75821 Piggy Car Escape is the smallest of the six LEGO The Angry Birds Movie sets, containing 74 pieces and priced at £11.99 or $12.99.

Angry Birds is not something I would typically associate with LEGO and I was therefore rather dubious when the theme was announced last year. However, early images of the sets caught my attention and I rushed down to purchase a few from the LEGO Store yesterday so I can take a closer look at this unique range.

Minifigures

Chuck is one of the most important characters in the movie and only appears in this set, so is a significant draw if you are looking to collect the protagonists. The unusual nature of these Angry Birds figures has divided opinion but I quite like them. Chuck consists of just one piece but is articulated at the shoulders. His hands can grip standard accessories and are very similar in shape to that of the Rock Monsters from Power Miners.

I very much like the feathered details moulded onto his arms and the black plumage looks great as well. This is made from a rubbery material which is set into the plastic to avoid breakage, as is the bright orange beak. It is worth noting that the line running down the centre of the figure is more pronounced in the photo than in reality, although it would ideally have been hidden in some way. This new kind of minifigure will certainly take some getting used to but I am very satisifed with its design on the whole.

The Piggy is equally strange, combining traditional minifigure arms with a brand new piece to represent the head and legs. I love the exaggerated expression on his face and the shaping of the body looks very close to the animation model which has been seen in the trailers, even featuring a little curly tail and ears at the back!

It is pleasing that the Piggies which appear in every one of the Angry Birds sets feature different printed designs so you can create a small army of ten distinct Piggies by collecting all six sets!

The Completed Model

The Piggy car is not a particularly impressive model in terms of appearance but it authentically replicates the ramshackle design seen throughout the structures and vehicles belonging to the Piggies. I do not know whether this vehicle will appear in the final film but I hope so as it would be interesting to see it in action. The entire car has a very slight forward rake and features a nice combination of industrial colours such as reddish brown and light bluish grey.

I like the oversized air intake found at the front and find the ungainliness which this suggests quite charming. A flick-fire missile is mounted on top while a light bluish grey egg is used to represent the miniature inlet cone. This potentially useful piece does not appear in any other sets in this colour, further increasing the appeal of 75821.

The cockpit is quite well protected and features a fuel gauge as well as a steering wheel for the Piggy to drive the car. Two eggs are stored in a nest just behind this and a pink flags hangs from the back which can be angled as you like. The twin exhausts at the rear look splendid, particularly on the left as this is linked to a rubber hose which simulates a link between the exhaust and the engine.

Overall

This was one of the Angry Birds sets I was least excited about but I am quite satisfied with the final model and the figures are also a pleasant surprise. I think the cobbled together appearance of the car works very nicely and it also offers considerable play value as the durability of the vehicle has not been compromised by the reasonable level of detail.

75821 Piggy Car Escape

I think this is an ideal set if you are seeking a relatively inexpensive entry point for the Angry Birds theme and I do recommend the set, although the price point of £11.99 or $12.99 is a little higher than I would like.

Chuck looks awesome! Will definitely being getting a set or two just for a few figures mainly! I would love to see a review of Bird Island Egg Heist if possible! Thanks again for the review!

People will still hate this theme, no matter how good the sets are. I think it looks good, however!

I had a look at this set in my local store today and whilst the packaging and figures are eye catching, the price feels high for what is ultimately a fairly insubstantial looking set. Given the lower price of the mighty minis and the greater playability these offer I'll probably go for those over the angry birds.

Still not sold, I don't think it's the LEGO sets themselves, but the way the movie depicts the birds and pigs (Arms and legs).

Not really a fan of this theme, so I won't comment on the nature of this set as I'm not the target market. The specialized pieces look very nice though, and everything about the set looks smooth. I wonder how big the eggs look compared to the ones found in the new Elves dragon sets.

Thank you for the review! Not really a fan of this set, but the line on the whole is pretty cool, I'm looking forward to the pirate ship review :)

Good review! I like the ramshackle look of the pig vehicles and buildings. It fits very well with the games the movie is based on.

And to anyone who seriously believes nobody cares about Angry Birds anymore: just last month I was going for a walk in the park near my house, and on the playground I saw a bunch of kids running around with Angry Birds plushies. I also routinely see Angry Birds merchandise for sale, and clearly someone's buying it.

Anyway, love the new egg piece! That will be useful for a lot of themes in the future!

I really like the look of the Angry Birds sets and will be going for some when double VIP points start next week.

