CNN: Cuba’s power system suffers total collapse
https://lite.cnn.com/2026/03/16/world/cuba-power-grid-collapse-intl-latam
I guess it is fair to say that the greatest #curse I have ever witnessed #placed on someone, is the #power of giving up, and/or #failure at the first sign of a #true #challenge as such.
To undo it, you have to just #try again. And in that #moment you realize that #success is #empowered to find you again, after asking to ensure you're still there and committed to hold the balance of power elsewhere by the same #commitment in turn.
I just got called a #Nazi by someone who mentioned me in a post then later deleted it.
So I will call that person a #coward because they can't stand by their convictions the way the Nazis did.
Name calling is so over rated and stupid. Insecure people shouldn't have to be able to influence diversion like this on a constant basis.
this exact response is the reason why centralized platforms target you now.
Here's a fact for you guys.
#Hitlerian ideology existed far longer than the #European attempted #colonization of everything into a #German #Reich which effectively makes #Nazism prone to regional difference, all be it one with the potential #historical #power to have long lasting consequences on the people who at the time, didn't see it coming as satellite states emerged from it.
So let's face it. I'm not #German I'm #Canadian and speak #English and no other #language as such.
For anyone who really wants to know, the term #neonazi exists for people who #self-identify as being simpathetic to Hitlerian doctrine.
I've #studied this extensively, because I think in a lot of ways, we never concluded #WWII completely from the #human #psyche and that is very frustrating to see this #tribal resurgence come back into #living #memory again.
So let's say that the year is 1940 something and not 2020 something. And let's point out the fact, that #National #Communism is an idea that got exported 80 some odd years into the #future to now.
Even if that's the case, the world has changed a lot since that time. And we've gotten stupider as a result of being primarily lazy with our own ambitions.
This is how dumb you guys are for doing this. And I know what you try to #suggest as such. That we are in such a #state of irreparable #disagreement, that this is the best you can come up with to #distance yourself from any sort of wider #context that doesn't fit your #narrative of #people who disagree with you.
So what? Can we not have an honest conversation about a few things without making solutions barred by political disconnectivity? That's exactly what the Nazi's proposed to do accept their solution wasn't just silence, it was death and destruction on a scale that has never truly went away ever since subsequent governments around our world, came into power and upgraded weapons systems continuously while operating elite networks from the shadows. In an effort, to instigate things like the #world #economic #forum and other big #thinktank organizations into a much broader sense of hostility than any of us individually call for as citizens of any and every nation.
I will say it loudly and #proudly as such. I am not someone who wants any group of people to face a premature end of their life on this planet, based on factors that nobody can control. And even if we can, I still want us to live our lives unimpeded by political #violence of any kind. And that includes #faith based groups to get along within #community spaces that do not challenge monomorphic #dominance at every step of the way.
I am disgusted at the #tribalism going on infecting every aspect of a normal #life facing my generation. And to just throw words like this out there, without any existential #planning or forethought on how this entire wretched #ideology can finally meet the dustbin of #history as such, to put it to #rest has no basis in #reality at all.
Look. I'm against people controling my life in ways I don't want them to. But that's true for all of us. So if you're going to name call, just remember that not everyone will take that lying down with a straight face and not move a mustle in the direction of a #fighting stance your way afterward.
I will not react in that manner, because I do put #peace and #prosperity first. And I don't censor people if they have opposing views to my own. But that's me. It's not you, and if you're that much of a coward to the point where you essentially do the same thing, only after you #feel #safe behind a cyber void, all the power to you.
But I bring this up publicly because reputations like this, although they're not supposed to, they actually do effect how highly you rank as a content provider. And on a shared internet, that carries more weight than you might think. Especially in today's toxic divided world where prayer is so much needed more so than ignorance and stupidity, where none can be found.
I don't want to live in a world where people start literally weaponizing eternity over a personal choice of faith. Nor do I want to live in one, where not choosing faith of any kind, let alone mandated ones, will land you as a person who is a continuous victim of statelessness by your actual neighbor in kind.
The Abrahamic religions are a perfect example (one of many in context) that have done more harm to divide people, than any other group in human history combined. And I am not one to book ban, but if those religions want to continue spewing their vile trash all over the place, it's time to set a precedent. But even still, that requires rethinking your approach to lead by example, and not paying attention to the example someone else can't lead by. Which again, makes book banning, the thing the Nazi's did, utterly archaic and barbaric to me
Wake up people. We don't live in a world that's so hard done by, that it can't be repaired. And it starts with refusing to use a tool at your disposal against someone you barely even had words with, because you can.
The only way you'll learn discernment, is by understanding this as a core concept. I have all the tools at my disposal as a server instance owner to really stick it to people if I choose to. But so too does the US government own nuclear weapons to stick it to us if they chose to. And I count my blessings every time I wake up, and we haven't regressed that far into mass destruction to which there is no return. So likewise, because and due to that, I practice discernment out of choice, even when I can legally get away with being a lot harsher. I do not do so out of pity, but out of respect.
