Review: 10391 Over the Moon

Posted by ,

Pharrell Williams' biopic Piece by Piece, which is rendered entirely in LEGO form, premieres on October 11th and a tie-in set 10391 Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams is now available at LEGO.com.

An indistinct spaceship makes a brief appearance in the film's trailer, so presumably space travel features in it. That was presumably a good enough excuse to make a model of one, in a year when the Danish toy manufacturer's product range has been dominated by space-related sets.

Summary

10391 Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams, 966 pieces.
£94.99 / $109.99 / €109.99 | 9.8p/11.4c/11.4c per piece.

An eye-catching model unlike anything LEGO has made before

  • Impressive looking jet stream with solid base
  • Sleek looking spacecraft with gold canopy
  • Wide assortment of minifig heads in varied skin tones
  • Prints on all parts
  • Back of spacecraft looks unfinished
  • Minifig head rack arguably superfluous and has bloated the price

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Reference

A spaceman and ship appear very briefly in the trailer, neither of which look anything like those in the set.

The completed model

It's hard to tell how big the model is from the box art and official pictures and, at almost 50cm high, it's taller than I expected it to be. It's certainly eye-catching and unlike anything LEGO has made before.

The space shuttle bursting through a plume of white smoke leaving a colourful jetstream in its wake looks fantastically dynamic.

The set includes two minifigs, Pharrell and his wife Helen Lasichanh, and an additional 49 heads in every colour currently used for licenced minifigures, all neatly arranged in a display stand entitled 'My Phriends'. There's a diverse selection of males, females, beards, glasses, and facial expressions.

The minifigures wear identical titanium-coloured spacesuits with finely printed logos and other details on the front and back, and come with matching helmets with gold visors in addition to hair for her and hat for him. The design is quite different to that seen in the still from the trailer, though, which includes a classic space logo on the front.

Apparently, 30 of the head prints are new, and most are double-sided, so if you want to swap out the heads of the figures for those that resemble yourself and a family member, there's a good chance you'll find some that match.

The rainbow jetstream stand is held at an angle with Technic beams hidden inside the smoke plume, which is designed to stop the whole thing toppling over.

The shuttle slots and clips onto the top and comes away easily for when you want to swoosh it around the room.

Various half-spherical elements have been used to good effect to form the smoke.

The space shuttle is named Atlantis Apartments, after the tower block in Virginia Beach where the singer grew up. The names, and the 2x2 round tiles with colourful decoration on the wings, are printed. Its design is clearly inspired by real-life space shuttles, so arguably it's a bit simplistic and boring.

The hole in the back that slots onto the protrusion at the top of the stand looks somewhat ugly, detracting from the overall sleekness of the ship, although it has been quite neatly integrated into the fuselage without looking like it's part of it.

Much was made in the set's promotional material about the new drum-lacquered gold cockpit element, and it certainly looks very cool, contrasting with the black surrounding it. It was good to find that it came packaged in its own bag to keep it free of scratches.

Inside, there are control panels and levers, and seats for two minifigs.

Verdict

The space shuttle and jetstream make an interesting and attractive display model unlike anything we've seen before. The dynamic positioning and smoke plume really give the impression that the ship is blasting up into space, and I like it.

The minifig heads and rack are a slightly bewildering inclusion. The intention is presumably to enable you to make a likeness of yourself, whatever you look like, to blast off into space in the shuttle, but will many people actually bother to do that? Or would they rather have paid less for the set?

So, who exactly is going to find this somewhat niche set appealing? Pharrell fans, presumably, and maybe those who enjoy the film, although I suspect that'll depend on whether it's a success and if a space shuttle features prominently in it.

The price of £94.99 / $109.99 / €109.99 for 966 pieces is not too bad I suppose, but I'm sure it would be more palatable if it was priced at £70 / $80 / €80 without all the heads.

Perhaps LEGO will Get Lucky and be Happy with sales figures, although I have my doubts...

Pharrell is absolutely trying to kill you with Plasma Wave. You've seen what he does to his friends; now see what he does to his enemies.

That said, I like this set and particularly that rainbow murderwave a whole lot more than I initially thought I would.

I only want the figures and heads for my purist customs. If we're lucky, they'll go the way of the heads from "Table Football" and "Icons of Play" and be available on PAB in a few months.

Anyways, I think that the sets a pretty good display piece, but i feel as if the rainbow smoke beam thing could have been downsized a little.

Expensive for a disembodied heads battlepack. I hope they all turn up on PAB eventually. I'd love to get them all.

By in Poland,

I have followed the career of Pharell for the last 25 years. Not too closely, but enough to be informed about his works in different fields. And I still struggle to see how this model relates to his career. I guess the movie will have an answer but it still is kind of an odd choice for first set from his "brand". I wish we would get a proper recording studio location with full minifigs representing actual artists involved in Pharells life and work. Oh well.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

This is such an odd choice for a LEGO set. It is eye-catching, and the design is good... But for me this feels like an over-reach of LEGO's IP tie-ins. I don't know how big/dedicated the Pharrell fanbase (Phanbase?) is, but are people outside that really going to be buying this over, say, Botanicals or even Creator sets?

Well, if Lion's Knight Castle was branded with Taylor Swift I would not buy it either.

I think I might. Swift's starting to grow on me. I've yet to completely listen to a single song of hers, but she riles all the wrong people, and I deeply appreciate that.

Gravatar

I'd rather take the heads over the jetstream at any time. Unnecessary to say, a standalone pack with just heads would have been a hot seller, as so many people want customization options.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

As a fan of Black spaceships ( looking at you Blacktron! ) , I like the ship ( although simplistic ) and the rainbow exhaust for display value. The extra heads don’t do it for me and jack up the price too much. Maybe for€45 excluding the heads. Looking at the comments, you should have no problem to sell those separately.
Also a missed opportunity to continue the “space” box-art!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

So many heads......yet I spot a severe lack of white males with glasses 8-(

Overall just a weird set, and this review doesn't change that one bit: This very much is what you see is what you get. I mostly see some okayish elements that just don't add up. The shuttle is rather simplistic, apart from that canopy nothing interesting here, and couldn't they have done that connection a bit more elegant? While that jetstream makes for a nice display (which is kinda wasted on a this shuttle), it overshadows it all, and makes this a rather pricey set for what it is. And then those heads.....just like with the 21337 : don't throw these in with some overpriced set, but just make a dedicated minifig builder set!

Maybe the movie will change everything, but as it is now, I feel this will even be a weird set for most Pharell fans. I just don't see much Pharell in this, and €110 is quite a lot for just the minifig which, dare I say, is hardly recognizable as him.

By in Germany,

I snarkily commented that this is how luxury brands create "value" when it was announced and I still feel that way. This is a nothing burger of a 20 Euro Creator 3in1 space shuttle recolored in black and gold with a lot of extra stuff lumped into the package to make it a little less obvious that there is no real content.

Well, since Huw measured the whole thing at 50cm high, that pen.., I mean that "jetstream with plume of white smoke" must be around 30cm. Maybe it's my inferiority complex, but I find that size quite impressive... ;-)

I still think if the point of all the heads was for representation, including a classic yellow smiley head would have been great. Oh well...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'm not sure, but this set is not totally dependent on the tie-in with Pharrell, is it?

I can imagine people buying because they just like the looks of it. If I liked it a bit more I might be one of those people, but I have too much other stuff on my wish list (and not enough space to display anything).

A Taylor Swift set would be bought just because of the tie-in, whether I like it or not (we've got a Swifty at home and I don't really mind that).

The next thing to do is to convince the seller that it is better to free storage space for ~50% off than not to sell at all. I find that quite logical =D.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The spacecraft alone is probably around 250 parts - which I will order on PaB. There are already plans online to Blacktronize this spaceship with trans-yellow, yellow and red parts - which I will do to some degree (you don't want to overdo it). The tail-end of the ship must also be fixed appropriately. Then this modified ship will be authorized to land on my custom 'Classic Space' landing pad. The suits are nice-ish but the helmets are not classic so no use really and no oxygen tanks???

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I am a sucker for space shuttle like builds, so I actually like the ship on its own more than I expected after seeing the entire set earlier.

Despite knowing little about Pharrell, I would have considered buying the ship alone for $40-$50.

The rest of the set is just bloat. I wonder if designers were up against a set-in-stone-by-contract price point, and had to add "something" to the ship.

For it to be a possible bargain it would have to at least contain some interesting contents.
The only piece in this set I have even the slightest interest in is the golden canopy. Even though I have no project where I would need one. Trans-yellow, trans-green, trans-blue or trans-red, those are the canopy colours I am typically looking for.
Everything else in this set is Meh for me. Even the heads, since I only use the classic yellow faces on my MOCs.

Who is Pharrell Williams?

I’m sorry, just kidding, I am now well informed about him by cultural sheep:
He is really phriendly and sings about being happy and lucky, he distances himself from writing about blurred lines- probably about past illegal builds and inappropriate Lego connections but I don’t know if that Spaceship stand is far removed enough?

I think he’s made himself a really beautiful set, I hope enjoys building it. The heads would have cost him a lot on pick-a-brick.

