Kill Team - Heretic Astartes - Half-Dozen Second Cousins of Chaos

I've played a few games of the new Warhammer 40K Kill Team game of late, enough to convince me that it's worth me painting up a team or three.

My mate Pete kindly gave me a bunch of old plastic Chaos Marines he had scored off fleaBay a while back. They were in a pretty poor state paint-wise and a couple needed some repair and re-positioning of arms and weapons but they were certainly serviceable and most welcome. Last night and on and off today I have been speed painting five of them as Slaanesh to form the core of my team, somewhat tongue-in-cheek named the Half-Dozen Second Cousins of Chaos.

These guys were once members of other chapters but their particular perversions were simply to out there for them to be tolerated by proper wrong-thinking Slaaneshi so they were exiled, left to drift through space and time until they found each other.

From left to right we have Brother Click Bait, Brother Big Brother, Brother Dutch Oven, Brother Crocs (hence the horrid green feet) and Brother Coldplay.

I have a bunch of plastic Cultists assembled and ready for painting too. Those should go under the brush starting tomorrow night and will likely be finished next weekend. Suggestions for names are most welcome, and that means YOU Evan :-)

AHPC VIII - Ev's Challenge, Day 57

Greetings friends and followers!

It's been a while since I've delivered a progress report on what has been a moderately productive Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge (at least by my admittedly leisurely standards), so here goes.

I had a bit of a rest following the Flight Theme Round, but resolved to get back into the game while on holidays from work.

First off the table was my entry in the Theme Round, 'BFG', 'Shooting the Messenger', an insight into how Ogres handle battlefield parleys.

A concerted push to get some more terrain into the mix saw the long-neglected contents of my garage get turned over in quest of something suitable, and I lighted on an old kit from GW, 'Dreadstone Blight', a ruined wizard's tower.

I'm very pleased with how it turned out, though the designers do love them some skullz...

I was also able to return to a previous subject, Chaos Dwarf Admiral Thadrak Krakenbane, seen here at the height of his powers. This Scibor sculpt was a delight to paint.

A Reaper Bones Ettin rounded out Day 41's entries. I decided to go with a yellowy skin tone, and the large expanses of flesh on the beastie rewarded the extra effort.

The 'Music' Theme Round was upon me shortly afterwards, and I was pleased to be able to submit some old skool minis in the form of these Goff Rockerz, an Ork rock band from the early WH40K universe. Extra bright goblin green skin and gaudy costumes, and the tribute to the days of Rogue Trader was complete!

Finally, I finished some more Scibor Dwarves, the Salvage Crew. The colour scheme is meant to recall blue denim overalls and convey a sense of no-nonsense workers and craftsmen.

A wealth of detail on these sculpts, especially given their small size, but they really repay the extra effort.

Another bonus theme awaits, 'Childhood', so I'd better get cracking.

Two more major projects completed!

I'm a man possessed! Exactly what I'm possessed or and/or by is debatable, however the consequences are undeniable. Today I've completed another TWO major long term projects.

First up is my 8,000 point Epic 40K Squat army. These wee 6mm scale "space dwarfs" have been a labour or love (and not inconsiderable expense) and now they are DONE. Well, there's still a bit of basing to do but that's on hold until I can order a metric tonne of tufts. Here they are in all their red and white glory...

Secondly, with the completion of these three Space Marine Landspeeders I've also wrapped up another of my long running 40K projects...

All up this army tops out at something like 4,300 points using 5th edition (which we refuse to give up!). The purists will note that the weapon load-outs for the speeders are non-standard. That's simply because I had a missile launcher and a pair of autocannons leftover from my Catachan Sentinels and wasn't willing to shell out a lot of shekels for extra bits when these look the business anyway.

So, now I need to decide which of my major projects to clobber next. But first, a nap and the Sunday arvo pie/footy combo. Bliss!

Space Marine Landraider Repairs & Repaint Complete

This little number has been a long time in the works and thankfully is now complete. It's a Landraider Crusader for my DIY Space Marine chapter, the "Angelicus Mechanicus".

I picked it up cheap at CANCON in January and have been working on it on and off ever since. As 2016 is officially the Year of Finishing Shit Projects at Chez Millsy I ploughed on with it and can now cross it off my to do list. [insert Woot! here]

Overall given there was a reasonable amount of repair work to do I'm pretty happy with the outcome. At various stages in it's life prior to arriving in my tender clutches it has been painted blue (presumably Ultramarines), red (presumably Blood Angels) and finally green (presumably Dark Angels). Quite a life and testament to the rigorous engineering principles of the Imperium's workshops...

