O Blue começou em 1973 com Hugh Nicholson, que já havia tocado com as bandas The Scots of St James, The Poets e Marmalade; Ian MacMillan, ex-integrante das bandas The Boots, The Sabres, White Trash e Cody; Timi Donald, ex-baterista dos grupos The Pathfinders, Quiver e White Trash. Eles assinaram um contrato de gravação com o selo RSO, de Robert Stigwood e seu álbum de estréia Blue recebeu aclamação da crítica mundial, tal como das revistas Rolling Stone, Melody Maker, Billboard e outras.
