Review: 41587 Robin

The LEGO Batman Movie is packed with comical depictions of familiar characters and the first wave of BrickHeadz sets includes four figures based on the film. 41587 Robin stands out among the heroes as a result of his prominent glasses, striking hair style and flamboyant attire so I have been eager to take a closer look at the model. I think the Robin minifigure is one of the best in The LEGO Batman Movie range and hope to be similarly impressed by this set.

The Completed Model

Each BrickHeadz character comes complete with a black display stand which is adorned with the BrickHeadz logo and the series number. The figure stands towards the back of the base and Robin's cape weighs him down a little, although not nearly to the same extent as the hair in 41588 The Joker and he is therefore balanced fairly well.

Robin's reddish brown hair is constructed using a combination of plates, tiles and curved slopes to create an organic shape which resembles the hair piece seen on the minifigure. I like the asymmetrical design and the thick glasses are integrated very effectively using a 1x1 black tile on either side to represent the temples. The LEGO Batman Movie Essential Guide reveals that Robin wears a large pair of glasses to exaggerate the size of his eyes and I think the thickness of the life rings is quite effective in this regard.

However, the bridge looks rather odd as the 1x2 tile is very prominent and it is particularly unsightly when viewed from the side. Nevertheless, I think this is about the best which could have been done based on the parts which are currently available and the printed eyes slot into the centre of each life ring very nicely. A green 1x4 plate is hidden behind the glasses, giving the impression of the green tint seen in the film.

The red, yellow and green costume looks great and I like the printed design on the chest as well as the green clips which form the hands. Robin's hair style is very neat when viewed from the rear and he wears a bright yellow cape which appears to hang quite naturally thanks to the 2x2 curved slopes used at the top. 41585 Batman and 41586 Batgirl wear similar capes but this one features a straight edge while the others are both crenelated.

The distinctive colour schemes of Batman and Robin ensure that the two figures look splendid together. 41587 Robin is the more detailed of the two figures and I think the bright colours of his attire are very well suited to the BrickHeadz range. On the other hand, it is difficult to ignore the exceptional appeal of 41585 Batman so I expect that set will prove to be the more popular of them.

Overall

I was a little disappointed when 41587 Robin was revealed in January as I thought his glasses looked rather awkward in official images. In person, however, they are much more impressive and I am quite pleased with this figure on the whole as its bright colour scheme is very distinctive and it looks tremendous on display, particularly beside 41585 Batman.

If you are a collector of sets based on The LEGO Batman Movie then I would recommend this model but it does not match the quality of 41588 The Joker, 41591 Black Widow or 41595 Belle in my opinion so you might wish to focus on those first.

Great review!
Honestly, I don't see what all the fuss is about the glasses. I always thought they were the highlight of the set

You never showed the left side of him

By in Canada,

I feel they should've printed the eyes on two 1x1 round tiles in transparent green which would show the tint better

Nevertheless it's still a great set!

Actually they're tan...

By in United States,

Why not a black plate underneath the ring pieces for the glasses, for all those who dislike the design?

By in United Kingdom,

These brickheadz look so much better in the 'flesh' than from the pictures.
