I'm exploring #Kagi properties and really like the news page. From the About page:

I’m about a week into my switch from #DuckDuckGo to #Kagi. Like DDG, you can permanently exclude certain domains from your search results but the experience was vastly different.
For instance on DDG when I was shopping for a specific style of sweater and excluded Amazon and Pinterest from the results, the search feed gave me garbage that had nothing to do with my search string.
Conversely when I tried this with Kagi, it gave me results that excluded the sites I wanted and still pertained to the search string I provided.
Out of the gate, the differences really only start to become apparent when looking at specific topics. Searching for a popular movie on a streaming platform? The experience is essentially identical. Searching for an older movie though, I didn’t end up with bogus links to Netflix that didn’t lead to the actual movie.
The impression I get is that the quality of what I find will improve the more I customize what domains I permanently exclude as well as the more comfortable I become with certain search parameter shortcuts. I do seem to find what I’m looking for more quickly but I came in expecting this so it could also be confirmation bias at play.
We’ll see if it still feels like it’s faster for me after a few months of use but so far at least it seems to be saving me time which is nice.
@felimwhiteley I'm with you on not logging in to #Kagi. I noped right out at that point.
It's a shame, because I found the results impressive. I found exactly what I needed in at least one case. (I've only tried it a handful of times.)
Everyone's cheering users for rejecting AI search by switching to DuckDuckGo. Ask AI is right on the search bar on the homepage, the DDG app Has AI in its official name. There is a no-AI option--on a subdomain most may never find. They didn't reject AI. They rejected Google and no choice. That's a real and meaningful distinction — it's just not the one being celebrated.

## Search libraries
Most of you already know that the search engine we were used to has devolved into an LLM hallucinated AI slop nightmare
I silently switched to DuckDuckGo a few of years ago. There are others also one of them is Kagi search.
Instead of telling you how all my experiences are I will just leave the beautiful links so you can surf, check, and see if they suit you. Translation currency conversion and everything else that I used on Google, I can easily do on DuckDuckGo where I have the most experience.

@inthehands What's most disappointing here is the lack of seeing how this clashes with #Kagi 's supposed mission of "humanizing the web".
You can't do that while pretending ethics aren't part of it. Or by defending your business relationship with someone who denies basic human rights to some.
I think it'd be recoverable for Kagi if they end up revisiting the issue, but right now, I'm disappointed a.f.
Kagi started as an AI company that wanted to slurp up the internet to provide a question "answering" service not unlike what Google is proposing to replace web search with. Perhaps they've toned this rhetoric down a bit on their blog recently but there's no evidence I'm aware of that the business has changed mission. All of this is still available on Kagi's own blog---including the fact that they used to be kagi.ai---yet somehow it's controversial to point it out. If you're looking for a web search engine that isn't likely to turn into a slop extruder, Kagi is probably not going to be the one. Try @Mojeek@mastodon.social or Marginalia. This list might be helpful too.

Hate to say it but Kagi looks to me like it's going to full-on enshittify in a few years. Besides the fact that the Kagi people seem like libertarian techbros, this is a standard Silicon Valley startup. Their business model appears to be using your search queries to train their AI so they can sell it back to you (yes they take subscription fees but that's not where the "real" money and scale come from). From their own blog: https://blog.kagi.com/age-pagerank-over . Where they discuss "AI assistants" that you'll have to pay for? They're assuming a monopoly pricing model (so they assume they'll become a monopoly at some point), and the data for these assistants that they'll be selling back to us are coming from our own queries. You pay them to use their service for search, you "pay" them with data, and you pay again to use the AI assistants you helped train.

This pattern has unfolded enough times now that we should hold back awhile before committing to the next one. That's how I see it, anyway. If Kagi's still around in a few years and is great and they stop with their techbro stuff, I'll eat my words.
