Devibecoding as a Service? 💡
Apparently my brain won't stop thinking about vibecoding today so here is another one.
🚀 In my previous posts I defined vibecoding as code nobody fully understands, and devibecoding as the process of making it yours. But what if you can't or don't want to do that yourself?
🏢 I think there's a business model emerging here. More and more startups and small companies vibecode their MVPs. Some of those actually get traction. And suddenly you have a prototype that works, has users, maybe even revenue — but the code underneath is a black box nobody on the team truly understands.
🔧 Enter devibecoding as a service. A spectrum from self-help to full takeover:
⚡ Tools that help you understand and restructure your own vibecoded codebase
⚡ Consulting and code audits that identify the critical gaps
⚡ Full transformation — taking a vibecoded prototype and turning it into a maintainable business application
🤔 This isn't entirely new — agencies have always rescued messy codebases. But the scale could be different. If vibecoding lowers the barrier to building software, the number of prototypes that need "growing up" will explode.
💬 Think of it as the natural next step: vibecoding creates, devibecoding matures. And there might be a whole industry in between.
Would you pay for devibecoding as a service? Or is "just rewrite it properly" always the better answer?
#SoftwareDevelopment #AI #Vibecoding #Devibecoding #StartupLife #CodeQuality #BusinessModel
🤖 Everyone talks about vibecoding but most definitions focus on how the code was created. I think that misses the point.
My take: vibecoded code is code that nobody on your team has fully understood. It doesn't matter if an AI wrote it, a junior dev copied it from Stack Overflow, or a senior dev hacked it together at 2am. If nobody has truly reviewed and comprehended it — it's vibecode.
That distinction matters because it shifts the conversation from "did you use AI?" to "do you actually know what this does?" 🔍
This also means: code that an AI generated but you thoroughly reviewed and understood is NOT vibecode. The tool doesn't define the category — your level of understanding does.
Why does this matter? Because it changes the risk assessment entirely. Using AI to write code you then deeply review is just a productivity tool. Shipping code you don't fully grasp is a conscious risk decision — sometimes justified, sometimes not.
Do you agree with this definition? Or would you draw the line somewhere else?
Devibecoding 🔧
In my last post I defined vibecoded code as code nobody on your team has fully understood. But what happens when you take that code and make it yours?
I think we need a term for this: devibecoding.
💻 Devibecoding is the process of taking code you don't fully grasp — whether AI generated or not — and systematically working through it until you truly own it. Understanding it, restructuring it, making it maintainable.
🧠 This is not just code review. It's a mix of reverse engineering, refactoring and deep comprehension — without being able to ask the original author about their intent. Because there was no human author.
💬 Someone in the replies to my last post described exactly this: putting in the effort to understand and reformat AI output until it becomes their code. That's devibecoding in practice.
🚀 And here is my take: this will become its own discipline. With its own tools, its own best practices, maybe its own specialists. Think tools that don't just lint but explain. That visualize where your understanding gaps are. Possibly even AI helping you understand AI code — ironic but inevitable.
⚡ The more vibecode exists in the world, the bigger the need for people who can devibecode it.
What do you think — is this already part of your workflow? And what tooling would help you most? 🔍

I've just made a very important update to the Auto-Dubber script for eleven labs, on the final step before processing the file, it will check your account balance and tell you how many credits you have remaining so you can make a decision particularly with longer bits of Audio of what you want to do.
It's really important for people like me who accidentally go way over there free credits for the month and end up paying huge amounts of money.

