Canadian here so bear with me because I don’t fully understand US gun laws (nor do I understand their attachment TO guns).

What I do know is whenever there’s a mass shooting someone will bring up stricter gun control and the Right wing gun lovers shout “my freedom! You can’t take away my right to protect myself!”

Yet we are seeing a U.S. State attempt to criminalize the wearing of medical masks in all public spaces. Something that is quite literally “personal protective tool”. Why doesn’t our freedom to protect ourselves from infection as much as their freedom to carry a gun?

I can’t see any scenario where someone else would be harmed by an N95 - the same is NOT true for any gun. Yet one is being criminalized and the other isn’t.

I sincerely hope we start hearing more people speak out against criminalizing medical masks if for no other reason than the violation of freedom and bodily autonomy. You don’t have to care about Covid to understand that some people need to wear masks.

It is a very sad example of the state of the world when a person can walk into a pharmacy or grocery store with a gun - but not wearing a medical respirator DURING A PANDEMIC

      This:

In the year of the city 2274, the remnants of human civilization live in a sealed city beneath a cluster of geodesic domes, a utopia run by computer. The citizens live a hedonistic lifestyle, but when they turn 30 must enter the "Carrousel", a public ritual that destroys their bodies, under the pretense they would be "Renewed" or reborn.

2025 was the deadliest year on record for ICE.

People are dying in the camps.

        They’re dying in the streets.

US citizens have been shot and killed.

These are just the deaths we know about.

Then there’s the deaths you won’t hear as much about.

The disabled. The vulnerable. The homeless or anyone labelled “expendable”.

Never forget that fascism and eugenics go hand in hand.

My latest is about Wael Tarabishi, a 30 year old disabled US citizen who relied on his father for full time care.

ICE grabbed Maher when he showed up for his yearly immigration check in.

Wael pleaded for his release. He told ICE he would die without his caregiver.

They didn’t care. Wael died three months later.

His dad never got to say goodbye.

His story deserves to be told.

ICE ensured his last months were filled with unnecessary pain and suffering.

        They killed Wael:

If you want to understand the horrifying future these tech billionaire nazis have in store for humanity, it helps to understand what parts of our "glorious past" as a species they're looking to recreate. This interview with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign information sciences and media studies professor Anita Say Chan talks a bit about the history of data and eugenics, what it means that guys like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel (along with most of Silicon Valley's movers and shakers) are devout believers in eugenicist philosophies, and how that's reflected in their efforts to reshape society in horrifying, and objectively fascist ways. In terms of our discussion about the uber rich fascists who heavily influence the Trump regime they bought and paid for, I'm mostly including this here to point out that these guys have gone on record in support of a lot of openly fascist shit and for the most part, your media pretends we don't already know these guys are nazis; it's not a secret, it's just not "worth mentioning" when media orgs are fawning over technofascist billionaires destroying our planet and our lives.

Eugenics Isn’t Dead—It’s Thriving in Tech

"Big Tech successors like Musk and PayPal billionaire-turned-arms dealer Peter Thiel have overtly promoted fraudulent race science, with Musk amplifying users on X who argue that people of European descent are biologically superior. In response to another user’s deleted post suggesting that students at historically Black institutions have lower IQs, Musk posted, “It will take an airplane crashing and killing hundreds of people for them to change this crazy policy of DIE”—diversity, equity, and inclusion, misspelled. In 2016, Thiel buddied up to a prominent white nationalist, and, the same year, was said by a Stanford dorm-mate to have complimented South Africa’s “economically sound” system of racial apartheid."

Over the past eight or so years, I've been asked on numerous occasions how I could be so certain that Trumpworld and the right wing authoritarian tech billionaires that are funding the movement were literally fascists. The simple answer to that question is because I know where the ideas that motivate them and animate their movement come from. As openly fascistic as the Trump regime's exercise of power has been so far, if you peel back a single layer to look at the people providing the ideological framework for those activities, you almost always find literal nazis.

