Some people may find different things more or less objectionable.
Brave is one of the browsers I use. I also still use Firefox (though I now find the Mozilla organization to be quite objectionable).
I love how 95% of personal websites can still serve URLs first seen 30 years ago, but anything owned by a company bigger than "some guy in his basement" treats any URL older than 12 months as an unreadable runestone inscription, throws its hands in the air, and intones "404".

If Vivaldi had uBlock Origin I'd probably use it more.
I have to use a Chromium based browser to access some sites (business services web sites) and on those rare occasions I'm always impressed by how "snappy" Vivaldi is compared to Firefox and derivatives.
Vivaldi is a much more useful experience on iOS than the iOS lobotomized Firefox in the Apple app store.
Because of the lack of ublock and other extensions like cookie auto-delete and whatnot, I don't do much casual web browsing or researching things on my iOS phone - just the daily routine sites where I understand that there are no adverts - and only when I'm "out and about", never at home where I have access to 'better' browsing platforms. I got rid of my iPad for similar reasons.
I still use Waterfox on Android because I can run uBlock and other extensions.
Sure, Vivaldi is not totally open source but... I hate to say it... I'm starting to care less when it comes to the hellscape that the web has turned into.
I'll still use a gecko based browser for most things.

Kiedyś, kłopoty z blokowaniem reklam (ale nie tylko to) uśmierciły Internet Explorera.
Zastanawiam się, jaka będzie skala "odejść" od tej przeglądarki i na co osoby korzystające z Chrome ja zmienią. Dodam, że MS #Edge i #Opera deklarują podążanie za Google Chrome, więc w nich blokad reklam też nie będzie.

And here’s a real-world example of the lifecycle of an action performed on a local copy of the Gaza Verified web site¹ showing the event from the toggle button on the client being automatically mapped to the relevant event handler on the SignUpsSwitch Kitten component instance on the server and that handler setting a boolean on a JavaScript object in memory, which is automatically persisted to disk via Kitten’s default JSDB² database.
Note that Kitten is smart enough to automatically redact fields in the log output that look like they might be secrets.
All this is in the stateful-components-api-breaking-change branch³ at the moment and will be in the next release.

Very excited about the new stateful components model in Kitten¹ that I’m looking forward to releasing this week (finally) and the amount of visibility you can now get into the flow of your Kitten apps in the Kitten Interactive Shell (REPL)².
Since the new model is a breaking change (Kitten is prerelease) I’m in the middle of updating our own apps/sites and I still need to document everything. So it will take me a few days to do all that but then I’m very much looking forward to focussing on finishing up Catalyst and Yarn³ for launch this year.
It’s been a six year trek to reach what will essentially be the starting point of the Small Web :)

Over the weekend, I did some document creation with HTML and CSS. I wanted a simple two column layout and some textual styles: colors, size, all-caps text transform for section headings.
At first, I was looking for a template. While there are a lot of templates available, I really didn't like the designs I saw.
So just started with a blank text file, saved as .html, and got to work.
It didn't take too long and I had exactly what I was going for.
Used the browser's "Print to PDF" feature and got the document I wanted.
🌐 Many companies now block older browser versions from accessing their websites!
This follows many #browser makers ending updates 4 older operating systems, leaving legacy devices unable to use #web services without an #OS upgrade.
This kinda reminds me of the Java #website block by browsers a few years ago, just in reverse. (Revenge? ;)
Old #Android versions are also increasingly blocked from accessing the #Google #appstore.

As a low-vision user I already have to lean heavily on my short-term memory to successfully navigate the web. I also constantly use screen magnifiers.
When I select some text on a web page and hit "copy", then go to some other document and hit "paste", and what comes out is different from what I selected, my cognitive load suddenly spikes. The problem is compounded by the fact that I'm very likely zoomed so far into the desktop that I don't even see the text I thought I'd selected. Naturally I begin wondering whether I made a mistake, whether I selected more text than I intended, whether I didn't hit Ctrl-C enthusiastically enough for it to register, etc etc etc. What ought to be a simple and routine command turns into a mystery to solve. To me this feels like a hallmark of poor design.

Some browsers and extensions allow to remove tracking from links. So, you can remove it manually or use browser/extension that supports it.

So, with Google announcing "Search is going full-AI, we won't be sending traffic to the original sites any more", someone else pointed out that this eradication of the traditional search-engine compact - we let you crawl our sites to create your index, and you send visitors to our sites when relevant - means that we can, and should, block all of Google's crawlers now. If they're going to just take, take, take and give nothing back, why let them access your content at all?
But this is cute. Besides the fact that Google documents that some of their crawlers ignore robots.txt, there's this bit of fun. On this page (https://developers.google.com/crawling/docs/robots-txt/create-robots-txt), they link to "the Google list of user agents" (https://developers.google.com/crawling/docs/crawlers-fetchers/overview-google-crawlers).
However, that links to 3 separate pages of them, and *each of those pages explicitly states that is not comprehensive, but only the ones they commonly get questions about*. And of course, none of the "User-triggered fetchers" obey robots.txt, along with some others.
So Google isn't even reporting the full list of user-agents that can be used to stop their crawling.
That is some bullshit.

