be aimed at collectors such as me.
These have already been available in Ohio at retail and I have been fortunate enough to snag those that were left behind. The QR code on the box bottom is 100% accurate using the Brick Search camera scanner. It would be nice if that were offered here through Brickset or the app.
I would like a classic spaceman in a new colour , but overall , this is one of my favorite cmf series .
Thanks for the review.
I'm all in too, the figures should arrive early this month.
The more I see the M-Tron and Ice Planet figure, the more I'm thinking about making two small crews of three or four. The prices will decide. Maybe the parts will show up later in Pick a Brick.
Didn't expect the retro Space Girl to have a ponytail. Now I feel limited in looking for hair pieces for when she is not wearing the helmet.
I don't mind this series not having a classic Space figure. I do mind that Lego makes it a scavenger hunt to hunt for the pieces.
There is a leaked set that will feature two colours we had before, but they don't have the airtanks and simple faces.
There's also a cool Futuron torso coming up, but I think it really needs one of the new helmets in red with a blue visor. The legs of the new City Space figure seem to match though.
Great series.. Well not a 'great' execution of a good idea (IMO), but great for me as I do not feel any regret about skipping another what I see as a lackluster series. Thanks for helping me save money again, LEGO!!!!
If LEGO wanted my money, they would have been all classic era type Space 'guys' with solid colors, or even futuron based. But again, some will love it, and I love keeping my money.
Not really interested in any of these. As a few people have already said, a new classic spaceman colour would have been great. Surprised that it wasn’t included.
For the first time i have ordered full set of CMFs. They look great and are fully useful for my space mocs. I was surprised to learn i can buy the whole set in preorder with a 10% discount. I just need to wait a week, because of the bank holiday in my country. Very nice figs, and i like that those bases are printed with stars, with 12 of them I can make nice patterns for space mocs!

Heaven forbid TLG do something new and interesting, rather than continue to peddle out boring Classic Space recolors for "collectors" who will never be satisfied. I don't like being so negative, but this is such a silly, self-centered perspective!
What did you do to deserve the majority of these being aimed at you? You bought some space sets a few decades ago, and now TLG is beholden to your perspective on anything space-related? This attitude has been tossed at the entire Space revamp recently, in City, Friends, Technic, any of them. This idea that Classic Space is the only "real" Space, and anything else is lesser or worthless. It's weird and gross. Stop doing it please.

Why is your opinion or desire better (or worse) than his? Do you really have to reply like that, in such an agressive tone?
And btw, I actually agree with him. I had high hopes for this collection, but after seeing them I only want 2-3 minifigures - Orion, Alien Tourist and maybe the Android Nurse. The rest is really not my cup of tea.
Can't wait for that Ice planet one!

Sadly it's molded with the red magnet part together, so they are inseparable.
I don't see how the Alien Beetlezoid *isn't* a reference to Galaxy Squad. Its name is just like that theme's monsters (Alien Buggoid, Alien Mosquitoid, Alien Mantizoid) and its sculpts and printing would easily fit into the theme with a different color palette. It almost feels like an unused antagonist from another wave of the theme that never was.
The Robot Butler is so charming. Unusual color choice for the head, though--makes it look like a lightbulb. I might have preferred the globe to be clear rather than green in that case, especially since bright green doesn't feel as retro-LEGO as yellow-green would have been. I wish those colors hadn't been retired.

