I bought this train on special when it first came out, but I didn't care for it much, so I just sold it on via eBay. I kinda regret that now, although I still feel like they've released far better bullet-style trains before and after this one.
The colour scheme was fine, but I can't deal with carriages that are only four bricks tall. These carriages would've been easy enough to adjust, but I couldn't figure out how to change the engine (to make it five bricks tall as well), so I just threw in the towel.
I don’t think you need to regret it at all. It is pretty un inspiring
LEGO should make these sets with the new LEGO CITY trains.
I wish there were still a devoted Trains Theme, w/several individual sets like this released ea. year. I feel like the current "everything and the kichen sink in a single set" approach, w/related high cost, is very off putting to Trains newcomers.
^ This.
It's amazing that towards the end of the 9V era that LEGO released this individual train car. They also released the individual locomotive 10157. These two cars complemented the train set 4511 which was released the previous year. So you didn't have to buy two whole train sets to make a sensible looking train.
We cannot now imagine LEGO releasing the individual train cars for the Emerald Night, Horizon Express or the current passenger train set 60197.
I don't think it was very popular - if it had a red stripe it would have looked like an ICE train.
I believe this was one of the last individual train cars ever sold. As DavidGraham said, this set and 10157 (strange they had set numbers in the 10000 range, usually reserved for D2C sets) had cars that could expand upon 4551. However, these 2 sets are literally the exact cars from 4551, with the same minifigures and same "4551" sticker on the undercarriage! Though I can see why not a lot of people would spend almost twice as much on a second copy of 4551, as the rails couldn't be expanded as only curved track was included.
Also, the light bluish gray backpack is exclusive to this set and 4551. The Agent Smith-esque minifigure only came in 4 World City sets and his head has never been used elsewhere.
