Imagine currency being in increments of only $100.

Double Christmas? You're two months early, @Huwbot

Those two trans medium blue Plate 8x8s are not cheap anymore, with the color retired and this being the largest transparent plate ever made.

And, great, classic sets at that.

My first WV set. Also, the first set I bought that wasn't Star Wars.

Eh, it's a bit late, according to retailers around here. The instant that it's just barely socially acceptable to start putting out the Halloween merch, they're already starting to replace it with Christmas stuff.

Ooh I have this one. Santas legs up in the air always puts a smile on my face.

It's the only way to afford most of the Winter Village sets, particularly on the after-market...

A wonderful kid-level Winter Village set.

By in Malaysia,

Really charming little winter village set. There's just something about that Bakery building design that wins it for me. In 2010 this was quite cutting edge, and glad this style is now common across all LEGO themes.

By in New Zealand,

Charming little set.

I never got this, but I got 10199, which was released the year prior, and is better than this IMO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I absolutely love this set! The bakery itself is so cozy!

I see it as similar to the Japanese system. There are no decimals, so when you see $100, it is more like $1.

Or $100 is worth something, but when you need to pay a smaller bill, you use gold coins for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, or 40.

Then again, the tree stand sign says the big tree costs $200. Maybe trees are really rare.

Or this set was just set in the near future.

By in Hungary,

This is that time of the year, in Random Stuff of the Day.

By in Netherlands,

So I looked into the minifigures included in this set. Apparently "Dude Stuck In Slope, Inverted 45 2 x 2 with Flat Bottom Pin, Red Legs" does not count as a minifig, and as such, will never see the spotlight as the Random Minifigure of the Day.

Pour one out for our fallen demifig, and pray for the @Huwbot to change its mysterious mechanical mind.

Doesn't look THAT advanced, tbh.

7 minifigures and a half.

‘Advanced’ because it’s two months early for Christmas

Gravatar
By in France,

When the Winter village sets were only 51 euros, and not 100... I know the size is not the same compared to nowadays, but it was effective and charming enough. The price was also correct for 687 pieces (and cheaper on Amazon, a year later).

I have this one, I find it very nice, but it is still in the box, and it is a very bad idea.

Real life Lego currency for every reveal? Pretty much.

Japan did actually have the sen, which was 1/100 of a yen. They stopped minting those near the end of WW2 because of a lack of materials, and in 1953 they where officially demonitized since they lost their use because of inflation.

Ever since, it's indeed only the yen. They do still have 1 yen coins that are actually used a lot, even when everyone seems to hate those....5 yen coins are seen as good fortune and thus popular for donating at shrines. But for all practical purposes, anything lower than 10 yen coins are a bit of a hassle, as vending machines (which Japan has an awful lot of...) won't accept those. At the other side of the spectrum there's the 500 yen coin, which even at the current (pretty poor...) exchange rate is apparently still the highest nominally valued coin in regular circulation in the world.

Also fun little fact: while we generally start grouping bigger numbers on three digits, Japan and many other Asian countries tend to group on 4 digits, in case of Japanese after hyaku (100) and sen (1.000) you get man (10.000). A hundred thousand woud be "ju man" (literally ten ten-thousnd), and a million would be "hyaku man" (hundred ten-thousand). Luckily as a tourist I rarely have to deal with such big numbers, but when you see prices of expensive things like cars or houses, it gets rather confusing....

Only 10 days until my 20th trip to Japan :-)

All that aside, sorry, I have nothing to say about this set ;-)

By in Netherlands,

One of the first Winter Village sets after the toy store.

I miss this era. The 1x1 with tooth parts used for skis is so charming to see again!

Sets were in weird in-between beteen the blockiness of the 2000s, the curviness of also the 2000s and the specific detail pieces and SNOT that emerged in the 2010s because of licenses, the CMFs and a general shift in design philosophy. It wasn't until 2012 that this new era of building began with the second wave of Ninjago, which featured the new smaller system of SNOT brackets.
In 2010 things were just on the cusp of starting to not become simple straightforward builds anymore. Yet they were.

And I'm all for it!

Well, over here, Christmas begins in september, when seasonal sweets hit supermarket shelves. There's hardly space for helloween or even Thanksgiving.

I started out having the same opinion but have grown to love this one. And my kids never choose it for building when we get everything out in November, so I usually enjoy it myself.

It can't be Christmas - Mariah Carey hasn't thawed out yet!

But in all seriousness, they're selling Christmas stuff right next to the Halloween Candy in Walmart. I wish I was joking, but I'm not...

"I understood that reference." @Murdoch17, it's the Winter Soldier's activation codewords before his brainwashing was broken.
