@brayd there is always #matrix but from my experience it is way heavier than xmpp. OMEMO, the XMPP E2E thing, is/was based on the Signal (Axolotl) crypto protocol and probably doesn't work worse than what Matrix gives you in that regard.
Both have ample selection on servers and clients these days.
Give both a try.

Question for the community. How's y'all's experience with various Instant Messaging services? I don't use discord except with some of my friends, and I'm trying to get away, as it seems to be going the way of enshittification.
I've used Matrix before, and I'm aware of some of the technical annoyances as a user. Does it tend to have good community (like, among gay nerdy Mastodon folks at least?). What about the other options, like XMPP clients, or like Delta Chat or something?
I believe I've even heard (i might be wrong) that IRC 3 allows for asynchronous texting, so you don't have to be online in order to keep receiving messages that you can read later? Is this a thing? Everytime I look this up, I can't find any good info one way or the other.
Even if there's no community, I'm curious what y'all think has the potential to become a somewhat ubiquitous technology among folks on Fedi? I wanna see more Instant Messaging online in these spaces.

So because I have gone temporarily off my rocker, I'm working on an #xmpp client using #dotnet 10 and WPF, with artalk-xmpp for XMPP, libsignal for #OMEMO, and prism for screen reader output where needed. I'm only an evening into it, and I can already tell that OMEMO is going to be the source of complicated, inexplicable, and unreproducible bug reports for decades to come. It's still not as overcomplicated as #matrix, though.
Maybe checkout #ox (#OpenPGP for #XMPP). It's not as complicated as #OMEMO. it's currently supported by #profanity, #gajim and #GoSendxmpp. #Conversations is currently working on support.

What I find fascinating is that you can almost see how the protocol evolved over time. XMPP has been extended for more than two decades and many of those additions are still visible today.
Direct messages and file attachments work well, which is all I really need. I haven't set up group chats or VoIP and honestly, I probably never will.
One thing I underestimated was the setup. Different services often require their own subdomains and I never managed to get file uploads working reliably behind my reverse proxy. Direct messages worked fine, but as soon as I enabled file uploads, everything started breaking. After spending way too much time troubleshooting it, I eventually gave up and exposed Prosody directly instead.
For clients I'm using Conversations on Android and Dino on my Linux desktop, and I've been really happy with both.
It's been fun exploring another decentralized communication protocol.

NodeInfo isn't part of #ActivityPub and neither is it required to be implemented by fedi software.
What #fediverse is and isn't is an interesting question. Does following between actors make the software on both ends part of the fediverse? Should a fediverse app support #microblogging? Be compatible with Mastodon?
Perhaps being part of fediverse means if 2 independent 3rd-parties are able to interoperate with each other? Does that require sending Follow msgs?
If someone has a federated Product catalogue that federates with itself and a 3rd-party Order delivery service, is it part of the fediverse? Even when no Follow is sent?
It is undefined what being part of the fediverse means. There used to be a Federated Network Association (Feneas) as a major dev community besides #SocialHub, which defined fediverse as any software that implemented AP, #XMPP, or #Matrix protocol.
@steve even wrote that nothing even truly implements AP, and I tend to agree.
During the @ietf #hackaton we worked with @dino and @daniel from Conversations on the XEP-0490: Message Displayed Synchronization synchronization implementation ✨
This means if you read a message on a device it's shown as read on all the others 🔄
There is still a few small things to iron out but it will be there for Movim 0.35! 🫶

Nicht bei den Großen sein. Wenn du gut und nachvollziehbar begründet warum du da nicht sein willst, dann installieren sich Leute, denen du wichtig bist auch einen #xmpp client. Wenn man bessere Alternativen (kein Silo, offenes Protokoll etc.) wie meinen Favoriten #xmpp immer gleich als "nutzt ja keiner" abschreibt und die Leute ins nächste geschlossene Amisilo jagt ist das aber auch eine selbsterfüllende Prophezeiung. XEP-0516 "XMPP Decentralized ID (XID)" that I've authored as part of my work on metadata reduction/serverless (https://nlnet.nl/project/ServerlessXMPP/, thanks NLnet!) has been published.
The goal is to have your XMPP identity independent of your DNS-based domain. At some point, it should be possible to have your XMPP account independent of your server.
Note that current version has issues and will be updated soon.
Work is in progress on XMPP deeper decentralization.

