A good review of reasons insurance companies are pulling back from insuring companies that lean on generative AI. Point 4, "The main problem is not just the error, but the incentive not to see it" is especially damning: use of AI not only obscures audit trails, it sets up perverse incentives against accountability, pushing costs and risk to other parts of an organization, its customers, or society. The net result is that whatever "local" advantages AI may provide turn into downstream risk that cannot be easily accounted for. Insurance companies are (rightly) allergic to this state of affairs.

Another example of how (whole)-systems thinking is very helpful for parsing the effects of technology changes like this.

As a navigator, I've felt deskilled by satnavs. Similarly when any of my skills, like identifying constellations or trees, are usurped by machinery. Now it feels like my very talent for thinking and analysis has been devalued.

No matter how esoteric AI literature has become, and no matter how thoroughly the intellectual origins of AI's technical methods have been forgotten, the technical work of AI has nonetheless been engaged in an effort to domesticate the Cartesian soul into a technical order in which it does not belong. The problem is not that the individual operations of Cartesian reason cannot be mechanized (they can be) but that the role assigned to the soul in the larger architecture of cognition is untenable. This incompatibility has shown itself up in a pervasive and ever more clear pattern of technical frustrations. The difficulty can be shoved into one area or another through programmers' choices about architectures and representation schemes, but it cannot be made to go away.
From Phil Agre's 1995 article The Soul Gained And Lost.

If one were to continue the genealogy in this article from 1995 to present, one would find many of the same issues inherent in Cartesian dualism present in large language models. Like the STRIPS system Agre surveys, LLMs also generate sequences. They also must make choices among many available options at each step of sequence generation. They also use heuristics to guide this process that would otherwise explode intractably. The heuristics, or what Agre dubs "determining tendency", are random number generators and "guardrails" in LLMs instead of the tree-structured search of previous-generation AI systems. But otherwise the systems are structured similarly.

It's fascinating, but not coincidental, that the determining tendency of AI systems like these is so often perceived to have mystical or even God-like qualities. Breathless predictions about the endless potential of tree-structured search in early writing on GOFAI resembles modern proclamations of imminent AGI or superintelligence among generative AI boosters because both of these mechanisms---tree search or random number generation---are situated where the Cartesian soul would be. These mysterious determining tendencies, homunculuses of last resort, or souls are timeless, acausal factors that choose a single path from an infinite space of possibilities, and thereby direct the encompassing agent's behavior in an intelligent manner.

This is one reason why I posted the other day that if you removed the random number generation from LLMs, the illusion of their intelligence would more than likely quickly evaporate. You'd be excising their soul, leaving behind a zombie!

AI is closely aligned with power, and I've found a lot of people in tech have a problematic relationship with the notion of power. Tech has been an ascendant sector for awhile and is currently fusing with state power, which I think would naturally lead to people in this sector having internal conflict over what exactly they do. Also I think people with controlling personalities are drawn to the seemingly "clear", black-and-white nature of tech, where "truth" can be discerned with less ambiguity than in other areas of life. I don't get the sense from interactions I've had with people in tech that there is much introspection or circumspection about their relationship with various forms of power. Not to the extant that folks routinely grapple deeply with the power dynamics at play within this sector and its relation to the rest of society, anyway. Obviously I'm painting with broad strokes here, and I don't mean to downplay the acts of those who do grapple meaningfully with power. I'm just talking about a tendency I've observed over my own career.

I think some of the strange shifts we're seeing in high-profile folks in tech who already had authoritarian impulses---which, let's be real, is uncomfortably common among tech workers---is that they are groping for ways to embrace taking power that do not run afoul of other values they've endorsed. This really can't be done unless the person was already pretty antisocial, so we see weird behavior such as running self-serving "surveys" about AI with foregone conclusions, microaggressions and dissembling, attacks and other forms of hostility, being "one shotted" or conflating a computer program with humanness, etc. It's really a general problem, in that view, given how the US regime has shifted away from social democracy/liberalism into a much more brash, violent, and authoritarian stance. There are a variety of ways to cope with such a shift, one being to embrace it while bursting into a cloud of internal contradictions.

“We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter.” -- Sam Altman

                                From the BlackRock Infrastructure Summit

Putting aside that this is asinine, as is typical of Sam Altman, who wants this future?

To make the capitalism work here would require creating an artificial scarcity of intelligence. That immediately implies that education and publishing are both targets of this industry. Public education and public libraries would be likely casualties.

This also fits the general "enclosure of the commons" narrative that capitalist entities seem to follow. General intelligence is a commons the wealthy wish to enclose, gatekeep, and rent back to us in a degraded state.

