Review: 76063 The Flash vs. Captain Cold

Posted by ,

76063 The Flash vs. Captain Cold immediately emerged as one of my favourite Mighty Micros sets when images were first revealed. The vehicles seem to better reflect the characters of their occupants than many of the other models in this range.

Furthermore, the two minifigures look fantastic on the packaging and both characters are among my favourites from the whole of the DC universe. Such high expectations can lead to disappointment but that is certainly not the case here!

Minifigures

All twelve Mighty Micros minifigures include short legs but some are further from the traditional designs of each character than others. The Flash features new printing on the head and torso but both are reasonably similar to the figure which has appeared in two sets before now and you could easily create a satisfactory Flash by replacing the short legs with longer ones.

76053 The Flash vs. Captain Cold

Captain Cold is one of The Flash's most eminent enemies and this version of the character, like the Scarlet Speedster, is not dissimilar to the standard minifigure which appeared in 76026 Gorilla Grodd Goes Bananas. His medium blue uniform looks splendid and I like the simplicity of the printing on his chest which is limited to a yellow belt and a frosty design around his neck. The head is printed with a pair of blue goggles and a grimace and this looks splendid.

76053 The Flash vs. Captain Cold

As ever, Captain Cold is armed with his cold gun and he also comes with an ice cream, which is a fun touch! The Flash, meanwhile, is equipped with a printed cylinder representing a can of 'Power Bolt' and this is topped with a rare 1x1 round tile which is decorated with a ring pull.

The Completed Model

Of the twelve Mighty Micros vehicles released so far, The Flash's racer is one of my clear favourites. The shaping is rather better than on many of the other cars and it is not only recognisable by its colour but also due to the subject matter, which is directly related to the powers of The Fastest Man Alive!

76053 The Flash vs. Captain Cold

The front wing features a 1x2 slope which is printed with The Flash's insignia and there is space for the hero to stand behind the steering wheel with plenty of arm clearance for holding accessories above the bodywork surrounding the cockpit. The spoiler at the rear has not appeared in red before and the jagged flame elements, which originate from NINJAGO, are fairly rare. They are used brilliantly here to represent the lightning of the speed force crackling off The Flash as he races around or perhaps to show flaming exhausts.

76053 The Flash vs. Captain Cold

Captain Cold's snow plough looks less appropriate for high speeds but is perfect for the character, with a lovely colour scheme and an enjoyable, but short, build. I do not like the use of different wheel sizes on most of these little models but the snow plough is ideal for such treatment and I think it looks splendid.

76053 The Flash vs. Captain Cold

A flame yellowish orange snowboard is cleverly used at the front to represent the plough and I think it looks great, forming an attractive shape and reflecting the colour scheme of Captain Cold's icy attire. The smoke stack and tow bar are also nice additions and, as usual, there is space for the villain to control the vehicle from the back.

Overall

This is easily the better of the two Mighty Micros sets I have reviewed so far and I find it difficult to imagine any others surpassing it. The minifigures are both excellent and the vehicles are superb as well, reflecting the personae of their respective occupants as well as their abilities.

76053 The Flash vs. Captain Cold

I certainly recommend this set if you are looking to purchase a Mighty Micro in order to test out the range as a whole. You will not be disappointed.

Keep an eye out for an exciting Super Heroes announcement tomorrow and stay tuned for more coverage of the new sets here on Brickset!

This might be my favorite of the whole line. I love that little snowplow, the small details are terrific, and if I pick this one up, it'll provide me with a shortcut to a Flash minifig (replace legs with standard height, switch head to something less cartoonish).

^Why does Spider-Man need a helicopter?

This is the Mighty Micros set I want. The white eyes and pattern makes it Wally West, and I do like that snow plough.

Cute little set, and great assortment of parts. The snowplow is very creative. Gotta add a Flash to grow my JLA group.

I loved this idea, more fun and a cheaper way of getting some DC Hero mini-figures, even if they don't have full size legs!

I will just keep an eye out for an exciting Super Heroes announcement tomorrow. I mean... today?

I've got a Flash, but I don't much like him... this one's better. Makes a good Kid Flash. :P

And I love the snowplow, it fits his (Captain Cold's) personality so well.

This looks like the best set of the Mighty Micros line. I want it! After all, I don't have a Flash, and this Flash looks easy to edit! Great pieces, too! Lightning swords, snowboard, printed Flash symbol. These are way better deals than Microfighters, though they're the same concept. I mean, twice the amount of characters and vehicles! For the same price! I think they should make microfighters have 2 vehicles and 2 minifigs, even if they are smaller.

This is my favorite of the six. The printed pieces are great and so is the little plow. :)

And I get a laugh every time someone complains that a SUPER HERO is cartoonish. Yes they are! They are cartoons!

I'm not familiar with the characters, but this set seems really well designed, and like it would appeal a lot to kids as well as adults. I wish they'd thought out all the vehicles this well in relation to the characters!

@Reventon, it is very ironic that the fastest man alive needs a car, perhaps he's tired :P

Good review Capn, I'm kicking myself for getting 76026, as this is a much cheaper way of getting the Flash and Captain Cold.

Some of the sets are neat, but I am surprised at how many people are buying these as a cheaper alternative for the figures considering how different these are than the other releases. I'd much rather have a more accurate portrayal in a better set. But this isn't aimed at me I'm suspecting.

I really want to get a Mighty Micros set, I just have no idea which one to get. They all look so fun!

Does anyone know of a good leg swap for both of these guys? I'm sure if I look I can find a good bright red legs, but Cpt Cold's ice blue I can't recall legs matching that color.

@PistolDanger All the Homer Simpson minifigures have the same legs as Captain Cold. Marty McFly too. They're also in a couple of Speed Champions sets.
