About This Map

This map tracks 4,800 US data center facilities: estimated power capacity, pipeline status, climate risk, and water stress, compiled from public sources and refreshed monthly.
What This Map Shows
The map offers four view modes, each showing a different dimension of the dataset.
Capacity
Estimated power capacity in megawatts for each facility. Bubble size reflects relative capacity.
Pipeline
Development status of each facility: operational, under construction, planned, or proposed.
Climate Risk
Composite climate risk scores derived from FEMA's National Risk Index, covering 18 natural hazard types at the county level. Highlights facilities in areas exposed to hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and other hazards.
Water Stress
Basin-level water stress estimates based on WRI Aqueduct methodology, showing the ratio of water demand to available supply at each facility's location.
Data Sources & Methodology
Facility locations, operators, and capacity are compiled from public sources (company announcements, government filings, utility records, and news reports), then geocoded and joined to environmental and energy data from FEMA's National Risk Index, WRI Aqueduct, the EIA, and EPA eGRID. Capacity is published for only about a third of facilities, so aggregate megawatt totals represent known capacity only. The methodology page covers how facilities are identified, verified, and scored, along with the known limitations.
Who Runs This
dcmap.us is a personal project built and maintained independently by Rahil Banthia. It grew out of curiosity about where the data center buildout is actually heading, and sits alongside other projects at unsol.dev. It is not affiliated with any employer or organization.