So let's take a second and thank the Nazi's for coming into our lives. Not for their ideology, or their vile addiction to power and hatred. But because they taught us, to be better people to not be like them because they failed at suppressing the human spirit.
I don't want to see you pull some shit online you wouldn't in get away with in real life. Not because I want you to be oppressed, but because the more we treat our communities like bridges connecting real people together, the less likely we'll respond to situations with outlandish and stupid methods of containment until and unless we have no other choice but to defend against systematic collapse.
Please know the power of your presence and use it. I don't want to have to be the only one who does. I'm fully aware that I'm not in control of what someone else does. But so long as they're not doing something to you that you wouldn't want, let them be and move on. That's what being responsible gets you in 2026.
I wish I didn't have to spell this out. But honestly, what hurts me more so than the accusation of something that isn't even real. Is that, you use that as a justification to do something that is real, with lasting consequences on not just reputation, but disinterest without a trail of provocation to go along with it. It'd be not unlike setting your neighborhood ablaze because the pizza delivery guy was 5 minutes late.
If this kind of antisocial behaviour isn't course corrected, our 30 something year old generation will be the last to have known the meaning of true freedom as we know it, because people like you, will get more attention by being underhanded, rather than straight up and honest about where we stand. And as such, would force the natural rather than enforced suppression of sudden unpredictability, back where it rightfully belongs. In the could have been moments of our lives, but not in the never were enactments of them.
Or in other words, focusing on the self you become not as a hot headed entity, or a cold calculating monster. But the one in between, that sees both sides, and not just the one you embody because you think it's going to matter to a fault, rather than a cause.
Stay informed, and know you are not alone in caring for the same things I do. History doesn't always get things right, but that's why we talk about it, rather than remaining silent and hoping it goes away on its own.
For some situations, that can happen. But this isn't one of them.
Thank you for all that you are. I appreciate you.
I am writing an open #letter to all #political sides as an #introduction to #hope I wish to turn #hurt away from and closer into as such through #affirmative #action accordingly if at all possible.
Let me start out by saying, that I #believe in the #power of real human prayer as #unbound #energy finding its way through us. And in turn, I'm no #religious #person by and large, but I am going to send this #prayer out there anyways because I feel it needs to be #said as is.
This will be a prayer covering several #topics of conversation that I #feel are important and significant enough to relay as one broadcast.
To all #people I #pray that:
You realize living on your own #political #island sounds great in theory, be it on the #left or the #right of the spectrum. Or even at the #top or #bottom of it as well. But being unable to find or care for the #center of it, leaves you #vulnerable to #attack more so than anything else. And that is not a state of things I #desire for you to have to #live by.
I pray that:
As #individuals you #collectively and #personally #understand that there are differences between the #perception of how you come across to others, and how others #perceive you in turn. It is okay to have a #difference of opinion, but to be #blind sighted by this, leaves you open to being #weaponized and I do not #wish that for you to have to #experience at all.
#sovereignty
I pray that:
You can #recognize how someone wants to be able to experience #respect without having to diverge or divulge your #interest in a #potential #conflict as such. In order for us to be able to #trust each other, we have to #remember how to #treat one another as #equals rather than constantly #competing for #dominance based on denying that there #exists a spectrum of #agreeability at play that we are all apart of.
#CommonSense
I pray that:
We keep building upon #frameworks that do not need to become a totally separate #foundation that exists just to serve you. But rather, exist as #modular #blocks that can join and detach from one another as already built #structures full and complete. This way, we are not trying to conflict over what block we have to share space with someone else in prioritizing. Because the entire thing is ours to shape in our own way. And so as a #metaphor, I feel it is #important to attach to the idea of having a sense in common, as opposed to a common sense where applicable, of things that cause us to #fight over how #relevant it is to most of us around the #actual or #planned #change currently in motion.
#battles
I pray that:
We are able to tell when to be #still and when to #move upon any #focus that #captivates us in part. Whether it exists as apart of a #whole or not. Doing so will help us make the best #impact #possible for the change we want to make a #reality for the #cause we are #concerned for.
And ultimately, I pray that we can move past the blatant need to have an #existential #crisis be on full display at the #crossroads of #agendas being carried out as they are each in turn, #instigated by #georegional #tribalism that serves nobody accept to put #humanity as a whole last, not first, as I intend to do.
All of these things are #real and can be #fixable and #doable as such. And I want to make sure, that this reality does not have a chance to get far out of #control the way it currently has.
For it is #outcomes like this, that #incomes should never have appropriately #manifested into #place that I want to #avoid and keep #preventable from ever #happening again.
To me, I find it very #unfortunate that we are living through #times of such blatant #hardship that should not have to be so unnecessary in today's day and age. For in this latest #protest #style #news #video we see this very inteersection of mounting, preventable #activities #culminating all at once in a display of #violent #behaviour best #repurposed for other #interests in my #opinion acordingly.

