Wow, my legs are *destroyed*. Yesterday was my first long run of the season. Was expecting to do 5ish miles. Ended up doing seven miles over brutal technical single track.

That first mile was *no* joke!

Looking forward to a recovery hike later today.

Strava elevation map for yesterday's long run. The first mile was basically running up a steep wall littered with rocks, roots, and fallen leaves.

The app is my go-to. I absolutely love it. However, it uses its own file format. While it can export to various formats, I don't think there's a way to do that automatically.

So, I wrote a parser for it.

My goal is to use this as part of a workflow:
        1. Plug in iPhone to my Debian laptop
        2. Automatically mount the directory with the workouts
        3. Export the info into MD files with front matter which will then
        4. Be used to generate static pages and images with the info.

Sometimes, you just have to buy things on principle.

This is one of the more ridiculous records I’ve come across lately (pun intended), and I’m sure I’ll end up using it for fun samples in random music I’ll make for fun this year.

Definitely the first used record I’ve found that came with a cassette. That’s odd.
And BOTH are in excellent condition.

Who could forget such bangers as “Pelvic Pleasures” and “Kinky Chorus Kick And Flash”?

A peer-reviewed 2024 study in The Lancet Regional Health Americas found that out of 899 young and healthy Marines, a fourth of them went on to develop Long COVID after infection. Most of those people had mild symptoms in the up-front infection stage, and over a third of them hadn’t felt sick at all — one of the aspects I find most chilling about the virus.

A little story that isn't at all important, really.

So, when I was in my mid-20s, I picked up this pair of red leopard print pants. They were out of my comfort zone even then, very much look-at-me clothing, but I loved them. I didn't wear them often - what is the occasion exactly for red leopard print pants? - but they were one of the few pieces of clothing that I kept every time I cleaned out my closet that were too small for me.

I found them this summer while cleaning, and after running them through the laundry, I tried them on. They're snug, but wearable, so I hung them up, but I didn't really expect I'd ever wear them again. I'm almost 50 now.

I wore those damn pants on my date yesterday. And I still love them.

Check out my post on Rethinking “high HRV”

If you want to increase your HRV, start by forgetting about chasing a big number and focus instead on building a steady, low‑noise baseline.

                              – Many people want higher HRV because they think it proves elite athleticism, but research shows the link is loose and highly individual.

                              – What often separates “high HRV” athletes from everyone else is not talent, but predictable routines, disciplined recovery, and fewer wild swings in daily behavior.

Day 3 of my water fasting. I would have expected a loss of energy from lower glucose, but that hasn't happened yet. Exercise still seems to have a quick recovery. I'm sure I'll hit the wall in the following days. The goal is to maximize metabolic efficiency. I read that fasting changes the mitochondria, elongating them for efficiency. The goal is fasting until next Monday and see what it does for the blood tests, CBC/metabolic/lipids. My goal is to see how effectively young my body can perform. I'm in my late 50's and health care in this country is horrifically expensive and this is all about health and strength for decades ahead.

I had been looking at the Infinity Hoop because it's got ads all over social media, but it was going to cost me upwards of $100 to try it out because of my size.

Found a knockoff on Amazon for $15, so decided to give it a whirl.

As someone who used to be a fairly competent hula-hooper? This is way harder than it looks. Pretty sure I'm going to have to start with like, 5 minute intervals, but it's definitely going to be a workout.

                                      Predatory Data

Eugenics in Big Tech and Our Fight for an Independent Future
                                      https://bookshop.org/p/books/predatory-data-eugenics-in-big-tech-and-our-fight-for-an-independent-future-anita-say-chan/21312207

There's a nearly straight line from 20th century eugenics to 21st century big data and data science. Google, the bastion of big data, was founded by two Stanford graduate students; Stanford was founded by a eugenicist and instituted eugenics principles. Francis Galton--inventor of the regression analysis that forms the backbone of data science--was "hot or notting" London with a counter hidden in his pocket long before Harvard-age Zuckerberg recuperated the same with the favorite quantification technology of our day, computers.

"The measured life" is a eugenics concept. All these doohickeys that collect data with the promise of making your body a bit more "fit"? Eugenicist in origin. Eugenics is about "optimizing" the physical "fitness" of people. Apps that help you learn, make you more mentally "fit"? Also have origins in eugenics. Eugenics is also about "optimizing" the mental "fitness" of people. Hence the obsession with IQ.

This isn't to say you shouldn't take care of your body and mind in whichever ways you want. I do think it's important, though, to periodically reflect on, and ask yourself hard questions about, what's driving those efforts and what the goals really are. Part of understanding why eugenics thinking is resurging so hard and fast in the US is understanding its roots, where that type of thinking comes from. It's also important to reflect on where the apps and devices you use to achieve these goals come from. How many come directly or indirectly from Stanford, which was built by eugenicists to achieve eugenic goals, and its offshoots?

Trump and Musk are literally repeating themes from Francis Galton's eugenics out in the open now. They're confident they can get away with it without pushback because the ground was laid long ago. But eugenics didn't suddenly become bad again because coarse people started saying the quiet part out loud. It's always been bad thinking, bad science, and bad morality.