Take for example the Trump regime's frequently self-identified "war on woke." On its face, the collection of policies and activities used to wage the "war on woke" so far have been fundamentally Christian Nationalist, white supremacist, patriarchal, and eliminationist in nature. If however you peel back the top surface of this "war" you find three major ideological propagandists driving the entire agenda: specifically Peter Boghossian, Christopher Rufo, and Richard Hanania; whose frankly odious ideas have had a huge influence on the Republican Party, and the Trump administration. These three have waged a war on higher education, diversity, and the very concept of racial or gender equality, that is expressly endorsed by most of the same far right billionaires who paid to make Trump president; including Marc Andressen, Peter Thiel, David Sacks, and Vivek Ramaswamy. So what happens if you peel back another layer of this fascist onion to find out who is funding and promoting guys like Hanania, Rufo, and Boghossian? You find a rich cracker tech bro, and a eugenicist running a recently rebranded foundation that supports white supremacists, promotes scientific racism, and was literally founded by Nazis. No, really:

Trump’s War on ‘Woke’ and DEI: Incubated by a Nazi Eugenics Foundation

"The ‘war on woke’ did not suddenly appear. It is an idea deeply rooted in a form of scientific racism that has been laundered into the mainstream over decades by the Pioneer Fund and right-wing activists connected with this group.

This nexus of ties to Pioneer Fund entities and ideology throws new light on how the Trump administration’s attacks on DEI are the fruit of a broader white supremacist endeavour inspired by Nazi-aligned ideology.

It also suggests that the increasing normalisation of the Nazi salute by Elon Musk, Steve Bannon, and others is not an accident either – but a signal; one we would do well not to ignore."

Unfortunately this article is a long read, and it's easy to get bogged down in the idea that the problem here is the "ancient" history of the Human Diversity Foundation/Pioneer Diveristy fund, but if you keep reading the author is very clear that the politics and priorities of the foundation, haven't changed much in the modern era.

"But last year, Hope Not Hate revealed that a network of white supremacist activists was secretly rehabilitating the Pioneer Fund under the new Human Diversity Foundation brand identity.

The aim has been to normalise the Pioneer Fund’s Nazi-aligned scientific racism in the mainstream through the notion of open debate and ‘free’ inquiry. Scientific racism has been rebranded as the story of ‘human biodiversity’.

The key funder supporting this initiative was revealed to be American technology entrepreneur Andrew Conru, who donated $1.3 million to the HDF. Around the same time, Conru was also funding the most influential conservative voices attacking DEI and ‘critical race theory’ – Christopher Rufo, Peter Boghossian, and Richard Hanania.

HDF’s magazine, Aporia, was founded by British far-right activist Matthew Frost. Conru’s donation provided him with a 15% stake in the group. It has defended Richard Lynn’s pseudoscientific racism, published an interview with Nazi sympathiser Jared Taylor, and in 2024 claimed that racial stereotypes are “reasonably accurate”.

Hope Not Hate’s undercover reporting recorded far-right activists associated with the HDF calling for “remigration” – the ‘mass removal of ethnic minorities’.

Kirkegaard is the long-time editor of the Pioneer Fund-backed eugenics journal Mankind Quarterly, a founding board member of which was Nazi eugenicist Otmar von Verscheur – who taught and mentored Josef Mengele, the notorious Nazi SS officer known as the ‘Angel of Death’ for performing medical experiments at Auschwitz.

In 2023, both Kirkegaard and Frost attended a notorious neo-Nazi gathering known as the “Scandza Forum” in Estonia, hosted by Scandinavian neo-Nazi Fróði Midjord. The conference was that year renamed ‘Guide to Kulchur’ after a book by Nazi sympathiser and Holocaust supporter Ezra Pound.

Kirkegaard inherited the assets of the Pioneer Fund from its former long-time president Richard Lynn before he died in July 2023."

Do you remember that shadowy network of white supremacist "race science" and eugenics revivalists running a rebranded Pioneer Fund that we talked about being behind the ideologues fueling Trump's "War on Woke" back in late April? Well noted "enlightened centrist" dipshit intellectual Steven Pinker just turned up on a podcast for the (now renamed to) Human Diversity Foundation's magazine Aporia, and to the surprise of no one who has been paying attention to Pinker's career for any length of time, cited Douglas Murray and helped normalize garbage pro-"scientific racism" propaganda.

                      theguardian.com/science/2025/j

Harvard author Steven Pinker appears on podcast linked to scientific racism

"During the podcast, Pinker expressed agreement with claims made by Charles Murray, the author of The Bell Curve, a prominent figure in the “human biodiversity” movement that seeks to promote race-based theories of intelligence, and like Pinker a one-time participant in a human biodiversity email list convened by Steve Sailer.

When Carl cited “evidence collected by sociologists like Charles Murray suggesting that part of the family breakdown in some communities in America seems to be attributable to the state taking over the traditional function of the father”, Pinker responded: “I think that is a problem.” He added: “It is a huge class-differentiated phenomenon, as Murray and others write it out.”

