@anildash @Lacey I advise you to remember this at least: if you ever think it's right or ethical to take pride in the current state of #software and the #technology sector and its achievements of the last few decades: DON'T.
If every last person who ever billed themselves as a "tech entrepreneur" spent the rest of their lives being pelted with rotten oranges, it would be reckoned as *justice*. Your crowd has, among other things, delivered the people over to fascism. And no, you're not one of the "good ones", any more than there's such a thing as a "good cop". You're ALL complicit.
@anildash @Lacey In any case I think you're emotionally projecting, Mr. Dot-Com. This isn't about your hurt feelings or Lacey's hurt feelings, or about some wispy opinions on whether coding is "real" or not. It's about whether software development, "software engineering" as it's sometimes called (usually in error), will ever raise itself out of the swamps of the current-day slop-happy culture of capitalist #technology, take some responsibility for its own actions, and rise to the level of a *genuine engineering discipline*—with standards designed around serving the public interest.
As long as tenth-raters such as yourself as Lacey dominate this field, Mr. Dot-Com—people who seem to care only about themselves and their feelings, and who want to keep software development stuck as a sort of playset for aging children (who expect to be paid ridiculous amounts of money for their playtime, in comparison to the wages of those who do actual constructive work like sweeping floors or bagging groceries0 then #software is going to remain where it is right now: 99.9% trash.

There we go - my opinions on "vibe coding" after having actually created a full working app with it - as a senior Software Engineer and Cybersecurity expert.
I think some of the strange shifts we're seeing in high-profile folks in tech who already had authoritarian impulses---which, let's be real, is uncomfortably common among tech workers---is that they are groping for ways to embrace taking power that do not run afoul of other values they've endorsed. This really can't be done unless the person was already pretty antisocial, so we see weird behavior such as running self-serving "surveys" about AI with foregone conclusions, microaggressions and dissembling, attacks and other forms of hostility, being "one shotted" or conflating a computer program with humanness, etc. It's really a general problem, in that view, given how the US regime has shifted away from social democracy/liberalism into a much more brash, violent, and authoritarian stance. There are a variety of ways to cope with such a shift, one being to embrace it while bursting into a cloud of internal contradictions.
🤦🏻♂️ Oh no... The line between a successful lunar mission and a $72 million piece of space junk can come down to a single line of code. 🚀 NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer mission just provided a painful lesson in systems engineering. Shortly after launch, a navigation glitch caused the spacecraft to lose its sense of direction. Instead of correcting its course, the onboard computer entered a loop that exhausted its entire fuel supply in less than a day. 😳
This wasn't a mechanical failure or a solar flare, it was a software error that prevented the craft from communicating with its own star trackers. When we build complex systems, we often focus on the big risks while ignoring the small, logical traps that can paralyze a machine. For the engineers who spent years on this project, it is a reminder that in space, there is no "undo" button for a bad update. 🌖
🧠 A logic error caused the craft to misinterpret its orientation.
⚡ The entire fuel reserve was spent trying to fix a non-existent course deviation.
🎓 Recovery efforts failed because the craft could no longer point its antenna at Earth.
🔍 This incident highlights the critical need for more robust hardware-in-the-loop testing.