In #America #israel and #Canada or anywhere else in our #world we should not have to worry about #migration #problems at home #effecting the #symptom of #indifference at the #core of #ineffective #deference as such. Rather, if we simply #agree to #adapt our time towards #focusing on the #things we can #bear #witness to as our own #personal #legacy then I say we have done enough for our #community be it or we tied to a particular #faith or not.
I say this, in my own #human name for all it is worth. Because that is who I am now, and if any #guardian #angel believes this to be #true then all I ask, is that you add yours to this prayer and pass it forward.
Thank you for your #attention to this #matter as such. I #appreciate it and you very much for the #blessing that you are.
I think some of the strange shifts we're seeing in high-profile folks in tech who already had authoritarian impulses---which, let's be real, is uncomfortably common among tech workers---is that they are groping for ways to embrace taking power that do not run afoul of other values they've endorsed. This really can't be done unless the person was already pretty antisocial, so we see weird behavior such as running self-serving "surveys" about AI with foregone conclusions, microaggressions and dissembling, attacks and other forms of hostility, being "one shotted" or conflating a computer program with humanness, etc. It's really a general problem, in that view, given how the US regime has shifted away from social democracy/liberalism into a much more brash, violent, and authoritarian stance. There are a variety of ways to cope with such a shift, one being to embrace it while bursting into a cloud of internal contradictions.
People who hate wind generated power and solar energy always start talking about how those are "bad for birds" like that talking point from the 90's would have ever been relevant. These same people also never fight exessive logging, never support biodiversity even in their own yards, or help local birds in any way.
If you care about birds -save forests.
Tech has evolved and birds are more aware of the windfarm blades than you are of your surroundings.
In this #HotTake I explore the idea that #authoritarianism and #communism are not the same thing.
To cling to authority, means to give your #power of decision making away to somebody else.
To prioritize a particular group of people, in a community, means to give them the first deal available that's close at hand.
“Iran is a country of 92 million people with a 2,500-year-old civilization that once rivaled the ancient Greeks and Romans. Its historical self-image is that of a major civilizational #power, not a peripheral state that can be pressured by other countries.”