One difference is that I'm not "extremely disappointed" when sets aren't aimed at me. Some folks seem to have a very entitled and poorly informed approach, and it gets old after a while.
There's a difference between not being a fan of something, and being "extremely" anything when a product isn't directed squarely at you. It's a toy, and if this one doesn't appeal to you then the next one might, and at least you've saved some money. But some folks get personally offended when something doesn't have their name on it. That's weird.
When something is released that doesn't appeal to me, I'm over the moon cuz that means it'll be easier to cross it off the list. There are already way too many sets for me to collect all of the ones I like, so TLG making sets that I don't like is a-ok with me. If you don't like anything that TLG is putting out, you can go buy retired sets. But getting red in the face because they aren't making 12 more Classic Space recolors is just silly! Broaden your horizons, get some perspective
To add to the discussion about tradition...this is not an AFOL series and there won't be one because these are mass-market toys for kids and casual collectors first and foremost. And for the volume of classic fanservice in this series already, how much more could you truly expect? We have revival figures of M-Tron, Blacktron, Ice Planet, and a Classic Spacebaby. I find that pretty exceptional, and LEGO could have gotten away with fewer nostalgia characters because it'd be safer to release more things that aren't attached to a bygone IP with a niche following.
(And just to offer my perspective, as a younger fan, the nostalgia characters are actually the lesser entries for me because I'm one of those people who doesn't have inherent nostalgia for them. LEGO had to balance the subject matter to reach more people, and I would probably end up wanting far fewer figures if each was a nostalgia piece.)
@CapnRex101 Is the sign on the back of the Robot Butler's head and on the back and arm of the Android Nurse the same sign as on 71037-2 Robot Warrior? Seems to be the space robot sign...
Also happens to be similar to the Prime Empire sign, but that's probably just a coincidence.

Wow. What an overreaction, and a misunderstanding of what I was actually saying. I don't want recoloured versions of classic spacemen either, I already have plenty in the correct colours from the original sets. I didn't say they have to make something that appeals to me, I simply stated that this wasn't what I expected, and therefore I'm disappointed. You have rather blown that out of proportion with the overly used "entitlement" argument, trotted out whenever someone has a negative opinion. My only entitlement is to be allowed to express positive and negative opinions.

What would that have been, in your eyes? We've got some major and minor callbacks to classic themes. What were collectors looking for that isn't here? I don't know what you would have been expecting
Oh, there's some really creative ones here! Definitely gonna have to see if I can pick up a few.
I might try to get a couple of the astronaut figures. They would complement the ISS and Discovery Shuttle sets.
@CapnRex101 the Alien Beetlezoid IS a direct reference to Galaxy Squad. The torso design is nearly identical to the alien minifigs GS001 and GS008.

Thanks for the tip!
I think you're right.
An Insectoids reference would be totally out of place here. The Insectoids are just humanoid aliens who have disguised their ships as bugs to blend in on an alien world. The characters themselves are not bug-like at all and putting their logo or something on an actual bug would just be a cheap reference for the sake of a reference. The Galaxy Squad angle is much more appropriate for that figure.

"To add to the discussion about tradition...this is not an AFOL series and there won't be one because these are mass-market toys for kids and casual collectors first and foremost.
LEGO had to balance the subject matter to reach more people, and I would probably end up wanting far fewer figures if each was a nostalgia piece.)"
You say bygone IP, but classic Space has been and will be represented in puzzles, keychains, cuddly toys, alarm clocks and more.
Is it fan service? Lego is a company that wants to make money. Meaning that the demand must be there in order for them to keep slapping on that cool logo on their figures and bricks.
Between this, the sets and the new Build-a-minifigure parts, the space fans are well treated. I'm jealous, next pirates? :)

@8BrickMario:
I actually just realized I have a use for that TBG bubble helmet, so I’m glad it’s not clear. We’ve had clear before.
@Feroz:
It’s important to remember that many of the current set designers grew up on the early minifig themes, so they’re often including throwbacks to those for their amusement more than anything else.
The one thing I think they dropped the ball on was the Blacktron figure, for reasons that many other people have already gone into.
But that Orion figure is just so pretty, easily making up the difference.
And I love the little penguin that comes with the Ice-Planet character.
i love these. I might just have to get the whole series for this one

I thought the same thing!
I'm not much of a minifig collector, but I want these....all of them! Can't even decide on favorites, they are all great.
There's not a single figure in this series that I'm interested in. Most of them look totally random and uninspired to me, and the themes referenced were at the tail end of my time playing with LEGO space, so don't push the nostalgia buttons for me.
The most interesting piece to me is the printed base with the stars.
Had there been a new colour of Classic Spaceman I would have bought multiples of it (provided the QR code thing worked like with the first batch of the last CMF series).
As it stands I can save money. Happy for those who find something to like from this selection.

