LEGO Ninjago - Ice Dragon Attack Review

Written by (AFOL , rhodium-rated reviewer) in Germany,

This set is a really fun set to have and to play with. I also like the design of this dragon. The fins can be folded and the arms, fingers, legs and the feet of the dragon can be moved as well. What I also like about this set is that the head can be squeezed to launch the blue ball. The build is really fun, and we also don't get any stickers to worry about. I also can't complain about the number of minifigs we get in this set. As I told you in the beginning: It's a great set to have for sure.

All in all, this set is a great set and I would HIGHLY recommend you to get this. You can find this set on eBay and BrickLink for sure. Here is the link where you can check out the full gallery I made for this set on my website: www.klokriecher.de

"Feel the chill of the ice dragon and run... before it is too late." -Zane DX-

Written by (TFOL , bronze-rated reviewer) in United States,

One of my favorite sets I got for my birthday, the Ice Dragon Attack was very impressive and fun to play with! Zane is my second favorite Ninja and looks nice in his DX suit! Krazi, the skeleton of lightning, has a nice Jester Hat , but I realy wish he had his Shoulder Pads! The Dragon, named Shard by Zane himself, looks great for the first Ninjago Dragon set. His Head looks very Japanese and shoots the Ice Sphere with great accuracy. His body has some rare-ish pieces and looks nice although the "Dragon God" bearing sign is unstable and falls off easily. The tail is ok, but I wish it had a little more detail at the end like all the others do. Finaly, it's wings are very detailed and elaboratly designed, yet unfortunatly they fall easily because of poor conections. The claws however are very impressive! This is also the cheapest dragon set out there so I highly recomend it!

Best of the January Ninjago Sets

Written by (AFOL , gold-rated reviewer) in Canada,

First, I should mention that this set seems to be flying off the shelves. It took several shopping trips to different stores to track one down and it was the very last one in stock. Also, this model is back-ordered on the official lego site at the moment.

    Box/Instructions

The box is fairly small and shows the dragon in a very nice pose. The instructions are straightforward and easy to follow.

    Parts

This set has some great parts. You get the upper and lower jaw pieces, some excellent feet with claws, quite a few transparent blue pieces, orange claws, a printed panel with Japanese characters on it, and three gold shuriken.

    Minifigures

This set comes with two minifigures: Zane and Krazi. This version of Zane is one of my favourite minifigures. His torso and legs are both printed on the front with a gold dragon and a belt, and the design is wonderful. I am less pleased with the printing on the back of the torso, I'm not sure what sort of ninja would have his name printed on his clothes (kind of defeats the purpose of wearing a mask...). But overall, an excellent figure and a must for any fan of ninjas. Now, I don't like the skeleton as much, but I suspect that that is because of my age, younger children would probably like this figure a great deal. Suffice it to say, I don't care for the new skeleton torso and I find his legs to be too short. However, he does come with a jester hat which is not a common piece.

    The build

The build was fairly easy, but considering the piece count and that this theme seems to be aimed at a younger age group (in my opinion), that it not surprising.

    The completed model

I love the completed model. While it doesn't look very good from behind (it's body is too small and its tail doesn't look great), when you pose it facing forward or on an angle, it makes an impressive sight. I particularly enjoy how the head looks like when the energy ball is in its jaws and I am pleased with the design of the claws on the wings. The energy ball also shoots very well. It requires enough force that it is unlikely to fire by accident, but not so much as to cause difficulty, and it fires a decent distance.

However, this model could have been designed better in order to be more pose-able and sometimes the sign falls off. Overall, I like this model. It is very playable and it does fit into some really cool poses, even if it could have been better.

    Summary

I recommend this model for younger children who will really like the ninja and dragon and enjoy playing with it. I also recommend this for older children and adults who are interested in collecting the minifigure or using this set as a display. It isn't overly expensive and comes with a fair amount of good pieces, so it is well worth the money spent.

I think it could have been better, but looking at the pictures of the fire temple, I think lego might have done a better job on that dragon, especially with regard to the tail. So if the design is a deal-breaker, you would be better off saving your money for that set and getting a cool dragon in a bigger set that looks like it's going to be really great.

Fantastic Model, well worth your money

Written by (TFOL , gold-rated reviewer) in United States,

I got this set as a birthday present. I had not expected it-and I was very pleased. The set is by and far the best from the winter 2011 Ninjago line.

    Box/Instructions

The box has a very detailed display that is very well done. Beautiful detailing.

    Parts

The set is a bit low on parts for it's price, but it has quite a few unique and new molds, some of which are quite large. The dragon head's jaw and upper part are both great-my only issue with them is that they are rubbery and soft, and that the upper part doesn't fit perfectly on the thornax launcher pieces. There are also 6 long white "helicopter blade" pieces, and a lot of transparent soft light blue (medium blue?) pieces, the best being the two "rock pattern" pieces. Other fantastic pieces include the claws and the 2x2s with TECHNIC balls/sockets.

    Minifigures

You get two minfigures with this set: Zane and Krazi. At first I was a bit hesitant about buying this line and I didn't appreciate how good the Ninjas were-but looking at them now, I must admit, the Ninjas are certainly fantastic. The dragon suit is beautiful. The Skeleton (Krazi) is quite good as well-it has arms that aren't overly long and serve the purpose of holding weapons correctly (hurrah!) has some cool new feet, a new body with torso printing, a cool/odd face, and a joker hat.

    The build

It's a bit simple, but still interesting.

    The completed model

The set is well worth buying. It has many features and looks very good. My main issue is that the shuriken (3 gold ones) are rubbery and more likely to break, and that it's a bit tough/unwieldy to launch the Zamor sphere in the Dragon's mouth. Otherwise, it's great-the wings, the claws, etc-perfect.

    Summary

I'd highly recommend it. It's great for younger kids, but it should also appeal to older people for many different reasons, not least among them the parts and the minifigures.
