Digital Battlefield: Data Centers Become Military Targets in Israel-Iran Conflict

Iran has declared Microsoft, Google, and Amazon data centers "hostile technological infrastructure" — marking a dangerous new era where civilian technology becomes legitimate military targets.

Iranian sources published a list of dozens of regional facilities classified as suitable for attack. This escalation threatens the entire digital economy. If data centers become targets, global cloud infrastructure, undersea cables, and communication networks are all at risk.

The traditional distinction between civilian and military infrastructure is collapsing. Data centers serving millions of users simultaneously can also support military operations, process strategic information, and develop AI with military applications.

Parallel developments reveal continued cooperation between AI companies and the Pentagon despite public claims of severing ties. Court documents show plans for AI companies to train on classified defense data.

The precedent is dangerous. If Iran targets data centers today, other nations may target similar infrastructure tomorrow — in Europe, Asia, or the Americas.

"Maine legislators are currently considering , a resolution bill that would establish a data center coordination council to provide input and evaluate policy options for data center development in the state. The bill comes after a series of data center proposals have been met with local pushback.

"Shortly after voted to pause its data center conversations in November of 2025, residents in , lobbied their city councilors to reject a $300 million on December 16, 2025. There, community members organized over a weekend to change city councilors’ minds from supporting the idea when it was first made public on December 11, 2025, to voting unanimously to reject it the following week.

'When community members do find out about these projects, they have really serious concerns around the impacts to their local environment and wellbeing.'

"This caused him and others to worry about how the site would affect the town’s resources, including the grid. Along with his neighbors, Davis started , a grassroots campaign opposing the data center."

                                              - AI startups are all unprofitable, and do not appear to have a path to sustainability.

                                              - AI data centers are being built in anticipation of demand that doesn’t exist, and will only exist if AI startups — which are all unprofitable — can afford to pay them.

                                              - Oracle, which has committed to building 4.5GW of data centers, is burning cash every day that OpenAI takes to set up its GPUs, and when it starts making money, it does so from a starting position of billions and billions of dollars in debt.

                                              - Margins are low throughout the entire stack of AI data center operators — from landlords like Applied Digital to compute providers like CoreWeave — thanks to the billions in debt necessary to fund both construction and IT hardware to make them run, putting both parties in a hole that can only be filled with revenues that come from either hyperscalers or AI startups.

                                              - In a very real sense, the AI compute industry is dependent on AI “working out,” because if it doesn’t, every single one of these data centers will become a burning hole in the ground.

I will admit I’m quite disappointed that the media at large has mostly ignored this story. Limp, cautious “are we in an AI bubble?” conversations are insufficient to deal with the potential for collapse we’re facing.

I'm sorry... I'm really sorry... I know that at a tech event, you expect to hear from a speaker who will come up and tell you how to lose hundreds of billions of dollars building data-centres for the money-losingest technology in human history, a technology so wildly defective that we've had to come up with new, exotic words to describe its defects, like "hallucination." A technology that will never recoup the capex already firehosed on – let alone the trillions committed to it – and whose only possible path to glory is to somehow get so good that it makes millions of people unemployed... But don't worry: you can't make the word-guessing program into a "superintelligence" by shoveling more words into it...

Hyperion's name comes from two Greek words that together mean "watcher from above" or "he who goes above".

Hyperion was a Titan, the ancient Greek gods that preceded the Olympian gods like Zeus, Athena, etc. Prometheus, Atlas, and the word Titan itself are frequently used to name tech projects. A fun web search is "COMPANY_NAME Titan"; try it. It seems lost on these folks that the Titans were deposed by the Olympian gods and condemned to an eternity in Tartarus, a kind of hell. In other words they're the loser gods, if you want to be simplistic and vulgar about it.

I always ask her for the dirt on the name, and she always delivers (as in the above, which I credit to her).

We should not allow data centers to contribute yet more damage to our communities.

Why are we even allowing 24/7 generators for non-emergency businesses. When the power goes out, we as citizens go down, let the data centers go offline as well. They aren't 'mission critical' for any county or state purpose. They have workload fail over plans for this exact situation.