"The Beetlezoid is definitely a Galaxy Squad throwback, with a very similar torso design to the Buggoid and a name that fits into the naming scheme of those aliens (Buggoid, Mantizoid, Mosquitoid)"
It's also breaking through the check off sheet, suspiciously similar to how the buggoids were on the front of the Galaxy Squad boxes.
It doesn't happen too often tha they reuse aprint from CMF-parts, but this time, ythey should consider the camera lens from the spacewalker
I have lots of positive thoughts about this series, but all I can think to say right now is:
Argh! The dreaded ponytail strikes again, this time limiting the use of the Retro Space Heroine's helmet. Darn it.
Also, I have to disagree about alternate gender follow-up figures. Considering Collectible Minifigs is usually the only way we'll see figs of certain styles, such as the Retro Space duo in question, I feel it's nothing short of necessary, creative or not.
Not to poke the bear, and this is slightly tangential, but this article highlighted a point of confusion with titling decisions in regards to CMF minifigures from the website staff - I saw today that Retro Space Hero was renamed from Retro Spaceman today (which I double checked the official Lego product listing for Series 17 that's still live online, Retro Space Hero is correct), yet "Ladybird Girl" is called that while the official Lego product description for Series 21 calls it "Ladybug Girl," and hold on, before someone says it's a US edit, I swapped to the en-gb URL, still *Ladybug,* and I even VPN connected to a UK server to be absolutely sure, and it's still *Ladybug.* I understand that this site is UK-based and there have been lots of comment debates over ladybug vs. ladybird and it looks like Huw put his foot down with the page for 71029-4 to prevent an edit war, but if the evidence I'm finding shows that the minifigure is called "Ladybug Girl," then "Ladybird Girl" isn't "the correct name for the costume here." If there's any official Lego materials marking the confusingly avian name, citing them would be useful in the notes section.
https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/series-21-71029
...that all said, the minifigure selection in this series is pretty good and this review does a good job highlighting their benefits and weaknesses, such as the Orion figure.
I was thinking skip these minifigures although I am a great fan of space theme. Then this review make me change mind. I just placed pre-order right after reading this review.

I'm playing that right now, actually.
This won't be my first complete CMF series (that would be Series Four, and I've managed to get several since then), but it will be the first series I get all at once, as I've already preordered a complete set on eBay. This review only has me looking forward to its arrival more. I love the printed base, and I love that the Ice Planet Explorer has a red hairpiece, referencing https://brickset.com/minifigs/sp017/ice-planet-female-(doctor-kelvin) And as a longtime fan of Lost In Space, I also appreciate that the Robot Butler's leg element resembles that series' Robot's legs.

Is this true? Very interesting. I enjoy using Insectoids minifig parts in space layouts. But, I never considered the theme to be very insect-like.
I also agree the the Cap'n's criticism is unwarranted, but for a different reason. I understand that the look and coloration of the fig is barely referential to Galaxy Squad.
Yet, to me that's all the more reason for its charm. It's something really different that will be great for fans of Lego space or Star Wars. (Lord knows, we can't get anything like this from Lego SW. It would deplete their profit party).
I ordered an entire box of these figs. Something I haven't done since HP 1.

I'd be curious to see how they'd do a Pirates series because that's a narrower theme with perhaps less modern mass appeal than horror or sci-fi. Creating a balanced assortment could be trickier there. I'm not personally much into soldiers and pirates, but if such a series had a mermaid, there'd be one figure for me!
I'll definitely hold out for a Castle series myself. It could take several more years, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't the next genre series.
@Alia_of_AGL:
Are you saying there is a Duck season! Rabbit season! thing going on this website? :-D
@PurpleDave:
True, I have seen/read the love some of the designers have for classic Space. But they do need to request things like the revised helmet in a new colour. And I can't see Lego approving things like the orange and brown space figures if they don't think there is a substantial demand for it.

Unfortunately, when we saw the first leaked images it was not what I was expecting. Now I see detailed images of them all I must say I'm not inclined to buy any of them. As a classic space fan that is extremely disappointing, as I expected the majority to be aimed at collectors such as me."
Stop doing it please."
My only entitlement is to be allowed to express positive and negative opinions."
You have the misfortune of having come in after people stupider than you. When this series was first revealed we really did have multiple people saying It Should Have Been A Series Of Just Classic Space Minifigs In Different Colors, What An Obvious Blunder.

Thanks for a great review.
My favorite is definitely the Alien Tourist. :-)
@CapnRex101: Where does the piece count of 68 come from? I did not count all pieces from your photographs, but I can’t believe 68 is true for all 12 minifigures. Must be more…?
With CMFs you can’t please all of the people all of the time and there in lies the difference between completist collecting and specific collecting.
Variety is good on every level to attract multiple types of customer.
Personally I’m relieved to want less, buy less and save money!
Revert the minifigure to a conventional Blacktron II astronaut wouldn't be hard. White right leg, black arm and head with similar print without mutation. And the blaster in each hand!
P.S. Galaxy Squad set 70701 looks very nice
Yeah, that´s flawless, well done Lego
The Ice Planet Explorer reminds me of the power armor from the Fallout games.
ICE PLANET 2002 MENTlONED!!!!!!
WHAT IS A BAD SPACE THEME??!?!?!?!?
I've going to come from a different tangent and suggest that the Alien Beetlezoid is fact an accompaniment to the new City Space sets!
The bubble-like structure and hues of the piece of flora in their grasp closely relates to some of the extra extra-terrestrial flora seen in those sets, growing from rocky structures, such as in 60434, or being examined by scientists like in 60433.
As a Space - and minifigure - fan, I absolutely adore this series. Such a wonderful line-up of original and reimagined Space themes, I feel there's something for everyone here. My kids and I had a blast pouring over the images above and picking out our favourites - we're very much looking forward to getting these!
"Despite comprising only nine sets over two years, M-Tron is beloved for its distinctive colour scheme and use of magnets, which had been limited to trains before 1990."
Actually over here it was even worse as we only got seven M-Tron sets. The other two were North America exclusives (of which one wasn't even a proper set but just instructions for a weird looking "Super-model" made out of parts from three of the regular sets.)

LMAO some of you really need to go touch grass.
I'm excited for the return of Dr Kelvin (or perhaps her child, all grown up?), the M-tron power lifter, and the android nurse. The rest don't do as much for me in terms of using them in MOCs, though they'd make for a fun little scene in a city, perhaps as cosplayers at a con? I would love to see the ice planet armor and lifter show up in PAB, but I have my doubts. Guess I'll just have to use the scanner to pick up a few for squads of each. I've got plenty of trans neon orange saws to swap over for proper coloring.

Based on the space babies selling out here in less than 24 hours, it wouldn't surprise me to see them return this Summer.
As for this series, I can't say I'm overjoyed for any of them but will most likely be overcome by the need to hunt and look for a couple.
I love this series. They really should do more themed ones (space, castle, fantasy creatures, so on) - I can see myself getting any of these and being happy about it. Multiple times even.
The only gripe I have with this series is the lack of more classic space remakes (hope this does well enough that we get another series soon-ish) and the Blacktron mutant - love it, however I hate that I can't make a full blacktron soldier out of it (without mutations). I also find having only half the mutant parts sad as well. Those are great parts, and I would have liked to see them in pairs.
@Alia_of_AGL:
@Huw is known to anglify the set names, but the minifig names are controlled by Bricklink. So the set is Ladybird, and the minifig is Ladybug.
@8BrickMario:
Doing one pirate series wouldn’t be hard. Doing two would be stress-inducing. There were three navies, plus the pirates, plus the islanders in the original run. If you didn’t get too fancy with it, that would allow one leader, one male, and one female per faction, for 15, plus you could do mermaids, a reimagined Davey Jones & crew, some civilians. Pick twelve, and you’ve got a Pirates wave ready to sail.
@Feroz:
Getting a new mold requires making a pitch and getting approved. Changing the color for something that’s not colorlocked just requires assigning one of your available slots.
These are fun! I feel like there's a little bit of something for everyone with this selection.

