Review: 76058 Spider-Man: Ghost Rider Team-Up
Posted by CapnRex101,76058 Spider-Man: Ghost Rider Team-Up is the smallest of the three Marvel Super Heroes sets being released this summer and also one of the most anticipated as it contains two new characters, including Ghost Rider himself.
Many fans have been eager to see this popular character in minifigure form and I suspect they will not be disappointed! However, there is more to this set than just a single minifigure as Ghost Rider is never without his famous motorcycle and Hobgoblin also makes his first appearance so there is a lot to like in a set costing just £19.99 or $19.99.
Minifigures
Ghost Rider is easily the most significant draw to this set and he looks brilliant. I like the printing on the front and back of his torso very much as it reveals some of the flames through his leather jacket and the chains which cross his chest are an excellent recreation of his appearance in the comics. Unfortunately the legs are not printed which looks rather bland.
My favourite aspect of the minifigure is definitely the head, which is absolutely spectacular. Strangely, the head and flame element are combined which is odd as the flame is also used in 76057 Spider-Man: Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle but in conjunction with a different head. Perhaps the smaller flames surrounding the head would have been rather fragile if the two pieces were separate and it is therefore not removable in either set. As one would expect, Ghost Rider is armed with a trans-orange chain.
Spider-Man is in need of an update in my opinion but this version which has been in use since 2012 is still serviceable. The printing on the head and torso looks splendid and I like the balance between the red and blue of his outfit.
However, printed legs and arms would be welcome as this minifigure is dull in comparison with more modern characters. I look forward to seeing how the Spider-Man minifigure included in 76067 Tanker Truck Takedown will look up close.
One of the most interesting additions to the Marvel Super Heroes range this year is Spider-Man's web element which can be fitted into a minifigure's hand. It looks splendid and includes several attachment points so is very versatile, as is the new piece used to fit the web into the hand of a minifigure. This piece consists of a stud with a hole in it on one side and a short bar on the other, so fits into the family started last year by the 1x1 round plate with vertical shaft.
Hobgoblin is not a character I was expecting to see in a LEGO set as he is not enormously well known in relation to other Marvel villains who have yet to appear as a minifigure. Nevertheless, I am pleased with the figure and the bright colours used on his outfit help to differentiate Hobgoblin from his fellow felons, although flame yellowish orange might have been a more appropriate colour for his torso, cape and hood depending on which version of the character you look at in the comics.
Regardless, the combination of orange and dark blue is very striking and the reddish brown belt on the front and back is a nice touch too. His head is printed on both sides with suitably crazed expressions and I love the huge red eyes which glare from beneath his hood, particularly since they are different sizes on one side which looks very menacing.
A flaming pumpkin bomb is included so Hobgoblin can create some mayhem. This version has been seen a couple of times before and I much prefer the new design seen in 76057 Spider-Man: Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle with the Green Goblin, although this one is nice too.
The Completed Model
This set consists of three models, the smallest of which is Hobgoblin's purple glider. The colour scheme looks good and I like the angled wings as well as the decent attempt which has been made to recreate the bat styling adorning the front of the craft, although the flick fire missiles located beneath the wings leave the model looking rather bulky.
There is plenty of room for Hobgoblin to stand on top and I think he looks best when angled forward slightly as though he is hunched over. This is certainly a good effort but there is room for improvement and I favour the glider included for Green Goblin in 76057 Spider-Man: Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle.
A small section of pavement is included too. This is reminiscent of 79118 Karai Bike Escape from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme as both sets feature New York street signs and newspaper racks. Each rack is decorated with a sticker showing the front pages of the Daily Bugle and Front Line, both of which are fictional newspapers from Marvel Comics.
You can open each one to reveal bundled newspapers inside. These are represented by stickers on 1x2 tiles and each one corresponds with the front page shown on the side of the racks. A bin, containing a bright green stalk and , is also included alongside a traffic light which faces in two directions as well as some street signs, also formed using stickers.
I should mention that the spelling of Bleecker Street is incorrect which is disappointing. Hopefully this will be corrected in future production runs. Furthermore, Bleecker Street and Second Avenue do not share a junction in reality so this is not at all reflective of the true geography of Manhattan but both streets include famous Marvel Comics locations so I appreciate the Easter Eggs. However, these pale in comparison with those in 76057 Spider-Man: Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle and I am eager to explore those further in that review!
Ghost Rider's Hell Cycle is very well known and it was therefore important that the designer got this aspect of the set right. Thankfully I think the model is almost perfect, with a gorgeous profile from the sides and plenty of flame details which are faithful to the source material. The size of the motorcycle is slightly off-putting but the level of detail has been increased in accordance with the size, making this a worthy trade-off in my opinion.