Reporting last October in the Guardian revealed that Aporia operates within a broader network of groups and individuals seeking to mainstream racial pseudoscience.

The initiative had been secretly funded by US tech entrepreneur Andrew Conru until he was contacted for comment on the reporting, and Aporia’s editors are connected to far-right extremists, including Erik Ahrens, whom German authorities have designated a “rightwing extremist” posing an “extremely high” danger.

The investigation also found that Aporia was owned by the Human Diversity Foundation, a Wyoming LLC founded in 2022 by Emil Kirkegaard, a Danish self-described eugenicist and race scientist who has spent years attempting to access genetic datasets, and maintaining publishing platforms including OpenPsych and Mankind Quarterly that serve a network of race-science researchers."

As one of Pinker's many longtime critics in left wing discourse, part of the reason I'm sharing this story is a giant middle finger to all the "Very Serious People TM" in our society who kept insisting it was unreasonable to say that vapid fraud was promoting a foundationally colonialist, white supremacist view of society, human development, and the world at large; we told you folks he was basically Niall Ferguson for "centrists" and this is absolutely where Pinker's career was always headed. Yet another celebrity intellectual who barfs up platitudes about the status quo that affluent white Americans love, turns out to be not just "asking questions" but the full blown cracker supremacist scholars on the left warned you he was. Maybe the gatekeepers of our larger discourse should stop showering praise on folks who kiss the ruling class's asses if they also think Charles Murray had some valid ideas worth exploring? Who can say.

The other reason I'm sharing this story however, is that The Guardian, one of the few outlets who actually covered the international network of race science activists behind the Human Diversity Foundation and the US techbro nazi who was funding the project at the time, is kind of minimizing how odious and career-ending what Pinker just did should be. Formerly named the Pioneer fund, the organization behind this podcast was originally founded to spread Nazi ideology in America for the actual Third Reich, and the folks running it now are literally hardcore neo-nazis and white supremacists who actively promote bunk "race science," eugenicist ideology, and argue for the mass expulsion of nonwhite people from the Imperial Core. This isn't like the dumber Cuomo brother having Steve Bannon on his show to disseminate Trump's lies, this is a lot more like letting Andrew Anglin interview you for a Daily Stormer podcast. In a Pig Empire that wasn't already drunk on fascist ideology, this should absolutely be career-ending for Steven Pinker; whether it will be in the really real world we live in where lots of nazis are still welcome and celebrated in our public discourse, is a lot harder to predict.

A few inchoate thoughts on Gas Town, since I think this example has more to it than “it’s just a meth binge/crypto scam/one-shot AI poisoning”. Part of the reason I think this is that some of the rhetoric it deploys dovetails perfectly with broader trends and phenomena, and I think it's worth pulling those out.

                          1. Economists from the physiocrats (18th century) onward promised society freedom from material deprivation and hard physical labor in exchange for submitting to an economic arrangement of society
                          2. In a country like the US, material deprivation and hard physical labor have been significantly reduced since then:

                          • Though too many clearly still suffer too much, a large proportion of people live free from fear of starvation or lack of shelter
                          • The US has deindustralized, meaning hard physical labor is not the reality for a lot of people. For a lot of people labor is emotional or symbolic (“knowledge work”)
                          • In other words, for lots of people the economic promise has been fulfilled
                          3. Having to think hard is one of the service economy’s analogs for hard physical labor. If the promise of economics is to be continually pursued--meaning it maintains the promise that if we collectively submit to it, in exchange we will enjoy a freedom--a natural target of the promise is providing freedom from the need to think hard
                          • It is not coincidental that “Gas Town”’s announcement post mentioned Towers of Hanoi, an undergraduate CS student homework problem that for most students requires thinking hard. It’s designed to encourage a kind of “eureka” moment where recursion as a computer programming technique becomes more clear. GT claims to fulfill the promise of not having to think hard like this anymore: the LLMs will do that thinking for you
                          • It is not coincidental that Gas Town is described as being very expensive. Economic power in the form of asset accumulation is what earns you freedom in this way of conceiving things. If you want the freedom from having to think hard, you’d better accumulate assets
                          • Since the promise is greater collective freedom, endeavoring to accumulate assets is, in this view, a collective good
                          • This differs from effective altruism and other “do good by doing well” conceptions. Rather, the very mechanism of economics produces collective wealth, so the story goes, which means the more active one is as an economic agent, the more collective good one produces (“wealth” and “good” being conflated)
                          • Accumulation of assets is the scorecard, so to speak, of such enhanced economic activity, and the individual reward can then be freedom from having to think hard
                          4. Expending significant resources is viewed as a good in itself from a (naive) evolutionary perspective
                          • Lotka’s maximum power principle (supposedly) dictates that those entities that transform the most power into useful organization are most fit from an evolutionary standpoint
                          • Ernst Juenger’s notion of “total mobilization” brings this principle to politics/political economy/geopolitics: those nations that “totally” mobilize their national resources are the ones that will dominate geopolitically
                          • See, for instance, the RAND Corporation’s Commission on the National Defense Strategy: “The Commission finds that the U.S. military lacks both the capabilities and the capacity required to be confident it can deter and prevail in combat. It needs to do a better job of incorporating new technology at scale; field more and higher-capability platforms, software, and munitions; and deploy innovative operational concepts to employ them together better.” (emphasis mine). In summary: the US is about to be outcompeted (lacks fitness); in response, it should go big (“at scale”, “more”) in an organized way (“deploy innovative operational concepts”, “employ them together better”)
                          • The rhetoric around LLM-based AI includes similar language, exemplified in the GT post: burn through as much infrastructural resources as possible to produce organized outputs “at scale”, while avoiding having human beings think too hard to produce those outputs, an indication that the power was burned to produce useful organization
                          • LLM-based AI plays a prominent role in US federal government strategy, particularly military strategy, with language about dominance serving to justify its use
                          • It is not coincidental that Gas Town uses many orders of magnitude more resources to solve the Towers of Hanoi problem (“Burn All The Gas” Town). This rhetoric dovetails perfectly with the “total mobilization” concept

@GhostOnTheHalfShell it’s worse than that… going back to the roots of (after Herzl essentially):

European Zionist colonization of was built on explicit racial hierarchies and . Arthur Ruppin (Zionism’s dirty little secret), director of the Office and architect of Zionist settlement from 1908, promoted pseudoscientific race theories claiming original Jews were non-Semitic “Aryans” who had been corrupted by intermarriage with “inferior” Semitic peoples. Ruppin applied eugenic selection to all Jews - Eastern European, North African, Yemenite, and Ethiopian etc - “admitting” into the “Altneuland” only those deemed racially fit “human material” while rejecting those he classified as degenerate.

The colonization of Palestine was meant for him before the holocaust as a home for racially pure Jews. Sephardic Jews like Herzl were already too assimilated and impure. In fact his racial theories - developed through collaboration with racial theorists and later were quoted in Nazi propaganda justifying the Nuremberg Laws - classified Herzl’s nose as “Assyrian-Bukharan” and categorized other Ashkenazi Jews with racialized classifications including “Ashkenazi-Negroid.” In Palestine this biological racism became institutionalized through settlement policies that systematically discriminated against Jews deemed racially inferior. He was the mentor of Zionist leaders like Ben Gurion, and if you know anything about Golda Meir, you’d know she wasn’t too far off from Rupin’s eugenicist swamp both in her views of Arabs and Muslims as well as Arab Jews. Zionism in this context is highly racialized.

Must add that all changed after the , when the Zionist movement found itself with six million fewer European Jews and turned to North African and Middle Eastern Jewish communities to supply the labor and population needed for the colonization of Palestine.

At the time of Maher’s detention, disability advocates warned that taking away Wael’s caregiver put his life at risk.

Wael died on Friday at age 30.

He didn’t even get to say goodbye to his father.

ICE caused his death & unnecessary suffering.

Now they’re refusing to allow Maher to attend the funeral.

                              Absolute ghouls.

A woman in Minnesota was trying to get to a doctors appointment when she drove down a street where an ICE protest was occurring.

Today in Labor History January 1, 1934: A "Law for the Prevention of Genetically Diseased Offspring" went into effect in Nazi Germany. The Eugenics research that Hitler used to justify torture and genocide was inspired by similar research from the U.S. The American eugenics movement originated in the 1880s, from the biological determinist ideas of Francis Galton. He believed that selective breeding could improve the human race and allow them to direct their own evolution. The U.S. eugenics movement was heavily funded by the Carnegie Institution, Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune. Biologist Charles B. Davenport founded the Eugenics Record Office (ERO) in 1911. The ERO trained field workers, who they sent to study people in mental hospitals and orphanages across the U.S. Davenport and others began to lobby for solutions to the problem of the "unfit." They lobbied for immigration restrictions and sterilization. Some even promoted the idea of extermination, well before Hitler became known for it. Some well-known eugenicists of the early 20th century included Alexander Graham Bell, Luther Burbank and Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger. The eugenics movement tended to target the poor, people with disabilities and mental illness, and communities of color as “unfit” for society. Their solutions included forced sterilization, which continued in the U.S. until as recently as 2010. From 1997-2010, California performed nonconsensual sterilizations on roughly 1,400 women prisoners. From 1929-1973, North Carolina sterilized the third highest number of people in the United States, roughly 7,600 people, predominantly African American women.

