Interesting Tidbit
My mother mentioned to me the other night that CNN's Anderson Cooper's mother is Gloria Vanderbilt. If I knew that, I had forgotten, interesting tidbit.
I had a poster that needed framing and I noticed that Michael's craft store had a 60% off sale on framing, so I decided to get it done. I chose to have it laminated in a canvas finish as opposed to a matte finish and picked what I think is the perfect frame for it. It will be ready for pickup in 2 to 3 weeks, all I'll have to do is hang it up. Even at 60% off, a nice framing job costs over $100. If I like the finished product, I'll post a photo up. They had no samples of what a 'canvas' finish is like, so there's a bit of suspense involved!

Canned Peaches
My friend S brought me some canned peaches, she helps her sister make batches of these at this time of year. They also do wonderful canned beets and this year they made batches of raspberry jam. The beauty of doing this yourself is that you can control the amount of sugar, or whatever preservatives are required. You also have to enjoy doing this, because it takes a lot of time and you need helpers. I'm the lucky and appreciative consumer.

Gathering Supplies
I spent yesterday gathering supplies for L, as M and K drove up to see her at the university today. I was trying to find her new pencil cases, but the back to school season is over and none of the good ones are left. Oh well. OK, she asked for some shot glasses and what else is a good mom to do but get some for her? A friend stopped by to drop off some supplies for his daughter who is at the same university. We're arranging to car pool with them for Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend, to bring the girls home. L had reserved a VIA rail train ticket, hopefully she can cancel it.
Heard at the mall recently, a conversation between two women in a clothing store:

Tomato tip. Even a few cherry tomato plants can produce an overabundance of tomatoes. Here's a simple way to prepare them as one of the vegetables at a meal: Put a dollop of olive oil in a baking dish, add cherry tomatoes to cover the dish bottom, and roll them around to coat with the oil. Sprinkle with salt, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 325 F.

The Winnings
It was a gorgeous day for walking yesterday, very mild out with a pleasant breeze. I met a friend of a friend by chance and we decided to walk together and had a nice chat. Her 35 year job came to an end, so she's now retired in her fifties. If she found the right job, preferably part-time, she would go back to work. But she was telling me about some of the horrible interviews she's been to and the strange, sometimes personal questions she gets asked. Fortunately, she has the option of staying home.
After that, I went over to my mom's and we went for another shorter walk. I read that exercise strengthens the heart, a weak one or otherwise. She asked me to buy her a $5 lottery ticket at the convenience store. I told her to be sure to sign it, I pulled out a pen and she told me to write my name on it and we'll split the winnings equally. Wouldn't that be great? (-:

The Cardiologist
Took my mom to see the cardiologist yesterday. He mostly read from the family doctor's report and didn't seem overly concerned about her health. He didn't seem too interested in the Florida doctor's information. She was the one who diagnosed my mom's congestive heart failure condition. To be on the safe side, he's ordered a stress test, an echocardiogram, and a holter test. Then we'll have a follow-up with the cardiologist. For the moment, he seems to think it was a combination of the Florida heat and salty food that caused her problems. I asked if she does have congestive heart failure and I think he said she does, but it's not the kind where the heart is going to stop pumping, more the kind aggravated by the heat and salty food??? Anyway, he ordered all the right tests, I think, so we will go from there. My mom seems to be doing fine at the moment and is her old self. I'll ask him again if she has congestive heart failure at the follow-up, hopefully I'll get some clarification. We were busy sorting out all the prescription medicines.

Seasonal Photo
I took this photo on the weekend. Everyone was still wearing summer shoes and Main Street was full of pedestrians and their dogs. It's usually sweaters in the mornings though. There is a bit of a chill in the mornings and it makes you think it's almost time to turn the heat on.
The good news is that the Insurance Company called yesterday to say that M's claim cheques are on the way! We were feeling discouraged about the process on the weekend. They did turn down a meal claim and a bunch of taxi fares because we had no receipts, but we thought we'd try to submit them anyway. Receipts are very important when it comes to insurance claims!

Pork Spare Ribs
On the weekend, I baked some pork spare ribs and they were successful(tender). Here is (roughly)how I did it:
3 - 3.5 lbs pork spare ribs
honey garlic barbecue sauce for slathering
a splash of dark soy sauce
a splash of teriyaki sauce
Pre-heat oven 350 F
Line baking tray with foil, then lay a sheet of parchment paper on top of that.
Cut ribs into 4 inch portions and place on top of parchment paper in one layer. Rub all the ingredients onto the meat. Bake 30 minutes, then cover the meat loosely with aluminum foil. Lower the heat to 300F and bake 30 minutes longer at 300F.