The secretive network offers a glimpse into just how central one of the world’s richest men, who has a net worth of more than $650 billion, has made #Texas to his operations & ambitions. More than 50 of his at least 90 companies there are subsidiaries or other entities affiliated with his #business #empire, such as the rocket company #SpaceX & the electric vehicle maker #Tesla, as well as his nonprofit #Musk Foundation.
The Times’s examination also offers a window into how #Musk used private #companies to support #Trump during the 2024 #election. Tapping these companies to cover the expenses of a #superPAC is “highly unusual”, #CampaignFinance experts said, & ended up obscuring how #money was being spent because they are not subject to the disclosure requirements of super PACs.
Marcin Romanowski, the former deputy justice minister in the right-wing Polish government, is in hiding in Hungary, accused of misusing public funds. The former #PrinceAndrew — #AndrewMountbattenWindsor — became the first member of the British #royal family in several centuries to be arrested; he’s been accused of crimes related to his relationship with the late #SexTrafficking financier Jeffrey #Epstein.
They’re all unfortunate not to be “American”. Otherwise they probably would have gotten away scot-free.
One way to look at the rise of Donald #Trump is as part of a decades-long backlash among the American leadership class to the idea of #accountability. Since Richard #Nixon was forced to resign, powerful people in both political parties have worked assiduously to ensure that their leaders would escape the consequences of their actions.
#Trump has evaded punishment for #crimes both low (campaign-finance violations, for which he was #convicted, though he will serve no time thanks to his 2024 victory) & high (his attempted overthrow of the federal government in the aftermath of his #2020election loss, for which he was spared by #SCOTUS’ decision to grant him a kingly #immunity).
This is not just about #Trump; his #impunity is the product of a society that has worked hard to help the #rich & #powerful elude punishment for #criminal behavior.
Gerald #Ford pardoned his predecessor [#Nixon] in the name of “healing,” but inadvertently set a precedent that executive lawbreaking was no #crime.
The #Reagan admin engaged in blatant violations of federal #law during the #IranContra scandal, in which it sold weapons to the #Iran regime & used the finances to support anti-communist death squads in #Nicaragua. George H. W. #Bush, the former head of the #CIA, pardoned nearly all of the officials implicated in Iran-Contra—a move that many Americans supported, because they believed that fighting communism justified extreme measures.
George W. #Bush’s admin broke laws fighting the “War on Terror” but almost no one faced consequences, because many Americans believed that fighting terrorism justified extreme measures.
Bill #Clinton lied under oath, was impeached, & then was acquitted—& many Americans supported that too, because they sympathized with lying about infidelity.
After that, #Congress decided in bipartisan fashion that it had had enough of special counsels sniffing around the #ExecutiveBranch. Barack #Obama pledged to look forward & not backwards, not only closing the door on prosecutions for executive lawbreaking but also failing to hold accountable those responsible for the 2008 financial crisis & the ensuing #GreatRecession.
While #Congress & the presidency have been working hard to raise the #ExecutiveBranch above the #law, #SCOTUS has done its part to ensure that laws against #bribery & #corruption are near-unenforceable. With a series of rulings on #CampaignFinance, the #JohnRoberts Court has ensured that the #rich can try to buy #elections without formally breaking the law. As a result, #politicians are #indebted to a few hundred #billionaires who drop unholy amounts of cash every #election cycle.
Such erosion of anti-#corruption #law has often been a bipartisan project. In 2016, the #bribery conviction of fmr VA Gov Bob McDonnell for receiving gifts from donors was overturned unanimously by #SCOTUS. Since then, the #JohnRoberts Court has slowly dismantled anti-corruption law. In 2024, it decided in Snyder v. United States that federal law does not bar receiving “gratuities” given after the fact for “official acts.”
Convenient not just for politicians, but also for justices who enjoy lavish lifestyles funded by #billionaires with interests before #SCOTUS!
The logic of the #JohnRoberts Court’s quest to legalize white-collar #crime led to #Trump v. United States, which decided in 2024 that the president is basically entitled to commit whatever #crimes he wants in the course of his “official duties,”
Which successfully shields #Trump & potentially future presidents from federal #criminal prosecution for any “official” actions while in office. This was comically framed by #SCOTUS’ right-wing justices as protecting #democracy, rather than undermining it.
Although some of these decisions were more defensible than others, together they suggest a pattern of #elite class solidarity: powerful people making sure that powerful people rarely face real consequences.
The #MeToo & Black Lives Matter [#BLM] movements can be seen as, at least partially, a brief rebellion against this culture of #elite #impunity. Left with few formal avenues for redress, large numbers of people demanded that the powerful—bosses & celebrities who had used their status to coerce others into sexual relationships, or police officers who had used their authority to kill without consequence—be made to pay a price for hurting others.
An echo of that earlier outrage followed the revelations of the #EpsteinFiles, though this round has so far been diverted into mutual partisan recrimination, more than the focus on institutional changes that characterized those earlier movements.
This is not to say that the rich & powerful are never held to account. #BobMenendez is one counterexample, & #Epstein himself was a #billionaire who died in a jail cell, after all.
But #Epstein’s #crimes were taken seriously by authorities only after the #journalist #JulieBrown uncovered the extent of his crimes & the lenient response from law enforcement over decades.
Unfortunately, many Americans who might have been outraged at this edifice of #impunity have instead directed their resentment toward the #poor & #weak, supporting a cruel & unforgiving system of #criminal “justice” that harshly punishes those at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder while exempting many at the top from any #accountability at all.
So you did a few death-squad massacres or wedding bombings? Well, that was what America’s leaders had to do to fight communism & terrorism. You can even take a sack of cash from an undercover FBI agent if you’re the #Trump #immigration czar #TomHoman. But if you overstayed your #visa or got an #abortion, you deserve to have the book thrown at you.
#Trump himself can be seen as benefiting from a backlash against #accountability in the last place powerful people in America seem to face it∶ the court of public opinion. Trump, & other powerful figures, made the public an offer∶ Let us get away with what we want to do, & you will too.

