Review: 41585 Batman

A month has passed since the BrickHeadz became available and 41585 Batman appears to be the most popular of the twelve sets released so far. This is unsurprising given the sustained popularity of both the Dark Knight and The LEGO Batman Movie, although I do not believe it to be the best figure in the range.

Nevertheless, this set offers a couple of delightful surprises and is a vital addition to one's BrickHeadz collection based purely on the identity of its subject matter.

The Completed Model

A black display base is included, as with every BrickHeadz set. It is decorated with the BrickHeadz logo and the series number, leading me to wonder which characters we might see in future series. More Super Heroes characters are surely inevitable and I would love to see a few Star Wars figures at some point.

Batman is unusual in that he does not feature the standard BrickHeadz eyes and therefore looks rather lifeless to me, although the white eyes match his appearance in the film. I was delighted to find that they glow in the dark as the design suits the Caped Crusader perfectly and it is worth noting that these 1x1 round tiles have only appeared in this colour once before so are very rare.

The shaping of the cowl is splendid, with curved ears matching the design of the minifigure and a raised area on either side which lines up with the arms. Batman's famous symbol is printed on the torso and he wears a yellow belt which is printed with four pouches and a buckle to replicate the new utility belt element introduced with The LEGO Batman Movie. This component is exclusive which is surprising given that it could also have been used to good effect on 41586 Batgirl.

Batman's cape features a crenelated edge and two 2x3 tiles create a smooth surface at the back, matching the tiled surface on the back of the head. 41586 Batgirl wears an identical cape, although hers is yellow to match the bright colour scheme of her purple suit.

A black batarang completes the figure. Its monochromatic design is not particularly conducive to an impressive display piece but it looks marvelous alongside some of the more eye-catching characters, presenting an attractive contrast with his fellow heroes from The LEGO Batman Movie as well as 41588 The Joker.

Overall

The best BrickHeadz sets are often the most brightly coloured or unusual and this figure was not therefore among those I was most excited about. However, it has proven to be a pleasant surprise as the simple designs of the cowl and belt are very effective, as are the glowing eyes!

This is our final BrickHeadz review for the moment so I can finally decide upon my absolute favourite. 41587 Robin, 41591 Black Widow, 41594 Captain Armando Salazar and 41595 Belle are truly excellent but 41588 The Joker is the best of all in my opinion, with a striking colour scheme, brilliant detail and plenty of rare or exclusive parts. Nevertheless, 41585 Batman is certainly a worthy purchase in my opinion, especially when displayed beside other characters from the film.

By in United States,

This is honestly my least favorite brick head. I still like it though.

Capn, I thought you had already reviewed this set. Thanks for the review, as always. I thought Salazar and the Joker were your favorites.

By in United Kingdom,

Just built this one with my little boy yesterday. He loves it!

That's three built for us now (Joker, Batman and Beast). With five others bought (Captain America, Batgirl, Belle, Iron Man, Hulk) one awaiting delivering (Black Widow) and three more to get (Robin, Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Salazar).

Then it's over to hoping for a series 2 to be released.

By in Sweden,

The grey bricks shining through on the head completely ruins this one for me. It's probably less obvious in a "normal" non-photographed setting, but why not just use a black variant of that brick? Cheap.

"I'm Batman" anyway, nice review as always and keep up the good work.

It is your website but these brickhead reviews are getting.... deja-vu...

By in United Kingdom,

This is definitely the first time we have reviewed the set, although the BrickHeadz sets are somewhat repetitive so you could be forgiven for thinking we have covered it already!

I think we will pair up the sets for future reviews.

By in Switzerland,

The fact that people are already forgetting if a specific brickhead is reviewed or not is a good indication of how very soon this whole product line will get boring for most. I might be wrong, I guess people like me who were against it from the beginning are not going to be convinced anyway, and the ones who like it will keep buying them no matter what, but a basic design with very minimal variety in the builds can be sold only so many times before it gets really old.

The eyes that glow are awesome, I'll have to get a few for 25 cents each.