After some research today it becomes clear that you can't have a linux system without running LLM generated code, since the linux kernel itself and also systemd has it.

Maybe not running LLM generated code becomes a niche thing like running linux-libre and libreboot. It is not something the average user can achieve.

We need a more specific approach to handle software with LLM contributions.

A potentially interesting question: how much would the appearance of sentience or intelligence that LLMs can generate for some users explode if they were forced to have deterministic output?

In principle you could add a single "freeze the random seed" toggle to any of the major chatbots, and with that setting toggled on they would always return precisely the same output for a given input. Organisms and by extension humans cannot behave like this---no matter how stereotyped an organism's response may seem, it always differs, in however small a way, from a previous response---and the LLM's illusion should immediately be obvious by contrast. But, perhaps more interestingly for the folks who do think LLMs exhibit some form of sentience or intelligence: are we really meant to believe that a random number generator is the source of sentience or intelligence? You could hook up a random number generator to a machine that is otherwise deterministic and clearly not sentient or intelligent, and it suddenly becomes so? How do you explain that?

Here is a way that I think and are generally a force against innovation, especially as they get used more and more.

TL;DR: 3 years ago is a long time, and techniques that old are the most popular in the training data. If a company like Google, AWS, or Azure replaces an established API or a runtime with a new API or runtime, a bunch of LLM-generated code will break. The people vibe code won't be able to fix the problem because nearly zero data exists in the training data set that references the new API/runtime. The LLMs will not generate correct code easily, and they will constantly be trying to edit code back to how it was done before.

This will create pressure on tech companies to keep old APIs and things running, because of the huge impact it will have to do something new (that LLMs don't have in their training data). See below for an even more subtle way this will manifest.

I am showcasing (only the most egregious) bullshit that the junior developer accepted from the , The LLM used out-of-date techniques all over the place. It was using:

                                                      • AWS Lambda Python 3.9 runtime (will be EoL in about 3 months)
                                                      • AWS Lambda NodeJS 18.x runtime (already deprecated by the time the person gave me the code)
                                                      • Origin Access Identity (an authentication/authorization mechanism that started being deprecated when OAC was announced 3 years ago)

So I'm working on this dogforsaken codebase and I converted it to the new OAC mechanism from the out of date OAI. What does my (imposed by the company) AI-powered security guidance tell me? "This is a high priority finding. You should use OAI."

So it is encouraging me to do the wrong thing and saying it's high priority.

It's worth noting that when I got the code base and it had OAI active, Python 3.9, and NodeJS 18, I got no warnings about these things. Three years ago that was state of the art.

Screenshot of a code editor. There are a bunch of CloudFormation YAML lines here, creating a CloudFront distribution. There's a pop-up warning with a red "High" badge (I assume it means high priority, not that we were smoking weed when writing this error). The description of the problem says: CloudFront Distribution Resources have an S3 Origin configured without an Origin Access Identity (OAI).
An origin access identity is a special CloudFront user identity that is used to secure access to the origin server associated with a CloudFront distribution. By enabling the cloudfront_origin_access_identity_enabled setting, you are indicating that you have configured and activated an origin access identity for your CloudFront distribution.

Something I've learned from Ruth Ben-Ghiat: aspiring authoritarians purposely engineer situations in which people are invited to give up their values and morals and make decisions that compromise their sense of right and wrong. Moral decay, moral injury, and subsequently moral collapse become so intolerable that afflicted people will blame anything else but their own choices or the leader they threw in with, which of course are the only proximate causes it would be helpful to implicate. The more compromising decisions they make, the more they are drawn into the authoritarian's orbit.

There is no question that it is indefensible to use generative AI systems as they are currently constituted, especially the commercial ones, once one becomes aware of how they are made and operated and the destructive consequences they have already had and will surely continue to have. Among the many reasons using these tools is indefensible is that they represent an authoritarian invitation. You're invited to trade your morals and ethics for a bit of convenience, a reduction in friction, a learning experience, a rhetorical flourish, or maybe (a kind of) status. You thereby align yourself more and more with people who say things like "water is fake" or "fuck earth" as they make the computer systems enabling the horrors we're watching unfold on social media. You start to tell yourself stories, complexifying stories that explain why it's OK you did this thing that you know is not OK. You move in the direction of people who are already telling themselves stories like this. Maybe their stories have superior analgesic qualities to yours.

Nobody needs to go down this path.

The fact it's rapidly made its way into warfare is not a coincidence nor a matter of economics. That's what this technology and its precursors have always been for. Economics provides a means for recruiting the entire population to produce it. Our economic activity is the means of creation of necrotechnology whose existence we then protest when it pushes beyond our comfort zone.