Kagi started as an AI company that wanted to slurp up the internet to provide a question "answering" service not unlike what Google is proposing to replace web search with. Perhaps they've toned this rhetoric down a bit on their blog recently but there's no evidence I'm aware of that the business has changed mission. All of this is still available on Kagi's own blog---including the fact that they used to be kagi.ai---yet somehow it's controversial to point it out. If you're looking for a web search engine that isn't likely to turn into a slop extruder, Kagi is probably not going to be the one. Try @Mojeek@mastodon.social or Marginalia. I just discovered subvert.fm - a community-owned alternative to Bandcamp. As an artist or label, you can sign up for free and become an "owner", meaning you can vote on the platform policies.

For anyone running Debian Testing (Forky) and using Waterfox, some video will not play due to Waterfox 6.6.12 not being compatible with ffmpeg v8. It is expecting v7 and I guess there are some videos where the video won't start due to switches, params, or whatever.
My use case was an old Youtube video that I snarfed many years ago and had on my Jellyfin server.

Waterfox (v6.6.12) won't play it but Librewolf (150.0.1-1) does. Both are installed from PPA, not flatpak.
New stuff plays fine so I hadn't noticed it since ~Wednesday when this box was re-imaged and moved into.
Apparently the Waterfox flatpak doesn't have this problem (probably has it's own ffmpeg v7 bundled inside or has a flatpak ffmpeg dependency).
I could get into the weeds further to confirm but Librewolf works for now. I'll wait for Waterfox to work through it. 🙂

One #accessibility issue I mention frequently is web designers, presumably for aesthetic reasons, making low-contrast colour choices. It also frequently goes along with selecting a #font so small that only people with excellent vision (and no #presbyopia) can read them, even if the #contrast were higher.
Here's an example. I'm not pointing out the software in question, even though you could identify it easily, because this isn't a dunk on that project, specifically.
This is the reference #documentation for an API, a small excerpt from the navigation links that run down a column on the left side of the page. The #text is darkish #grey on a lighter grey background. The contrast is terrible, particularly ignoring the highlighted entry because that's bolded as the current selection.
If you have #cataracts or any other #vision problem, you're going to have trouble with this. But it gets worse.
That text is 7 pixels high. On my monitors, it's 3 mm high. Ridiculous. Note that if you have fine motor-control problems or use alternative input devices, these are also extremely difficult to click on.
Here's the kicker: for this site, I have Firefox set to #scale the text up to 133%. That 7 pixels / 3 mm is *after* enlarging it.
#Web folks, please try to remember that not everyone is a twenty-something able-bodied person with zero accessibility issues.

Best Free and Open Source Software
One of the beautiful things about Sublime Merge¹ (and git/diffs) is that you can see exactly what has changed in complex expected values in tests to ensure that you’re updating the tests without overlooking regressions.
(This is from the Markdown page loader tests in Kitten², as I’m refactoring to implement the upcoming breaking change in the stateful components API³ as it affects the generated code for stateful layout components in Markdown pages.)

In what I’m telling myself is in no way feature creep, I just added experimental TypeScript support to Kitten in a dev branch.
I’m actually surprised how easy it was to do. Given I’m already using esbuild to create the Kitten bundle and already using a custom module loader, the change was basically making esbuild a dependency instead of a dev dependency, lazily transforming .ts files in the loader, and updating a few places in the code to ensure that you can use .ts as an extension in special Kitten extensions like .page.js, .post.js, etc. (so now you can have page.ts, post.ts, etc.)
Everything works the same way it does with TypeScript as it does with JavaScript – there’s no scaffolding or any additional workflow required.
For obvious reasons, I won’t be deploying this at end of day Friday but, hopefully, along with the major breaking change to the stateful component API, I plan to next week.

You absolutely can follow hashtags on this, however the user experience leaves a lot to be desired because the columns are small.
Turn on advanced web interface, click a hash tag, then 'pin' it. Here's where it gets sticky you have a lot of interests, so adding columns comes at a direct cost of how the ui feels and interacts especially if you are on a mobile device do not use advanced mode if you on a mobile device. You can add hash tags to those columns, along with ones you do not want. Pairs very nicely if you have some verbose filters as well. #mastodon #following

Is there a "trick" to getting Firefox/Waterfox/spin_of_choice to actually reload images from source when you press Shift-Reload / Shift-Ctrl-R ?
Sometimes it does it - most of the time it keeps reloading the same image from cache for a really long time regardless how many times you shift-reload. Closing the browser doesn't help most of the time.
What am I missing?

