- This is a bittersweet set for me since it is my final set I designed for LEGO. Having grown up with the prequel trilogy and having beaten Episode I podracer game many times, I was excited to get the chance to expand my design palette and design some Brickheadz.
We got the brief for a collection of characters. The heavy hitters being Darth Maul and Jar Jar. I was asked at one point to explore a Watto but I couldn't get it looking quite right with the parts I had available.
Darth Maul was relatively easy since he doesn't change outfits. I had explored Qui-Gon with his poncho but after we decided to do Queen Amidala in her classic red robe, I sectioned the 6 characters into pairs. Queen Amidala and Captain Panaka for Naboo before the invasion, Anakin and Jar Jar for the Tatooine arc and Qui-Gon and Maul for the final duel.
I'm so proud of how Jar Jar turned out. It was tricky but I'm very happy with how he was able to be adapted to Brickheadz form. Anakin having his podracing helmet was a must have for me. It's so iconic from all the promotional materials. You can see his eyes by removing the goggles by the 1x1 horizontal clip and rotating them 180 degrees.
Queen Amidala was concepted by JME who did an awesome job. It barely changed to the final product. And my personal addition I campaigned for was Captain Panaka. He added to the color scheme and his outfit details were able to be achieved without any prints. Plus all his drum lacquered parts were a huge plus.
My favorite part and most challenging are both Jar Jar. It look a lot of work to make him accurate, cute, and "Brickheadz" enough. I hope anyone who builds the set enjoys reliving their memories of Episode I or making news ones with their young ones in their lives.
Well, off to my next adventure! I hope I was able to bring some joy to some builders with my designs. I am grateful and blessed to have gotten to live this LEGO dream!
