Review: 30449 The Milano
Posted by Huw,The Milano is the main spacecraft used by the Guardians of the Galaxy for interstellar flights and has been officially rendered in LEGO three times, including a mini polybag version, 30449 The Milano.
It's currently available at Toys R Us in the UK for £4.99 or is free with LEGO Super Heroes purchases over £15, which is a low threshold for such a cool freebie.
We'll be reviewing this year's main rendition of the craft, in 76081 The Milano vs. The Abilisk next week, but in the meantime I've taken a few pictures of the the mini one for your perusal.
The set contains 64 pieces which is a good number for a polybag, probably because there's no minifig included.
Parts-wise it incudes a couple of rarities: 6055629 (Beam 1M With 3 Balls Ø5,9, design: 15460, colour: Dark Stone Grey), used for the wingtips, and the cockpit piece, 6100761 (Front, 2X2, Sport, Tr., design: 47904, colour: Transparent) which has appeared in just 6 sets and is normally seen in transparent brown.
All the main features of the ship are present and correct: the sleek pointed nose, multi-faceted wingtips, distinctive 'V' shape and the rear engines/repulsers
The engines/repulsers at the back can be positioned straight or angled downwards although I'm unsure whether that is the case with the 'real' craft.
A NEXO Knights shield has been put to good use on the back of the fuselage. I don't know what the light blue dot on the wing signifies but it's present on the 'real' craft as some sort of painted marking.
The Milano is an interesting looking ship and the designers have done well to replicate it at such a small scale.
The only improvement I would like to have seen is to replace the orange 2x2 'L' plates at the front with the new 14719 Flat Tile Corner 1X2X2, but it's not been produced in orange yet.
It's a neat polybag, one of the year's best, so head on over to Toys R Us to grab one for yourself.
(Before you ask, no, the transparent stand does not come with it!)

You know what we need? Smooth angled tiles. Otherwise, what a fine little set that is!
This is the same free polybag that will be given out at Lego stores with a >£50 purchase AND a 2016 Calendar voucher in May!! Great deal from Toys R Us, not such a good deal from Lego themselves!
They are also currently for sale in the 'Big Shop' at Legoland Windsor, for £3
(They always have polybags in the queing system, for those last minute impulse purchases and had two big bins full of these last weekend)
"the cockpit piece, 6100761 (Front, 2X2, Sport, Tr., design: 47904, colour: Transparent) which has appeared in just 6 sets and is normally seen in transparent brown." Correct me if I am wrong, but this piece has most commonly been seen in transparent black, not brown.
Otherwise, great review!
@DragonLord56 I think Huw is using the Lego name for the colour of this element (https://brickset.com/parts/colour-Transparent-Brown, https://brickset.com/parts/4217722/front-2x2-sport-tr) rather than the BrickLink name (https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=P&v=1&colorPart=13).
^ Yes, thank you.
It looks quite cool for a small set, that last marvel polybag I got which I loved was super jumper Spiderman and the spider tech bot with missile launchers.
The "real" Milano has only one main truster, as far as I know.
Regardless this minor inexactitude it seems a great model from a great spaceship.
Nice little model. Good parts to make a Star Lord Mighty Micros.
I love the technique this set uses for the wingtips!
Great model. Can't wait to get it next month when it shows up in LEGO Stores. The large winglets give it a bit of a "chibi" appearance.
Mock me if you will, but I love this polybag, if only for one reason: It gives me a 'baby' Milano. With the GotG V1 Milano, the new Milano for V2, and this, I have a papa, mama, and baby Milano. It joins rather rarified company in my collection having the three different size sets like this, most of the rest of which are in the form of various Star Wars ships, with the 'mama' portion filled by a micro-fighter.
@paulmison, thank you for pointing this out! Learning something new every day!
A lovely ship, hope it becomes more widespread later on.
I'm thinking of trying to recolor this a bit to match the first version once I get my copy.
I hope this is released in Toys R Us US soon, $5.99 would be good but I'd hope for $4.99.
^ - It is in the May 2017 LEGO Store Calendar as a FREE giveaway with a minimum $35 purchase between May 8-21 (2 weeks) in Canada and the USA.
Acquired one of these yesterday at Toys R Us Nottingham. As reported you get it free with a £15 Marvel Super Heroes spend so I bought the cheapest one I could: 76079 Ravager Attack.
Additionally you received a £10 LEGO gift card when spending £40 or more on LEGO - an offer which has been running for a few weeks now but ends this week, AND £10 off a £50 spend for Gold card members, so I went for 21306 Yellow Submarine at £47.49 which is pretty much the same as other high street retailers at the minute but cheaper than the LEGO store price of £54.99.
So not a bad day all in all.
That's about the ugliest pile of LEGO I've ever seen.
I can't be the only one that thought this was for Kexo Knights, when I first saw this.
@Fizyx - the Quinjet is another Marvel vehicle with numerous iterations in various sizes: there is the original daddy set from the first Avengers movie, the slightly smaller one from Age of Ultron (could be the mummy?) a third, even smaller one from civil war (teenager) and two baby ones (polybags from original Avengers and then Age of Ultron). Finally, there are 2 micro builds (slightly smaller than the polybags) included in the Helicarrier set. It's all here:
