I think I’ll let Charlie take me for a walk this morning so we can breathe some fresh air and get a little exercise. We’ll wait a couple of hours and let the outside warm up first. The temperature usually rises through the day until two or three o’clock, then it drifts back down again like a gentle wave. Usually is the key word — when the temperature starts falling in the middle of the day, something is happening in the atmosphere. Most likely a cold front rolling in from the north.
I used to understand these things a bit better, thanks to a few college classes, but that was a long, long time ago. Still, I remember enough to know that a cold front coming from the south would be a bad omen, especially since I live about eighty miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. That’s where the warm waters feeding the Gulf Stream begin their journey up the eastern coast of the United States and Canada. On the other side of the country, the California Current runs south from British Columbia, carrying much colder water. If you’ve ever dipped your hands in both oceans, you know the difference immediately — the Atlantic feels almost warm compared to the chill of the Pacific.
Those currents do a lot to shape our weather. I wish I could recall more of the details of the country’s physical geography, but the simple truth is this: disrupting those currents would be a very bad thing.
Hmm… another morning where my mind wanders wherever it pleases, even if it leads me into waters deeper than I can swim.

I really enjoyed the Super Bowl last night. It’s a lot easier to relax into the game when the team you’re pulling for is in control for three straight hours, and the Seahawks absolutely were. If you didn’t watch, the final score was 29–13, Seattle. They aren’t my usual team, though. Being originally from California, I tend to root for the Rams, Giants, or Chargers. If two California teams ever met in the Super Bowl, I’d be in real trouble. This time, the Seahawks’ West Coast identity made the choice simple—proximity won out. And honestly, you have to pick a side if you want to feel the full excitement of a football game.
I also loved the halftime show with Bad Bunny. The staging and visuals were fantastic. I don’t speak Spanish—though I wish I did—but it didn’t matter. Roughly 65 million people across the United States and its territories speak Spanish, which is about one in five. It’s woven into the fabric of American life.
I live in Louisiana now, so you might think I’d be a Saints fan. Not quite. Still, unless they’re playing one of my California teams, I can see myself cheering for them. It’s just the local rhythm here.
The truth is, I don’t really keep up with football during the season. I’m vaguely aware games are happening somewhere, and I’ll catch one when the mood strikes. But I always watch the Super Bowl, and I enjoy Thanksgiving games when I’m somewhere that actually gets TV reception. We usually spend Thanksgiving at our little house in Georgia, where we don’t get any channels at all. I’m working on fixing that.

This beach scene from a few years ago is sort of an amalgamation of memories of watching sunsets over the Pacific ocean in the past. I think because I've never been much of a morning person, sunsets always held more interest. Just me?

“Schluss, aus, Ende” / The end
I have a tidy, well-composed version of this scene, with the surf receding and being well-behaved in the distance, but this one seems more appropriate to the times.
Endings can be new beginnings too — messy, uncharted, full of danger and opportunity. The old year is over, with all its joys and horrors. Here we go, into the unknown.

Shoreline Illusion
During one of my forays to the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi, I captured this interesting image of a ring‑billed gull (Larus delawarensis) and a snowy egret (Egretta thula). The scale in the photo feels a bit deceptive. The egret, which is actually the closer and much larger of the two birds, appears almost the same size as the gull. Maybe it’s just me, but the perspective plays a clever little trick on the eye.

Good morning. ☕☕☕
5 December 2025
I was looking forward to cooler weather. Well—it’s here, and it brought the wet with it. I suspect this will be one of those winters that turns part of my yard into a bog, a soggy muddy mess.
Here’s Charlie. It’s ten minutes to mealtime, and he’s making sure I don’t forget. We’ve been hunkered down inside for several days while I try to adjust to the damp chill. And yes, here I go again, talking about the weather. I keep telling myself: get out there, take a walk. At the end of the driveway it’s nothing but a muddy mess, but maybe we’ll go this morning after Charlie eats. Just Charlie and his trusty sidekick—me.
When was the last time you took a trip on a bus? For me, it’s been a while. About twenty years ago, when we first moved here, we rode a Greyhound bus to Houston to pick up a car we had shipped from Germany. The Greyhound stop in town has since closed.
Decades ago, though, I was a regular passenger. Duffle or seabag stowed beneath, and off down the highway. It was a thing then, and I suppose it still is for some folks.
My late mother-in-law used to tickle me with her approach. She treated it as an adventure, always calling it “riding the dog.” She wouldn’t fly, so we’d bring her in by Greyhound when she came to visit. My wife and her sisters would track her progress from stop to stop, like following a trail of breadcrumbs.
There are still Greyhound stations in the larger cities, but I rarely see one of their buses on the road anymore.

Beach vacations only became popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the lifestyle of the wealthy in Western countries. Early Europeans, and especially the ancient Greeks, thought the beach was a place of hardship and death. As a seafaring people, they mostly lived on the coastline, yet they feared the sea and thought that an agricultural lifestyle was safer and more respectable. From The beach wasn’t always a vacation destination - for the ancient Greeks, it was a scary place: https://theconversation.com/the-beach-wasnt-always-a-vacation-destination-for-the-ancient-greeks-it-was-a-scary-place-259356