Spare these few minutes to read this long long toot about Large Language Models
I've been working with POSIX Operating Systems for many many decades. Seek my other posts for more information check my GitHub page where some of the stories have been entered.
A lot has been written and screamed about vibe coding. I'm going to give you a short and concise rundown.
Individual X cannot even write a hello world program and the BASIC programming language. This individual has played with a Large Language Model and knows that such a system can write that BASIC program for him.
He fires up the model and asks for a Hello World program in Commodore 64 BASIC
The model response with
10 PRINT "fa wakkà"
20 GOTO 10
Individual X cannot analyze the code. He doesn't know that the second line will loop the program to the first and thus will create an infinite loop on his C64 emulator. Individual X has never worked on a physical bare metal C64. He doesn't know how to stop the code
The large language model created the second line because many hits in his database have a Hello World program for the C64 written in exactly this manner. The large language model is like a parrot which talks. The model doesn't understand what it says the model has no notion of understanding just like the parrot.
Individual executes the code and cannot stop it because he doesn't know that control break exists for that on the C64
Thus his C64 is in an infinite loop and he doesn't know what to do.
Now I will go to that same large language model. I not only know how to solder the Program Logic Array 96114 on the C64 with a mandatory heat sink I also know how to write code in assembly and I know many ROM subroutines of the C64 by heart including
JSR $FFD2
A sub routine which prints a character on your video VIC chip.
When I see that the model puts line 20 I immediately delete that line because it's unnecessary.
No extrapolate this on a full program, with 20000 lines of code, complete with libraries and API created by a large language model when the task is given by a vibe coder.
Since individual X cannot even analyze Commodore 64 basic code of a Hello World program, consisting of two lines where the second line is unnecessary, the person has no chance in hell to analyze the above given program
There are people walking around on this planet, who think that they will be able to write software, with a large language model, as their boss and think that that software will be usable in the field
When the 20,000 line program breaks the API is totally unusable and the task for that program crashes the whole server on the bare metal, censored will hit the fan
I urge everyone who uses large language models for any subject, that they should be an absolute master of the subject, where they use the model as a low level assistant
Thank you for reading

Vibe Coding Is Killing Open Source Software, Researchers Argue
‘If the maintainers of small projects give up, who will produce the next Linux?’
Vibe Coding Is Killing Open Source.
According to a new study from a team of researchers in Europe, vibe coding is killing open-source software (OSS) and it’s happening faster than anyone predicted.

Coding is like taking a lump of clay and slowly working it into the thing you want it to become. It is this process, and your intimacy with the medium and the materials you’re shaping, that teaches you about what you’re making – its qualities, tolerances, and limits – even as you make it. You know the least about what you’re making the moment before you actually start making it. That’s when you think you know what you want to make. The process, which is an iterative one, is what leads you towards understanding what you actually want to make, whether you were aware of it or not at the beginning. Design is not merely about solving problems; it’s about discovering what the right problem to solve is and then solving it. Too often we fail not because we didn’t solve a problem well but because we solved the wrong problem.
When you skip the process of creation you trade the thing you could have learned to make for the simulacrum of the thing you thought you wanted to make. Being handed a baked and glazed artefact that approximates what you thought you wanted to make removes the very human element of discovery and learning that’s at the heart of any authentic practice of creation. Where you know everything about the thing you shaped into being from when it was just a lump of clay, you know nothing about the image of the thing you received for your penny from the vending machine.

Do you want to participate in destroying the environment even faster while ignoring copyright law, or leave your industry of 20+ years and try to find something else that may pay half as much?
That's basically the choice all developers are being given today.
I fucking hate it, and I fucking hate all the people who ignore all the externalities and damage and shrug "well it's inevitable."
Yeah, I'm in a bad mood.
... and now, the exciting conclusion:
I have for a few days now run Mistral-Vibe 2.0, an agentic developer cli, together with a locally hosted ~Devstral-2-Small LLM to see how much value a local coding assistant can bring.
The test I decided to do was to take an existing Java Swing application, developed as a single-file Java script (shebang at the top, runs interpreted) and just refactor it into a regular Java project with each class in its own file, in a package, with a build script.
The test failed. While it did get closer a few times than others, at no point was it successful in completing this task. I estimate in total it's been given 30 hours or so (!) of compute - while this task is of course something a junior developer can do in ~20 minutes.
Would giving this same task to a huge cloud model work better? Oh I'm sure - but that's an unsustainable business model and I'm more interested in reality ;) I'm not at all anti-AI though - I've given local models other simpler tasks before with good results. This is just where we are at the moment.

