Review: 42073 BASH!
Posted by iso3200,Following on from my 42072 WHACK! review, I'll have a look at it's counterpart 42073 BASH! today. This'll be mostly a skim through as it could almost be a cut and paste job, given the two set's similarities. If you haven't read the previous one you'll find that here. If you've already done that, then skip on past the break for a mainly pictorial and comparative piece.
Priced at £17.99 / €19.99 / $19.99 for 140 pieces, it's a virtually identical specification to WHACK! It's in the same sized box of course, and I have the same angry teenager showing it for scale.
The rear of the box shows the alternate 'B' model that can be built by combining 42072 WHACK! and 42073 BASH! together by using the PDF instructions available from the LEGO website.
Inside there are 2 bags, 2 beams, 2 chunky tires and an instruction booklet with 53 steps...
...and again just 3 stickers.
The build process is the same format.
The differences between the sets start to show at this stage.
And finally the wheels, engine block and roof piece to finish. It's another chunky buggy and it complements WHACK! really well.
Here's some other angles...
...and here it is compared to it's sister set.
The play features are exactly the same here, a pull back motor and an engine block that pings off when the vehicle is crashed into something.
Of course, it's a perfect excuse to try some more head to heads.
Overall
What can I say? Despite this being a repeat of 42072 WHACK! with a different skin I totally enjoyed it. I probably enjoyed it more having the pair of them to pit against each other, and I'll see about building the 'B' model and reporting back when I've gotten through the other priorities in my build queue.
If I could only choose one, I'd go for WHACK! as that has the edge for me aesthetically, but aside from a personal preference on design, there's nothing between them at all. The functions are the same and the build experience is the same.
It's a fine thing that both sets can stand on their own two feet (four wheels?) successfully and also work as a pair that enhances enjoyment. You can't go far wrong by purchasing BASH! or indeed it's sibling WHACK! so go ahead, pick a colour and choose a team.
Many thanks to the LEGO Group for providing Brickset with a copy of the set. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Thanks for these reviews! Due to them, I've added the pull back motor to a wish list. Personally, I'd probably go for WHACK! for the set of 4 matching tires, but that's just me.
Are the boxes shrinking, or is your angry teenager growing?