If LEGO cared about representation as much as they claim, they'd do something like this at a smaller scale so kids can actually afford it - something like the LEGO City People Packs, but with fleshie heads and probably no builds, so as to not inflate the price. Lord knows that between this set, the Foosball Table, Icons of Play, and those Harry Potter trunks that they have enough head prints to make 3 or 4 sets like what I just described. Or mildly interesting sets that immediately become uninteresting once you see the ridiculous RRP.

"I'm not sure, but this set is not totally dependent on the tie-in with Pharrell, is it?

I can imagine people buying because they just like the looks of it. If I liked it a bit more I might be one of those people, but I have too much other stuff on my wish list (and not enough space to display anything).

A Taylor Swift set would be bought just because of the tie-in, whether I like it or not (we've got a Swifty at home and I don't really mind that)."

I'm strongly considering buying it just because of how beautiful the contrail is, and how cool of a sculpture and display piece that makes it. The tie-in doesn't do anything for me positively or negatively... in my head, this might as well be a tie-in with No Man's Sky.

I'm hoping to swing by a LEGO store and see what it looks like in person to make my final decision. Honestly, this review's photos made me like the spaceship itself *less*... when it's not atop the contrail, it has very odd proportions, and Huw's stellar photos (pun not intended) makes that much clearer than the official images (thanks for the great review, Huw!).

Also, yeah, gotta love the TSwift appreciation that accidentally cropped up in various comments! XD

"too woke"

I'm genuinely asking... in what way is this set 'woke'?"

Someone commented "to woke for my taste, easy pass..." verbatim on the reveal post of this set, and i think these comments are referencing that.

By in Malaysia,

The spaceship is quite nice and fits two minifigs which is good. Rainbow jetstream is pretty too with the white smoke clouds. The abacus of heads is disturbing like someone mentioned earlier. Love the lady minifig’s hair which has great highlights. Overall it’s an okay set. I think ppl will still buy this at discounted price ofc..

The value is far from terrible in this set, for anyone who likes making custom minifigs with realistic skintones this seems like a good set to get, the main build is attractive and you get plenty of heads for customs.

That is a hilarious description. I've long thought about attempting to MOC a Lego abacus. Have there been any submitted to Ideas?

"Really weird editorializing. Who is this going to appeal to? The people who think it looks good, same as any other set. This performative bewilderment is so transparent."

Not to mention the weirdly low effort parts of the review. Took the liberty of rewriting it.

Pros:
- impressive looking jet stream with solid balance
- Sleek look spacecraft with gold canopy
- Wide assortment of minifig heads in varied skin tones
- Prints on all parts

Cons:
- Back of spacecraft looks unfinished
- Minifig head rack can be seen as superfluous

Thank you. I did write the +/- in a bit of a hurry this morning, and find it hard and tedious to review sets that I have no interest in, and no appreciation of the source material if they are licensed ones, which is why I don't do many nowadays.

Would you like to write reviews for us?"

Are you looking for more reviewers? I have thought about contributing reviews before, but in these days of YouTube I don't see many new user reviews on brickset and figured there wasn't much demand...

If you need more written review content I for one will try and contribute some more user reviews, maybe including my daughter's opinion too so it isn't just the usual AFOL moans. If I can manage to contribute a few fairly regularly, maybe you'd consider me for a brickset reviewer. ??

Thar certainly won't hurt! It may complicate things that you appepar to be in HK so getting sets to you may be problematic but we'll corss that bridge if and when we come to it.

"I only want the figures and heads for my purist customs. If we're lucky, they'll go the way of the heads from "Table Football" and "Icons of Play" and be available on PAB in a few months."

Several of these heads have appeared in other sets, and already are on Pick-A-Brick.

With a few modifications, we’ve got a great Predator set. I could also see buying it for the opportunity to swap in different LEGO sets blasting off.

The pros for this set are intriguing but I think it leans too heavily towards the con…trail.

I’ll see myself out.

Cockpit needs to be swapped for the trans yellow variant. Then a touch of yellow added.

Actually I'm normally in Australia, I'm just traveling at the moment! We get home I'll work on some sets and reviews!

I've never been a fan of the whole include-a-bunch-of-different-heads-so-people-can-better-identify-with-the-set-or-whatever thing because - while great for getting new minifig heads - it bumps up the price a lot more (and they really could just sell an Oops! All Heads polybag, though maybe not with that particular name), but also because they can only include a finite number of heads, which means a lot of people inevitably WON'T be able to pick a head to represent them, which kind of defeats the idea anyway.

Are the minifigure heads sienna brown or dark orange?
