Combine with Train Ride for a great Holiday Scene.

Written by (AFOL , rhodium-rated reviewer) in Canada,

Set #40263 Christmas Town Square: This second Holiday set released by LEGO last year features more of a substantial build compared to the Train Ride set, also you’ll find a better selection of Minifigure parts here which aren’t all odd ball off the wall choices. Anyway let’s get onto the review and discuss all of the elements of this set, as you’ll notice I skipped discussing the parts for these two sets because honestly the parts are all pretty standard.

    Box/Instructions

Box: This box shares the same colour scheme and design as the Christmas Train set, it’s a fairly good uniform design choice for the two sets which are meant to be combined in modular fashion. Unfortunately mine was damaged in shipment so it’s a bit crinkled and water damaged at the bottom.

Instructions: Again we have the set manual looking perfect as always. This one shows the Christmas Train in the back, and that’s about it.

    Minifigures

Boy: Again this child looks great, the parts are all the same we’ve seen before. One thing to note about this figure though, the facial print seems to be used more often for girls since it does have the little indicators for eyelashes. But it’s not too bad compared to what happened with the parts re-use in the other set.

Girl: This figure is much better, she has a less defined female torso print which helps a heck of a lot more than the curvy child from the other set. Her parts are all generic parts, which is what you get in these sets.

Grandma: This Minifigure looks ok, they’re using the generic parts from other sets of course, however these look fine. I am not sure why, but she seems to have a misprint situation, her head features a double-sided print, but for the life of me I can’t see any differences between them, so I’m assuming this head got the print on both sides by mistake during production.

The build & The completed model

As I noted above the build in this set is a lot more substantial, and the reason for that is the large Christmas Tree being built up in the set to make this scene complete the overall scenery looking scene when both sets are put together. The tree is the centerpiece.

There’s also a mailbox and a lamp post element, another food stall and a small sled being pulled by the Minifigures to deliver the packages and letters or Christmas cards to the set. There’s also a snowman endcap piece for completing the set.

Speaking of the lampposts I really love the look of them, I believe these sets are using the same builds as the Winter Village sub-theme, old-school looking lamps which could fit inside Narnia quite nicely.

    Overall opinion

This is a great looking set and combining with the Christmas Train Ride allows you to make a very detailed looking scene with the tree in the middle and all of the little stands and other elements together to surround it and create a large Town Square display. I definitely recommend them both together, but if you can only get one I think this one, with the large tree build looks a better offering. So I recommend this set just slightly more with others.