I'm pretty close to "finishing" this project now too. I've got three Landspeeders on the desk at the moment in various stages of construction which will complete all the vehicles I want. There's a few odd figs to do as well but they're "just because I can" type of things so will likely get put away for a while at least.

Sandbags and workbenches

It's raining, it's pouring. Quite literally pouring. As I type this at 5:17pm we're just shy of 4" of rain since midnight. Yesterday was just as wet. What does this mean? Lot's of painting and overexposed photography, that's what!

Since Saturday morning I've knocked off another four Oldhammer Chaos Warriors...

I've also been working away on a second-hand 40K Landraider I picked up at CANCON. Some time ago it looked like this...

Admittedly it looks like I've turned it 180 and painted a couple of bits black. You'll just have to take my word for it that a LOT more has been done.

Finishing Off the Catachans - Ogryn Bonehead and Sentinels

I'm so close to finishing my 2,500 point Warhammer 40K Catachans army I can almost smell the final coat of varnish!  The models below leave me with just two Imperial Sentry Guns plus crew and I'm done. Given I started painting the army almost exactly a year ago that's pretty pleasing all round.
2 x tracked AFVs, 3 x walker AFVs and 114 infantry models. Not bad for a large 12 month project in amongst all the others.

First up in this batch is an Ogryn Bonehead - theoretically the smartest and most likely to make corporal. It's not much of an achievement to be honest but in abhuman terms he's Mensa material.

The other half of this batch is a squadron of Catachan Sentinels. The OIC is a true Catachan pattern with Heavy Flamer and the other two are armed with Lascannons for some extra punch. Nice kits and quite fun to paint. The only real sticking point is the old style Catachan upgrade kits don't fit the new style cockpits so I was forced to improvise the vegetation on the roll cages on two of the three.

As of now til the 20th I'll mostly be prepping for this year's 6th Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge so don't expect to see much from me for the next week or so...

No, no, no! You're doing it all wrong!!!

As the 6th Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge approaches a smarter man than me would be prepping miniatures to paint during the challenge itself. Haha! Not me though, I'm painting like a nutter trying to get projects finished before the challenge starts.

The sharper ones amongst our readership will have spotted the flaw in my plan. Most likely I am steering myself directly into a large tree with "painting fatigue" carved at forehead height. What the hell though, it gets stuff done and seeing as I need these new toys for our big holiday bash I've not got many options.

My dubious project management methodologies aside, here's what's on the workbench at the moment... the almost very last, possibly even penultimate miniatures for my 40K Catachan army.

The only thing I've got left I think is a pair of old skool Imperial Sentry Guns plus a couple of crew. Having said that I'm sure fleaBay's siren song will call me once again. :-)

Paint(ed) Table Saturday - 40K Catachan Armour

Not so much Paint Table Saturday as PAINTED Table Saturday and that can't be a bad thing right?
A finished project is a thing of beauty no matter how small and these two powerhouses of the jungle were finished up this morning.

Hellhound Chimera APC variant and Leman Russ Demolisher variant

I posted about these a little while back, when I talked about what needed to happen before the painting could start. I'm pleased to say the prep work was well worth it and I'm more than happy with the finished items.

A dark green base coat has been overlaid with several lighter coats and then a sponged black/gray camo pattern applied over the top. Despite Evan's cajoling I decided to stick with a two-colour camo as I don't really like three-colour on 40K vehicles.

Exfoliatus is a Leman Russ Demolisher, just the ticket for clearing a path through the jungle and taking on weapon pits, strong points and other nastiness including enemy armour. She was the worse off of the two when she arrived and required serious surgery in the war forges before being fit for battle once more...

Ole Smokey is a Hellhound Chimera APC variant, just the ticket for flushing infantry and creepy-crawlies out of the undergrowth. Or perhaps better still, simply BBQing the whole lot at once and being done with it once and for all!

Both still need another coat or two of Dullcote to hide the last of the decal shine but as I've run out of the damn stuff yet again that will have to wait.

Next up, three Sentinels and an odd Ogryn Bonehead and I'm all done for 2500 points, just in time to start the Painting Challenge once again.
