RE: mstdn.ca/@pinhman/115980346172

This article highlights one of the problems with : it does not serve communities, it serves corporations.

generation is slightly more $$ efficient when centralized. But design is more when generation is .

is an model - 600 members, remote, nearly w/storage. A co-op with the hamlet could be the ideal pilot program for Hydro.

Accuweather: Winter storm brings cold not seen since 2021, putting Texas power grid to the test

AccuWeather meteorologists say Dallas may remain below freezing for up to 80 hours. During the Texas freeze of 2021, temperatures stayed below 32 degrees for about 139 hours.

[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

@cherdt I'm not even shure 's is that advanced

        • Most likely they still have manned switches and a seperate fiberoptical network to control things…

And given the fragility of the fraying infrastructure, it'll propably only need a small pack of C4 on a powerline pylon to get everything to shut down...

          Energy and AI Observatory
The IEA’s Energy and AI Observatory provides up-to-date data and analysis on the growing links between the energy sector and artificial intelligence (AI). The new and fast-moving field of AI requires a new approach to gathering data and information, and the Observatory aims to provide regularly updated data and a comprehensive view of the implications of AI on energy demand (energy for AI) and of AI applications for efficiency, innovation, resilience and competitiveness in the energy sector (AI for energy). This first-of-a-kind platform is developed and maintained by the IEA, with valuable contributions of data and insights from the IEA’s energy industry and tech sector partners, and complements the IEA's Special Report on Energy and AI.

At my previous full-time role I worked on a simulator for just these sorts of black start events. The US has come very close to having regional outages of this scale several times in the last decade, and our black start capability is largely untested to my knowledge (by which I mean largely untested in real-world scenarios).

Spain is about to face the challenge of a “black start”