@Ridgeheart:
Did you sneak a Buck O'Hare reference in there?
It actually would make sense to make a lime green Space person since they used that uniform colour in one of the Lego board games.
As for people getting upset about orange becoming more available. Would that be the ones that stole them out of books and asked scalper prices or the ones that paid and expected the figure to stay rare?
It's nice to see orange become more available, but why not include the airtank and a classic face?
Is it to get a few more sales on Pick a brick or not to piss off the ones that bought the book?
The biggest complaint I have is about the mold mark right on the Beetlezoid’s “mouth”. It’s quite visually annoying in person. Other than that, I’m really liking this series.

But where does one get such information?
I watch dozens of LEGO YouTube channels and follow several sites that feature leaks, but I have never heard of this one before.
Strange.

Happy to help. :-)
I watch Brick Clicker on YouTube. A lot of the videos are things you probably already know, but there are some good leaks to be found.
The Futuron torso is in the video of 5 days ago. That one also has a cool Space armor piece.
The alien diner is in the video of 7 days ago.
@Feroz : thank you.
You know, the funny thing is that I follow Promobricks and I get their notifications. They have an entire article about that GWP, yet I never got that particular notification. And somehow all the YouTube channels I follow stayed clear of the subject.
Anyway, now that I have seen the pictures I know that I don't need the set. I have plenty of the white retro Classic Spacemen and the orange one I have from the book he came in originally. Plus they don't even have airtanks in the GWP strangely enough, making them even less desirable.

Hard to say, but I'll raise a Minifig, Utensil Goblet to having more of them! I'm absolutely chuffed that the ice planet figure is a redhead, I know I have at least one Kelvin in my Ice Station set, though I'm not sure I have another head for my eventual Deep Freeze build. :/

I'm working my way through much of the late 80s to the mid 90s, building as much as I can acquire. I've completed the Ice Station and have a few mods tested, but it's away in storage now while I work on other stuff. I theoretically have Deep Freeze, but haven't tested building it yet. The eventual goal is to build some old-school dioramas out of all the sets in a theme.
I tend to build the sets complete first, and then make some minor mods. Building modern versions of sets is mostly beyond me (or at least my interest), so I just like to fix things I don't like about the originals or add cool stuff to them.
@dimc:
Cool! So what place would the new Ice Planet figure have in your diorama?

I'd probably get a couple of them and swap a few heads to make a long-range exploration/rescue squad. I made a MOC of a search and rescue vehicle a while back, I'd like to try updating that when I get around to doing IP2k2 again. Turns out that aquazone propellers make for great snowblower blades!

Sometime in the late 1980s, I saw in a magazine (Popular Science, I think) a short article about a new plastic that had the effect of the edges seeming to glow. I recall thinking that this could make for some cool toys someday.
In 1990 we got Transparent Fluorescent Yellow in the M-Tron sets.
Edit: actually, it might have been a new type of pigment that could be added to plastic, I don't remember the details.
I just bought the M-Tron minifig thanks to the QR code and… I of course added an old trans-neon green visor to the helmet, and it just looks so right. This visor will never be removed (even by an evil Black Tron mutant).
Hope I’ll find an old Ice Planet saw too !
Trans neon green is definitely my favorite Lego color.

"I just bought the M-Tron minifig thanks to the QR code and… I of course added an old trans-neon green visor to the helmet, and it just looks so right. This visor will never be removed (even by an evil Black Tron mutant).
Hope I’ll find an old Ice Planet saw too !

I may have to get some of my old parts out of storage and follow suit. Also, what are your feelings on Trans-Neon Orange? It may not be my all-time favorite Lego color, but it's definitely my favorite trans color.
I believe Orion would look great to the "Night Protector" from Series 22 in my opinion