As part of my book “ActivityPub: Programming for the Social Web“, I created a coding example to show how to program for the ActivityPub API. ap is a command-line client, written in Python, for doing basic tasks with ActivityPub.
For example, you can log into a server using this command:
ap login yourname@yourserver.example
Once you’re logged in, you can follow someone:
ap follow other@different.example
Or, you could post some content:
ap create note --public "Hello, World"
This isn’t enough to have a real social networking experience, but I think it’s pretty useful for testing an ActivityPub API server, or automating some repetitive tasks.
I should note quickly here that not all ActivityPub servers support the ActivityPub API. It’s an under-utilized part of the ActivityPub standard. In particular, Mastodon, Threads, Flipboard, and other services don’t support the API. There’s a pretty good list of servers and clients that do support the API in this Codeberg issue.
Suffice it to say, unless you’re actively working with one of those platforms, or you are writing your own, you’re not going to get much use out of ap. It will probably give you an error message like “No OAuth endpoints found” if it can’t use the service.
I’ve never packaged ap for distribution; it was always supposed to be example code. But given the recent interest in the ActivityPub API, including the work going on in the ActivityPub API task force, I decided to get it into shape for installation by developers working on other apps. My friend Matthias Pfefferle of Automattic asked me about it when we were at FOSDEM this year, and I was embarrassed to see how difficult it was for him to use.
So, I’ve made two big upgrades to the package. The first was actually making it a package, and distributing it! I upgraded the package management framework to uv, which seems like a good bet for now, and pushing the application to PyPI, the Python Package Index. It’s visible at https://pypi.org/project/activitypub-cli/ now. (Note: different package name from the command name! The PyPI “ap” package name was taken a while ago.)
You can now install the application in one shot with this command on a computer that has Python on it:
pipx install activitypub-cli
You can test that the application installed correctly in your path by running the version command:
ap version
That should show the same version as is currently on the pypi.org page for the project.
The second change was implementing the current OAuth 2.0 profile best practices. I’ve upgraded the login flow so it tries a lot of different options for identifying itself to the server: CIMD, FEP d8c2, and Dynamic Client Registration. It tries to do them in preferential order; it uses permanent, global client identifiers before dynamic ones.
I’m especially interested in testing this command-line client against other servers. If you’re developing an ActivityPub API server, please install the ap command and try it out against your (development!) server. Report a bug if it doesn’t work well, or send me a DM at @evanprodromou if it works OK. Given time, I think ap can be a useful first smoke test for ActivityPub API implementations.

I was able to finish reading all of “The Genius of Lisp“ by @cdegroot and the whole book was as good as the free preview (chapter 8). I was able to speed-read through the detailed explanations of concepts I already knew, like tail recursion, garbage collection, the Y-combinator, Currying functions, and so on. But there were parts where I slowed down and read carefully, like the section on the Universal Turing Machine, and some of the details of the IBM-704 system architecture. Also the story of how the first Lisp implementation was created when one of McCarthy’s grad students implemented an M-Expression calculator, this was described in slightly more detail than what I recall McCarthy himself explaining in his 1960 paper — that or I had just forgotten those parts of the story.
The tone of this book reminds me a lot of popular physics books like Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time,” which was aimed more at general audiences than professionals. That said, there is a lot to enjoy about this book for professionals like myself as well. There are many good stories about the principals designers of Lisp throughout. The sections on the commercialization of Lisp for the first AI boom of the 1970s and it’s subsequent “AI winter,” were very interesting to read. And if you are a teacher, you might like how some of the concepts in the book are explained.
And I would definitely recommend this very strongly to 3rd-year high school students, or 1st and 2nd year college students, who are more genuinely curious about how computers work and want to know more than just how to make the next billion dollar app.
The next #LispyGopherClimate show with @screwlisp I look forward to talking about this book some more.

@cdegroot I think you might have a factual error on page 174 in the section called “Emacs Lisp.” You write this:
In a nutshell, Emacs Lisp (“elisp”) is a classical Lisp-1 with dynamic variable scoping. As you may recall, a Lisp-1 has a shared namespaces for symbols depicting variables and symbols depicting functions, while a Lisp-2 has two such namespaces; Scheme is a Lisp-1, and Common Lisp a Lisp-2. The debate on which one is better will likely never be settled, so it was probably either a coin-toss for Stallman or simpy a matter of expediency, if he thought a Lisp-1 would be simpler to implement.
I believe Emacs Lisp is a Lisp-2 system, unless I am misunderstanding some finer point about the difference between Lisp-1 and Lisp-2 systems. For example, Emacs Lisp has defvar, setq, defun, and funcall. You can use setq to set the value of a variable f and you can also do something like (defun f () (princ (format f))). So unless I am mistaken, that makes Emacs Lisp a Lisp-2.