tl;dr: This #video adds to what #TimothySnyder wrote in the addendum to #OnTyranny.
It's not that I disbelieved Timothy Snyder; it's that I listened to the #audiobook of On Tyranny when the rest of my bookclub read the physical book.
That audiobook had an entire bonus section with an additional twenty points centering #Ukraine. Timothy Snyder shared that he'd written these down the previous evening. I was not prepared to communicate about the additional material because it was seriously as long or longer than the original book. I'm sure there's an expanded version out there by now, but as an audiobook listener, I'll let y'all go find it.
Aside: When a random new-to-me channel shows up in my #YouTube feed, I check when it joined. If it's too recent, I pass, regardless of the content. This channel started in 2017.
Today, I was served the random video linked above that ties into Snyder's Ukraine content.
This video affirms everything Snyder said, and adds context like the difference between the #Russian and #Ukrainian #words associated with #power. Like the words for #money and #treasury. Being reminded that #Russia has #Mongol roots added the piece I was missing.
Repeal of the #EndangermentFinding would remove the regulatory requirements to measure, report, certify, & comply with federal #GreenhouseGas emission standards for cars, but may not initially apply to stationary sources such as power plants, officials told the Wall Street Journal earlier this week.
The transportation & #power sectors are each responsible for around a quarter of #US greenhouse gas output, according to #EPA figures.
The #EndangermentFinding by the #Obama admin is the legal underpinning of nearly all #climate #regulations under the #CleanAirAct for motor vehicles, power plants & other #pollution sources that are heating the planet.
#Legal challenges are certain for an action that repeals all #GreenhouseGas #emissions standards for cars & trucks, & could unleash a broader undoing of climate regulations on stationary sources such as #power plants & #oil & #gas facilities, experts say.

