French first lady Brigitte Macron and other spouses of world leaders. "It will be formed in the shape of humans. Very soon, artificial intelligence will move from our mobile phones to humanoids that deliver utility. Since our environment is designed for people, humanoid systems are uniquely suited to navigate and operate within our world. They fit well."

"Imagine a humanoid educator named Plato," she continued. "Access to the classical studies is now instantaneous. Literature, science, art, philosophy, mathematics and history. Humanity's entire corpus of information is available in the comfort of your home. Plato will provide a personalized experience, adaptive to the needs of each student. Plato is always patient, and always available. Predictably, our children will develop deep critical thinking and independent reasoning abilities. The AI-powered Plato will boost analytic skills and problem solving and adopt in real time to a student's pace, prior knowledge and even emotional state. The byproduct — a more well-rounded lifestyle for our children, freeing up time for being with friends, playing sports and developing interests beyond school. A more complete person."

Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing predicts humanoid robots will surpass human speed limits by mid-year, potentially running 100 meters in under 10 seconds, beating Usain Bolt's 9.58-second world record. He says declining component costs and rapid algorithm iteration will drive robots from labs into real-world applications like logistics and industrial inspection. technode.com/2026/03/18/unitre

"Caitlin Kalinowski, who had been leading hardware and robotic engineering teams at OpenAI since November 2024, announced she has left the company.

“I resigned from OpenAI,” she posted on X and LinkedIn. “I care deeply about the Robotics team and the work we built together. This wasn’t an easy call. AI has an important role in national security. But surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got. This was about principle, not people. I have deep respect for Sam and the team, and I’m proud of what we built together.”

Her departure comes amid an escalating dispute over how far AI companies should go in supporting U.S. military uses of the technology. In recent days, negotiations between the Pentagon and Anthropic collapsed after the company pushed for strict limits on domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. Soon after, OpenAI reached its own agreement with the Defense Department to deploy its models on a classified government network."

Yesterday, I volunteered as a judge in a youth robotics competition! It was a lot of fun, but left me pensive.

Most of the kids have a blast doing this. They're learning useful technical, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, mostly from first-hand experience and from each other, which is awesome!

There is a big downside, though: robotics is a resource game. Teams who have money, gear, a workshop, mentors, etc. do better, and many schools just don't have that stuff. It makes some kids self-conscious. They see they can't compete, get disheartened, and feel inadequate.

Luckily, the contest is designed to mitigate this. The few elite teams win, of course, but awards are spread broadly. Also, the incentives change when you're jockeying for first place. The critical points come from mentoring and supporting other teams, as well as fundraising and recruitment.

I don't like turning kids into little marketers for the competition, but I have to admit it's a clever solution to a vicious problem.

**Humans vs Robots? China Begs to Disagree**

The 2026 Spring Festival Gala, one of the world's most-watched television events, featured humanoid robots performing martial arts, intricate sword dances and comedy skits alongside human celebrities.

While parts of the world view humanoid robots with fear and suspicion, China is increasingly embracing them as partners in work, entertainment and daily life.

China accounted for 90% of the roughly 13,000 humanoid robots shipped globally last year, and represented over half of the humanoid robot exhibitors at CES 2026.

The audience reacts with confusion and mixed emotions, with some reporters holding microphones and question marks above their heads, while others celebrate with foam hands marked with dollar signs. A chart in the background humorously shows a large yellow circle labeled Ads dominating a small section labeled Ethics, highlighting the satirical focus on profit over principles.

"Dwarkesh Patel: You would think that to emulate the trillions of tokens in the corpus of Internet text, you would have to build a world model. In fact, these models do seem to have very robust world models. They’re the best world models we’ve made to date in AI, right? What do you think is missing?

Richard Sutton [Here is my favorite part, - B.R.]: I would disagree with most of the things you just said. To mimic what people say is not really to build a model of the world at all. You’re mimicking things that have a model of the world: people. I don’t want to approach the question in an adversarial way, but I would question the idea that they have a world model. A world model would enable you to predict what would happen. They have the ability to predict what a person would say. They don’t have the ability to predict what will happen.

What we want, to quote Alan Turing, is a machine that can learn from experience, where experience is the things that actually happen in your life. You do things, you see what happens, and that’s what you learn from. The large language models learn from something else. They learn from “here’s a situation, and here’s what a person did”. Implicitly, the suggestion is you should do what the person did."

                                                              1. Design (the technology)

                                                              4. Social factors

Notice I did not mention science — that is because there are no theoretical questions in , , systems, etc. that remain to be solved before vehicles are possible. What remain are engineering and social factors.