Key Findings
• #Webloc is a global #geolocation #surveillance system that monitors hundreds of millions of people based on data purchased from consumer apps and digital advertising. It was developed by Cobwebs Technologies and is now sold by its successor #Penlink.
• In collaboration with the European investigative #journalism platform #VSquare, we reveal that Hungarian domestic #intelligence has been using Webloc since at least 2022 and continues to use it as of today. Webloc customers also include the national police in El Salvador.
• U.S. customers include #ICE, the U.S. #military, #Texas Department of Public Safety, #DHS West #Virginia, #NYC district attorneys, and several #police departments in #LosAngeles, #Dallas, #Baltimore, #Tucson, #Durham and in smaller cities and counties like City of Elk Grove and Pinal County.
• Based on the responses to 96 #freedom of information requests we conclude that governments in #Europe and the U.K. are highly nontransparent about their potential use of ad-based surveillance.
• Cobwebs Technologies has links to the spyware vendor Quadream through Cobwebs Technologies founder Omri Timianker, who now oversees the international operations of Penlink.
• Webloc is sold as an add-on product to the social #media and #web intelligence #system Tangles. Based on technical #analysis and other sources we show that Tangles and other products developed by #Cobwebs Technologies are used in many countries across the globe.
• We briefly investigate another Cobwebs product named #Trapdoor that appears to help trick victims into revealing information. Our analysis leads us to believe that Trapdoor can help facilitate the #deployment of #malware on devices.

Bei Caschy ist die aktuelle Betriebssystem-Statistik erschienen und dass Linux eine Verbreitung von knapp über 3% in der Desktop-Nutzung besitzt. Die Server-Nutzung lassen wir hier aus der Diskussion mal raus.
Mal abgesehen davon, dass Webstatistiken von StatCounter so semi sind, beachtet ja kaum jemand, dass Linux-Nutzer oft deutlich mehr Wert auf Privatsphäre legen und daher eine überdurchschnittlich hohe Anzahl der User die Web-Trackings blockiert und somit nicht in die Statistik zählt.
Die Zahl der Blockierer ist auf anderen Betriebssystemen mangels Interesse und Möglichkeiten deutlich geringer und deshalb werden sie viel häufiger gezählt. Eine Messung mittels der User-Agents auf Abruf-Ebene wäre unter Umständen genauer, weil deutlich weniger Endnutzer ihre User-Agent-Kennung ändern.

At least in the way I use computers as a low vision person, pop-ups are extraordinarily anti-accessibility. Yes, even tooltips and alt-hovertext, depending on how they're done. Some websites are close to unusable because of these things.

I've now had at least four people, two of whom self-identified as Mozilla employees, claim that the above list of AI features--which were suddenly and rapidly added over the last few releases of Firefox, and were "on" (true) by default--could easily be turned off by flipping one master kill switch. This is not true, but folks keep claiming it or suggesting it anyway.Here's a post from an official Firefox Mastodon account suggesting such a master kill switch does not exist yet, but will be added in a future release:

That's not as bad as it could be. It's bad they're stuffing AI into a perfectly good web browser for no apparent reason other than vibes or desperation. It's very bad if it's on by default; their dissembling post about it aside, opt-in has a reasonably clear meaning here: if there's a kill switch, then that kill switch should be off by default. But at least there will be a kill switch.
In any case, please stop responding to my post saying there's a master kill switch for Firefox's AI slop features. From the horse's mouth, and from user experience, there is not yet.
Furthermore, when there is a master kill switch, we don't know whether flipping it will maintain previous state of all the features it controls. In other words it's possible they'll have the master kill switch turn on all AI features when the switch is flipped to "on" or "true", rather than leaving them in whatever state you'd set them to previously. Perhaps you decide to turn the kill switch on because there are a handful of features you're comfortable with and you want to try them; will doing so mean that now all the AI features are on? We won't know till it's released and people try this. So, in the meantime, it's still good practice to keep an eye on all these configuration options if you want the AI off.

Security theater. In fact I think "security" is really about control, and nowadays when I encounter a security challenge I think of it in terms of who is trying to control my behavior and to what ends. I think it's clear by now that many internet "security" controls, at least those deployed by large tech companies, are not good faith efforts to protect users; that's a secondary concern.

Somehow bot-detecting algorithms have been degrading over time.
This is a troubling trend because people who aren't using the anointed access points of the internet struggle more and more to connect and interact. Large entities like CloudFlare choke off more and more avenues of access in the name of "security", enforcing digital checkpoints without any accountability to anyone.
