“You’re not fun anymore”
This was one of the last things a friend said to me before ghosting me over my disabilities & covid caution.
My wearing a mask? Not fun
My being bedbound? Not fun
My inability to travel? Not fun
She then said “I don’t know how you can live this way”
Almost everyone with chronic illness experiences this at some point.
Many ableds want us to hide our disabilities.
They want us to be the same as we were before because it makes things more comfortable for them.
If we show them the depths of our suffering?
They can’t cope.
They see us as better off dead.
Let me be perfectly clear… we live this way because we have no choice.
No one taps you on the shoulder and asks if you’re ok with becoming disabled.
No one gets your consent before stripping you of your health and leaving you bed bound.
It just happens. It can occur in the blink of an eye, and there’s not a damn thing we can do about it.
We can’t just go to the doctor and demand to be “fixed”.
We have to adapt. We have to grieve. We have to learn to accept our new life and find ways to cope.
Is it fun? Of course not.
Is it necessary? Yes.
Does it mean we aren’t fun anymore? No.
We’re still the same people we were before we became ill, our bodies just don’t function the way they used to.
We still experience joy and sadness. We still crave human connection.
People who decide we aren’t “fun anymore” are missing out on all the joy and friendship we have to offer.
They’re also denying the reality of the human condition:
Disability happens to almost everyone eventually.
It’s a minority group you can join at any time.
Chronic illness isn’t “fun”. I’m not going to lie and say otherwise.
It’s a difficult life filled with pain, sadness and a lot of disappointment.
But there can also be so much joy, and my former friend’s inability to see that is a poor reflection on her, not me.
We must stop treating people like commodities.
We must stop acting like their value is tied up in what they can produce or their physical ability.
We all have value.
We all have worth.
We all have things that light us up.
I was angry at this person for a long time.
I did so much for them over the years and then got tossed aside like garbage when I was no longer useful.
I’m trying to let the anger go.
I’m trying to remind myself that anyone who can’t love me as I am isn’t worth my time.
It’s not easy.
The pain we experience when people abandon us is real and adds insult to very real injury.
But I promise you there are better days ahead.
There are people who will stick by you no matter what.
People who won’t make you hide your pain and suffering.
There are people who will show up for you and accept you as you are.
Who will wear a mask, hold your hand in the hospital or visit you when you’re laying in bed.
Cherish those people. Nurture those relationships. Make sure they know how much it means to you.
If you’ve read this far and have a disabled person in your life, please reach out to them.
Say hi. Ask how they are. Offer to visit or provide some help. Show up for them.
Never underestimate the power of a small act of kindness, and refuse to leave people behind.

If we trusted that they were the experts in their bodies?
If we listened when they said they could do something, and supported them when they said they couldn’t.
If we gave accommodations and assistance without judgment?
That’s true inclusion.
It’s Disability Pride Month and I’m mourning one of our elders…. Alice Wong.
Every year on July 1st she would talk about disabled rage.
She would remind us that it’s ok to be angry at the eugenicist, capitalist, patriarchal system we’re trapped in.
She would encourage us to embrace our disabilities AND our anger.
She would give us permission to be our true selves… to refuse to hide for the comfort of others.
She passed away last November but left an indelible mark on our community.
I want to honour her this month by continuing the tradition she started and inviting all my disabled peers to be proud, unapologetically themselves and angry if that’s what they feel.
Don’t hide.
Don’t smile and say “I’m fine” when you’re in pain.
Don’t settle for being treated as “less than”.
Don’t let the bastards grind you down.

I’ve had a huge health setback following my move.
My level of function is half what it was before.
The hospital said they would connect me with “resources” to assist with activities of daily living.
There’s a 1.5 year wait list.
MAiD was offered in under a month.
I don’t want to die.
I don’t want to allow the government to euthanize me.
But this is eugenics I’m always talking about.
I need assistance to survive. Help with cooking & cleaning.
The supports don’t exist unless you have a ton of money.
When you try and push your body to do it yourself, you get worse.
If you end up in hospital, they suggest assisted dying.
Am I “free” to say no? Of course.
Does it feel that way when nothing else is being offered?
Not at all.
I’m being denied the support to live while “offered” death.
That’s coercion.
It’s eugenics.
The system has decided I’m not worth saving.
I’m not alone in this.
Disabled people urgently need allies and support in this fight.
And I need some home care.