And I do meet ppl who think they have seen it do some impressive things. But. They always end up revealing that they think GenAI isn’t just doing things that traditionally required actual intelligence, that actually think it is intelligent. And that makes me dubious about what else they think they have seen. Because GenAI does not ‘think’, it is not ‘intelligent’. It can sometimes imitate intelligence, but it is not intelligent and if you think it is, you’ve failed to understand what it actually is doing.

Throw it into a reverse image search site and look for what the results are for the same picture. If the site shows a bunch of different images as the same, that’s a strong signal for GenAI. In these systems, an ml works, trained to find differences. Because GenAI images have a lot of technical characteristics in common, like JPEG artefacts, colour space, or texture smoothness, those look the same for these systems. This works across different GenAI models and software. My favourite tool for this check is the Yandex image search.

We survey almost 6000 CFOs, CEOs and executives from stratified firm samples across the US, UK, Germany and Australia. We find four key facts. First, around 70% of firms actively use AI, particularly younger, more productive firms. Second, while over two thirds of top executives regularly use AI, their average use is only 1.5 hours a week, with one quarter reporting no AI use. Third, firms report little impact of AI over the last 3 years, with over 80% of firms reporting no impact on either employment or productivity. Fourth, firms predict sizable impacts over the next 3 years, forecasting AI will boost productivity by 1.4%, increase output by 0.8% and cut employment by 0.7%. We also survey individual employees who predict a 0.5% increase in employment in the next 3 years as a result of AI. This contrast implies a sizable gap in expectations, with senior executives predicting reductions in employment from AI and employees predicting net job creation.

We just found out our Al has been making up
analytics data for 3 months and I'm gonna
throw up.

So we've been using an Al agent since November to
answer leadership questions about metrics. It seemed
amazing at first fast answers, detailed explanations,
everyone loved it.

| just found out it's been hallucinating numbers this
entire time.

Our VP of sales made territory decisions based on
data that didn't exist. Our CFO showed the board a
deck with fake insights. The Al was just inventing
plausible sounding percentages.

I only caught it by accident when someone asked me
to double check something. | started digging, and
holy shit, it's bad.

Consistency lets you write something once and know it will work the same way indefinitely. This is a huge force multiplier and the main way computers have transformed society.

Encapsulation lets you decompose a complex system into predictable, independent pieces, allowing reuse and more complex programs.

                                                                                                                                          Chat-prompt "programming" breaks both.

Strings of symbols on the printed page mean what they do in virtue of conventional associations between them and words of language. Numerals of various sorts represent the numbers they do in virtue of social agreements and practices. The representational capacity of orthography is in this way derived from the representational capacities of cognitive agents. By contrast, the cognitive states in normal cognitive agents do not derive their meanings from conventions or social practices.

Getting the whole argument just right is fiddly, but the basic idea is this. You feed some kind of theory into the AM/AS, which is a black box. It churns on this and spits out a result, which is added to the theory (I'm neglecting the case that the result is inconsistent with the theory). It can now churn on theory + result 1. For any given and potentially very large N, after doing this long enough, it's churning on theory + result 1 + result 2 + ... + result N. Whatever it spits out will be dependent in particular on results 1 - N. When N is large enough, unless you know these results you will not be able to understand what it outputs because the output will almost surely depend critically on one or more of results 1 - N. In other words, the output will look like noise to you. If the AM/AS is appreciably faster at producing results than people are at understanding them, there will be an N beyond which no one can understand the output up to that point. It'll become indistinguishable (unable to be distinguished) from random noise.

If you're into software development, this would be analogous to a software system that generates syntactically-correct code and then adds that code as a new call in a growing software library. If you were to run this long enough, virtually all the programs it generated that were short enough for human beings to have any hope of reading and understanding would consist almost entirely of library calls to code generated by the system. You'd have no idea what any of this code did unless you studied the library calls, which you wouldn't be able to do beyond a certain scale. If the system were expanding the library faster than you could read and understand it, there'd be no hope at all.

I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader whether this is a desirable thing to do and whether it's happened yet. I would offer, though, a question to ponder: what reason is there to believe that a random number generator hooked up to an inscrutable interpreter produces human flourishing, for any given meaning of "human flourishing" you care to use?

This time the trees have all lost their leaves, the grassy areas are dull and muddy, and there are rain puddles on the pathways. And because the trees are leafless the uninspiring buildings behind the park are far more visible, they had previously been drawn in pastel colours to de-emphasise them on the architects' version.

