It's #SolarPunkSunday so here is a screenshot of a pedal + solar powered bus I'm creating for my new short film. #WindShortFilm Still a work in progress and just today I realized I have to create dozens of cars, because it is a future without capitalism and so no factories, since everything is 3d printed in the backyard, no two cars can be alike. And the shapes have to be funky and fun and outlandish... Whew. I foresee sleepless nights to chun them out

Després de barallar-m'hi una setmana, per fi tinc uns pins prou acceptables amb nivells de detalls amb transicions manuals amb dithering per respectar el alpha scissor. També hi ha un impostor per l'ombra.
After one week of struggle, I finally have good enough pines with LODs with manual dithering transitions in order to not break the alpha pipeline. Each one also has a shadow imposter.
To whoever explained to me here on Mastodon that you can select multiple Snap Bases with shift and that you can grab specific vertices on a mesh with B after starting the grab or scale tool in Blender.
This is the most important thing I learned that never gets brought up in any of the Blender introduction guides I've seen. This saved me so many hours of pain and suffering already. 👍
I don't think you can work on a grid without these.
Did a fresh Alpine Linux (v3.24) install today and finally got around to trying out getting Blender with ROCM working under Alpine Linux. The linked article shows how to use Distrobox with Ubuntu to run Blender on an unsupported distro, even works on a musl libc distro like Alpine!
I followed the instructions but the Blender (v4.5.3 iirc) that is in the repo for that version of Ubuntu (v24.04) didn't seem to work. I downloaded the latest Blender version from blender.org (v5.1.2) and installed it in the distrobox VM and it worked perfectly!
I'm going to try to do it using a more modern rocm supported distro in the Distrobox next.
This pretty much negates the last daily driver niggle for Alpine for me... other than the sftp annoyance I posted about earlier - which I can work around easily enough.

Hoi I'm cosmix. I mostly draw and dabble a little in game dev.
I'm all in on opensource when I can and my main two tools are #krita and #blender.

#GraphicsProgramming and #Linux folk. I have questions about #OpenGL vs #vulkan
Dodgy looking websites like OpenLib.io (which appears factual, but has zero credentials which makes me suspicious) seems to have information about one being implicit (OpenGL) and the other being explicit (Vulkan) and how Vulkan is the future for GPU compute, but OpenGL is solid and old-school for graphics.
Are we at a point where Vulkan can be reliably chosen as a GPU toolset? It seems to have been around for a long time, but only recently have #Blender started offering this, and now #BitwigStudio are pushing us to use this (could explain why the latest pre-release is crashing as I have been avoiding Vulkan due to not knowing if it is reliable enough yet).
Questions: where do you get your information on things like this which comes from reliable sources? Is an older 2080ti able to run Vulkan instructions efficiently enough that I can switch over to it?
I am wary and don't like change.
Anyone had success running Distrobox (Debian/Ubuntu vm) under Alpine Linux to get Blender with Cycles/HIP support working on an Alpine host? Something I gotta try...

Blender change the Anthropic AI funding deal, with discussions planned for AI Policies https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/05/blender-change-the-anthropic-ai-funding-deal-with-discussions-planned-for-ai-policies/
I wonder how many of the people who are complaining about Blender's funding choices, have literally ever, donated literally anything, to literally any opensource project out there.
Because statistically speaking, very few of you did.

Around 5 years ago I spent some quality time trying to learn basic 3-d modeling. I produced a couple interesting images, some of which I use as desktop backgrounds now. In the one attached below I modeled 8 different objects in the Wings3d polygon modeler. Wings3d has some interesting features for creating repetitive structures that you can see on display in the image. It's also wonderfully low-tech compared to similar tools. Besides having varying shapes the objects also have varying materials. I experimented with specularity (the ones that look plastic or metallic) and transparency mainly. Several of the objects have emissive materials (they glow in the dark), but you cannot see that in this particular image.
The green plasticy thing in the lower left is especially interesting. The surface irregularity is the result of artifacts in Wings3d, not something I put there purposely. Well, I purposely pushed the tool to its limits, which led to that effect, but I didn't hand model those surface features with purpose. Because I like to hack like that.
In Blender I put a 2-d mesh underneath the objects to catch the shadows the HDRi image was creating. I recall fiddling quite a bit with that to make it look reasonably realistic. Obviously this is amateur work---among other issues the composition is pretty lousy---but I thought it came out OK as a showcase.

Reputation is one of the most valuable things any social project has. It can inspire people to do great things together.
Money is, *waves hand*, helpful; but just a thing. It's not valuable in itself, only in what things it can be transacted to get people to do for you.
If you trade inspiration for transactional power, then you no longer need to lead people, just money.
And money just isn't as valuable as people.

Finally finished the art of @JunkRaven , SEKHMET-class NHP, hanging out in her subaltern!
Here she is, chilling out at a bar/Horizon Collective clubhouse out somewhere in the Long Rim, with some of her buddies.
This one took a couple of months to finish. I don't think I've ever tried something this detailed, with so much going on in the background! (I'm bad at drawing environments.)
Layout primarily done in #Blender, poster designs done in #Inkscape, and everything else done in #Krita.
No generative AI was used to create this image.
A #blender cloth simulation, but every time it plays the cloth doubles in detail.
Watch until the end, you won't regret it...

I'm the kinda #Blender guy who goes:
This mesh for my game has a harsh edge, so I'll use a Smooth and Bevel modifier which results in worse topology and shading than if I'd do it manually, but at least it's non-destructive, making iterations I'll likely never do a few minutes faster.
If anyone who likes making #2D #animation in #Blender feels like helping a squirrel with something arguably useful for some #antifascist activists, pm me please?
