It's worth taking seriously what BigTech has been saying for decades:
"Even if billions perish in the coming [...] catastrophe..we shouldn’t be too concerned".
They said [climate], but also read [forever wars, poverty, pandemics].
They're white-male-supremacist, eugenicist fascists & likely malignant narcissists (psychopaths).
Well past time to stop feeding them.
A future Africa "governed" by a giant computer:
"Like a rancher in Wyoming, you know where all your cattle are.. what they’re doing.. Your goal is for them to thrive.. w/out breeding too much."
South Africa doesn't need to be all white to restore order. "You just need governance."
The "solution" for W Oakland is to cede it to the Chinese govt to "impose an authoritarian surveillance regime".

Psychopathy & Epstein's circle
Because psychopathy is about power (money is a means), people with the neurotype tend to gravitate to lucrative professions.
& men are twice as likely as women to have it.
Tech, law, CEOs, finance, politics, surgery etc, are male-dominated professions where there can be ~15%.
Not all those with the neurotype do harm, but the Musk-Thiel-Trumps are total wreckers.
We, alone, can stop them by withdrawing our support.
How Epstein Infiltrated Big Tech
"Epstein was not cast out after his child sex-crime conviction" in 2008, but remained in Big Tech's inner circle, "including Musk, Bezos, Brin, Page, Gates & Zuckerberg".
"Today, those same figures exert enormous strategic influence" on the Trump govt.
The "involvement of a convicted sex offender was normalised in this elite Silicon Valley network."

"How Epstein Saved Bitcoin – & Accessed Trump’s Tech Inner Circle"
Big Tech framed crypto as a way of funding network states, ie, CEO-governed, tax-free, regulation-free, anti-democratic alternatives to nation states.
And Epstein - via Big Tech & Peter Thiel - moved into the centre of American political power to help define the Trump project.

This is troubling--not that it's "AI critics" but that it's #TESCREAL cultists paying for coverage of AI at major outlets, e.g., Bloomberg, Time, The Verge, LA Times.
AI critics funded AI coverage at top newsrooms https://www.semafor.com/article/12/07/2025/ai-critics-funded-ai-coverage-at-top-newsrooms
Something I’ve been thinking about a lot in the current battle over the future of (pseudo) AI is the cotton gin.
I live in a country where industrial progress is always considered a positive. It’s such a fundamental concept to the American exceptionalism claim that we are taught never to question it, let alone realize that it’s propaganda.
One such myth, taught early in grade school, is the story of Eli Whitney and the cotton gin. Here was a classic example of a labor-saving device that made millions of lives better. No more overworked people hand cleaning the cotton (slaves, though that was only mentioned much later, if at all). Better clothes and bedding for the world. Capitalism at its best.
But that’s only half the story of this great industrial time saver. Where did those cotton cleaners go? And what was the impact of speeding up the process?
Now that the cleaning bottleneck was gone, the focus was on picking cotton as fast as possible. Those cotton cleaners likely, and millions of other slaves definitely, were sent to the fields to pick cotton. There was an unprecedented explosion in the slave trade. Industrial time management and optimization methods were applied to human beings using elaborate rule-based systems written up in books. How hard to punish to get optimal productivity. How long their lifespans needed to be to get the lost production per dollar. Those techniques, practiced on the backs and lives of slaves, became the basis of how to run the industrial mills in the North. They are the ancestors of the techniques that your manager uses now to improve productivity.
Millions of people were sold into slavery and worked to death *because* of the cotton gin. The advance it provided did not, in fact save labor overall. Nor did it make life better overall. It made a very small set of people much much richer; especially the investors around the world who funded the banks who funded the slave purchases. It made a larger set of consumers more comfortable at the cost of the lives of those poorer. Over a hundred years later this model is still the basis for our society.
Modern “AI” is a cotton gin. It makes a lot of painstaking things much easier and available to everyone. Writing, reading, drawing, summarizing, reviewing medical cases, hiring, firing, tracking productivity, driving, identifying people in a lineup…they all can now be done automatically. Put aside whether it’s actually capable of doing any of those things *well*; the investors don’t care if their products are good, they only care if they can make more money off of them. So long as they work enough to sell, the errors, and the human cost of those errors, are irrelevant. And like the cotton gin, AI has other side effects. When those jobs are gone, are the new jobs better? Or are we all working that much harder, with even more negative consequences to our life if we fall off the treadmill? One more fear to keep us “productive”.
The Luddites learned this lesson the hard way, and history demonizes them for it; because history isn’t written by the losers.
They’ve wrapped “AI” with a shiny ribbon to make it fun and appealing to the masses. How could something so fun to play with be dangerous? But like the story we are told about the cotton gin, the true costs are hidden.
David Noble builds on the work of White and Ovitt to offer an account of what he terms “the religion of technology” which amounts to a pervasive intermingling of religious concerns with the project of technology as a well as a tendency to link the quest for transcendence to technology. From L.M. Sacasas's blog: https://thefrailestthing.com/2012/02/22/christianity-and-the-history-of-technology-part-one/ titled Christianity and the History of Technology, Part One
Sacasas has a newer Substack that goes into more recent events: https://theconvivialsociety.substack.com/p/secularization-comes-for-the-religion-6df . There are some great references in this newsletter, including American Technological Sublime by David Nye.
Nye tells a fascinating story about how Americans routinely experienced the advent of new technologies as encounters with the sublime. Not all technologies, of course, but Nye documents how technologies of a certain scale and dynamism elicited feelings of awe and wonder that could easily be described as religious in nature. Nye considers, for example, first encounters with the railroad, the factory, the Hoover Dam, the electrified cityscape, the Golden Gate Bridge, and, later, the atomic bomb and the launch of a Saturn V rocket during the Apollo program.
Nye shows that the experience of the technological sublime was incorporated into elaborate civic ceremonies and rituals that celebrated not only the technological marvel at hand, but also human ingenuity and the body politic. The broad argument is that technological development is a religion in the United States. This is not meant as a metaphor, but as a literal fact: how Americans treat technology is not like a religious activity, it literally is one. I think this goes a long way towards explaining why we're so weird about #tech here and now and especially why there are actual cults formed around it. Noble calls this phenomenon the "religion of technology" and spells out the connections. Sacasas weaves this together with modern developments.
Meghan O'Gieblyn makes these connections with modern developments as well, for instance in this talk God in the machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTXleWp5fUA . So has Émile P. Torres: https://www.xriskology.com

