"Angry protesters on Wednesday shooed Gov. Janet Mills from a memorial for #JohanSebastiánDuránGuerrero at the intersection where he was killed this week by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.
Video posted by the Boston Globe showed a crowd yelling at Mills, who was in Biddeford to meet with local leaders and pay respects to Guerrero. Mills had called for ICE to take certain measures or be abolished at a press conference earlier in the day.
" 'Do something!” one person shouted.'
" 'You had never cared about us!'
" 'That’s another dead body!' yelled another. 'Don’t come back up here unless you got results!' "

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — "A group of about 200 local activists, elected officials, community organizations and faith leaders are holding an 'emergency protest' outside the Scarborough ICE facility a day after the shooting death of a Colombian man in #BiddefordME.
"On Monday, 26-year-old #JoanSebastianGuerrero was shot and killed by ICE, leaving behind a wife, 3-year-old child, and sister.
"The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says an ICE officer 'fearing for public safety' [BULLSHIT!] shot and killed the driver. It happened as agents were watching a home of someone they believed was in the country illegally and has a final order of removal from the country.
"Protestors called for the removal of all ICE agents in Maine and the release of all people detained by federal agents.
" 'The governor has to issue a proclamation, saying that ICE is not allowed in our state, and the Attorney General should direct the State Troopers to be filing criminal charges against the murderers in our community,' said @Todd , one of the organizers of the protest.
"Representatives from more than 20 organizations attended the protest including: #MaineYouthPower, Maine Small Businesses Association, Maine #DemocraticSocialists of America, the Maine #WomensLobby, #MaineCoalitionForPalestine, the #MaineGreenParty, #MainePRIDE, #MaineTransnet and the Maine #AFLCIO."

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were involved in a fatal shooting in Biddeford.
"That’s according to Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, a Biddeford Democrat, who released a short statement about Monday morning’s shooting near Pool Street.
"Beyond that, Fecteau had few other details to make public, saying that the Maine State Police are at the scene gathering details. He expects the FBI to take over the investigation.
" 'These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me,' Fecteau said.
"Monday morning’s shooting is at least the 11th fatal shooting involving ICE or U.S. #BorderPatrol agents since the beginning of the second #Trump administration. That includes this month’s fatal shooting of 52-year-old #LorenzoAraujo, a construction worker, in Houston, according to the Guardian.
"Earlier this year, #Maine became the latest state to see a surge in ICE agents as part of the Trump administration’s #OperationCatchOfTheDay. That surge was cut short amid a nationwide pushback against the agency’s tactics following the fatal shootings of two protesters in #Minneapolis.
"Of the nearly 200 detained in Maine during the January ICE surge, only 11 had criminal convictions, undercutting the Trump administration’s claim that it was targeting the 'worst of the worst.' "

PORTLAND, Maine — An extreme #HeatWatch is in effect this week for much of the state ahead of the Fourth of July.
"Need to get out of the heat? There are multiple community cooling centers in Maine that help provide temporary relief from the high temperatures.
"According to the Maine Emergency Management Agency, a cooling center is a facility that has been opened for short-term operations due to a specific emergency or event. They are normally opened when hot temperatures may become dangerous.
"City of #PortlandME officials said the public library on Congress Street will be open as a cooling center on Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Meanwhile, Troubh Ice Arena will be open as a cooling center on Friday because the library will be closed in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. Portland officials also said there will be splash pads at several city parks and reminded people they can also cool off at the Deering Oaks Ravine.
"The city of #AugustaME also announced that it will offer a daytime cooling center at the Augusta Civic Center on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. People are being asked to enter the Civic Center through the South Entrance and follow the signs to the Cumberland Room. Pets are welcome, provided they always remain in a secure crate or carrier, which will not be available on-site. People with questions about the cooling center or transportation needs can call the Augusta Police Department's non-emergency line at 207-626-2370 ext. 0.

Janet Mills vetoed a bill that would have put a temporary moratorium on data centers in Maine, a moratorium that would have been the first of its kind in the United States. The Maine Legislature passed the bill, #LD307, which would have required the state's Department of Energy Resources to create the Maine Data Center Coordination Council to ensure Maine is ready for data centers.
"State Rep. Melanie Sachs, the bill's sponsor, said the legislation was an attempt to make sure Maine is ready for data centers and focused on the infrastructure needed for these types of facilities. When the bill was passed, a spokesperson for Mills said the governor agreed with lawmakers that the rapid growth of large-scale AI data centers warrants careful evaluation of impacts on public resources, the environment and Maine ratepayers. But Mills also supported an exemption to the law for the proposed data center at the former Jay paper mill, which was not included in the bill passed by the Legislature."

The event was hosted by Penobscot Nation members and offered a chance to discuss non-partisan policy affecting #WabanakiNations and candidates’ plans to support those communities.
"Located less than 15 minutes from the #UniversityOfMaine, #IndianIsland sits along the #PenobscotRiver. This reservation serves as a cultural and historical center for the Penobscot people. Within the community there are buildings and museums that reflect ongoing preservation efforts of Wabanaki culture. According to the Wabanaki Alliance, the Penobscot Nation is one of the oldest continuous governments in the world and remains committed to protecting territories, culture and language as a federally recognized #SovereignNation.