These same data center operators last year asked if they could run their generators during 'high load' events during the summer; they claimed it wouldn't be for long hours, just short durations.

Given the past performance of PJM and Dominion Power, outages that reach >5 hours are EXCEEDINGLY rare.

As such, batteries exist to cover this likely outage duration. Are they as cheap as generators? Not yet, but we're seeing BILLION DOLLAR profits from these companies. They can afford it.

And should a planned outage need to be multiple days, again, they can go offline like the rest of us. How often has this happened? I'm guessing basically never.

Data Centers provide NO BENEFIT to the affected communities that any other 'normal' business provides.

Stop giving these companies loopholes to pollute and damage our communities.

The result was a very modern failure though: some of the world's most liquid futures and options markets went quiet all at once. When a single vendor issue can pause price discovery in energy, rates and commodities, you are not running a global market, you are running a very elaborate single point of failure. Risk teams endlessly tune models and margin, while one of the biggest risks sits in the server room and basic infrastructure that keeps the whole thing running. Market structure is no stronger than its least redundant piece of infrastructure, and this episode puts operational resilience firmly in the category of core market risk, not back office plumbing.

That water is already loaded with nitrates; as it passes through the cooling systems, some of the liquid evaporates, but the compounds remain and become concentrated. The return water is then mixed with industrial wastewater in the giant lagoons at the Port of Morrow and sprayed onto fields as liquid fertilizer, even in winter when there are no crops to absorbit. The result, acording to hydrologists quoted by Rolling Stone, is an accelerated "washing" of nitrates into the subsoil: the more it is irrigated, the faster the aquifer is poisoned.”

For one example among many, a Bloomberg article from March about Microsoft cancelling data center plans began:
Microsoft Corp. has walked away from new data center projects in the US and Europe that would have amounted to a capacity of about 2 gigawatts of electricity, according to TD Cowen analysts, who attributed the pullback to an oversupply of the clusters of computers that power artificial intelligence.
"Data center projects that...amounted to a capacity of about 2 gigawatts of electricity" is a nonsensical statement. The (technical) capacities of a data center have to do with storage, compute, transmission, and latency. I understand there's probably some Fermi calculation along the lines of converting electric power to compute capacity using the TDP of NVIDIA's latest GPUs or something like that. Nevertheless, it's misleading to speak this way, not to mention lazy. It is oversimplifying in a bad way, treating data centers as utilities that supply a commodity when that is just not the case (at least not with AI, where prices for services still fluctuate fairly wildly).

In Marx's terms, the cloud removes the means of production from the hands of the workers and places them under the control of corporations. In that way the movement of most digital work into the cloud is analogous to the trends the Luddites were fighting against, with the movement of skilled weaving work into factories performed by loom operators and subsequent deskilling of weavers.

This should have been vigorously resisted as it was unfolding, but it was not as far as I can remember. It should be vigorously opposed now, but it is not. Data centers, our modern mills, are consuming vast quantities of critical resources like electric power and clean water, to the point that there are communities struggling to provide these resources to human beings who live there. Yet the pushback against this expansion is muted, and data centers are expanding rapidly. Where is the left's response to this corporate seizure of the means of production?

People are worried about generative AI taking jobs, and rightly so, but I think these concerns point to an overarching trend towards a kind of digital feudalization. Generative AI is already created by taking peoples' hard work without any compensation. You're permitted to use the technology "free of charge", but you can't pay the rent or mortgage, or buy food, with ChatGPT output. This essentially renders all of us as peasants.

The threat from bosses that you could be fired and replaced with generative AI, even if false, presses down wage demands and encourages doing work for no compensation. In this climate, people feel compelled to learn how to use generative AI to do their work because they perceive (again, probably rightly) that if they don't do that they will eventually find themselves without employment opportunities. Once again, if you're in a position of doing uncompensated work like this on behalf of a powerful entity, you are in a relationship distressingly similar to the one a peasant was in to a lord in the feudal system.

I'm not saying anything new here, just thinking out loud. But doesn't the left have anything to say, loudly proudly and often, about this? These are bread and butter issues for the left, aren't they?