Ist doppelt witzig, weil Whatsapp ursprünglich auf #XMPP (#ejabberd by @ejabberd) beruht und sie die Telefonnummern erst mühsam ranflanschen mußte. Kann #DerSpiegel aber nicht wissen, die Info ist in #Wikipedia versteckt.
@bazkie Possibly, the #XMPP could be used first — e.g. the #Prosody installation and configuration could be dead simple and it supports all necessary encryption out of the box.
As practice shows, the authoritarian governments usually one step behind the tech, the society is using. So, first time the simple solution, like Prosody on the server out of reach of Five eyes countries, bought for crypto and without logins logging, will be enough I think.
When the next generation of politics will learn about XMPP — well it's time to deeper and mass use mesh networks. As I heard, there are big communities of #Meshtastic in the Europe, especially in Germany.

How well does SIgnal work on BSD?
On my OS, #Debian, their desktop app does not work without also having their Android or iOS app. There is a workaround with a command line tool, but then it might be easier to self-host #Jabber/#XMPP 😉
Which also has the advantage of not being on AWS, i.e. DJT pressing the #killSwitch when falling asleep…

Note, that the current version of Pidgin (2.x) is hopelessly outdated in respect to modern #Jabber/#XMPP. The next major release (3.x) might change that, but for now it's like trying to use #NCSA #Mosaic for modern web 😉

@abucci There is actually a TODO list implementation in Libervia based on XEP-0346 (also does grocery list, ticket system, and whatever shared list). I'm also the author of XEP-0471 and linking both is planed at some point (but I'm very overwhelmed).
E2e encryption is implemented in backend, but not yet accessible for this feature in Web UI.

Screenshot of the shared list interface with the grocery list UI. We can see many grocery items in French (bread, pears, etc). Some of them have a red strike to show they are done. On the right there is a number to show the quantities, and a cross to remove the item. On the top there is a button to create a new item, invite people to the list (read-only or read/write), search items (for long lists), and at the bottom a text field to quickly add new item.
Open up chat to myself. Send a chat for each todo item. Use a reaction emoji to indicate status (done/cancelled/etc). Reply to the chat to add additional information and/or surface the item. All of it is shared among all devices, encrypted, and generates notifications. The one feature I'd like that I haven't figured out how to hack manually is scheduled reminders. An XMPP chat app that had scheduled messages could do it! I haven't found an XEP specifically about this but XEP-0471 might be bent to this purpose.
A #blind friend does use #Conversations_im (or more correct: #Quicksy) by @daniel on Android. I was surprised by that, because I thought, it were not developed with #accessebility in mind. But it seems to work sufficiently well for them.
I don't know if #Monal by @Monal on iOS works for the #visuallyImpaired, though.
For Windows and MacOS no idea at all. Maybe #Gajim by @gajim? Or a web client such as #ConverseJS by @jcbrand?
If you want to communicate with your Hermes Agent via #XMPP, here's a plugin for that. Code is extracted from three different PR's to the hermes agent github repo to add XMPP that weren't being merged, and moved into a plugin. I just cherry picked and packaged everything with the help of local models running on my laptop, with a final pass by a cloud model (if you read the readme carefully you can tell what cloud model) to update documentation and fix a few loose ends the smaller (but free and more environmentally friendly) local models left. Everything I could test is working. Unfortunately I don't have an XMPP client that supports reactions, typing indicators, threads, or voice messages. But it connects to the server via a secure connection, and both versions of omemo work. However you feel about #AI, communication should at least be E2E encrypted and not controlled by discord/telegram. github.com/fastfinge/hermes-xmpp-plugin

My vague impression is:
Delta is focussed on private chats (individuals, small groups) and has its strength there.
#XMPP is deliberately a universal protocol for everything: private chats, team chats, public chats, social. In my company we even built an IoT product based on it!
Still, some #Jabber clients are focussed: #Conversations_im on private chats, #Movim on team chats and social features etc.
Yes, Delta is mainly made by a German company, so they have more or less the complete project in their hands. All clients are based on exactly the same library. That gives a nice "out-of-the-box" experience.
#Jabber/#XMPP is a huge and diverse ecosystem with sometimes conflicting interests or priorities. And it's an open standard with many implementations, which can result in incompatibilites.
I prefer the latter, because I see more advantages in that approach, but YMMV.
So I set up a XMPP server in my homelab this weekend to see how the ecosystem has evolved since the last time I used it. Only took me a few hours.
It seems like it has pretty much everything we'd expect from IM these days? E2EE with forward secrecy, group chats, message archives, reactions, file uploads, audio messages, voice and video calling, location sharing, etc. etc. It's even federated!
Why are we sleeping on this tech? Is there some unmitigated downside I haven't discovered yet?
I've warned my normie friends that I'm fed up with FB Messenger and WhatsApp and that I'm going to self-host an alternative and if they want to keep in touch with me, they have to contact me there... Now I'm left wondering what's more lightweight for my modest budget VPS between #Matrix and #XMPP (probably the latter?) and what might favor a smooth transition later to an #OpenBSD VPS (might switch from Hostinger to OpenBSD Amsterdam, though both seem to rely to some degree on bloody Cloudflare)... probably XMPP?