We will not achieve any of our ultimate goals without exercising state power, and the most effective way to take state power is through nonviolent but confrontational resistance.
You start out of power. You win a war of mass politics—you get enough of the mass of people to support your cause—and this carries you in to state power, which you use to consolidate and further that political project.

Working with vintage power today from the early 1990's when my career started. The newer motor drives are a small fraction of this size. Most of the bulk is magnetic chokes and capacitive resistive snubbers filtering the voltage spikes from the semiconductor triacs. The other half of the cabinet, not shown, are even more massive transformer filters. We are documenting why this motor drive has failed increasingly over the last several months. The motor it powers is only 150 horsepower, or about 110 kilowatts.

PC prediction, slightly going out on a limb: with 12VHPWR / 12V2x6 connectors still melting, PC power supplies and high-end GPUs will switch to using a higher voltage to feed the extremely power-hungry beasts. Probably 24V, but they could go higher.
With the cards already doing DC-DC conversion down to much lower voltages for the GPU and memory, there's no need to stick with 12V, and doubling the voltage will allow them to cut the current needed in half -- and since it's the high current levels that is causing all the thermal issues, it's an obvious fix.

Over the past two decades, the Roberts Court has pioneered and perfected the practice: #Sanewashing
—defined as “attempting to minimize or downplay a person or idea’s radicality to make it more palatable to the general public”
—It has become a prominent, if entirely underappreciated, feature of the Roberts Court.
Relying on judicial sanewashing, the Roberts Court has ERODED:
#due #process protections,
political #accountability,
and civil rights,
while simultaneously #consolidating #power for itself, corporations, gun owners, Christian conservatives, and state officials who owe their political influence to heavily gerrymandered districts.
All this has been accomplished while the Roberts Court has sought to present itself as a neutral, nonpartisan institution, free from corporate interests and policy preferences and guided solely by constitutional and democratic principles.
As the Roberts Court has transformed into a #conservative policymaking body, it has maintained that it is merely fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
The judicially sanewashed opinions of the Roberts Court haven’t been limited solely to sanewashing the law;
-- Often, they also involve extensive sanewashing of the facts too.
For example, in tandem with whitewashing the anti-racist purpose of the Reconstruction Amendments in Shelby County v. Holder,
the Roberts Court also recast former Confederate states subject to the #Voting #Rights #Act, or VRA, as aggrieved and mistreated, and in need of legal protection by the Court.
According to the sanewashed facts in Shelby County, the VRA was no longer necessary because racially discriminatory voting practices were “rare”
and the remaining sections of the statute would be sufficient to protect minority voting rights.
In the decade since the Court offered those tepid reassurances,
states formerly subject to the VRA’s preclearance requirements have passed an avalanche of discriminatory #voter #suppression laws
as the Roberts Court has simultaneously sought to further weaken the law.
🆘 The Court is now prepared to strike down the remaining vestiges of the statute it promised would remain in place to ensure voting rights remained protected.
Similarly, when sanewashing the First Amendment to recognize new speech rights by corporations to engage in unlimited political spending in #Citizens #United,
the Roberts Court tried to assure a skeptical public that dismantling decades of campaign finance regulations would strengthen the integrity of elections and allow voters to hold officials accountable.
🔥Fifteen years later, the ruling has unleashed a torrent of unregulated corporate spending in American politics,
enabling #superPACs to raise limitless funds from corporations
and undisclosed donors to exercise an outsized influence on election results.
⭐️Between 2010 and 2024, political spending by super PACs grew from $62.6 million to $4.1 billion.
Americans are so disgusted with #darkmoney in politics that an overwhelming majority supports a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.ERO