That's it, people. With lots of emotion I announce the first release of my first ever open-source desktop app. Who happen to know I'm blind will laugh (and I share that laugh, so feel free and don't hold yourselves): it's an image converter. I was in need of an accessible solution for well… converting images from one format to another and didn't find anything, especially that supported ICO needed, for example, for making favicons for websites.
Anyway, it's a dead simple and of course accessible #Windows app that can work with most popular image formats, can convert in batches, can do favicons, application icons, resize with keeping proportions or cropping as you wish (very useful if, for example, you need a photo of yourself but 128x128 pixels and not a pixel wider). You can paste images straight to the main window, and you can even paste direct links. It also supports detecting and downloading files that are stored in clouds (I tested with OneDrive).
Anyway, it's called SIC! (for the Latin word "Sic" and for "Simple Image Converter"). Oh, and it's multilingual, supports English, French, German, Ukrainian and Russian for now. And yes, you can use it as installed software or in portable mode, and it doesn't go to the Internet (only to check for updates), unless you add an image by link or prefer to update automatically. I reiterate: your images are converted on your device and don't go anywhere.

Multiple current #AWS #software #developers said they were being asked to take on new #roles with the assistance of AI tools. Just had a sighted person tell me they often use clients and programs that were made for us, they don’t use screen readers, but they use clients like oh i don’t know a blind Mastodon client, SonarPad, as an example, because they said, the interface is 1000 times cleaner, there’s a lot of keyboard shortcuts, and I never have to put up with animation nonsense. You know software development has vastly sank in quality when sighted folk are using blind clients. #Programming #Software

If anyone happens to be able to get it to work in a Guix shell, please let me know, or open a PR on the Codeberg Git repository.
The only examples for how to use (schemacs ui) are in the test suite and the Schemacs Debugger. The only documentation so far are the comments in the source code, though I did try to be very thorough with comments.
The “Debugui” debugger works, but only has one single feature: the eval-expression command, which is bound to M-: (Alt-Colon). This command works the same as in #Emacs but you enter a Scheme language command instead. The #EmacsLisp interpreter is not yet connected to the GUI.
Now that this is merged, I am going to work on a few tasks in the Emacs Lisp interpreter that have been pending for more than a few weeks now. Then, back to creating new features in the GUI toward the goal of making it a useful program editor. And also, of course, writing some more documentation.
Well I have started the process of upgrading my #music #studio! First item on the list is the audio interface. Just got the new #Focusrite #Scarlett #18i20 4th gen today. Rather large upgrade from my nine year old 2nd gen unit with some cool features.
Unfortunately....I had one helluva time getting it set up. First, my #Mac never recognized it as being plugged into any USB port (USB 2, 3, or USB-C) or USB cable used. Second, the control #software intermittently recognized it but would fail downloading the new #firmware. Third, the unit mysteriously powered off during troubleshooting. It is *completely* dead.
I've hooked up the old one again but this was...disappointing. I will start the return process tomorrow morning.

"[...] those who now resist to the fear of missing out and preserve their skills might gain even higher wages in the future [...]"
I'm honestly not so sure about that. Basically every skilled profession from cooking, over tailoring, to construction work has been automated, outsourced or flooded with workers so much that its practitioners are oftentimes paid minimum wage (or sometimes even less). There's very little functional difference between a programmer and a shoemaker.
Sure there're few exceptions, like the Michelin-star level chef or the master woodworker who get paid handsomely, but by definition, there can't be _that_ many experts in one field. Plus the number of people who can even can afford Master-level products and services (given they realized their value in the first place) is also diminishing sharply.
Companies and people have stopped considering #SoftwareEngineeing or #Software itself a service/product worth a skilled professional. Just like they did with T-shirts, food and many things more. The resulting feedback loop started with the #Vibecoding and #LLM hype will further suppress the wages of tech workers while simultaneously increase prices (i.e. #Enshittifcation).
It's going to be a very interesting future in software...
🧵 …that's the answer to the toot above. Not only that, when coding software, a lot of thought is given to what it is more stable and how it is implemented more safely. Mindlessly letting something rattle together sooner or later results in serious gaps.