Nothing prepares you for the loneliness that comes with being chronically ill.
The grief of realizing the medical system can’t (or won’t) help you.
The pain of being abandoned by family & friends.
The isolation of knowing we’re in a eugenics nightmare that most don’t see until it’s too late.
I’ve got a friend who was non functional after a few hours with a GI bug.
I gently pointed out their symptoms matched the ones I deal with every single day.
Their response?
“You’re used to it. It’s not the same”.
That’s how disabled people are treated in a nutshell.
Our suffering is minimized.
The ableds suffering is always worse. Always more severe. Always “worthy” of pity. Always random and never their fault.
Our suffering is something to be adapted to. Something we could fix if we “tried harder”. Something we brought on ourselves.
It’s a disgusting double standard that exists to help the non disabled avoid facing the uncomfortable reality that one day they will lose their health.
It doesn’t matter how fit you are, how hard you work or that you do everything “right”.
You can become disabled at any time
Blaming the disabled for losing their health early in life won’t stop bad things from happening to you.
It’ll just help prop up a system that sees people as worthless the second they become “non productive”.
It’ll just assist the elites in developing eugenicist policies.
Almost everyone becomes disabled.
Disability justice impacts all of us.
Fight with us for better social supports. Better safety nets. Universal healthcare. Paid time off.
Don’t leave us behind.

Listen more to the voices of pregnant oppressed Indigenous women & less to voices of unoppressed non-Indigenous women. The former have valid, justified fears of hospitals because of the fact that countless pregnant Indigenous women received involuntary surgeries to render them unable to give birth again. Others had their babies stolen from them, without consent or any prior consultations. I've listened to many personal horror stories about this - from my mid-20s to now.
Canada only ended its cultural genocide/eugenics on Indigenous on paper. They never really stopped their attempts to genocide Indigenous peoples. I am not being dramatic about this. It is a fact. A fact that almost all settlers conveniently choose to ignore.

Thankfully a doctor heard him yelling and came to look in on me and instantly realized something was wrong
Within hours I was being rushed to a larger hospital for emergency surgery
I had been bleeding internally the entire time and developed a huge infected abscess
Had they treated me earlier, my survival odds would have been much better
Instead I very nearly lost my life and ended up spending a month in the hospital
I was one of the lucky ones
No one’s survival should ever be based on luck, race, money or privilege
Yet more often than not those things determine who lives and who dies
My heart is heavy for Heather and all who knew and loved her
We must do better
We must believe and listen to patients
We must strive to treat everyone equally

2. In a country like the US, material deprivation and hard physical labor have been significantly reduced since then:
- Though too many clearly still suffer too much, a large proportion of people live free from fear of starvation or lack of shelter
- The US has deindustralized, meaning hard physical labor is not the reality for a lot of people. For a lot of people labor is emotional or symbolic (“knowledge work”)
- In other words, for lots of people the economic promise has been fulfilled
- It is not coincidental that “Gas Town”’s announcement post mentioned Towers of Hanoi, an undergraduate CS student homework problem that for most students requires thinking hard. It’s designed to encourage a kind of “eureka” moment where recursion as a computer programming technique becomes more clear. GT claims to fulfill the promise of not having to think hard like this anymore: the LLMs will do that thinking for you
- It is not coincidental that Gas Town is described as being very expensive. Economic power in the form of asset accumulation is what earns you freedom in this way of conceiving things. If you want the freedom from having to think hard, you’d better accumulate assets
- Since the promise is greater collective freedom, endeavoring to accumulate assets is, in this view, a collective good
- This differs from effective altruism and other “do good by doing well” conceptions. Rather, the very mechanism of economics produces collective wealth, so the story goes, which means the more active one is as an economic agent, the more collective good one produces (“wealth” and “good” being conflated)
- Accumulation of assets is the scorecard, so to speak, of such enhanced economic activity, and the individual reward can then be freedom from having to think hard
- Lotka’s maximum power principle (supposedly) dictates that those entities that transform the most power into useful organization are most fit from an evolutionary standpoint

- The rhetoric around LLM-based AI includes similar language, exemplified in the GT post: burn through as much infrastructural resources as possible to produce organized outputs “at scale”, while avoiding having human beings think too hard to produce those outputs, an indication that the power was burned to produce useful organization
- LLM-based AI plays a prominent role in US federal government strategy, particularly military strategy, with language about dominance serving to justify its use
- It is not coincidental that Gas Town uses many orders of magnitude more resources to solve the Towers of Hanoi problem (“Burn All The Gas” Town). This rhetoric dovetails perfectly with the “total mobilization” concept

I've lost the reference, but I suspect it was Meredith Whittaker who's written and spoken about the big data turn at Google, where it was understood that having and collecting massive datasets allowed them to eschew model-building.
The core idea being critiqued here is that there's a kind of scientific view from nowhere: a theory-free, value-free, model-free, bias-free way of observing the world that will lead to Truth; and that it's the task of the scientist to approximate this view from nowhere as well as possible.

