Sometimes you want noise. Sometimes you want silence. Sometimes you want to make noise, only to hide in the silence afterwards. At least for a little while.
Here is today's walk: a long and quiet country road, with swallows all around and celebrating, trees in full bloom, and a gentle warmth accompanying every single step.
Today in Labor History June 5, 1969: 250 imprisoned U.S. soldiers rioted at the military penal stockade at Fort Dix over barbarous conditions and the tortures being inflicted on them by the US military state. The majority were in prison for going AWOL, resisting the draft, or as conscientious objectors. Many were being held without trial. Their grievances included overcrowding, starvation, beatings, being chained to chairs, forced confessions, and participation in an unjust war. 38 of them were charged with inciting to riot. (Note the sign over the entrance to the prison: “Obedience to the Law is Freedom.” The photographer, David Fenton, called it Mussolini-like. It reminds me of the slogan over Auschwitz: “Work Sets You free.” Embarrassed, the military removed the sign soon after the photograph was published).

I just opened my first kiln firing after a long break from working in clay. Here's a first look at one of my favorites from the firing. Porcelain can be a fussy (and expensive) clay to work with, but I love the translucence so much, it's worth all the extra effort!

I am delighted to announce that the European Citizen Initiative (ECI) asking the EU to suspend the association agreement with Israel on human rights grounds has collected over one million signatures. The @EUCommission and the European Parliament have now a legal obligation to respond. 300K signatures were collected in less than one week!
I know this because six days ago I wrote a thread to explain how ECIs work and ask people to support this ECI in particular.

When the sun sets, its light becomes warmer and the tones turn redder. A sense of peace prevails, especially when the reflections kiss the water, illuminating even more and highlighting the colorful buildings around.
It would be nice if all of us, without exception, stopped fighting our daily battles and paused, at least for a few minutes, to listen to the silence of the sun as it kisses our skin at sunset.
Perhaps we would finally understand that life is too short not to appreciate moments like this.
