Really solid entry level supercar set.
I've been interested in getting more into Technic and this is the biggest Technic set I've gotten so far, and I have to say this is a really great set. The build is challenging and has a ton of really great details and overall, looks pretty accurate to the real car. Just make sure to get all of the parts in the engine block correct, I had some issues with that.
The functions all work very smoothly while the build still maintains high sturdiness. Particularly the rear wing is my favourite feature, with an interesting build process and incredibly smooth actuation.
The only real flaws I have with this set is just a few questionable piece usages that many other have noted. The headlights and wheel choices definitely do show that this is a step down from many other larger Technic sets, showing that the budget was put into other areas of the set. However, this doesn't bother me a ton as it is still a great set in just about every other aspect, highly recommended6 out of 6 people thought this review was helpful.
Enjoyable
Once in a while I would buy set(s) just for parts. The Ford is one of these: Dark blue is a nice touch to the technic line (42079, 42112) since the bright hue vanished. (Also new parts are not immediately available from Bricks & Pieces any more.)
Parts
This is what I bought the set for: many different and useful parts in dark blue. Not only the panels but also beams and connectors.
The picture shows content from bags no 3. There are more of the blue parts in the 4th section. There is little colour coding of pieces noticeable. The most obvious one is the lime green 2M beam used in the transmission of the rear spoiler. I would have preferred to have the Cross Blocks in dark blue rather than white.
The sticker sheet for this car is smaller than that from the smaller sized Bugatti. Mine was loose inside the box.
The instruction box does not have the set number written anywhere. All parts were (still) packed in plastic bags.
Build
- Don't be worried - too much - if you notice that the amount of small black left and right panels do not match.
- In step 87 make check that the 4L glow-in-the-dark rod aligns with the 3L levers: Otherwise it could restrict the rise of the rear spoiler.
- You could gain a bit of steering angle if you omit the blue axle pins that are supposed to be added at step 121. They will restrict the travel of the toothed rack. But I found this hardly necessary: Only if front suspension is fully compressed you will have one front wheel - slightly - touching the chassis.
- At the beginning you will hardly notice but the construction includes several attachment points for the outer shell. Sometimes these are done to create 1/2 M offsets - in any direction.
- I suggest to swap building steps 222 & 223 - if the panels are added the red axle to lock the roof is difficult to push in.
- There are a few sequences where I found it difficult to add hull pieces because I found the attachment point not easy to reach (Too big fingers?).
- I estimate my effective building time to about 3 hours. I had small breaks between the sections.
Functions
- All wheel independent suspension. This appears to be very stiff e.g. you'll have to press to car down to lower the chassis. On the front there are two red towball pins (step 96) that seem to restrict the lower range of travel.
- Front wheel steering from the 12tooth gear in the middle of the roof. This is probably intended to be removed if the car is a display item only. However, there is no obvious storage indicated. The drivers steering wheel is not connected to the steering.
- 6-cylinder engine connected by a short transmission (two gears) to the rear axle.
- Openable cabin doors - I am always surprised how complex the construction turns out.
- Settable rear spoiler - from a lever in the cabin. The transmission is the most complex part of this model.
- (Small) openable canopies on front and rear. The latter allows for a - slightly - better view of the V6 engine.
Final Remark(s)
The dark blue car is nice to look at. The overall shape is more recognisable than with black models as the Bugatti or the Charger.
I really like the size of this model: It is big enough to allow many details but does not eat up space as the larger (1:8 models, 8860, 8880) cars. (This also results in a reasonable price.)
Notes
(A few) More pictures can be found in my Brickshelf folder.
- I have replaced the white parts by similar of vibrant yellow. (For me) This looks pretty nice with the dark blue.
- The wheel arches look rather empty. Without changes to the chassis you can replace the rear tyres by these larger ones (68.7 mm). The more common 68.8 ZR don't fit as the rim is too wide.
- At the front, the tips of the panels stick out. This becomes obvious only when the model is viewed front certain angles.
- The white box (?) on the right cabin side is what ...?

2022 Ford GT for Grandpa
I tried to purchase before Xmas, but it became unavailable, then the price rose by $20 CD to $149.
Guess Lego rushed back into production, because my set was missing parts in early bags that I had to "borrow" from later bags just to keep going.
Finally, I got stuck when no more borrowable parts were available.
There is an issue with the rear wheel assembly, which I've read is a known matter. Reading a few posts, it seems that there is a real need to push in pieces into the rear wheel assembly a bit harder than would seem necessary.
Two of the 3 beige gears need to have axles pushed into them, but there is very little into which the axles can be shoved.
Nonetheless, this is an intriguing build, especially for this Grandpa ;-)