Tomato Sauce and Pizza Margherita
Smitten Kitchen recently posted a fresh tomato sauce recipe. I was inspired by its delicious simplicity. Of course, being a lazy sort, I tried her recipe with a can of plum tomatoes and it was good enough for us. She had an even simpler option for playing around as 'little as possible'. And here is my take on it:
1 28oz can of diced tomatoes
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
a splash of olive oil
I simmered all the ingredients for about 30 minutes and used a potato masher to break the tomatoes up as they cooked (as recommended by Smitten). I added 1/2 cup of water at half time as it seemed to need it.
I had some pre-made thin pizza crust from the grocery store. So I smothered it with some of my sauce, added thin slices of low-fat havarti cheese (about 1/2 cup), sprinkled some dried basil on top and baked for at 425F for about 5 minutes. I have a hot oven, some people may need to bake at 450F. That would be Pizza Margherita, my favourite!

IEP's and IPRC's
M and I met recently with Special Education at K's school. The nice lady explained a bit about the IEP process to us. Every kid identified with a learning disability has an Individual Education Plan drawn up for him and it's reviewed in an IPRC process annually. The IEP documents the child's strengths and weaknesses and recommends teaching strategies to the teachers. So K will have his IEP in October. He also has a personal advocate from Special Education throughout high school.
It sounds like 10 percent of the kids at the school are identified with a learning disability. (I'm sure there is a good percentage that have not been identified, for whatever reason). Interestingly, gifted kids fall under the Special Education category.
M is frustrated with his medical insurance claim since our Greece/Turkey holiday this summer. It has been dragging on as insurance claims can often do. A lady from the insurance called yesterday, while he was out and I'm afraid I didn't plead his case very well. They are so good at putting people off and I can't think on my feet. We have a legitimate claim to a reputable company. It shouldn't be such a painful process of following up. A friend of mine said she gave up on a $200 claim a few years ago because they kept asking for various kinds of documentation. Well, we have a solid case and have now surely faxed everything they could possibly want. We waited 5 days for them to acknowledge receipt of the last fax and then they said it would take yet another 10 days to process.
Anyway, I was out for a walk with my friend 'S' yesterday evening and we encountered our local councillor doing his canvassing for the upcoming elections. I told him I saw him waving at the corner the other morning and he asked if he could put one of his signs on my lawn. I agreed.

A New Mattress
Well, L received a brand new mattress at university, just a couple of days after she filled out the request. The original was badly soiled when she moved in. Yay, it's a good feeling. She said the lady that came in to do the switch was really grossed out by the old one, although it was partially covered in plastic. L told her she could remove the plastic and she said, 'I don't think so'.
She told me that one of her friend's moms has already been to the university 4 times to see her only daughter, she misses her so much! It hasn't even been 2 weeks since they left home. She has fallen in love with Booster Juice and tells me there is a franchise near us, so I'll have to get K to try it. They're not cheap but they are nutritious and according to her, delicious.
L is busy checking out current volunteer opportunities, and job opportunities for next summer. She says the classes are ok, just lots of homework. I took K for his annual physical and the pediatrician said to tell her that lots of homework gives you focus. She wasn't impressed with that advice, but he's full of work ethic!
Interestingly, the doctor advised me to start giving L and K Vitamin D supplements (1000 units). It applies to adults too. They are new Health Canada guidelines.
My mom got an appointment to see the cardiologist for early next week, so that's a relief. She's up and about, and refuses to slow down. She had a few episodes of shortness of breath while she was away in the U.S. The doctor there diagnosed her congestive heart failure condition. Both my mom and our family doctor are not convinced, so the cardiologist should know for sure. Maybe they're both in denial.
On an amusing note, we are having upcoming municipal elections. The incumbent councillor in our area was out canvassing early this morning. He brought his signs and posted them on a busy street corner. Then he held one and waved to us as we went by. I thought that was a nice touch, I think I'll vote for him again.

OVER 60 POINTS: Others see you as someone they should "handle with care." You're seen as vain, self-centered, and extremely dominant. Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.
51 TO 60 POINTS: Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality, a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once, someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.
41 TO 50 POINTS: Others see you as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting, someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to let it go to their head. They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding, someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.
31 TO 40 POINTS: Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest. Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expects the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you, realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.
21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy. They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder. It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.
UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions and who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist. Some people think you're boring. Only those who know you well, know that you aren't.

Isn't this the cutest party candle? I think I'll start using these more.
In other news, I learned that Walmart is now offering a new credit card that offers actual cash back instead of reward points. Not a bad idea, who can't use real cash? What I can't use is yet another credit card.
My mom who lives nearby has recently been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She wasn't actually sick beyond high blood pressure and diabetes for years and took a whole bunch of various medicines. We're all in shock and it's something we're going to have to deal with now. Life is totally unpredictable. Let's hope we can see a cardiologist really soon. Specialist appointments are hard to come by in a hurry. There, I've said it. She's in her early 70's.