It's late and I'm tired but unsleepable, and I spent the last 2 hours doing something I hate, so I will tell you about #assessment in #highered (in the USA). I'm extrapolating from personal knowledge of 2 universities' practices and hearsay about a few other places.
It's bullshit. Much of it, anyway. This is not an exaggeration.
Accrediting agencies, university systems, and other bodies want to see assessments. Administrators (presidents, provosts, deans, and the increasing cloud of quasis around them) want to see assessments, too. The big problems I see (caveat: I'm wrong sometimes) are embedded in the fact that (contrary to popular belief) almost all American public colleges and universities are not controlled by professors; they are authoritarian institutions controlled by suit-wearing, corporate-cosplaying middle-managers. This leads (because reasons) to a management-vs-labor dynamic.
For administrators, assessment is not about understanding processes or outcomes; it is about control of the university (especially the faculty, who tend to get uppity and think that they should have a say in things just because they know stuff about stuff) and career management. The last point is not remotely independent from the first, BTW; higher ed admins' careers options are impacted heavily by how hard they knock faculty heads.
Result: assessment is not about assessment at all, but anyone who says this out loud runs headfirst into authoritarian power games. Institution-level assessment is about power.
One big area of assessment is the ubiquitous General Education program (i.e., the "liberal arts" curriculum in which engineers have to take a philosophy class and aspiring writers have to take a math class). The schools of which I have knowledge all do the following:
General education programs theoretically serve university "mission statements" etc., which have become so vague and stuffed with business-speak in recent years that they are nearly meaningless. However, they still tend to have some language about "success" or "skills" or "critical thinking" or similar. These things can be assessed. Perhaps a good way to demonstrate how assessment works is to show how I tried to influence assessment of these things at one institution.
I'm an Assessment Person. I'm not the most skilled and knowledgeable psychometrician in the world, but I am a psychometrician. I have a PhD that says "Psychology and also statistics with a focus on stuff like psychometrics or whatever." This, I have found, makes me more qualified to do all things educational-assessment-related than 99% of other employees at the average American college. Of course, my big head as I figured this out and my stats-specific imposter syndrome faded led me to bonk directly into an unspoken but firm rule of administrators at universities: Never let a faculty member contribute to anything of operational importance.
After a year or two at a particular school I volunteered to be on the Gen Ed Assessment Committee for our brand new gen ed program, which was hammered out by dozens of faculty over three years or so, with administrators over their shoulders and fingers on the scales at every turn. Well, I know some things about how to assess stuff when human behavior is involved, so it was a cool gig.
What followed was a year of meetings with three other faculty and one vice-provost. The VP was the chair of the committee and the rest were appointed, not elected. I spent many hours parsing our committee's charge, the university's mission and values statements, and the voluminous literature about educational assessment. I prepared briefs, made suggestions, etc.
You see, it's pretty goddamn simple (not the same as easy, but not that hard): If your gen ed program's mission statement says it will increase critical thinking in students, you get a fucking critical thinking assessment (there are a few pretty decent ones) and you fucking give it to the fucking students. You can do a longitudinal study, assessing students at various points in their college experience. You can do a cross-sectional thing where you assess a bunch of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students all at once. You can get fancy and do a cross-lagged design. You can get picky and weird with the methdology, but it's not that fucking hard.
I didn't understand the problems with this approach. They included (but probably were not limited to) the following. This kind of assessment...
So I spent a year working my ass off, not quite understanding (but beginning to suspect) why all my suggestions (e.g., "We want to know about skills. What if we measure skills?") were ignored or sometimes pointedly shot down. After a year, the committee was disbanded with no final report and no meeting minutes (another suggestion that got me some surprisingly hostile responses). There is no record, as far as I know, of anything we did. A year or two later, that same administrator announced the "faculty-led" assessment system we have now, which bears no resemblance to anything we discussed in that committee, let alone my suggestions.
The system we have now is this:
Every instructor of a gen ed course comes up with their own assessment of 3 to 6 learning outcomes. The learning outcomes were developed by a bunch of faculty committees, sort of. They're high-level and don't have a single obvious assessment process (e.g., "student utilizes relevant knowledge sources to evaluate claims in discipline", etc.). They are all basically OK, but literally every faculty member makes up their own assessment. It could be a test question, a class project, a student interview, a portfolio, whatever.
Then every instructor must evaluate every student in every gen ed class (hence the many hours) on each of those learning outcomes, and score them on a rubric which was suggested by... someone, then voted into existence... or maybe just mandated. It is based on a well and truly debunked theory of learning, and it has 4 categories: did not meet outcome, approached outcome, achieved outcome, and exceeded outcome.
Side note: After this assessment process was dropped on us several years ago, there were a couple of months of intense discussion about how and who, etc. After the contention, the University Senate and administrators (who are goddamn members of our Senate for reasons that continue to elude me) agreed that no students would be identified in the assessment process, nor would any instructors or course sections. Everything would be reported in broad categories of courses, with all identifying information removed. This is because (see everything above) faculty who have been at a college/university more than a couple of years do not trust administrators. If you give them data, they will use it to fire, marginalize, or just be shitty to faculty they don't like, or in pursuit of whatever buzzword career booster is popular among provosts and deans that semester.
Great. It sucked but it was a compromise.
Then an admin announced that we had spent something like $50K/year on a "solution" to collect these data from faculty. Sadly, the "solution" required us to enter all student names attached to all scores, and our own names attached as well. When some of us mentioned the previous agreement we were told that we were harming the university by wanting to make this big (for us) financial investment worthless. When some other of us (OK, me) mentioned that every part of the assessment could be done with an Excel workbook or even pieces of paper slipped under the provost's door at the end of the semester and tallied up by a secretary, we were told that we clearly didn't understand assessment.
So now we have a tedious, laborious, overly complex, data-harvesting online platform to do the job of a single Excel workbook. It costs tens of thousands a year while we are told that we might go bankrupt at any minute and we can't have copier paper for exams. Our "assessment" involves a bunch of outcomes that were never evaluated for validity or effectiveness, assessed by hundreds of people who have (a) no expertise in creating valid assessments, (b) instructions that guarantee very low validity, and (c) fear-based motivation to inflate scores as much as possible. And we all spend a dozen or two hours a semester creating the assessments, scoring them, entering them in the cumbersome system, and dealing with dozens of emails about how to do it.
I hate some parts of my job, and this is one of the hateyest. I hate being forced (literally on threat of unemployment) to participate in this farce every semester. I hate being gaslit (gaslighted?) about the history, validity, and need for this process. I hate watching ritualized authoritarianism on display: Do this thing and prentend it makes sense and shut up about what's actually going on. I figure a junior faculty member who never took a psychometrics course and who didn't understand how universities work would feel OK about this; it has the appearance of assessment.
I just criticized fiction authors for not knowing how to end a story. I don't, either, I guess, because The End.

