We might argue that fiction & entertainment have no real social impact, but the normalisation of the killing of women for entertainment purposes, at the very least, reflects our social values; at worst it normalises behaviours that solidify as domestic violence & sexual abuse.
As she suggests, at the very least we should be asking: why?
Today in Labor History July 24, 1777: The Boston Coffee Riot occurred when a mob of at least 100 working-class women seized coffee from Thomas Boylston, who was deliberately hording it to further inflate prices. When he refused to hand over the keys to his store, they seized him by the neck and tossed him into a cart, threatening to deport him from town, according to Abigail Adams. She also claimed that the women spanked Boylston, while a crowd of men watched.
There were regular food shortages in the revolutionary period of the early United States, from 1776-1779, and merchants often exploited these shortages by inflating their prices, resulting in over 30 riots, mostly led by women. In August, 1777, there was a food riot in East Hartford, CT, in which the mostly female crowd seized over 200 pounds of sugar being stored for the Continental Army.

I'm fortunate to intern with a local organization that prioritizes support for #transgender #women of color. It's a total different vibe from when I was a #Democratic precinct chair.
I quit the local #Democrats a couple years ago because, as an elected, I was on a mailing list available to any Dem candidate or org, and some adjacent orgs as well.
And some of these folks sent #images without #AltText or actual text content other than the subject line. None of them responded when I requested text; the #countyChair ignored my emails asking for help.
@mekkaokereke One of the most reliable things about white Dems in most of the country is that blame never lies on the white voters, and neither do the sacrifices they say are necessary.

Today in Labor History May 17, 1900: Following the siege of Mafeking, during the Second Boer War, over 27,000 Boer women and children died in some of the world's first concentration camps. The Spanish had actually created similar death camps in Cuba during the Ten Year’s War (1868-1878). However, the death camps in South Africa were the first to be called concentration camps. Additionally, the Boer War concentration camp system was the first time an entire nation had been targeted. During the war, Mahatma Gandhi and 800 Indian slaves started the Ambulance Corps to serve the British. Just a few years later, 1904, the German Empire committed a genocide against the Herero people of southwest Africa, slaughtering 80% of them, and 50% of the Nama people.

@wdlindsy I find the article insightful. I might go read the book. But I notice that the author in the Guardian does a weird grammatical thing and it perplexes me. When talking about the feud between Greta Thunberg and Andrew Tate on Twitter, they write:
“Please provide your email address so I can send a complete list of my car collection and their respective enormous emissions,” Tate tweeted at Greta, along with a photo of him pumping gas into one of them.
The Tate tweeted at Greta instead of Tate tweeted at Thunberg strikes me as odd. Why do we use the man's last name and the woman's first? Wouldn't this sentence sound weird if it was written Andrew tweeted at Thunberg?
Given that Andrew and his brother Tristan are similarly toxic, it actually makes sense to say "Andrew" to be clear which vile Tate we are talking about. There's no similar possible confusion on Thunbergs.
Isn't this strange? Twice they refer to Thunberg as 'Greta' while never referring to Tate simply as 'Andrew'. It seems to be more familiar with the woman and more formal with the man. I can't come up with any neutral explanation for this. It makes no sense to name them differently inside the same sentence.
An author wrote it and any number of copyeditors let this go by. I don't understand.
