My Neighbor's Garden: A Mystery

Ruth Schmuff has unveiled her Summer 2023 mystery class--"My Neighbor's Garden."  This is an abstract landscape by Brooke Connor with birds, a tree, buildings and a rolling dreamscape.

There will be three lessons over the summer for this piece.  As usual, I'll post Ruth's updates here as she and her students work on this fun design.

The first update shows beaded vines and a green swirl area with pattern.  I think some of the purple background has been stitched, too.

Lots of outlining and a fun open background stitch are created in lesson two but the star is the bubble tree.

Lesson three has stitched birds and metal flowers for a special embellishment.

Here are two finished examples of this outrageous and fun design-both framed but one in such a way as it serves as a key or leash holder.

Two Interviews (Landscapes and Tools)

By coincidence I ran across two interviews that are of interest to stitchers. The first has Trish Burr (known for her realistic needle painting birds and flowers) talking to Margaret Vant Erve, a Canadian embroiderer known for her painted and stitched landscapes.  There are plenty of photos of Margaret's work to enjoy which is a great treat.

Here's the direct link to Margaret's website where you can see even more examples of her work and classes she teaches.  Pour yourself a cup of your favorite beverage and join me in pondering why embroidery isn't considered art.

The second interview is Mary Corbet talking to Lamora Haidar of Access Commodities about the needle tins that Access sells to shops.  This interview touches on how needlework tools come to market and why stitchers are so attracted to them.  Fascinating!

If Lamora's brief talk on how her company comes up with ideas for stitchers intrigues you, then a visit to the Access Commodities website is something you will want to do.  Click on "Blog" and check out the book review of Dress of the Court of Henry VIII, look at "Products" if you need wool felt from Scotland for a needle book or rice paste glue or Micron pens or much, much more.

SharonG Canvases from Ponza, Italy

.
As you probably know, the latest TNNA trade show is this weekend. Needlepoint designers, thread manufacturers and many more folks who feed our addiction get together for a wholesale show for our shops. Through the courtesy of SharonG, I have four of her newest Italian landscapes to show you above. These designs came from photographs taken from Denise W. who visits Italy often and took these photographs in Ponza. Can't you just hear the sea gulls and smell the salty sea air? Lovely!