@shish Yes. This concerns me, as well.
We haven't seen the long term cost of the #AI tendency to copy/paste code rather than to import from libraries.
I am concerned that patching is going to return to an earlier meaning - we may need to find ways to address widespread code vulnerabilities not with package managers, but by sharing `patch` files while trying to find everywhere that needs them.
So... now that I have actually tried #vibecoding with a front end (rather than copy pasta from the engine like a savage ape)...
... let me just say this... Unless you have actually done this yourself... whatever opinion you might have, is... to say generously... amusing.
I use the analogy of virgins writing about sex. A very apt analogy I think, because what you THINK #vibecode is and what it actually is, is nothing like it.
And not surprisingly, you do have to know how to program to be an effective vibecoder.

CLAUDE.md is a file where you basically parametrise your entire project.
Some of the things I added of my own violition, that the engine seems to respect.
1. Set hard root in the project directory forbidding access to files above it.
Hopefuly, it will stop the trully catastrophic failure.
2. Created DOC directory, where the #AI writes any significant logic/algo/deltas for re-use later.
3. Create BACKUPS directory, where it writes a date stamped version of any code its about to change, so if it fucks something, it can roll back.
When I started #Vibecoding with #Claude the only way to do it was copy pasta from the browser #LLM ...
... the one thing few folk appreciate is just how fast new fetures, capabilities happen.
For a while now, Ive been noticing that the web version of #Anthropic #AI creates its own VM and works programming problems in there...
... so my workflow was;
- Prompt
- Copy pasta response into my VPN
- Update latest source in project (Copy pasta) so the engine doesnt lose latest version.
Wash rinse repeat. Often FTPing multiple files. Losing versions. It got a bit headfucky and timeconsuming....
... So Ive invested a few hours in setting up #Claudecode on my server.
Its so much faster and nicer!
The code is now worked in situ and code works on firsts go. It seems that the Claudecode fuck the logic far less.
Very impressed.

We have all the roadsigns of what happens in megalomania here. Inventing new terms for things that exist, naming your vibe agents like they’re a little town, that you feed by your benevolence of being able to afford a fuckton of tokens.

"The recently discovered sophisticated Linux malware framework known as VoidLink is assessed to have been developed by a single person with assistance from an artificial intelligence (AI) model.
That's according to new findings from Check Point Research, which identified operational security blunders by malware's author that provided clues to its developmental origins. The latest insight makes VoidLink one of the first instances of an advanced malware largely generated using AI.
"These materials provide clear evidence that the malware was produced predominantly through AI-driven development, reaching a first functional implant in under a week," the cybersecurity company said, adding it reached more than 88,000 lines of code by early December 2025.
VoidLink, first publicly documented last week, is a feature-rich malware framework written in Zig that's specifically designed for long-term, stealthy access to Linux-based cloud environments. The malware is said to have come from a Chinese-affiliated development environment. As of writing, the exact purpose of the malware remains unclear. No real-world infections have been observed to date.
A follow-up analysis from Sysdig was the first to highlight the fact that the toolkit may have been developed with the help of a large language model (LLM) under the directions of a human with extensive kernel development knowledge and red team experience, citing four different pieces of evidence -"

Cory Doctorow has a new post on the risks of AI generated code.
The whole article has his usual level of thoughtful insight, but this sentence was a particularly good reminder for me:
"Because AI is just a word-guessing program, because all it does is calculate the most probable word to go next, the errors it makes are especially subtle and hard to spot, because these bugs are nearly indistinguishable from working code."
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/jan/18/tech-ai-bubble-burst-reverse-centaur
'AI' Sucks the Joy Out of Programming
「 With an LLM-driven workflow, I’m getting all the bad parts about programming, like the stress generated by not being in control when things aren’t working, desperately trying to shoot bullets in the dark and fix unmaintainable code, and without any of the gratification, which comes from the journey itself. We’re replacing that journey and all the learning, with a dialogue with an inconsistent idiot 」

You will see sometimes (smart) folks on #mastodon speak authoritatively about #vibecoding and specifically about #debugging vibecode...
...Folks who have never actually #vibecoded or tried to use an #AI productively...
... they seem to think that you use the #LLM to cut the first version of code, then sit there like some goddamned savage ape, poking the code with a stick around a green screen fire. And opinionate 'wisely'.
... no, you use the model to debug too...
Here is what an actual fragment of a vibecode debug session may look like.
Had the joy of code reviewing an obviously vibe-coded pull request at work today. I sent it back asking for clarity on how it implemented access control. Got a comment back pointing me to a line of code that called the relevant function in our shared library. Sent it back again pointing out that, while it did call the function, it never checked the result.