TIl about an interesting OS option by Lenovo, on their notebook computers. Logical yet interesting and expected
You get an *Open Source* OS by default from Lenovo. No more win64 as default
If you want closed source you have to **ask** for it and pay the _hefty premium_ that microSoft's microslop demands, for their LLM infected, malware like OS. Lenovo wants to sell it's notebooks for the best price possible if you want an OS, and microsoft does not meet those demands anymore (for a while)

gonna try again:
any of y'all know any good replacements for MS Paint? and i don't mean a specialized tool with a bunch of knobs and levers to pull like GIMP or the various other popular pixel art tools. just a very simple program where you can easily paste things in, move them around, and occasionally draw a little (very basic features which microsoft has somehow managed to completely fucking cock up!)
Looks like a boring flip phone at first glance - an Alcatel Go Flip 🥱
Except: it runs KaiOS - what became of Firefox OS, and isn't Android based or iOS based, but its own thing! 🤓
Neat!

Wie temporäre Code-Korrekturen zu dauerhaften Systemrisiken werden
Distributions are interwoven with the GNU principles.
Before distributions I would have to download the GNU program Source Code one by one, then cross compile (GCC for example) them.
Once chicken egg tools were cross compiled I could start with native
./configure; make; make test; make install
Quote
Specifically, free software means users have the four essential freedoms: (0) to run the program, (1) to study and change the program in source code form, (2) to redistribute exact copies, and (3) to distribute modified versions.

These are important pillars of Free Software

A chicken egg tool is a tool, in this case the GCC compiler, which you need in your GNU Linux Operating System to compile your programs.
The GCC compiler needs to be compiled first.
This means that you need another C compiler, to compile your GCC compiler.
The other C compiler will need to reside in another Operating System.
In this specific example of building a GNU Linux multi tasking Operating System from the MS-DOS single tasking operating system, I used the Turbo C compiler, which was written by Borland. The Turbo C compiler, is a proprietary Closed Source compiler, which is delivered as a executable, not in source code.
Armed with the Turbo C compiler, I ran the following command sequence for compiling GCC
./configure
make test
# this runs the assembler program too
make
I did not run 'make install' because GCC needs to be installed in GNU Linux. I also used switches so that a Linux ELF Binary executable was created, not a MS-DOS executable binary.
The last step was to do a raw write of the GCC binary to the Linux file system.

About GNU
GNU was launched in 1983 by Richard Stallman
Quote
The primary and continuing goal of GNU is to offer a Unix-compatible system that would be 100% free software. Not 95% free, not 99.5%, but 100%. The name of the system, GNU, is a recursive acronym meaning GNU's Not Unix—a way of paying tribute to the technical ideas of Unix, while at the same time saying that GNU is something different. Technically, GNU is like Unix. But unlike Unix, GNU gives its users freedom.
^Z
Realize this
Without GNU, Linux {distributions} would *not* exist. You would only have a kernel after boot, no user land programs
Be grateful for the existence of GNU

Vibe Coding Is Killing Open Source Software, Researchers Argue

Vibe Coding Is Killing Open Source.
According to a new study from a team of researchers in Europe, vibe coding is killing open-source software (OSS) and it’s happening faster than anyone predicted.

I posted this some time ago, but now that I have a few blind friends who are involved in programming, and especially the musical side of things, I figured I would try again. To summarise. I want to see if it is possible to make pre-electric recordings sound like early electric ones. So one from 1903 might sound like it came from 1930. I doubt we could go any higher than the 1940's, if that, given the constraints of acoustic recording, but it would still be a huge improvement in sound. Perhaps, with the right software, some frequences can be restored. The trouble is that there are only a few such programs and all are inaccessible with screen readers. I explain things more fully at the below link. Normally, this is a subreddit about opera recordings and singers from the 1950's and earlier, so if you have no clue about this but like opera, feel free to join us in general.

We keep creating the wrong software. Our thinking is so embedded in a capitalist framework that we don’t even realise that we are acting within its confines. The answer to replacing MS Office is not LibreOffice. The answer is to create software that serves people, not corporations.