Personal aside about the King family...
So, former Governor #AngusKing was also a so-called "clean energy executive" who liked to dance around the issues. I dealt with him in person a number of times and found him as skittery as a crab walking, and my nickname for him was the "Anus King". "Hosted by the #MikmaqNation, one of Maine’s four #WabanakiNations, the event lasted two hours and covered a broad range of topics, from #WaterRights to gaming legislation to the teaching of #NativeHistory in Maine’s schools.
The candidates — State Auditor #MattDunlap, state Sen. #JoeBaldacci, former political operative #JordanWood and social worker Paige Loud — agreed on nearly everything, chiefly in their wholehearted support of #TribalSovereignty.
"#Sovereignty has dominated the political conversation around Maine’s tribes for years, with majority support for its expansion in the state legislature countered by opposition from the state’s executive leaders, including LePage and then Gov. #JanetMills.

If elected, all four said they would reintroduce a 2022 bill put forth by U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, to amend the #MaineIndianClaimsSettlementAct of 1980 and give the Wabanaki the same rights under federal law as the 570 #FederallyRecognizedTribes.

#Maine - Democratic Governor Candidates Break with Mills on Data Centers
Four out of five candidates running to replace #JanetMills said she was wrong to veto a temporary moratorium.

"Four of the five Democrats running to replace Gov. Janet Mills said she was wrong to veto a first-in-the-nation moratorium on large data center construction at candidate forum moderated by the #MidcoastVillager Saturday.
All but one candidate on the June 9 primary ballot — clean energy executive #AngusKingIII — said they support the temporary moratorium, citing data centers' potential impacts on electricity rates, water usage and limited job creation, among other concerns.
"Mills, locked in a Democratic U.S. Senate primary against oyster farmer Graham Platner, said she largely supports the goals of #LD307. But in her veto message, she said felt compelled to nix the ban because it could have killed a proposed $550 million data center to a former mill complex in #JayME. [Mills has since dropped out of the race]
"At the forum, sponsored by the Knox and Lincoln County Democratic Parties at Watts Hall, the Democrats looking to replace Mills said the Jay project was not worth the sacrifice of the entire moratorium.
" 'I think the governor’s veto on Friday was unfortunate,' said former Maine House Speaker #HannahPingree, who left a top role in Mills administration ahead of her run for governor. 'We have seen in Virginia and in Texas, the kind of significant damage that these centers have been doing. And I think it's incredibly urgent that Maines passes the moratorium and then we put the kind of guardrail in place that will protect Maine people, protect our environment, but especially protect rate payers.'
"Dr. #NiravShah, the former head of the Maine Centers for Disease Control who is seen as frontrunner in the primary, said data centers do not create enough jobs to outweigh their potential negative impacts.
" 'I think Governor Mills's veto was in error, and I would have signed the legislation had I been governor,' Shah said. 'If we are going to have data centers in Maine — and that’s a big if, I want to be clear — then my general approach is let's do it, right, not do it fast. If we are going to do it. And right now, there are just too many unanswered questions about the impact of data centers on rural electricity rates, which are already high enough. On our water use, which is a precious resource. And on our health.'
"Secretary of State #ShennaBellows was more blunt, calling data centers 'a #boondoggle perpetrated by #CryptoBillionaires who are gobbling up everything in sight.' She said the moratorium is 'prudent' and that the legislature had constructed it thoughtfully.
"Former Maine Senate President #TroyJackson, who is closely aligned with labor unions, said he supports development that creates good-paying jobs — but does not see data centers as delivering on that promise.
" 'It's a false narrative what she’s telling us about jobs,' Jackson said of Mills' justification for the veto.
"Pointing to a pin on his lapel for a local electrician union, Jackson said: 'There's a lot of #UnionWorkers that are electricians in the state that do want jobs, but not really those jobs.'
"And Jackson, who clashed with Mills at times when he led the upper chamber of the Legislature, said Mills should have found another way to protect the Jay project. 'I would have signed that bill and I think the governor should have gotten involved way, way before to try to make her points known or at least come up with a compromise,' Jackson said.
"King, the son of independent U.S. Sen. Angus King and the only candidate not to back the moratorium outright, declined to say whether he would have signed the bill. When pressed, he called the question a 'hypothetical' and argued the measure would not have passed as written if he were governor."

"A Texas company is exploring the feasibility of developing a massive data center in south Sanford.
New England Energy owns 1,060 acres of woods and has been quietly inquiring about the suitability of the site for a 100 to 300 megawatt capacity data center. Existence of the potential project burst into the open during a Maine legislative committee last week, and more details are surfacing."

