Domestika Deceptive Bait & Switch

The quality of the course is decent. However...

I did not sign up for Domestika Plus, it was upgraded for me without my request. As I get dozens of emails a day I tend to skim emails to save time. I thought it was fine to receive the month free that I did not ask for and assumed, wrongly, that once the month ended my Domestika Plus would be over. I did not manage to take advantage of any courses during that month due to lack of time. This is a classic deceptive bait and switch business practice. It is a dirty and unethical money grab from your customers.

As read online; Domestika faces widespread accusations of deceptive "bait and switch" and dark pattern tactics regarding its Domestika Plus subscription. Users frequently report buying a low-cost, individual course (such as a $0.99 or discounted promotional class) only to be unknowingly or automatically opted into an expensive annual Plus subscription costing over $300. Low-Contrast Notifications: Renewal warning emails are criticized for using misleading hierarchies, placing cancellation details or upcoming charge amounts in tiny, low-contrast grey text at the very bottom resembling a basic footer. I tried requesting a full refund of my Domestika Plus charge due to the aforementioned deceptive practices. Your customer service does not respond to issues and there is no alternative to an AI Assistant when contacting you.

Terribly poor customer service and I will not recommend to friends.

Unexpected Domestika Plus charge – still waiting for a human response

I purchased a course on Domestika and, as part of the purchase, a one-month free trial of Domestika Plus was activated. I understood that I would receive a reminder before the paid subscription started, but unfortunately I never received one.

The annual subscription was then charged automatically. As soon as I noticed the payment, I cancelled the subscription immediately, did not use any of the Plus benefits after the charge, and contacted Domestika straight away to request a refund.

So far, however, I have only received automated responses. I am still waiting for a human reply or a proper statement regarding my specific case.

I understand how subscriptions and automatic renewals work, but I also believe there should be room for common sense and fair customer service in a situation where someone notices the charge immediately, cancels straight away and has not used the service.

After searching online, I was surprised to find that many other customers describe very similar experiences. I wish I had checked this before purchasing.

I am still hoping Domestika will look at my case individually and show that they are willing to treat genuine mistakes fairly. I would be very happy to update this review if the issue is resolved appropriately.

Domestika subscription issues.

I had an annual subscription for 2 years. Due to the increase in fees I decided to cancel at then end of the second year. I received an email on the last day that my subscription is valid till midnight today. I spent a huge chunk of my day selecting 3 courses to spend my last 3 credits on. When I added the 3 courses to my basket, to use my three remaining credits, I was notified that I will be charged for the credits. I am not impressed. I wrote an email with screen shots, and finally got a response. Obviously from AI, explaining the benefits of PLUS to me. It is clear that my email and attachment was another waste of time, added to the waste of selecting 3 courses to use my last credits. Most of my day wasted. I am not impressed. I have seen so many negative reviews, including about the translation errors, it is actually a joke how bad the AI is.

In response to their reply: thanks for confirming that you decided to end it a few hours early as you thought I had enough time to use my credits, and you can cancel early. No explanation, no apology that your system was not set up; just a 'you had enough time." Very interesting customer service.

Hi,

At Domestika, credits are valid for 12 months from the date they are granted or until you cease to be a Plus member (whichever comes first) and automatically expire according to UTC time, as indicated in our Terms of Use (https://domestika.co/TermsConditions).

You always had access to the expiration date of each credit in your Domestika Plus > Your Plus credits panel, so you could manage them at any time during their validity period.

Please note that you can find more information in our Help Center: https://domestika.co/CS-AllAboutCredits

Hi! Our goal is to make every step of the Domestika Plus free-trial clear and easy to manage.

How the purchase works:
- You can choose between the reduced price or the regular price. With the reduced price, the banner itself explains that a 30-day free trial will start, showing the exact price that will be charged if the trial isn’t cancelled.

- Once you move to the checkout page, the subscription details appear again, clearly visible above the course being purchased, to ensure transparency. If you choose not to have the subscription, which is possible at that moment, you can remove it, and the course price will be updated to the regular rate.

- Notifications are sent to the email associated with your Domestika account during your trial period and you can cancel before the trial period ends from Profile › Subscriptions.

About the charge you received, it seems like the trial wasn’t cancelled before the estimated period, so the annual membership was billed automatically.

Please note that you can find more information in our Help Center: https://domestika.co/CS-PlusRefund

Regards,
Domestika Team.

Never use it

They claim everywhere that you can cancel your subscription at any time, but that is simply not true. They mislead customers and, in my opinion, violate European consumer protection rules.

Getting a refund seems impossible, and there is practically no customer support at all.

Most importantly, the quality of the product is terrible. The automatic English translation is extremely poor.

I would not recommend this service to anyone.

Hi! We’re sorry to hear that your experience with Domestika has left you disappointed.

We’d like to clarify that Domestika Plus can be canceled at any time before the next recurring purchase is generated. The cancellation can be completed directly from the Subscriptions (https://domestika.co/CS-PlusAccount) section of the account, and the subscription remains active until the end of the period already paid for. Once a renewal has already been processed, however, it cannot be canceled retroactively, and Plus purchases are non-refundable under our Terms of Use (https://domestika.co/TermsConditions).

Regarding the course translations, we understand that the quality of automatic translations can affect the learning experience. Domestika offers courses in different languages, and the available subtitle and dubbing languages are displayed on each course page before purchase. We’re continually working to improve the experience and appreciate you sharing this feedback.

If you’re experiencing a specific issue with your subscription or account, our Support team is available through our Contact Us form: https://domestika.co/CS-ContactUs

We hope this helps clarify how the subscription and cancellation process works.