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is facing an internal crisis as staff members and scientists have threatened to resign over the anticipated appointment of Paul Christiano to a crucial, though non-political, position at the agency’s newly-formed US AI Safety Institute (AISI), according to at least two sources with direct knowledge of the situation, who asked to remain anonymous.https://venturebeat.com/ai/nist-staffers-revolt-against-potential-appointment-of-effective-altruist-ai-researcher-to-us-ai-safety-institute/
Good for them! #longtermist / #EffectiveAltruist / #TESCREAL people are cultists and have no place in government. They're obsessed with fantasies like #xrisk that are disconnected from reality and distract from the actual harms #AI is already causing here on Earth. It's precisely the same phenomenon as holding endless discussions about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin while ignoring that people are suffering. It sounds like Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo might be a Kool-aid drinker herself or is sympathetic to the viewpoints of the Kool-aid drinkers.
From her Wikipedia entry:
Gina Marie Raimondo...an American businesswoman, lawyer, politician, and venture capitalistEmphasis mine.
It's alarming that this is even happening, and you know the fix is in because they tried to rush the appointment without informing staffers ahead of time. I hope #NIST staffers prevail.

If you're not familiar, there are zealots, some of whom have been given a national platform by US Senator Chuck Schumer (!), who use "P(doom)" as a shorthand for the probability that artificial intelligence will rise up and cause human extinction. This is peak scientism, wherein one uses scientific-sounding language (like "probability") in support of what amounts to a religious belief. The wide use of phrases like this is why I don't hesitate to use words lke "zealot" to describe such folks.
It's exactly the same reasoning error that lies behind trying to count how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
P(doom), the "probability" that #AI or #AGI will doom humanity, is a quantity that #longtermist / #TESCREAL zealots seem to care a lot about. It is the quintessential example of the reasoning error that ecological rationality calls out. There is no way to quantify the likelihood of "doom", no matter how you define that word, and it's pure nonsense to try or pretend you have. Doom is a large world phenomenon. The people credited with inventing the frameworks and techniques that allow you to even think in terms of P(doom), like Leonard Savage, explicitly called out just this sort of application as preposterous.Nevertheless, US Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer invited a bunch of tech CEOs and technologists, among whom numbered many #longermist and similar kinds of zealots, to opine on their personal assessments of P(doom) in a legitimate hearing in front of the US Congress (there's good reporting on this here: https://www.techpolicy.press/us-senate-ai-insight-forum-tracker/ ).
I lack the words to express what I feel every time I'm reminded of this. Not good things.
One thing that stood out for me, which hadn't really sunk in quite the same way for me before: longtermists cite things like runaway #AI and bio-engineered pathogens as so-called "existential risks" that might cause human extinction, but they downplay environmental degradation as a non-existential risk. Yet, experience is the reverse of this: we have exactly zero examples of AI causing the extinction of a species and few/zero examples of a bio-engineered pathogen causing a species extinction (1), whereas we have piles and piles of examples of species extinctions caused by environmental changes. In fact, we have loads of extinctions we ourselves caused via our alterations of Earth's environment in only the last few decades! We don't even have to resort to the fossil record, which includes many more examples, to make the case; we can look at recent, carefully-documented studies using modern techniques.
Of the many flaws with #longtermism, which the essay goes to pains to spell out, this one really nags at me. Longtermism being a goofy worldview held by wealthy and powerful people is concerning enough; the fact that its primary proponents say things running directly opposite to reality makes it very dangerous, in my view. I think this is a tell.
#TESCREAL #AI #AGI #EA #longtermism
(1) I'm hedging there because I am not knowledgeable enough to say with certainty whether anyone's ever engineered a pathogen that did cause an extinction event. I can't imagine something like this happening often if it has, though.
Iain McGilchrist, in The Master and His Emissary, offers many clinical examples of people with debilitating (or temporarily induced) impairments to the right brain hemisphere failing to perceive embodiedness. To these people, bodies are just collections of parts, sometimes wooden and lifeless. The world to them is abstract, floating, as it were, out of any physical context. Thought within these right-impaired brains systematically favors certain, linear constructs extending indefinitely—as opposed to cyclical, tangled, or ambiguous realities. Death is unacceptable: does not compute.
The techno-optimist cheerleader, therefore, not only reminds me of a dangerous ideological zealot—ready to eliminate any number of species for the next awesome gadget—but also of a tragically-impaired creature missing half his brain. From https://dothemath.ucsd.edu/2023/10/our-ugly-magnificence/
