Zeme is blogging about his retro game development journey on the Atari ST at the moment, and while I'm linking a specific entry you should read all of the entries.
Anyhow - this post specifically is about what I think is the coolest development that the demoscene ever invented on the lowly 1985-era Atari ST hardware: "Sync scrolling".
The ST computer was completely incapable of shifting the screen display horisontally, which made it horribly inefficient to make side scrolling games for. But us demo coders never stopped trying anyway - and the Swedish demo groups Omega and TCB independently at the same time found a hardware abusing trick to do it.
Zeme's writeup on the subject is really good - and yes - I'm mentioned multiple times since I've put together a library for others to make use of this trick in their productions.
I hate that I have to make this PSA. I'm posting it so other people in the demoscene are aware, and so other demoparty orgas can make informed safety decisions. please don't turn my replies into a cesspool, I don't have the energy for it.
felice is a creep and a transphobe. we banned him from NOVA for being persistently creepy to women. he was asked to leave people alone and he didn't. since then he's also been posting transphobic remarks on discord.
I've made it my mission to listen to all mod files (original 4 channel ones) in the mod archive, so I can create a curated playlist for a 24/7 amiga module web radio stream.
And boy, there's a lot of crap in there. I mean, this should not come as a surprise. I myself imagined myself being the next great demo scene musician as a teen, but I wasn't particularly talented in that regard so I am partly responsible for the crap.
But in between the mediocre attempts that litter the archive there's some real gems as well! And that's why I'm going through them all :)

Bit of a long shot, would anyone on here know how to get in touch with anyone from the Finnish demoscene group Future Crew, in particular Psi (Sami Tammilehto)? Are any on them on fedi? They must be in their 50's now.
I'd like to ask if he still has the Scream Tracker 3 source code, and if he would consider releasing it... It's such an important part of computing and music history. It deserves preservation.
If there was some kind of semi-organised UK hackers-on-a-train type meet up, how interested would you be? Further polls could occur...

@paulrickards @scruss I've seen this on the Apple II as well, ofc, but I can't find the code out there. I wanted to run it on my IIe.
But I can share a little fun I had with ChatGPT and its attempt to rewrite the thing for Applesoft BASIC. This is after several iterations.
I think it got tired of all that crap and said, "BORING - I want to code some demos instead!!!" Who knew GPT was a scene fan? lol

I'm thinking of putting together a little #demoscene get-together here in Orange County (California), maybe bi-monthly or something...
Anyone would be welcome and I'm especially interested in any #gamedev in the area interested in learning more and maybe participating in home-grown productions. Programmers, artists, musicians, etc...
DM me here if interested or hit me up on Matrix @didier:malenfant.net
🚀 Boosts appreciated.