The microphone level has been redesigned and the UI is now refreshing smoothly. 🎙️
Everything is working in full P2P and is based on the XMPP standard. No platform specific protocol.
You want to interoperate with Movim? Implement XEP-0272: Multiparty Jingle. Et voilà! ✨

Something big is coming for audio and video calls in Movim 😯
You will soon be able to see in real time when your contacts are calling each-others in a group call and join whenever you want... leave, and join again.
Once everything is stabilized the feature will be added to Spaces.
We are this close to have audio (and video) rooms in Spaces 🤏
So, say goodbye to Discord, you'll soon have a fully web-based, Open Source, decentralized and standard calling platform to replace it. ✨

The past few months have been wild for Movim!
We hit our first fundraising goal of €1,700 (covering the basic costs) 🎉, shipped Movim 0.33 "Halley", and held an XMPP hackathon in the French Alps 🇫🇷 ⛰️.
Up next: Spaces upgrades, audio rooms 🎙️, better video calls & SFU support.

Nur weil du das anders siehst musst du das nicht gleich als Arroganz framen.
Aber vom Amisilo ins Amisilo oder Schweizer Silo ändert halt nichts daran, dass man in einem Silo bleibt und das dann Unabhängigkeit zu nennen passt halt nicht.
Und mit etwas Erklärung sind auch Eltern fähig Sachen abseits der Silos zu nutzen. Meine Eltern kommunizieren z.B. seit Jahren über #xmpp mit mir und meiner Frau

@maikek @Shi Irgendwie können viele über #XMPP eine Anekdote erzählen, wie sie mal Probleme/Bugs hatten. Aber Anekdoten davon, wie der bevorzugte Messenger Probleme/Bugs hat erzählt niemand.
Als ich während Corona mit der Familie videotelefonieren wollte, musste ich feststellen, dass Signal keine Anrufe mit mehreren Personen kann. Zum Glück konnte ich meiner Familie den XMPP-Client Jitsi Meet nahelegen.
@Shi Ich denke, der Jabber-Account den ich vor Jahren mal hatte existiert nicht mehr. Damals war ich an der Nicht-Verschlüsselung auf meinem Fon gescheitert. Das hatte XMPP als Protokoll schon drin, aber leider ohne OMEMO. Die Nachricht wurde also geliefert, ich konnte sie nicht lesen und Conversations holte sie nicht mehr, weil sie ja schon da war ... Tja.

Heute probiere ich die Conversations App für #XMPP aus. Davor hatte ich mit Quicksy einen ersten Eindruck gewonnen, fand es aber Kontraproduktiv, das die Telefonnummer Teil der Adresse ist. Nun habe ich ein neues Konto. Noch habe ich leider fast keine Kontakte die XMPP nutzen.
Gibt es hier Leute die das nutzen und Kontakt aufnehmen möchten? Matrix habe ich mittlerweile auch auf dem PC, aber noch nicht mobil. Muss erst wieder Platz auf dem Handy machen.
Morgen ist wieder Digital Independence Day.

I had a good time at #OggCamp at the weekend. There were a few familiar faces, but there was a poll during the intro session where the presenter asked for how many people it was their first time, and between 25%-33% raised their hand, which made for a nice mix.
Polarian (from the XSF) wanted to give talk about Jabber / #XMPP, and I said I would help 😨 .
We originally wanted to have an XMPP stand at EMFCamp, but neither of us got tickets 😭
We managed to get some slides together which we when presented on the Sunday at OggCamp instead.

Movim 0.33 "Halley" is Out! ✨
After months of work and hundreds of commits, this is the biggest Movim release ever made!
This release massively scales up Movim's architecture while introducing exciting features such as Spaces, Hats or improved screen-sharing during video-conferences.
Thanks to @nlnet funding a lot of work was also done to improve accessibility. There is still a lot to do but the bases are there 🫶