A little bit of Gossip
My friend was telling me that a friend of hers made the decision to have a child although she was single and unattached. She considered using a surrogate father, but in the end, decided to go with someone she had actually met. So, she met this guy on a plane and he agreed to father her child. Except, she ended up having twins! Apparently they run in her family. The kids are now 10 years old. One of them has developed a disorder where he can't stand to be touched. I'm wondering if the father would be able to shed any light on this condition, but they're not in contact with each other.

The First Care Package
Well, L told us that her friend's sister will be driving to the university today for a visit and she kindly offered to deliver anything L needed from home. So we got a list yesterday afternoon and started gathering stuff. L said that at the moment, she would prefer anything that you can quickly microwave, such as the new line of Campbell's Soup at Hand cups. I also got her another small box of cereal and a box of instant oatmeal. She has a meal plan in residence and said the food's good, except that you have to arrive on time for meals else you'll miss them. She also asked for a couple of extra sweaters, her old, trustworthy tennis shoes and some eyeliner.
I must say that I get the impression these teenagers are obsessed with alcohol. And I think the reason is that there is a drinking age. You know, anything that's prohibited becomes somehow more exciting and 'must have'. Isn't that human nature?

The Right Gift
My friend's birthday is coming up, so we're going for a walk this morning, then M and K will join us for lunch. I got her a gas card as a gift because she does a lot of driving and is a very practical person, like myself. Over the years, I've tried giving her other gifts, but I think this one works. One year, I gave her a pot of silk flowers but I could tell she thought they took up a lot of space. Another year I gave her a set of Lagostina brand cutlery which she graciously accepted, then I realized she'd never be able to use that much cutlery, being a single woman who doesn't entertain a lot.
Yesterday I had to make a trip to the gas station to put air in my car tires. I hate doing that, but it gets easier each time. This time, I made sure to check all 4 tires instead of having to go back each time one goes low. The trick is reading the air pressure gauge correctly and of course, checking the car manual to verify the correct tire pressure. You also have to be careful not to over-inflate your tire as it could explode as a worst case.
L's sprained ankle sounds as if it has improved a lot, almost overnight. We just have to find a convenient time to Skype these days. She's busy when we're available and vice versa. The other night she was off to some kind of carnival (Frosh week), walking and limping.
A friend was telling me she recently tried this Groupon website. This is how it works. So they feature a deal each day, and if enough people want it, they can give you an amazing group rate on the product. I signed up for daily alerts. Oh, and Groupon is based on your city, it seems to be available in a lot of US cities.

A Nice Lunch
Had a nice lunch on Main Street with a friend yesterday. It was overcast and the streets were not very crowded. We started with a delicious, brandied sweet potato soup. My friend had a mushroom and cheese pizza and I had a roasted vegetable and goat cheese pizza. We decided to pass on the rich desserts and had a couple of comforting, hot lattes.
Poor L sprained her ankle during a tennis game at the university and is now on crutches, hopefully just for a few days. She's never done that before.
K is enjoying his first few days of school. He was happy to see some of his old friends in his new classes. He's in co-ed gym this semester and reports it as being a rigorous workout. The teacher sounds very adventurous.

Manual Lawnmower
I was out walking the other evening and noticed a lady mowing the lawn with a manual lawnmower. I got talking to her and she told me to be sure to get the kind with 4 wheels as she thinks they work quite well. She made the point that it's not only good exercise, it's good for the environment. How right she is. We also realized that a lot of women aren't comfortable with machines and gas-powered mowers. I would be one of them. So maybe one day I will get one of these manual ones.

