Neocities, the Bing Mess and the Good Old Internet

Today we dive into how good the old web used to be and how Neocities is bringing that back in all the right ways. Now, if only Microsoft could get out of their way and stop delisting them from Bing for arbitrary policies that they won't even define, that would be greeeeat. Maybe it's time to try out Kagi since Orion is already on the docket.

More logical navigation through Word documents for screen readers

There is a new setting (now in Office 365) which "allows you to use the up and down arrow keys to move through all the content in your document based on the logical reading order." - this will be a big improvement for situations including:
      - Multi-column pages
      - Text wrapped around images
      - multi-page view

I got Windows NT 4.0 running with Service Pack 6a incl. drivers and all the latest updates from 1999 and even managed to install a few games: Windows Entertainment Pack, SimCity Classic and Age of Empires II. This is quite nice! Although I remember from back in the day that NT 4.0 only supported a very limited selection of games. That's why I always used it as part of a dual-boot setup with Windows 9x.

Now you don’t have to worry about your digital files being lost on an old hard drive. Microsoft Research has taken Project Silica out of the lab and turned it into a real system that uses regular glass. They use special lasers to write data into borosilicate glass, creating a storage medium that can last for 10,000 years. This is more than just an experiment; they’ve already stored 4.8 terabytes on a piece of glass about the size of a drink coaster.

What’s most impressive is how tough this storage is. You could put these glass slabs in boiling water or even a microwave, and the data would still be safe. Because glass doesn’t need power to keep the data intact, it’s possible to create huge archives that don’t use any electricity for cooling or upkeep. This could mean the end of the Digital Dark Age.

🧠 One glass slab holds 4.8 terabytes of permanent data.
⚡ Lasers etch 301 layers of data into 2mm of glass.
🎓 Borosilicate glass reduces the cost of archival storage.
🔍 Accelerated aging tests prove the data lasts 10 millennia.

Hey team! It's been a bit quiet over the last 24 hours, but we've got a couple of noteworthy updates: Microsoft's re-release of a critical Windows 11 hotpatch addressing RCE flaws, and the launch of Betterleaks, a promising new open-source tool for secrets scanning.

Windows 11 Hotpatch for RRAS RCE 🛡️

                                                    - Microsoft has re-released an out-of-band (OOB) hotpatch (KB5084597) for Windows 11 Enterprise devices, targeting three Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-25172, CVE-2026-25173, CVE-2026-26111) in the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) management tool.
                                                    - These flaws could allow an authenticated attacker to achieve RCE by tricking a domain-joined user into connecting to a malicious server via the RRAS Snap-in.
                                                    - The hotpatch is specifically for devices enrolled in the hotpatch update program and managed via Windows Autopatch, offering crucial fixes without requiring a system reboot, which is vital for mission-critical environments.

Betterleaks: The Next-Gen Secrets Scanner 🛠️

                                                    - Betterleaks is a new open-source tool designed to scan directories, files, and Git repositories for sensitive secrets like credentials and API keys, aiming to be a more advanced successor to the popular Gitleaks.
                                                    - Developed by Zach Rice, the original author of Gitleaks, Betterleaks introduces features such as rule-defined validation using CEL, token efficiency scanning (boasting 98.6% recall), a pure Go implementation, and parallelised Git scanning for improved performance.
                                                    - Future plans for the project include support for additional data sources, LLM-assisted analysis for better secret classification, automatic secret revocation via provider APIs, and optimisations for AI-generated code workflows.

Die einzelnen Komponenten arbeiten überhaupt nicht zusammen und alles ist nur auf die Mail-Infrastruktur von Exchange aufgepfropft. Und die Webapps von Office will niemand verwenden.