We had a nice dinner after a short walk together. 3 months after this photo was taken, Dad had to go to ER for a leg muscles issue. He was infected with covid by unmasked hospital staff. It happened shortly after our eugenics government removed public masking mandates. Dad ended up dying from covid related cardiac arrest, the following Summer.

I have never forgiven the or staff for killing my Dad. We had him fully protected with home for years. It took less than 2 days in hospital for him to get .

Please . Please don't let my Dad & others who died from getting covid from unmasked people, to be forgotten. It could be you or your family members, next. Covid doesn't care if you believe in it or not - it will end up wrecking your life, one way or another.

Karl Pearson, statistician and fellow purveyor of eugenicist methods, approached research with a similar ethos: “theorizing about the material basis of heredity or the precise physiological or causal significance of observational results, Pearson argues, will do nothing but damage the progress of the science” (Pence, 2011). In collaborative work with Pearson, Weldon emphasised the superiority of data-driven methods which were capable of delivering truths about nature “without introducing any theory” (Weldon, 1895).

We hold up the renewed emergence of physiognomic methods, facilitated by ML, as a case study in the harmful repercussions of ML-laundered junk science. A summary and analysis of several such studies is delivered, with attention to the means by which unsound research lends itself to social harms. We explore some of the many factors contributing to poor practice in applied ML. In conclusion, we offer resources for research best practices to developers and practitioners.

Survival of the fittest refers to those with the capacity to adapt.

Not those who are the strongest or the most healthy.

I’m a fighter. We all are.

He firmly believes he’s better than someone like me, despite having lost his moral compass ages ago

We all have worth. We all have value. No one is expendable.
As soon as we allow people to debate the worth of other’s within society, we’ve lost.

We must work together to ensure our most vulnerable are taken care of, because in doing so we build a safer and more inclusive society for everyone.

This conversation inspired me to write an article about why we undervalue the lives of disabled people.

My “friend” may have been unique in his bluntness, but many people think this way.

They vote for it. They support it. We deserve better:

                                                                                                                                                              Ableism is everywhere.

We thought it wasn’t “that bad”.

If we had that much ableism to work through, then so does everyone else.

That’s why we need strong allies.

We need people who will say disabled lives matter.

Our governments just opted to go cognitive dissonance route/eugenics style of public health failures instead. We are still seeing too many covid & long covid patients in health care. I work in health care. Our government is lying to the public & I wish more media wasn't so willing to aid/abet these public health failures.

It’s as influential as it’s ever been, echoed in proclamations from Trump that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and the new pronatalist movement led by people like Malcolm and Simone Collins. It’s also at the very heart of the TESCREAL movement, which is what launched the current race to build “basically a digital god,” in Musk’s words, that could replace humanity. Once you realize that eugenics is still dancing, you’ll notice it everywhere. In many ways, the current zeitgeist is imbued by eugenics ideologies, much of it fueled by racist, sexist, classist, and even anti-human attitudes. Yikes."

He’s suggested that murdering children up to 6 years old may be morally acceptable, that animals like pigs have no conscious experiences, that ASI (artificial superintelligence) could destroy humanity by synthesizing artificial mind-control bacteria, that nearly everyone on Earth should be “allowed to die” to prevent ASI from being built in the near future, that he might have secretly bombed Wuhan to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic, that he once “acquired a sex slave … who will earn her orgasms by completing math assignments,” and that he’d be willing to sacrifice “all of humanity” to create god-like superintelligences wandering the universe.

Yudkowsky also believes — like, really really believes — that he’s an absolute genius, and said back in 2000 that the reason he wakes up in the morning is because he’s “the only one who” can “save the world.” Yudkowsky is, to put it mildly, an egomaniac. Worse, he’s an egomaniac who’s frequently wrong despite being wildly overconfident about his ideas. He claims to be a paragon of rationality, but so far as I can tell he’s a fantastic example of the Dunning-Kruger effect paired with messianic levels of self-importance. As discussed below, he’s been prophesying the end of the world since the 1990s, though most of his prophesied dates of doom have passed without incident.

