From the golden era of City, I have lots of nostalgia from that time.
Bigger catch than expected, but still a big enough boat. But just barely.

It'll most likely capsize, even without the catch. That hull piece is not wide enough so if you build up too high it falls over.

It was the era of my first-ever LEGO set, 4435!
I think they're gonna need a bigger boat... maybe the one from 21350 will suffice?
I have this!
A great set, really nice marina boat.
With some dust and off white parts it does look dated now.
However this, the dive boat, fishing boat (the one with dark red accents) and sailboat (the latter all being 'Great Vehicles line') makes for an awesome marina.
I am curious why lego refuses to call these yachts or cruisers or whatever, AND give us a fishing boat as in a trawler or similar watercraft.
It would be like calling a creator house with a guy fishing 'fish market or fish monger' just because it has someone recreation fishing.
Jaws at home:
(Nah, it's a good set though)

I've been wondering for a while now, if you don't mind me asking - around how old are you? Because the math is really not lining up in my head, it seems like you can't be much older than like sixteen?
Either way, your comment makes me feel really old lol, my first exposure to Lego was in 2003.
I had a lot of fun with 4011, so I had to get this one, given the similarities. Sure, this one's smaller, but they both have the set number on the back of the hull, they both have a guy fishing for shark off of the fantail, and, of course, they both float!
I attended a stop motion camp as a kid where we made LEGO videos. One of them was “Funny Fishing” and it used this set. I didn’t make it. I was part of a team where two other kids completely overtook the conceptualizing, filming, and voice acting. My only role was having my name attached to it.
Oh yeah, this was a cute one I remember. At that point I was moving onto Star Wars, so I didn't pay much attention to it then, but maybe I should have.

I did the same thing! Except I had to pick up Cabin Cruiser after I bought this one because of their similarities. This is crazy, though. We had Cabin Cruiser not that long ago! I still think the vests in this one stink, at least the ones I got.

So it wasn't Duplo? Strange. I had it while growing up.
Ah, there's nothing like deep sea fishing.... said the shark.
He's got lifeless, black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. They don't seem to be livin' until they come at'cha.

Thanks! So that would be about 5 when his first set came out, and *checks profile* about 16 when he made an account here. Okay, that makes sense now.
I was 18 when I made an account here... Wdym that was over six years ago?? >_>

My first exposure to marriage was in 2003.

I had a feeling someone was going to swoop in with "I started playing with Legos in 1965" lol
To put my comment in perspective, I'm usually called "the young guy" in the forums I tend to hang around, with people 10+ years my senior... so to bump into someone on this site 8 years younger than me making comments about "the good old days of 2012" is making me feel like an old fart :-P
This was one of the first sets I got coming out of my dark ages. Got it and 7051 at the same time.

When did City really fall off? Like I have a vague idea of when City was "good" and the current state of affairs, but I'm struggling to pinpoint an exact moment the window shifted out of favor for City.
The only thing cooler than a boy out fishing with his dad is a boy and his dad building a LEGO set of a boy out fishing with his dad.

In terms of design it's at a peak now, but the sets are boring and like the 50th rendition of whatever it is.
I always loved civilian fishing vessels in LEGO.

4011 is one of my all time favorite sets. The serene look of the the set always made me wish I had it, sadly I never did. I also liked this set, but it severly lacked interior detail for a city set, that's why I passed it. Still looks good though.

Bigger boats attract bigger fish.
So are they intending to fish for sharks or is that an uninvited guest?

I would say the golden era of City for me is 2005-2010, but I like 2011 too.

Laughter turns to sobs on pre-recorded 8-track tape deck from 1973
I have a fond memory of this one even when it's not one I ever actually got.
In 2011 I had been on a long vacation trek to Scandinavia. On the return I traveled back by boat to Denmark. I had been on a boat to the UK before, but never a distance or size like the one I traveled on this journey back.
I was amazed that despite being on a vehicle there was an entire shopping center on there. The prices were rubbish for the most part of course, but two sets caught my eye: this one and the 4641 Speedboat. I considered getting this one as a souvenir, as I would have bought a boat on a boat. But it had been an expensive trip, as I had already found many unusual sets that had been languishing on forgotten remote store shelves from days past. So I settled on the smaller Speedboat.
This one isn't the greatest boat of all time, but I still like that it's civilian. It was also a time where design was still relatively simple compared to now, but rapidly modernizing.
For example, if you got this set from 2012 and onward the life jackets would be the neck-exposing second generation.
It also gives me double-nostalgia because it and the marina from 2011 remind me of modern takes on the Nautica subtheme of Town.

I showed my children a cassette tape with a Thomas story on it from my childhood last weekend. They had absolutely no idea what it was or how it worked. They didn't believe me when I said how we used to get films on even bigger ones.
I have twins so it's a good job I also have two copies of 4642
They'll know all about it when LEGO start making sets of VCRs and 'ghetto blasters'....
BTW...Marriage in 2003....I'd had my 15th Wedding Anniversary by then.....
:-0
@Robot99 @Maxbricks14 I'm 18. I was born in 2006. My first taste of LEGO was actually an old brick box my dad owned, but the pieces were limited so I never really got into any super creative LEGO building until I was 6-7ish

Gotcha, thanks! Checks out too.
My first Lego exposure was early on, because I had siblings 5/6 years my senior already playing with Legos. My early memories of Lego are thus pretty blurry, with memories of sets that weren't actually mine, but I remember the first set to catch my glance quite clearly - I remember being fascinated watching my older bros build 6736 .

I turned twenty-three that year. Finally, someone in this thread makes me feel (relatively) young!

Let's see... in 2006 I would have been 12. It was also a very up-and-down year: 9V was replaced by RC trains (BOO!), CITY was a year old, Bionicle Heroes videogame was released (Save the band!), Light up lightsabers and police flashlights were invented (BOO!), the BATMAN theme began, and LEGO in general was on the rebound from the dark days of the early 2000's.

Look, kid, just because I’m older than you doesn’t mean I can’t pass for younger than you.

In my head I'm in my mid 20s.

Look old man, go back to your mates 8683-3 and 8805-5 and hang out with them.
I got this set for Christmas in 2011. Crazy that I got this almost 13 years ago. This is one of my favorite Lego boats. Though it has a small amount of pieces, the end result is bigger than you would expect, and was well worth the price at the time. I might pull this one out and rebuild it!

Happy early birthday, fellow Octo-baby. Mine is the 13th. Friday the 13th. I know, it explains a lot, so I'm told.
60221 Diving Yacht was nice , and 60373 Fire Rescue Boat is still available (which I think is a better deal/parts pack compared to 60438 Sailboat unless you want a sail), so there's still plenty of opportunity.
Especially 60373 Fire Rescue Boat is useful as the hull comes in a grey/black colour, so could even be a police boat (709 Police Boat), ,or jaws boat with another build-up.
As for 4642 Fishing Boat , the colors really do match the boat build from 31052 Vacation Getaways