Oh, and because the weather is lousy there are no people in the park at all.

AI technology is evolving rapidly and detection is imperfect. We are realistic about the challenges and limitations that exist, while remaining committed to doing our part.

Our editorial and human-curation will remain 100% human. Every Qobuzissime, Album of the Week, playlist, article, and review comes from our team of music experts. This will not change.

Our recommendations highlight human artists. The Discover page features recommendations sourced exclusively from curated data, either through human editorial curation or curated metadata from trusted partners. These sources filter out AI-generated tracks, ensuring human artists’ visibility and fair compensation.

When we identify fraudulent streams, we exclude them from reporting and royalty statements.

We are in the process of developing detection and monitoring systems to identify AI-generated content and fraudulent streaming patterns. We are collaborating with industry partners to build sustainable and effective solutions together.

                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Though too many clearly still suffer too much, a large proportion of people live free from fear of starvation or lack of shelter
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • The US has deindustralized, meaning hard physical labor is not the reality for a lot of people. For a lot of people labor is emotional or symbolic (“knowledge work”)
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • In other words, for lots of people the economic promise has been fulfilled
                                                                                                                                                                                                          3. Having to think hard is one of the service economy’s analogs for hard physical labor. If the promise of economics is to be continually pursued--meaning it maintains the promise that if we collectively submit to it, in exchange we will enjoy a freedom--a natural target of the promise is providing freedom from the need to think hard
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • It is not coincidental that “Gas Town”’s announcement post mentioned Towers of Hanoi, an undergraduate CS student homework problem that for most students requires thinking hard. It’s designed to encourage a kind of “eureka” moment where recursion as a computer programming technique becomes more clear. GT claims to fulfill the promise of not having to think hard like this anymore: the LLMs will do that thinking for you
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • It is not coincidental that Gas Town is described as being very expensive. Economic power in the form of asset accumulation is what earns you freedom in this way of conceiving things. If you want the freedom from having to think hard, you’d better accumulate assets
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Since the promise is greater collective freedom, endeavoring to accumulate assets is, in this view, a collective good
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • This differs from effective altruism and other “do good by doing well” conceptions. Rather, the very mechanism of economics produces collective wealth, so the story goes, which means the more active one is as an economic agent, the more collective good one produces (“wealth” and “good” being conflated)
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Accumulation of assets is the scorecard, so to speak, of such enhanced economic activity, and the individual reward can then be freedom from having to think hard
                                                                                                                                                                                                          4. Expending significant resources is viewed as a good in itself from a (naive) evolutionary perspective
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Lotka’s maximum power principle (supposedly) dictates that those entities that transform the most power into useful organization are most fit from an evolutionary standpoint
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • Ernst Juenger’s notion of “total mobilization” brings this principle to politics/political economy/geopolitics: those nations that “totally” mobilize their national resources are the ones that will dominate geopolitically
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • See, for instance, the RAND Corporation’s Commission on the National Defense Strategy: “The Commission finds that the U.S. military lacks both the capabilities and the capacity required to be confident it can deter and prevail in combat. It needs to do a better job of incorporating new technology at scale; field more and higher-capability platforms, software, and munitions; and deploy innovative operational concepts to employ them together better.” (emphasis mine). In summary: the US is about to be outcompeted (lacks fitness); in response, it should go big (“at scale”, “more”) in an organized way (“deploy innovative operational concepts”, “employ them together better”)
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • The rhetoric around LLM-based AI includes similar language, exemplified in the GT post: burn through as much infrastructural resources as possible to produce organized outputs “at scale”, while avoiding having human beings think too hard to produce those outputs, an indication that the power was burned to produce useful organization
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • LLM-based AI plays a prominent role in US federal government strategy, particularly military strategy, with language about dominance serving to justify its use
                                                                                                                                                                                                          • It is not coincidental that Gas Town uses many orders of magnitude more resources to solve the Towers of Hanoi problem (“Burn All The Gas” Town). This rhetoric dovetails perfectly with the “total mobilization” concept

How about for models without web access, though. Have any professionals seen data poisoning attacks used to cause a model to distribute or attacks? Or to generate subtly back-doored or deliberately vulnerable code?

I expect that will be patched out.

It means that guardrails will threaten to bring the whole house of cards down any time LLMs are exposed to attacker-supplied input. It's that silly magic string today, but tomorrow it might be an attacker padding their exploit with a request for contraband like nudes or bomb-making instructions, blinding any downstream intrusion detection tech that relies on LLMs. Guess an input string that triggers a guardrail and win a free false negative for a prize. And you can't exactly rip out the guardrails in response because that would create its own set of problems.