"The establishment doesn’t want to think about Epstein because they don’t want to think about how he got away with all of it, at such a scale, and for so long.
This is one reason—perhaps the main reason—why Epstein matters. ...
So, yes, a real reckoning with Epstein would mean a real re-thinking of questions of gender, wealth, and power."

Wajahat Ali says,
"What we see [in the Epstein story] is a big club. And we ain't in it. And this big club is a very wealthy, powerful man who believe the world and its girls are their oysters. "

"I'm saying this since the summer now, that this is the biggest cover up in modern history."

"David Brooks, who wrote in the NYT last month, 'The Epstein Story? Count Me Out' is... in the latest Epstein photo dump published by @oversightdemocrats.house.gov.
He should absolutely be fired by NYT for this. Major conflict of interest that he didn't disclose."

The lawsuit from the nonprofit #NationalTrust for #HistoricPreservation, which was filed Friday in the US District Court for DC, represents the first major legal challenge to Trump’s planned 90,000-square-foot addition & is poised to test the limits of his #power. The organization argues that the admin failed to undergo legally required reviews or receive congressional authorization for the project, which #Trump has rushed to launch in hopes of completing it before his term ends in 2029.
"Authoritarians believe there is no difference between truth and power, because if the former is allowed to operate separate from the latter, then it might be the case that ordinary people may develop some capacity for moral discernment."

#Power without friction always ends the same, because friction was the safeguard.
No guard rails enable silent drift; no pushback amplifies blind spots, and no consequences invite decay.
Without guard rails, decision speed increases but accuracy collapses, so small errors snowball into systemic failures and people stop speaking up because #risk feels fatal.

The Sinking Fund Commission has come up several times. Historians & legal scholars regard it as the nation’s first #independent agency. Created in 1790 by the first #Congress, the 5-member commission approved payments to settle America’s Revolutionary War debts.
The commission’s structure was proposed by #AlexanderHamilton, who saw it as a way to insulate members from #political pressures.

The group included some members – like the vice president – who could not be fired at will by the president. #Hamilton, then the Treasury Secy, served on the first Sinking Fund Commission alongside Secy of State #ThomasJefferson, his bitter political rival.

Several conservative #SCOTUS justices have signaled for years that they were ready to overturn the 1935 precedent — #HumphreysExecutor v. US — at issue today.
CJ #JohnRoberts wrote in a 2010 opinion in #FreeEnterprise Fund v. Public Company Oversight Board that the president’s #power generally includes “the authority to remove those who assist him in carrying out his duties. Without such power, the president could not be held fully accountable for discharging his own responsibilities.”

Justice #Kavanaugh pushes the lawyer for the fired #FTC commissioner Rebecca Slaughter about the #Trump admin’s argument that “independent agencies are not accountable to the people.” The justice asked how the lawyer would respond to the argument that “they’re not elected as #Congress & the President are, & are exercising massive power over individual liberty & billion dollar industries.”

The enormous sweep of last year’s #SCOTUS decision granting #Trump substantial #immunity from prosecution is apparent in this argument, where there has been repeated reference to that decision’s expansive vision of presidential #power.

#SCOTUS has ruled #Congress cannot limit the president’s #power to fire agencies led by a single official. The question before the court today is if it can insulate members of multi-member commissions from removal.
In 2020, in ruling Congress could not limit the president’s power to fire the head of the #CFPB, CJ #JohnRoberts wrote the ruling “does not foreclose Congress from pursuing alternative responses to the problem—for example, converting the CFPB into a multimember agency.”
The lawyer for fired FTC commissioner Rebecca Slaughter argued that a decision by the justices allowing the president the #power to fire leaders of #independent agencies meant that “everything is on the chopping block.” Justice #Alito immediately jumped in, saying that he was skeptical that ruling would lead to such sweeping ramifications.