The front of the Hell Cycle is cleverly assembled using some hinges and a shield tile which looks marvellous. This entire module is then attached to the rest of the motorcycle using another hinge, forming a beautiful area of angular bodywork. I like the flames mounted just in front of this section but the red Technic pieces to which they are attached look a little out of place. Presumably it would not have been possible to cast these in trans-red or trans-orange which would have looked much better.
The flames at the back suffer from a similar issue but otherwise I think it looks fantastic from every angle. The seat is easily large enough for Ghost Rider to take his position and I really like the different wheels which have been used at the front and back as these lend a sense of speed to the motorcycle.
Overall
The Super Heroes range has been dominated by sets of this size for several years and they only seem to be improving. Not only are the two new minifigures brilliant but the Hell Cycle and Hobgoblin's glider are also attractive while the pavement section provides a nice backdrop for the action.
However, the highlight of the set is certainly Ghost Rider. This minifigure is everything that I had hoped for and that alone justifies purchase of the set for me, so I certainly recommend it if you are a Marvel fan and it includes some useful stickers for City collectors as well.

Nice review! Been waiting for a Ghost Rider, and to be honest did not expect one. I think this set will be on par with the rarity of the Deadpool figure (and perhaps Ant-Man) once this sets retires as well so if you want a Ghost rider, this is the set you will need to buy.
The bike, I think, is not great, but likely the best that can be done with LEGO at this point, save making a complete new molding for the Cycle frame and body to work with the flame pieces, but I do not expect LEGO to do that all for one set.
GR himself, wondering if they still could have done a better mold for his head.. maybe some hair piece that also covered his face (or sides of his face more) with some flames, but again probably the best LEGO can do with the molds they have. Overall, I'm glad for the hobgoblin and Ghost Rider figures (The chain is a nice touch too)
@chris_bham june 1st
I usually skip SH sets completely but this one looks pretty good, I'm especially loving the trans hairpiece. Thanks for the review, made me take a look at something I usually wouldn't give a second glance.
@ aleydita you can't take it off from the head so as you i wouldn't buy the set for that
I picked up a good chunk of the June 1st sets the other day as my local shop in Leeds got them out early and I can honestly say this set put a serious smile on my face that its hard to shift. If anything, it makes a phenomenal companion to the bridge battle as that comes with Green Goblin and his glider. I've currently got both sets dominating my desk. I do agree about the spidey minifig needing an update, or at the very least, some variants. Having bought the venom polybag set, the bridge and ghost rider I now have 3 (this week!) on top of the ones I already owned.... seriously, enough. He's turning into Bumblebee in Transformers, too many! seriously! Im iffy on the octo mech, but of 3 spidey cartoon related sets I honestly think they have smashed it out of the park.
Is it me, or is Bleecker Street misspelt on that sign?
It is misspelled ha. Looks like a great set but the Spider-man minifig definitely needs to be updated.
^^ So it is! It's the DeLorean "sheild" situation all over again!
^ They had a good thing going with the Spidey with printed boots in last year's Sandman set. I still don't know why they reverted back to the original legs.
Anyway, this set is great and I think your review just convinced me to get it alongside the Bridge Battle; and I'm not even much of a Spidey fan, as I've mentioned! This is going to be an expensive rest of the year...
That lack of "c" annoys me more than it should. This set is great however and I will most definitely get it sooner or later.
This confirms what we already knew about this set: IT IS AWESOME. The one thing I would change is that the bits holding the fire wing pieces on should be black, not red... but hey, that's easily fixable.
I am looking forward to getting my hands on this set, I really want the Hobgoblin and Ghost Rider minifigures as well as the new Spiderman!
Like I keep said with the Disney Minifigs, they've released Syndrome, and now Ghost Rider. How much longer until Firestorm comes out?!? The flaming hair is here! Anyway, this set looks really cool.
That piece Spidey uses to grip the web in green would make a good green latern power ring
Thanks for the review!
Great review! When is this set out in the States?
A bit disappointed by Ghost Rider's single piece skull head and flaming hairpiece. Those should have been separate parts. I might try a skeleton's head and Flama's corona. Also, I think I will replace GR's arms and legs with the CMF S12 Rock Star's.
I would have preferred more printed parts and fewer stickers, but I realise that may not have been possible for a £20 set.
Despite my misgivings, I really like this set. It contains three of my favourite Marvel characters, a suitably menacing GR bike, a new web piece and just the right amount of street furniture. Could this be the best set of 2016?
I was already convinced by this set.
I'm looking forward to buying it as soon as possible.
The only thing is the price which seems to be higher in France than in Germany on the Lego shop.
I think they should have made the blue on Hobgoblin a bit brighter.
^ It's hardly surprising that a set that invokes violence made it through the review process (all the superhero sets do that these days. I mean, geez, has anybody read any recent Joker stories? My gosh) ... but are they actually calling Ghost Rider's set a "Hell cycle"? Wow.
I do agree that it is a surprise that Ghost Rider made it into a Lego set, though. I mean, he's kind of a hardcore hero with very adult themes and symbolism. I would've thought that a Ghost Rider set would be about as likely as a Punisher set, and well, here we are ... I'm still gonna buy it though. Ghost Rider!
^^ You think this one invokes violence, you should see 76055-1: Batman: Killer Croc Sewer Smash, it has Red Hood in the set, a anti-superhero that kills people with guns, then you have Katana which is gonna be in the new "Suicide Squad" Movie.
All I can say is that when it makes that bank money, you keep doing it.
Well, what can I say. I was raised on Lego and... on Roger Stern's Spider-Man. 'Nuff said.
Hobgoblin's glider is definitely to be improved but it doesn't really matter. Two such long-awaited figures in one small set... I think I'll buy multiples just to give them away to friends on any occasion.
^ Agree about the glider being too bulky. I'm going to use the same MOC design I used for Green Goblin's glider: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/AmperZand/Fantasy/green_goblin_off_glider.jpg
Woohoo, yet another oversized bleh-cycle....
The highlight minifigure for me would actually be the Hobgoblin, because I have always had a strong connection to the 90's Spider-Man tv show. I also have far less knowledge on Ghost Rider and have also made my own customized minifigure of the character and his motorcycle, which is actually far smaller and far far far more accurate in detail.
Great review. I'll buy this when I see it. Hobgoblin's head would also be good for the DC Comics character Etrigan.
The Super Heroes sets in this price-range have been consistently great, i hope they keep up this level of excellence for ever :-)
Have a custom hobgoblin already and no love for ghost rider, but I do like the little street corner. Though GR's hair isn't removable, I think that piece is on flaming pumpkins in the bridge set - would make a nice firestorm
A couple of trivial points for those in the know:
Hobgoblin's second face, grinning with different sized eyes, is directly taken from his earliest appearances as drawn by John Romita Jr. and Ron Frenz. Brilliant work.
The actual set is, I believe, inspired by a scene in the (adjective-less) Spider-Man series that Todd McFarlane "wrote" and "drew" (note the sarcastic quotes). Not a great story, but nevertheless has inspired a must have set.
Want this badly! We've been in need of Ghost Rider and Hobgoblin for a good long while!
Booo to head + flames combo. I was hoping to add the flame piece to my 40k MOC.
Bought this set yesterday. Can't wait to build it!
Absolutely AWESOME set! Can't wait to get hold of it! :-)
Perhaps they figured that it would be cheaper in the longrun to make the head one piece entirely instead of two separate ones?
I'm most excited for the Hobgoblin in this set. My Spider-man growing up was form the 90s cartoon and Hobgoblin was more prominent in that than I remembering Green Goblin being.
I want that so bad
I don't suppose the head is GitD? That would be too cool.
It's been a while since I really followed GR, so I wonder which version this is supposed to be-
The bike is interesting, but the chopper style is more reminiscent of Vengeance (the 90s 'darker and edgier' Ghost Rider knockoff), it really needs 'flaming' wheels, but I suppose it'd be tough to do the rubber in yellow or bright flame orange (though I recall some brightish rubber pieces in my older sets...) For original Johnny Blaze, it'd probably just be a regular motorcycle, but with flaming (trans orange?) wheels, the standard LEGO bike fairing would probably be passable as Dan Ketch's bike- again with 'flaming' wheels...
reminds me of last years Ninjago Ghost Bust- err, Hunters...
That Ghost rider looks frickin' crazy awesome!!!
I would have thought it would have been too scary for children, but then again some of the Nexo Knight figures are quite scary too :)
Like most everyone else, I will probably buy this, if I do, for mini-figures only! All three are fantastic
Cool, I want! June 1st release date? Awesome, I was going to make an order anyway to get the early June free gift, park fountain. :D
It's about time they made a Hobgoblin, and Ghost Rider is very nicely done. the details of the set are great. Though I really don't need another Spider Man figure.
so i'm guessing this set didn't come out June 1? :(
I think so too, I wonder what the real US release date is suppose to be.
I don't know what up with Lego. com but they just don't seem to have it, not even a listing. I think I'll check the retail stores instead.
Picked this set up today. The dual moulded head is, IMO, one of the stand out parts of the set, contrary to one of the comments earlier.
I'm not really a collector of the Marvel stuff, but, £20 for this set is a bargain compared to some in a the same price range.
To me Ghost Rider's bike looks kinda like the one from the Lego Marvel Superheros game
\ ( ._ .)/
BEST marvel set ever I mean can you name one thing wrong with it? plus we got a ghost rider can't wait!!!