🎸🐍💻 https://www.heise.de/news/Linus-Torvalds-wird-zum-Python-Vibe-Coder-11140648.html #Linux #Python #VibeCoding #KI #Newz

I don't have enough courage to let it lose on live machine...

All das ganze #Geschwafel zu #KRITIS ist für'n Arsch wenn #Netzbetreiber deren #Stromnetz-Steuerung in die fucking #Azure und #Oracle - "#Cloud" packen! [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

We launched a ton of fun projects this past year at @ivycyber and it's time to retire a few of them. First up is #vibecoding nightmare "Vibe Crap"💩

#vibecoding 'hack'
If you are not using #Claudecode #Cursor or another #AI integrated IDE.
Instead copy-pasta AI generated code like a goddamned savage banging the CPUs together...
Instead of burning compute generating each iteration of source...
#prompt for a shell script to patch the deltas instead. Doublecheck regexp. You are welcome.
#Vibecoding 'hack'.
Ive been whipping a dead horse for a few prompts. With this cog 3D object not rendering correctly. Z-That , Normal-This... blah blah blah... I want results.
So I just asked for a test file trying (arbitrary 8) different versions of render. #LLM went through different options, I just pick the McFatty McFatty burger from the menu thanks.
Ape smart.
Sigh... Why Humblebundle are you encouraging this behavior?

Oh dear. I accidentally commented on a Hacker News story in a way that was somewhat critical of vibe coding. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46421599
@AnotherJen I see so many websites / apps / services that can only be explained by devs^ never having used their own product to actually complete even the most basic of workflows from end to end, much less having good human-led UAT or automated test coverage 😩
and it’s only going to get worse with the rise of #VibeCoding – I also assume any testing that does get done by “AI” (🙄) will just be #VibeUAT… 🤪
^ and product managers, C*Os, DevRel folks, marketing folks, etc., etc.
As my company is evaluation the use of #Cursor I'm playing around with it. First expression is mixed.
Scratching my own itch, I thought of implementing a software tool which checks which books of a #HumbleBundle book bundle I already own. Initially again my HumbleBundle library and additionally against my #BookWyrm.
I started in the planning mode.
Cursor listed some steps on how to accomplish the task and asked me which language I would like to use.
Stating that I would use whatever is best suited, Cursor picked #Python.
Being cheeky and with my preferred use in mind I asked if a browser plugin wouldn't be better suited
(imagine that, looking at a bundle, the books you own are automatically highlighted)
No chance. Cursor was determined to stick with Python!
Ok, lets generate the project
1/n
The #Cursor prompt:
Remove the Bookwyrm code for now
removed nearly 300 lines of code and touched every file 😱
Removing "unnecessary" only deleted 6 lines (so the problem maybe wasn't as bad as I initially thought)
Remove all "game" related code surprisingly added on LOC, a comment.
But funny enough it made the code far clearer to understand. Where previously "gamekeys" were used now it was "order_keys". Additionally, the comment that the get_gamekeys() method returns all order keys was added (not sure if this is true)
Sidenote: Switching the variable naming to suddenly use an '_' is a bit strange.
OK let's try one more thing before wrapping up this experiment and start over with smaller steps.
Let's try to add UnitTests!

People who think #vibecoding is easy and deteriorates your thinking ability have absolutely NOT tried vibecoding any meaningfully moderate project.
Day two of my fast track learning about database maintenance and recovery.
In 15 years, when half of the worlds critical software is LLM-infested, indecipherable vibe-coded spaghetti, and there aren’t enough traditionally-trained software engineers to hire because the entry-level pipeline was strangled in 2025, and people my generation have all retired, well…
Well just remember I said this would happen.

💪 Zig quits GitHub, gripes about Microsoft's AI obsession // The Register
"After the CEO of GitHub said to 'embrace AI or get out', it seems the lackeys at Microsoft took the hint, because GitHub Actions started 'vibe-scheduling' – choosing jobs to run seemingly at random. Combined with other bugs and inability to manually intervene, this causes our CI system to get so backed up that not even master branch commits get checked."