A summary and analysis of several such studies is delivered, with attention to the means by which unsound research lends itself to social harms. Rather than get mired in the thought-terminating arguments around political parties or political factions, though, I think we'd do well to reflect on what sorts of other ways of thinking feed into this one: the measured life; standardized testing; the internet of things (sensors); tracking apps of various kinds; electronic health records; data science as a profession and Big Data generally; predictive modeling; generative AI and other optimization-oriented or productivity-promising technology. All of these function to render life as an object of knowledge in one way or another. All of them trace their origins through eugenics and the patterns of thought that led to it, and all of them threaten to enable and enhance further eugenic thinking. This is not to say these things are always all bad; this is meant to be a reflection on what exactly they're for.
Why read the number of steps your FitBit told you you took today, unless there were some sense in which you want your future self to be better than your present self? It's not an accident that this is called "physical fitness", "fitness" being the Darwinian concept describing which organisms should survive. Why subject children to standardized testing unless there were some belief it made them better students? To what end tends to be left out. Why adopt a technology meant to improve productivity, unless you're of the belief that improvement (optimization) were even possible?
Generally speaking, if one is able to bring oneself to believe that a human being is made better by a data-informed technical intervention, isn't one playing the same game as these anti-autism anti-vaxxers, just with different terminology? If your answer to this provocation is that your data is better than theirs or that you're more aligned with reality than they are--some variation of "the science is on our side"--you've ceded the territory: this is more of the same optimization logic that brought us to this point to begin with. I think we have no choice but to do better than this.
That's my reflection anyway.

There's a nearly straight line from 20th century eugenics to 21st century big data and data science. Google, the bastion of big data, was founded by two Stanford graduate students; Stanford was founded by a eugenicist and instituted eugenics principles. Francis Galton--inventor of the regression analysis that forms the backbone of data science--was "hot or notting" London with a counter hidden in his pocket long before Harvard-age Zuckerberg recuperated the same with the favorite quantification technology of our day, computers.
"The measured life" is a eugenics concept. All these doohickeys that collect data with the promise of making your body a bit more "fit"? Eugenicist in origin. Eugenics is about "optimizing" the physical "fitness" of people. Apps that help you learn, make you more mentally "fit"? Also have origins in eugenics. Eugenics is also about "optimizing" the mental "fitness" of people. Hence the obsession with IQ.
This isn't to say you shouldn't take care of your body and mind in whichever ways you want. I do think it's important, though, to periodically reflect on, and ask yourself hard questions about, what's driving those efforts and what the goals really are. Part of understanding why eugenics thinking is resurging so hard and fast in the US is understanding its roots, where that type of thinking comes from. It's also important to reflect on where the apps and devices you use to achieve these goals come from. How many come directly or indirectly from Stanford, which was built by eugenicists to achieve eugenic goals, and its offshoots?
Trump and Musk are literally repeating themes from Francis Galton's eugenics out in the open now. They're confident they can get away with it without pushback because the ground was laid long ago. It's a short step from "extinction"/"unsuccessful" ("low fitness") to "elimination". The latter word is what is meant. The passive voice/inevitability framing purposely obscures the agency of the literal, nameable human beings who are attempting to bring this reality into existence. "Embrace #AI or we will do our best to eliminate your profession, your livelihood, and you" is more precise and brings out the hostility of the threat these corporate statements attempt to hide.
This dehumanizing and ultimately eugenic idea frequently hides in plain sight like this. Sometimes evolutionary or genetic language and metaphors are used. Don't accept it. These folks may try to create this reality but that doesn't mean they'll succeed and it doesn't mean we need to surrender and let them succeed.

Life on earth writ large, the grand network of life, is a greater and more dynamic terraforming engine than any person could ever conceive. It has been operating ceaselessly for several billions of years. It has not yet terraformed the South Pole or the summit of Mount Everest. On what type of timeframe were you imagining that the shoebox of lichen you send to Mars was going to transform Frozen Airless Radioactive Desert Hell into a place where people could grow wheat?