This is not just an anti-vaccination meme; it's an attempt to subordinate an entire class of people, suggesting they are subhuman for being who they are. This is a eugenic move. One has to wonder whether the "human services" people in HHS imagine themselves providing has to do with "improving the human stock" of the nation, the services not being provided to humans but instead having humans as an output.

Rather than get mired in the thought-terminating arguments around political parties or political factions, though, I think we'd do well to reflect on what sorts of other ways of thinking feed into this one: the measured life; standardized testing; the internet of things (sensors); tracking apps of various kinds; electronic health records; data science as a profession and Big Data generally; predictive modeling; generative AI and other optimization-oriented or productivity-promising technology. All of these function to render life as an object of knowledge in one way or another. All of them trace their origins through eugenics and the patterns of thought that led to it, and all of them threaten to enable and enhance further eugenic thinking. This is not to say these things are always all bad; this is meant to be a reflection on what exactly they're for.

Why read the number of steps your FitBit told you you took today, unless there were some sense in which you want your future self to be better than your present self? It's not an accident that this is called "physical fitness", "fitness" being the Darwinian concept describing which organisms should survive. Why subject children to standardized testing unless there were some belief it made them better students? To what end tends to be left out. Why adopt a technology meant to improve productivity, unless you're of the belief that improvement (optimization) were even possible?

Generally speaking, if one is able to bring oneself to believe that a human being is made better by a data-informed technical intervention, isn't one playing the same game as these anti-autism anti-vaxxers, just with different terminology? If your answer to this provocation is that your data is better than theirs or that you're more aligned with reality than they are--some variation of "the science is on our side"--you've ceded the territory: this is more of the same optimization logic that brought us to this point to begin with. I think we have no choice but to do better than this.

                                                                                                                                                                                That's my reflection anyway.

Google, the bastion of big data, was founded by two Stanford graduate students; Stanford was founded by a eugenicist and instituted eugenics principles. Francis Galton--inventor of the regression analysis that forms the backbone of data science--was "hot or notting" London with a counter hidden in his pocket long before Harvard-age Zuckerberg recuperated the same with the favorite quantification technology of our day, computers.

"The measured life" is a eugenics concept. All these doohickeys that collect data with the promise of making your body a bit more "fit"? Eugenicist in origin. Eugenics is about "optimizing" the physical "fitness" of people. Apps that help you learn, make you more mentally "fit"? Also have origins in eugenics. Eugenics is also about "optimizing" the mental "fitness" of people. Hence the obsession with IQ.

This isn't to say you shouldn't take care of your body and mind in whichever ways you want. I do think it's important, though, to periodically reflect on, and ask yourself hard questions about, what's driving those efforts and what the goals really are. Part of understanding why eugenics thinking is resurging so hard and fast in the US is understanding its roots, where that type of thinking comes from. It's also important to reflect on where the apps and devices you use to achieve these goals come from. How many come directly or indirectly from Stanford, which was built by eugenicists to achieve eugenic goals, and its offshoots?

Trump and Musk are literally repeating themes from Francis Galton's eugenics out in the open now. They're confident they can get away with it without pushback because the ground was laid long ago. But eugenics didn't suddenly become bad again because coarse people started saying the quiet part out loud. It's always been bad thinking, bad science, and bad morality.

I think the expressions by tech leaders of open hostility towards workers and users, as well as the open embrace of -- which is fundamentally a hateful ideology -- by so many tech leaders go partway towards explaining this shift. My read is that folks are sensing that the sector has become hostile to most people, and the experience of that sensation is that the magic is gone, or the products aren't interesting, or it's not fun anymore, etc. I would say that something more sinister is going on.

I'm thinking of Adobe's recent move to force artists to use the AI features in their products, under the threat they are "not going to be successful" if they don't; or Rosetta announcing that linguists need to use Rosetta's AI features or face the "extinction" of the languages they work on.

It's a short step from "extinction"/"unsuccessful" ("low fitness") to "elimination". The latter word is what is meant. The passive voice/inevitability framing purposely obscures the agency of the literal, nameable human beings who are attempting to bring this reality into existence. "Embrace or we will do our best to eliminate your profession, your livelihood, and you" is more precise and brings out the hostility of the threat these corporate statements attempt to hide.

This dehumanizing and ultimately eugenic idea frequently hides in plain sight like this. Sometimes evolutionary or genetic language and metaphors are used. Don't accept it. These folks may try to create this reality but that doesn't mean they'll succeed and it doesn't mean we need to surrender and let them succeed.
