Brave is one of the browsers I use. I also still use Firefox (though I now find the Mozilla organization to be quite objectionable).

Und wenn ich das richtig weiß, kann man eine Gerätesync ohne Konto anlegen, im Gegensatz zu Firefox.
Außerdem habe ich meine RSS Feeds nach Nextcloud News umgezogen und das in der iPhone App Fiery Feeds gesynct. Wieder ein Account weniger.

Mullvad VPN's CEO has been caught supporting Sweden's far-right political party. In fact, the CEO is the party's largest individual financial donor.

I would suggest IVPN ( @ivpn ) as an alternative. iVPN stays out of politics, except when advocating for privacy and opposing surveillance.

That said...

When I previously pointed out that Proton VPN's CEO was a strong supporter of Donald Trump, or that Proton falls under U.S. jurisdiction, a group of people tried to perform mental gymnastics to defend Proton. They claimed that any alternative was no better or insisted that alternatives failed to meet whatever qualifying buzzwords they chose.

Today, I see those same types of people doing the same thing — defending Mullvad VPN while attempting to dismiss and degrade any suggested alternative.

The Fediverse has a group of politically right-leaning individuals who have learned not to express their support for fascism as directly, but instead to do so more passively in the hope of influencing others.

Standing up for companies led and owned by fascists while claiming "that's different" when comparing a company with the people leading it (Brave Browser, for example) is one way they encourage others to ignore what happens behind the scenes. Talking down alternatives that are not associated with fascism, or claiming they are no better for vague "reasons" (insert random excuse here), is another way these individuals encourage people to turn a blind eye.

No matter what alternative I or anyone else suggests, the important thing is that you choose one that does not support fascism. Don't turn a blind eye, and don't let someone else's mental gymnastics make you question whether you should switch providers.

Hate to say it but Kagi looks to me like it's going to full-on enshittify in a few years. Besides the fact that the Kagi people seem like libertarian techbros, this is a standard Silicon Valley startup. Their business model appears to be using your search queries to train their AI so they can sell it back to you (yes they take subscription fees but that's not where the "real" money and scale come from). From their own blog: https://blog.kagi.com/age-pagerank-over . Where they discuss "AI assistants" that you'll have to pay for? They're assuming a monopoly pricing model (so they assume they'll become a monopoly at some point), and the data for these assistants that they'll be selling back to us are coming from our own queries. You pay them to use their service for search, you "pay" them with data, and you pay again to use the AI assistants you helped train.

Check out the #kagi hashtag on Mastodon; you'll see a fair number of people saying things like the above and also:

Personally, I won't use that thing. My take: we really need to stop moving en masse from one company started by a kinda lousy group of people to the next and acting surprised each time the next one enshittifies. This pattern has unfolded enough times now that we should hold back awhile before committing to the next one. That's how I see it, anyway. If Kagi's still around in a few years and is great and they stop with their techbro stuff, I'll eat my words.