The Move into University
So we left the house at about 6.40 am the morning of the move and arrived in less than 2 hours, no traffic. We stopped at a McDonald's for a quick breakfast. The unloading procedure was very organized, there were a lot of kids moving in that day. L went to check in and get all her documents while some students unloaded our 29 small boxes into trolleys and up the elevator to her suite. (Still don't know how M got everything packed into our van). The movers said they liked our small boxes that fit so well in their carts (I had picked them out of our supermarket bin). K and I walked up the stairs with all the valuables while M parked the van.
By the time we got up to the suite, all her boxes were outside so we started moving stuff in and unpacking. We met one of L's roommates inside and she mentioned that one of the other roommates is her friend. She had moved in the day before because she thought she had a sports tournament on the day of the move, but it got cancelled. I could tell she's organized by the way all her stuff was already laid out. I heard she had even re-arranged all the furniture in her room. She had a very tasteful, tall set of salt and pepper shakers, so I just put L's Walmart brand salt and pepper shakers in her pantry (lol). The girl had her own TV in the living room, her own set of pots and pans, a toaster oven and a section of the fridge was stocked with yogurt, juice, etc. She had her own loaf of bread in the freezer. L and M came into the suite a short while later.
The kitchenette has lots of storage in a way that each of the 4 girls can have shelves of their own for pots, dishes, etc. There is even a pantry with 4 separate sets of shelves.
L's roommate from her old school arrived with her mom and sister. Then the 4th girl's family came in. I don't remember meeting this 4th girl. She had a younger 16 yr old brother. I noticed the mom wiping the front door handles with a scrunched up face (like eww!). K said he saw her wiping down the kitchen cupboards, even the fronts of the doors. I liked that. I think when M and L filled out the residence survey, they must have asked for neat, organized people! One of the moms asked if we had a vacuum, so I told her I noticed a sign in the garbage room that you could borrow cleaning items from the Front Desk, so she was able to get a vacuum there, which she lent to M afterward.
The girl who had arrived the day before was bored and kept asking if anyone needed any help, but I didn't feel right putting her to work. K took all the boxes for recycling down to the first floor room.
K noticed a lot of first year boys moving XBOX 360's to their rooms and liked that. I had to remind him that serious study would have to start soon. He had forgotten. M saw others with speaker sound systems.
L was excited though tired. I think she's going to love the whole experience once she settles in. Hopefully she can get enough 'down' time. M heard on the news that Frosh week can be more stressful than the regular school week. The Soph kept coming into the suite announcing times for an evening floor meeting. He was probably wondering why we were still there.
All the parents came for less than an hour basically dropping the girls off. We stayed for 4 hours and completely unpacked. It took an extra hour figuring out how to cover L's unfortunately soiled mattress. It was a massive dried stain on the underside. We wrapped that section with clear plastic garbage bags, taped with packing tape. Then we put the provided flimsy mattress cover on top. Then we laid our memory foam which came with a covering layer and its own mattress pad. Then we put another mattress pad I had bought before I knew the memory foam had its own pad. Then we put the fitted sheet on top. Hopefully she can get a new one after she files a problem report.
So we finished around 2pm, caught our breath then left around 2.30pm. We saw L walking outside with her new roommates as we turned the corner. We stopped at McDonald's near the highway for a quick meal then were back home in about 2 hours, a bit past 5pm. Traffic wasn't too bad.
Close to midnight, we Skyped a bit with L who was exhausted from the busy day. Skype's wonderful. Her roommates had helped her mount some photos and posters (gifts from friends) on the wall and it looked lovely.
I was exhausted that night, though. The next day was a bit better. It was just good to slow down for awhile and return to normal breathing after weeks of packing and then unpacking.

98 years old and no enemies - human interest story
I'll be taking several days off from my daily posts while we get L settled into university and get K started back at school.
Meanwhile, I got this in an email:
Toward the end of Sunday service, the Minister asked,
'How many of you have forgiven your enemies?'
80% held up their hands.
The Minister then repeated his question.
All responded this time, except one small elderly lady.
'Mrs. Neely, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?'
'I don't have any.' She replied, smiling sweetly.
'Mrs. Neely, that is very unusual. How old are you?'
'Ninety-eight,' she replied.
The congregation stood up and clapped their hands.
'Oh, Mrs. Neely, would you please come down in front & tell us all how a person can live ninety-eight years & not have an enemy in the world?'
The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the congregation, and said,
'I outlived the bitches…'

Keep your eye on the prize
I was at the gym recently and mentioned to a few ladies that my daughter's heading off to university very soon. One of the ladies said her daughter attended the same university and loved it. She's a teacher now, married and living in the area. This daughter came home a lot because her boyfriend (now husband) lived in town. The other lady said to me 'That's great!'. I was puzzled, but she said 'because it's exciting for them!'. She said the time goes by so fast and when they come home, you realize how messy they are.
My sister sent photos of her son's shared dorm room. She thinks they are living a charmed life. I noticed a big screen TV and they had bought a futon-type couch. They have a fridge, microwave and an Xbox 360! And the residence food is cheap. Hopefully they will survive the academic side. I keep telling L to 'keep her eye on the prize' and not to get too distracted.
K is getting ready for the start of his Grade 10 year. He requested co-ed gym this year. His solution to the house seeming empty when L is away, is to fill it up with new toys for himself. Yes, right. He was at an old friend's place for a pool party yesterday. It was touching to notice that the boy's voice had changed! We had seen him in the spring and he had grown taller, but now he's becoming a young man. All this stuff is bittersweet these days, everyone's growing up too fast. Oh, it was another saline (salt water) pool. K says you just have to remember not to open your eyes when you dunk your head in the water.
