This register article, like anti-ai in general, suffers from one central problem.
It never defines #AI.
Can you be against something without saying what exactly it is? Is it any software that is trained? Is it the image recognition that you have long used? Or does it become bad only when it becomes "large" and "language" based training?

The #TrolleyProblem is not abstract. There is absolutely an IRL version of it: #voting.
So, every couple years #leftists argue about whether or not to vote for the lesser of two evils.
They have a lever ( #vote ), and if they pull the lever then fewer people die. If they do nothing, more people die.
There are two basic moral foundations for this decision:
- Deontological: actions are morally good or bad, not consequences.
- Utilitarian: outcomes determine the moral value of actions.
I'm not going to get into the pros and cons of each. Instead, I'm going to address the psychological aspect of it.
People who align to Deontological ethics (which is a significant, if not outright majority, of those on the #left) view things in terms of purity and taint.
The action affects the moral weight of the person. So the person is viewed as a good or bad person depending upon whether their actions and behaviors are judged as morally righteous by the standards of their political alignment.
People who align to Utilitarian ethics don't give a shit about any of that. Furthermore they consider _not acting_ to be a morally culpable choice. There is no difference between the original position of the lever.
Now, there are some who would argue for not voting for a utilitarian reason. The argument is basically that not voting forces the parties to court your vote, and thus moving them closer to your position.
I don't think this is true in modern democracies, because politicians already do not support policies that the vast majority of their voters support.
But, I will grant it. If you are to take this to be the case, then here is your cost function:

This is basically saying that you have to be willing to pay the harm caused the the worse evil as the price for the gains after your inflection point.
Which, points to the deontological argument in favor of voting for the lesser evil: you are buying a good future by paying with lives and bodies that (likely) are not your own. You are throwing someone under the bus for your moral purity.
Personally?
I personally think that the only reason evil is allowed to exist in our world at all is because good people are so afraid of "being bad" that they constantly abdicate the reins of power to evil people. Those #evil people exploit it.

Lea Ypi: The abandonment of the critique of capitalism as a class project. You have the environmentalist left, the feminist left, the anti-racist left, and there’s been a critique of universalism that has made it difficult to connect these identity-based struggles into one vision. Paradoxically, the Left has inherited the same culturalist approach that the Right takes to understanding conflict — saying it’s about racism or gender without fitting those critiques into a critique of the broader mode of production.
What the Left really lacks is an alternative cosmopolitanism. When I was a student in the late ’90s and early 2000s in Italy, that was the moment of the alter-globalization movement. You had the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, the emerging idea of an alternative globalization. But that movement was suffocated by the hegemony of neoliberalism, which insisted that you didn’t need another politics, you just needed the right policy. All you had to do was cater to the Third Way: policy fixes, a little redistribution, compromise with economic elites.
Those of us who were on the streets were seen as ridiculous romantics who didn’t understand that the Cold War was over and there was no alternative. That’s what we lost, and that’s what we’re struggling to recover.
Meagan Day: The Left has been suspicious of the nation-state for good reason. But in recent history, it’s largely been within this context that the weak have been able to express their power. Is there anything redeeming about the nation-state?
Lea Ypi: Pragmatically, yes, because the nation-state is the site of coercive power. If you want to take and exercise power, you need to know where it resides. Otherwise, the social struggle just remains everywhere and nowhere."

This should have been vigorously resisted as it was unfolding, but it was not as far as I can remember. It should be vigorously opposed now, but it is not. Data centers, our modern mills, are consuming vast quantities of critical resources like electric power and clean water, to the point that there are communities struggling to provide these resources to human beings who live there. Yet the pushback against this expansion is muted, and data centers are expanding rapidly. Where is the left's response to this corporate seizure of the means of production?
People are worried about generative AI taking jobs, and rightly so, but I think these concerns point to an overarching trend towards a kind of digital feudalization. Generative AI is already created by taking peoples' hard work without any compensation. You're permitted to use the technology "free of charge", but you can't pay the rent or mortgage, or buy food, with ChatGPT output. This essentially renders all of us as peasants.
The threat from bosses that you could be fired and replaced with generative AI, even if false, presses down wage demands and encourages doing work for no compensation. In this climate, people feel compelled to learn how to use generative AI to do their work because they perceive (again, probably rightly) that if they don't do that they will eventually find themselves without employment opportunities. Once again, if you're in a position of doing uncompensated work like this on behalf of a powerful entity, you are in a relationship distressingly similar to the one a peasant was in to a lord in the feudal system.
I'm not saying anything new here, just thinking out loud. But doesn't the left have anything to say, loudly proudly and often, about this? These are bread and butter issues for the left, aren't they?