Thanks for the review. It's a wonder you're able to keep up at the moment!

Wow that line in the middle of his body is a huge draw back. I only plan on getting the Pig City Takedown, that set is amazing.

The only thing i care about this set is Chuck.

I don't get why these sets are being so despised. They do what they are supposed to do, and do it well. The characters look like they are supposed to, being based off their movie counterparts, the sets fit the tone well along with plenty of parts to be useful outside of Angry Birds, and let's face it the prices of pretty much all LEGO nowadays is going to be pretty costly.

I like the look of the car. Not as a whole, but it's a nifty design scheme.

Review the pirate ship soon please!

when i first heard that an angry birds movie was being made, i was kind of annoyed. then lego decided to make sets for the movie. im actually pleased with this set, and i like the design of the birds and pigs. i hope lego will add lots of exclusive pieces to future sets

Especially because of the giant engine, it really looks like a Juniors set to me, which I wouldn't be surprised if that's kind of the point. For what it is, the main character figure looks well made, but that does little to redeem how awful this line is.

@Lego_Fox It's the fact that the line exists at all that is objectionable. Even an Angry Birds movie is just so pathetic and the cynical commercialism is off putting. There was a time when things like "Coupon: The Movie" were jokes about the excesses of marketing and the willingness of consumers to consume without any ethical compass. Sadly, Angry Birds the Movie is no joke and these days I'm sure it will do very well.

Lego agreeing to produce flops like the Lone Ranger to secure Marvel is one thing. Angry Birds just for the money is pathetic.

By in Singapore,

Thanks for this great review! Loved every part of it. Pleasantly surprised that the cockpit is more detailed than I expected it to be (with a dial and all). Also love the rear exhaust. And of course, the egg piece is certainly useful. I still believe that this theme is worth appreciating and collecting, as it offers a unique and refreshing wave of sets.

@CapnRex101 I believe that we would most certainly see this in action in the movie, as in the second trailer when you freeze the frame at the scene where the pigs are throwing eggs at each other, there seems to be headlights in the background parked on the beach. It looks almost exactly like this set here, or the bike included in the other set.

By in Australia,

For those who have played Bad Piggies (Rovio's game where you play as the pig's, building ramshackle solutions to get through levels), the design of this fits the aesthetic of the pig's building style, and there is a good symmetry between this game and lego sets. Both can be built in different ways to see what works.

That is not worth $12. It's some stupid looking figures and a random car that looks like a 6 year old threw it together. Not impressed at all.

However I'm grateful we finally get egg pieces.

I can't wait to get this set! Looks like a nice starter one.

Please also review Bird Island Egg Heist, as I'm planning on picking that one up as well.

Whilst this wasn't a theme I was begging Lego to run with... They've done a good job on bringing the right style into the models. some interesting new parts and the figs look great.

My son has a k-nex angry birds set from a few years back and it's just utter rubbish. Pieces don't fit properly and no clutch. Breathe on it and it falls over.

Whilst a catapult mechanism would have been more appropriate, I can see why they did what they did. It's great to see Lego promoting all kinds of different building styles (modulars/city, nexo, the lego movie and now angry birds).

Not for me, but I think these are pretty good sets. A celebration of "outside the box" building!

Super detailed car!I'll sure buy it even if I am not a big fan of Angry birds.

@DanSRL Now hold on right there, LEGO is still a business looking to make money. There is nothing wrong with at least trying to make these sets. Either way, The Lone Ranger sets were actually pretty good Wild West sets if you take them apart from the license, and these sets are actually not that bad. This company picks up licenses left and right! Disney, SpongeBob, Minecraft, Star Wars, Speed Racer, Jurassic World, and The Wizard of Oz just to name a few!
The sets of Angry Birds are still good quality also. You get decent parts, figures that perfectly represent the film versions, they couldn't have done it better.

Thanks for the review. Unfortunately for me, the only interest in it would be the egg elements (which look great) - everything else is pretty horrible and looking at the pieces vs cost you are paying for two figs with little alternate use and a handful of standard bits. Not for me I am afraid.

I may take a dive in this theme.

I'm not super excited about the angry birds theme, but I might just pick this one up for the parts and minifigs :)

@Lego_Fox
Ok, so you clearly don't understand the ethical argument at all. At least I tried.

Not impressed by the car; the parts included are impressive, though, especially the bley egg.

Completely out of curiosity...all the pictures are taken from the car's left side...is there a reason for this?
