- I was big into Lego as a kid from roughly 1997 to 2001. During this time my favorite themes were UFO, Aquasharks, Aquaraiders, Space Port, Life on Mars, Star Wars Episode I, and Mindstorms. By 2002, I was in middle school and my interest began to wane, and aside from a couple of Star Wars prequel sets I had picked up as the movies came out, I had completely moved on from Lego between 2002-2007.
Then in 2008 something weird happened. It was the summer after I had graduated high school. I had a lot of free time and decided randomly to go into our old Lego bucket to see if I could rebuild some of our old sets. I really enjoyed building again, and began to look at what Lego was offering set-wise to see if I could catch up on some cool stuff. This was around the time where Lego Indiana Jones was debuting, Lego Star Wars was putting out some really good content from all the eras, and a Lego Batman set based on The Tumbler from The Dark Knight came out. I was in the right place at the right time, because these new sets really hooked me and I wanted more.
It snowballed from there. I wanted to get all the iconic Star Wars ships I never had as a kid. I got big into the Clone Wars theme that was side by side with the show. For my birthday the next year, I asked for a Death Star. More great themes kept coming out - Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, Marvel and DC Super Heroes, Toy Story, Simpsons, The Lego Movie, Disney, great one-off sets from Lego Ideas. Collectible Minifigures became a thing, and it became a habit to go out every few months and feel out bags for ones that I wanted. One year I saw a BOGO 50% on modular buildings from Toys R Us, and I became hooked on those as well. Then Lego Dimensions came out and collided so many great franchises together. I also began to flex my creative side with MOCs when inspiration strikes from time to time.
Lego has been a non-stop hobby since the summer of 2008. I've been very fortunate to be able to maintain the hobby through college and into adulthood with the same level of enthusiasm. It's surpassed even the wildest expectations I had as a kid for the kinds of sets and themes they could produce. And I hope it continues to be great. - Collection:
