Online Registration Information

Students register for courses through Self-Service. Read more about how courses are numbered here.

  1. Meet with a faculty mentor (Metier) and academic advisor (Critical Studies) to plan your coursework to fulfill specific requirements and minimum number of units that will place you on the right track for graduation.
  2. Clear any holds placed on your account
  3. Email the instructor for permission to join a course if it requires the instructor’s approval or has reached maximum capacity. Any program or school specific registration restrictions, prerequisites, or year-level restrictions, can only be overridden by your instructor.
  4. Modify course schedule until add/drop deadline. Make sure to stay enrolled in any preloaded courses as they are required by a school.

Holds

Holds placed on accounts prevent students from registering for courses. They can be placed on student accounts for various reasons and must be removed by the office that placed them. Students can check if a hold is on their account by logging into Self-Service and looking under the notifications box and in the pop-up box at the upper-right corner of the page.

To resolve holds, identify the office that placed the hold and contact that office to resolve the issue. Do this before the registration period begins to ensure timely course registration

Registration Timeline

Fall semester registration starts in May for continuing students and in August for new students. Winter/Spring semester registration starts in December for all students.

A two-week winter session is part of the spring semester and is required for all students according to Institute policy. Students who do not enroll in winter session courses may impact their Financial Aid and the mandatory federal reporting the office submits.

Course Add/Drop

Students can add or drop courses from Self-Service through the end of the second Friday after the semester starts. During this period, dropped courses will not appear on your transcript. Students must be enrolled in a full-time* courseload to meet the 8-semester residency requirement and financial aid eligibility.

Course Withdrawal

After the add/drop period ends, students may withdraw from a course without academic penalty. The course reminds of the student’s academic record with a “W” grade.

*Full-time status is determined by the number of units enrolled, which varies based on academic level. While both undergraduate and graduate students can generally enroll in up to 20 units each semester, MA students are limited to a specific number of units as specified below.

Number of Units to Reach Full-Time Status

BFA Students

12 units (15 units/semester to meet unit requirements in four years)

MA Students

1st Year: 12 units | 2nd Year: 6 units

MFA Students

12 units (School of Art, Dance, and Music)

9 units (School of Critical Studies, Film/Video, and Theater)

DMA Students

10 units
