Review: 42623 Beach Water Scooter

Posted by ,

After their experiences at adventure camp, the Friends are prepared to take on the the rest of the world now. One of the perennial settings we see for Friends sets is the beach (Heartlake must be pretty big), and one of this year's offerings is 42623 Beach Water Scooter.

Summary

42623 Beach Water Scooter, 84 pieces.
£8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99 | 10.7p/11.9c/11.9c per piece.

Another good pocket money set for the Friends line

  • Two minidolls
  • Two animals
  • None

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Inside the box there are three unnumbered bags, a dolphin piece, an 8x8 rounded plate, and a small instruction book. I'm happy to say there are no stickers in this set!

Minidolls and animals

It's a happy surprise that there are two minidolls in this set! Leo is here functioning as a lifeguard, which is clear from his shirt, as well as the whistle hanging around his neck. Candi is enjoying a day at the beach and is dressed for it in a halter top and shorts, though she'll probably get annoyed with sand getting into her shoes soon enough.

A dolphin completes the trio, with some very Friends-type markings on its melon.

The completed model

Candi and Leo are set for an active day on the beach with a pair of jet-skis! Lifevests are available, as they should be for water safety. A small buoy is included to help the Friends find their way.

Surveying the action from the beach is the lifeguard from an elevated chair. The chair level has everything a lifeguard needs - 50 SPF sunscreen, binoculars, and an umbrella. A life-preserver is close by.

At the base of the ladder leading to chair is a chest of ice pops. While Leo was off jet-skiing with Candi, one of the local crabs has managed to make off with one of the treats!

Someone came in to sub for Leo, but alas, the ice pop had already disappeared.

(Note: lifeguarding sloth not included in this set.)

Overall thoughts

At just $10, this is one of the smallest sets in the Friends line this year, and I always enjoy seeing what the designers pack into these small sets. This one doesn't disappoint with two minidolls, and a dolphin (do we count the crab as an animal? I think so). The jet skis offer lots of fun for racing around the beach (or adventure camp lake, for that matter).

This set is good for an impulse purchase, especially if you're looking for something to top off your cart for a GWP.

I think you clipped the umbrella to the wrong handle. Now it's getting in the way of the ladder.

These kids are too young for Jet skis, no wonder LEGO Friends has so many injured animals and the like, all the adults are irresponsible.

You are right! The pictures in the set description also show the umbrella clipped to the handle in the back.

I’m very surprised with the inclusion of Candi in a set with Leo, given that in the show, lego friends: the next chapter, Candi relentlessly bullies Leo, and later, after Leo stands up for himself, Candi essentially becomes obsessed with Leo, treating him as her new BFF, much to Leo’s annoyance. I wouldn’t be surprised if Candi forced Leo onto the jetskis with her.

I almost forgot that I have this set. Built it even (and dismantled it again). I must admit I only bought it because it was 40% off at Amazon and I wanted it for those Classic Space support stanchions in dark turquoise. I collect those in every colour. Maybe one day I'll build a Classic Space MOC in dark turquoise and some other colour. Black and white might be good candidates for supporting colours.

The sun was in the East when the photo was taken so the umbrella has been moved to provide shade for the sloth.

By in Netherlands,

I like it. Who doesn't love jetskis and beachfronts and dolphins?

But those colors. Are lime, teal and coral required colors for Friends sets or something?

Thus the need for various hospitals and clinics.
