Interview: The Afro Nick

This past week I was able to connect with the frontman of a new solo indie rock project, The Afro Nick, to discuss his electric new single and video for “Get There Before Noon.” Nick, who’s signature, ‘wild and expressive hair,’ matches his unique, carefree sound, is releasing the feel-good triumphant anthem this Friday the 22nd. This track is a hypnotic melody with psychedelic, powerful guitar riffs and Nick’s rich and soulful vocals. In this interview, I asked Nick about his process for writing new material, and the collaborations put forth on his new music.

What inspired the rearranged and re-recorded version of “Get There Before Noon,” and how did working in your LA home studio influence the final sound?

After a late and long hangout at my apartment in NYC I woke up with a hangover but I had to go record for another artist and I had to get there before noon. I grabbed the acoustic guitar and recorded a voice memo while drinking my coffee. That was the channel of inspiration. But bringing something like this into a final vibration that translates the feeling I had, is always a big challenge. That’s why I had to evolve to a music producer, I had to micromanage every small detail. It’s not just chords and words for me. Working on my own time and space and adapting the technology of Dolby Atmos was the key.

With themes of freedom and authenticity being central to your music, how does “Get There Before Noon” fit into the broader narrative of The Afro Nick’s artistic identity?

Living in the moment, Get There Before Noon is the first of my new era releases. Knowing more than yesterday and focusing on the inner vibration that unites all of us, it is the first note to what’s coming next. The celebration of life.

Collaborating with George Athanas and Leo Genovese adds a unique dynamic to your music. As does your time with Stray Blue and your early influences from Crete. How did these contributions shape the creative process and sound of this track?

I feel so lucky to have the greatest recording for me. Their passion for music and life is indescribable. I am also so grateful for the trip from the desert to the sea. Stray Blue really shaped my heart.