"This experimental forest, which is used by the U.S. Forest Service for forest ecology and management research, is better organized for walking than its northern partner, the Massabesic Experimental Forest in Lyman.
"Here there are a few well-blazed, easy-to-follow footpaths, as well as a 1-mile old forest road cutting through the land that is flat and easy. Additionally, there are several twisty trails that aren’t blazed but seem as if they would appeal to mountain bikers. These unmarked tracks are often identifiable by small boulders parked at their entrance where they split from the old forest road. I’ve marked the blazed and un-blazed trails with different colors in my map.
"An interesting spot in this area is the largest #AtlanticWhiteCedar #wetlands in #NewEngland, which you can visit by hiking the 1-mile #ClaytonCarlTrail to the #AtlanticWhiteCedarTrail. These paths are accessed from the main track, on the west side of the forest.
"Additionally, there is a very pretty short trail on the other side of #WhichersMillRoad. The easy and wide 0.5-mile #CharlesESwettTrail takes you to the shores of #EstesLake. The rocks here look like they would make good swimming perches."

"The proposal would create a 180-day moratorium on new data center projects in Westbrook. City leaders said the pause would give officials time to update ordinances and better understand how large-scale facilities could impact the city’s electric grid, water supply, and taxpayers.
"The discussion comes as Maine communities increasingly debate the future of AI-related infrastructure. Last month, Gov. #JanetMills vetoed a bill that would have imposed a statewide moratorium on data centers.
" 'This is a subject that has the potential to destroy our community,' Westbrook resident Marnie Ward said ahead of the meeting.
"Ward said she has followed reports of data center development in other parts of the country and worries promises made by developers may not always be fulfilled.

"Weeks after Gov. Janet Mills vetoed a bill to temporarily restrict permitting for new data centers of 20 megawatts or more, at least four towns and cities are considering enacting their own moratoriums. The local pauses are designed to give officials time to review their zoning rules and develop new regulations for large data centers — should they ever come to town.
"Some, like those in Sanford and Scarborough, come as developers have already proposed building data centers in town. Others, like in Brunswick and Westbrook, are designed to get ahead of potential data center construction. All four communities plan to discuss their proposals at meetings this week.
"Though these local proposals have taken on new urgency in a lieu of a broader moratorium, they are not the first of their kind. The Bangor City Council unanimously passed a city-wide pause in April, days before Mills shot down the statewide effort. Anne Krieg, the town’s director of development, said they 'didn’t want to wait for the state,' as development pressure mounted."

"A state elections official is recommending that a referendum on transgender athletes be kept off the November ballot after identifying problems with thousands of petition signatures.
"The proposed ballot initiative would only allow athletes to compete on teams that match their birth sex unless a school offers a co-ed team. If enacted, it would also require schools to maintain separate locker rooms, restrooms and showers for male and female students.
"But opponents challenged the validity of thousands of petition signatures filed by the #ProtectGirlsSports in Maine campaign. And after reviewing the petition sheets, Chief Deputy Secretary of State Katherine McBrien recommended that more 12,500 of the nearly 80,000 signatures be invalidated because of multiple issues. Those included petition circulators failing to file valid affidavits with the secretary of state's office, duplicate signatures, someone else signing a petition sheet rather than the supposed voter, and signatories not matching any registered voters in their town's voting rolls.
"If Secretary of State #ShennaBellows agrees with McBrien's recommendation, the Protect Girls Sports campaign would fall just 532 signatures below the 67,682 that are currently needed to place an issue on the statewide ballot."

Instead of a light rail system or rapid bus transit on the existing roads (and / or safer bike lanes. "Reiner, who has lived near three of the sites for years, was diagnosed with bladder cancer last Thanksgiving. He underwent surgery in December and is now receiving treatment.
" 'The big question is, was it this exposure? You can’t say. But this exposure may have contributed,' he said. 'The more toxins and environmental hazards you encounter in your life, it all adds up. It’s the cumulative effect.'
"Concerns about emissions have persisted for years. Previously, oil companies were allowed to self-monitor their emissions and were subject to stricter regulations only if they reported elevated toxin levels.
"In 2019, #GlobalCompanies LLC entered into a legal settlement that required the installation of new technology to reduce emissions. The company’s benzene levels are now well below state thresholds.
" 'They don’t want to be forced to do something that would be the right thing for everybody,' Reiner said. 'Everybody in America could benefit if oil companies started cleaning their emissions before they leave the tank farms and facilities.' "

So, I happened to tune into a local commercial radio station to hear the weather report, and there was an ad by some group talking about how #Maine Governor #JanetMills was taking away everyone's morning coffee! Of course, that was republican scaremongering, since the ban is on #CoffeeMakers that have #PFAS and other #Foreverchemicals as part of their parts and/or seals. Simple solution to that. BUY A STOVETOP COFFEE POT! That's what I grew up drinking, and that's what I use now. I wouldn't use an aluminum one, but the stainless steel ones aren't expensive, and if cleaned properly, produce great tasting coffee for YEARS!
